Live not the life that others think you should.....
Live instead the life that you yourself would!
Damian Murphy Nov 2015
Is it wrong to enjoy being alone,
Is it socially unacceptable,
To want sometimes just to be on my own,
Not need to be surrounded by people?
It's not that I'm anti-social as such,
I'm quite at ease with my own company.
I do not crave company very much
As being alone does not bother me.
I worry for those who fear solitude,
Who feel that alone they would not survive;
For those who seem to have the attitude
That they need others in order to thrive.
It is those when alone who are at ease
Any company will far better please.

Even the best laid plans go wrong,
The unexpected comes along.
Before you know it, suddenly,
You are in new territory.

When that happens what do you do?
Do you give up or see it through?
'Tis a decision you must make...
To give up or a risk to take.

You may decide to take a chance,
To fly by the seat of your pants,
You might stick with it, come what may,
Just let the chips fall where they may.

Or choose to play it safe you may,
Retreat to fight another day,
Decide the risk is just too great
With too much left to chance, to fate.

Perhaps it is a hunch, your gut,
The weighing up of ifs and buts
That helps you reach a decision
That which for you is the right one.

You and you alone have to choose
And whether you win or you lose,
Your reasoning to you is known,
The decision but yours to own.

Who in their right mind would choose to be a Mother?
For it is indeed a calling quite unlike any other
From the minute their children draw their first breath
Mothers are there for them right up until their death

They see their children as a gift from the man above
Feed them and nourish them, shower them with love
Watch over them, protect them, give them security
Let them know their Mothers love them, unconditionally

Mothers ensure their children have everything they need
Do absolutely everything they can to help them succeed
Praise, scold, and encourage them as they begin to grow
teach them all of the important things they need to know.

A Mother is on duty every single hour of every day
working the maximum of hours for little or no pay
gets very little thanks, shown precious little gratitude
in fact from kids a Mother gets mostly bad attitude!

Not one minutes break from the stress and the worry
Caused by kids who seem determined to grow up in a hurry
Who tend to question everything their Mother might say
Often accusing their Mothers of getting in their way.

Even when they cannot seem to do right for doing wrong
A Mothers love for her children remains forever strong
Mothers never give up no, no Mother will ever rest
All they want is for their children to be their very best.

Mothers guide us through childhood and our teenage years
There for us through good and bad times, laughter and tears
Often taken for granted, we don’t appreciate them as we should,
only realising how much they do for us when we reach adulthood

But a Mothers job is not done when her children are all grown
Even after they are married, have homes and children of their own
Mothers still worry and stress because they genuinely care
Ensuring their children know their Mother will always be there.

So if you love your Mother do not be afraid to say
You should tell her more often but especially on Mothers Day
While it is lovely to give flowers and gifts and such
They would mean so much more with a personal touch

For all she has done for you she deserves a big “Thank You”
It would mean so much to her to hear you say “I LOVE YOU”
though you may think she already knows it,  Say it anyway
because those three little words would make any Mothers day.

A much loved member of the family
Loved by everyone in their own way
Loving each in return unconditionally,
In their own unique way.

Always a warm welcome for everyone
Bringing a smile to every ones face
Providing so much laughter and fun
Winning in all hearts a special place.

So full of love and affection always
Giving us many hours of pleasure
Characters with their own little ways
So many of us come to treasure.

Offering true friendship and loyalty
Security and companionship too
Capable of showing true empathy,
Whatever we might be going through.

Listening intently to all we say,
A non-judgemental confidant
Beside us as we work rest or play
Happy to do whatever we want.

Asking very little in return from us
On whom they totally depend
Only that we not betray their trust;
That man would be a dogs best friend.

Beautiful, breath taking views
Of vast volcanoes and bright blue seas
Scorching sun and high temperatures
Palm trees swaying in a soft breeze.
Through landscapes layered with black lava
White washed walls wind their way
Around gardens full of fantastic flora
Where lizards and geckos love to play.
Ships sail by beyond the breakers,
Planes pass over as they come in to land,
Promenades packed with holidaymakers
By beaches of beautiful golden sand.
Sun loungers and swimming pools
Hours of rest and relaxation
Siestas while the hot sun cools
Poolside bars for cool libations.
Spectacular sunsets in surrounding skies
Each day ending in such serene splendour
Reds pinks, blues, greys and turquoise;
Colours any artist would be challenged to render.
Pubs clubs and restaurants of such variety
activities that appeal to everyone
Local residents renowned for their hospitality
Make Matagorda a paradise second to none.

Every once in a while
Every one of us should
Take time out to give thanks for
All in our lives that is good,
To truly appreciate
Just how well off we all are;
How really we have it great,
Could be much worse off by far!

I remember once I farted, in a packed lift,
My two cheeks really parted, if you get my drift
I almost had a heart attack, the sound was so clear,
It was indeed a mighty crack, that everyone could hear.

Now everyone turned red, but I was really blessed
as nothing more was said, I presumed no one had guessed.
Some looked at their feet, others at the wall
But no pair of eyes did meet, no one looked at me at all.

But no one could deny there was an awful hum
And I had to wonder why I was cursed with such a ***.
Dear God, it was bad, worse than ever before
Was it the curry I had? I will not eat it any more.

On no! this can’t be happening, I felt my two cheeks part
This one much more sickening, what some would call a “shart”
Though I tried to look innocent, as detached as I could be
I knew what those looks meant and they were directed at me

We all held our breath, no one dared to breathe
We all faced certain death if the smell did not recede
We all wanted the top floor which was thirty stories high.
Would someone open the door or would we all be left to die

Thank God for ventilation, it really saved the day
For in case of flatulation it will take the smell away
Well I was so relieved, it was quite a close call
And I would not have believed what happened next at all

The lift it just stopped dead, a million to one chance
I thought I’d lose my head but instead I filled my pants.
I learned one thing that day, well at least it keeps me happy
I won’t get in a lift, No Way! without first putting on a *****.

Mistakes to success are
As steps to the ladder;
Both help us to ascend,
To reach  goals in the end.
Damian Murphy Oct 2015
There are those who do possess
All that they might need and more
Who despite that nonetheless
Least appreciate their lot.
There are those who have much less
But appreciate much more
What little they do possess
And make the most of their lot.
Perhaps in life happiness
Depends not on having more,
But on focusing far less
On those things we have not got.
Damian Murphy Feb 2016
From the moment of our birth
There is no one else on earth
Who loves us as Mothers do;
So steadfast, loyal and true!

So why wait 'til Mothers Day
To make such a grand display
Of how we love them so much
With flowers, cards, gifts and such?

Let them know the whole year through
Just how much they mean to you.
Show your love in some small way
Other than on Mothers Day!
Damian Murphy Jul 2016
If I had given up along the way
No way would I be where I am today.
Though reaching our goals can at times be tough,
To get where we want...we must want it enough.

From others one may seek advice
In moments of doubt,
Though oft' it is ones inner voice
That one should hear out.

Perchance we only seek advice
When we know within
The answer is the hardest choice;
Not to our liking?
Damian Murphy Oct 2016
I love you more than words can e'er express,
More than possibly you could ever know.
For with you I have found true happiness
And the meaning of true love I now know.
I could have had no way of foreseeing
That I could love someone as you I do;
With every fibre of my being,
Certain the only one for me is you.
That we should never part each day I pray,
That you should be part of my life always,
For I love you more with each passing day,
Know I shall love you for all of my days.
I feel we were meant to be together,
That you and I are soulmates forever.

My wife woke up the other morning
and positively glowered at me
I knew that look was some kind of warning
But wondered what on earth it could be?

It was quite obvious she was not happy
Though I had absolutely no idea why
I tried to talk to her but she was so snappy
Looked at me like she wished I would die.

I thought it might be about my snoring
Which I knew was very bad of late
though that normally had her shouting and roaring
and not in this silent but deadly state

Was it my restless legs syndrome again?
had my kicking kept her up all night?
Or had I hogged all the duvet yet again?
I knew something was not quite right

It was like waiting for a bomb to explode
the silence was truly agonising
my self confidence began to erode
had I done something without realising?

I knew I was definitely in mortal danger
That I needed to tread very carefully
She looked at me like I was some kind of stranger
Actually, more like I was her worst enemy!

I had no option but to push a bit harder
Thoughts of personal safety I left behind
I had to find out what was wrong with her
Before I went completely out of my mind

And then like a veritable tsunami
The whole truth it just flooded out
I knew then why she saw me as the enemy,
Understood what the strop was about!

She accused me of having an affair
With none other than her best friend
She was convinced that I just did not care,
Thought our marriage had come to an end

She did not believe I could be so cold
That I would throw away all that we had
She was convinced and would not be told
It nearly killed me to see her hurting so bad

I tried to convince her that I loved her
That nothing was going on honestly
That I could never have an affair for,
I knew she was the only woman for me

It was hard to convince her it was not true
But she realised in the end it seems
That having an affair is not something I’d do
The whole affair only happened in her dreams!

The whole thing was an absolute nightmare
It was incredibly frightening
One thing we learned from the whole affair
Is that dreams can be a funny thing!

Like alarm bells sounding a warning,
We both saw it as a wake up call
Now we have a reality check every morning
Before doing anything else at all!

Me? I write because I must.
Writing to me is a need
As to life the need to breathe.

For what you say or what you do;
How you make them feel however
They will never forget, ever
Damian Murphy Apr 2017
Should you feel like just giving up,
Or feel that you have had enough,
Remember you are not alone,
We all have troubles of our own.
Though you may think life is not fair
Who goes through life without a care?
We all have our own cross to bear;
Those without are extremely rare.
It is vital we keep going
For we have no way of knowing
What for us tomorrow might bring
If we do our best, keep trying.
Perhaps you  may look back one day
And proudly be able to say,
Though life was hard, extremely tough,
I'm so glad I did not give up.

Should put their time to better use!

It is very hard to excuse!

It is ok to look up to others who
You admire for one reason or another.
But never let anyone look down on you
And never ever look down on another.

Never let anyone else make you feel small
And never ever belittle anyone.
You would not like to be looked down on at all,
So why then would you look down on anyone?

Which I made come true...

Can the coldest of hearts fashion...
Frozen, impenetrable,
Of love no longer capable.

Never should children have to know
How much to their parents they owe.
Although when they reach adulthood
Know, without being told, they should.
How parents give to us so much,
How grateful we should be for such.
Whether passed on or living yet,
Ne'er should we our parents forget.

Poetry by its very nature
Its immortality does secure.
For from the seed that one poem sows
Others take root, germinate and grow
To bloom as poetry of all kinds
From many fertile, creative minds.
Thus ensuring the art shall endure;
Shall flourish long in to the future.

Those who can read, though not to choose,
Much more than those who cannot lose;
They are no more intelligent
Than those who want to read but can’t.
Who wants to but can't, one day will;
Though who choose not to, will not still.

One should remember on such days
That dark days shall come to an end
And the light will return always.

Much harder than your own pain to bear
Is the pain of one for whom you care,
Their pain for yourself you would welcome
If it would ease their suffering some.

Watched over by magnificent ancient trees
though perfectly placed to capture the sun
surrounded by walls of multi coloured ivy’s
there lies a paradise second to none.
Bright vivid colours, shades and hues
only add to the general splendour
yellows, pinks, oranges, reds and blues
colours any artist would be challenged to render.
There are lilies, marigolds, roses and petunias
creepers and climbers racing down and up
geraniums, pansies, lavenders and begonias
grass peppered with daisies and buttercups.
All day butterflies, wasps and bumble bees
work tirelessly alongside one another
relentlessly searching for flowers that please
flitting constantly from one to the other.
A wide variety of flowers, plants and shrubs
burst forth from hanging baskets, flower beds and tubs
providing shelter thus becoming teeming hubs
full of worms and snails, insects and grubs.
Birds rear young nesting in trees and bushes
foraging for food amongst the growing throng
blackbirds, finches, pigeons wrens and thrushes
together creating truly melodic birdsong.
A place that transforms long after night fall
when nocturnal creatures have hunting to do
field mice and hedgehogs from the undergrowth crawl
while the odd wary fox occasionally passes through.
Alas for many the garden becomes just another chore
far too busy to see it can offer so much more
never making the most of the opportunity to see
what a wondrous, thriving paradise a garden can be.

but what one is made of perchance?

To win is not to beat all the rest,
Not all about the the public glory.
For some to beat their personal best
Is the sweetest form of victory.

The challenges we all overcome
Will never warrant medal or prize,
The obstacles overcome by some
Others hardly ever recognise.

Success cannot always be measured
By prizes and accolades alone.
Often the victories we treasure
To many others remain unknown.

Others we should never judge surely
It is incredibly dangerous
For us to stand as judge and jury
Says little of them but more of us.

There was a man who wrote poetry,
There were none more prolific than he.
And all that he wished
Was to be published
But alas it was never to be!
Never give up!!

than popular
for all the wrong ones.

I know not what it is of which you speak
When you do speak of the impossible,
For with every passing day I seek
To push myself whenever possible.
Things I thought were impossible before
I subsequently went on to achieve,
And know I am capable of much more
If only in myself I can believe.
How can anybody possibly know
What in the future might be possible?
For with each day we develop and grow
Do we not redefine our potential?
Each new day brings new opportunities,
Offering endless possibilities.
Damian Murphy Feb 2018
One who reasserts power constantly
Shows strong signs of weakness, impotency!
Though they may deny it vigorously,
Perhaps protest a little too loudly?
Definition of Impotence: noun
1.the condition or quality of being impotent; weakness.
2. Obsolete. lack of self-restraint.
Damian Murphy Nov 2016
They say pride comes before a fall
Which I do not believe at all,
For how would we progress unless
We can take pride in our success?
'Tis pride in success I believe
That motivates us to achieve.
So whether they be big or small
Celebrate your achievements all!
Take pride in any job well done
And apologise to no one!
