A SIX-WORDS POEM CHALLENGE
#SIXWORDSBRO
Desire Dec 2018
I grew out my beard.
I grew out my stomach.
My ears ring randomly.
My eyes see things differently.
I speak or say less.  I move in silence.
I sleep in when I want.
I haven't touched razors since my return
nor rifles since the field ops.
I've grown in maturity mentally.
I've grown insensitive verbally.
I've grown to miss the uniform
and pride of belonging in a brotherhood;
I miss my extended family.
I miss the people, not the troubles.
I miss the gym, where others alike
flexed invisible muscles.
My days once had routine,
pattern, structure and rhythm.
Weekends full of workouts, worship, and beer.
Weeks full of work, blood, sweat, and tears.
I've grown in experience.
I've regained freedom as a civilian.
But the transition has been a grueling process.
Yet, I've grown to be grateful nonetheless,
as not everyone gets to go back "home" ...
(remember the fallen) ...
However, if I'm honest, I don't think there's ever
an actual adjustment...

Help me
to obey
You more
and share
Your word
with others.
May what I say mentor to them and reveal Your many wonders.
Give them faith to trust in You as You reveal Your many truths. Transform our hearts to love all others the way love was shown by You... All
have
sinned,
but God
demonstrates
his own
love for
us in this:
while we
were still
sinners,
Christ died
for us.

Married young with lots to learn.
The journey's been both hard and fun.
Spent seasons apart by earthly seas, and
time together, accordingly - in/as one accord
- the ups and downs have pushed us toward,
growth and strength as we move forward;
a blessing its been, we thank you, Lord!
This date has weight. Lets celebrate‼️

You don't love poetry.
You love being depressed.
Your writings are true and have influence,
but they're only depression expressed.

I respect how you feel,
and please continue to write,
but may we realize poetry's purpose
revealed, in its history, is to shine light,
on your entire story -
not just the ones that hurt.

Tell the world of who you are
and how you strive to shake off your dirt.
Highlight what helps bring healing,
because others are also depressed.
No one needs to be reminded of
their damaging stress that they've suppressed.

"Happiness is a choice"
I challenge you to loudly make that expression.
Poetry makes people happy;
Its an art collection of life-lessons.

Poetry is an art.
Its ideas, creativity, and feelings,
social and racial issues unveiled,
Poetry is revealing.
Its also reflection,
of past and present events.
Poetry instills future hope,
painting pictures,
It represents...
Its a praise report for the week.
Its the abstraction of ambiguous things.
Poetry can be figurative,
or an escape from our realities.
Poetry has history.
Poetry serves a purpose.
To single it in one direction
is a disrespectful disservice...
Do you really love poetry?
[Respect it]

Plot twist: You are poetry. Replace "poetry" with your name in the poem above and reread it.
[Respect yourself]
This poem is not intended to degrade depression. Depression is real. Depression exists. Depression is deep. And so this poem challenges all people to see life in a different way or different light, the same way poetry can be seen differently, and with a change in perspective, may one choose happiness. Depression is real, and so is happiness; happiness is a choice. When people move away from all the pain in their lives, and think about moments of joy, they can experience, again, the feeling of being uplifted...

One choice is all it takes...
to make or ruin our lives,
and apart from grace,
it's hard for one's soul to survive
theft, death, or ****,
or other reasons that make it hard to rationalize, or mediate -
many minds destroyed by disturbing disasters that devastate
us,
distorting truth, love, and hate,
sometimes they break our beings;
We can't contemplate these feelings.
Is this our fate?
For some, it unfortunately becomes fatal.
For others, there's a faith that saves,
making a way when we're unable,
to move.
Regardless of one's belief or views,
lets look back at what's being presented before you on the table:

One choice is all it takes...

As the suspect or victim,
we pick our choices and choose how to deal with our given circumstances,
to include the circumstances we didn't choose to be in, or begin with, in the first place.
Even when things happen outside of our control
We control our choices and responses,
as everything unfolds,
and for some choices, come consequence -
the thing we say someone's gotta own
up to, and rightfully so...
So may we have an awareness of ourselves
and arch attention or focus to
making better choices, because
One choice is all it takes...
[be intentional]

"You can't take back what you've already done or been through, but you can choose how to deal with it, and you can make choices for the betterment of the circumstance, of yourself, and of others... choose wisely, and know that we're created for good works..." - Desire R.

When I reach my end-state,
I hope to see the pearly gate
and see them streets of gold
in a place deemed celestial
                   a place of eternal beings
                   in harmony worshipping
                   the King of kings, by his grace,
                   may we get through,
to, or near the throne,
killed off my flesh and bone,
but spared my soul, so
ever thankful, eternally grateful
                  when I see the cloud descend
                  and hear them trumpets play
                  on the Great and Magnificant day
                  off we go to see this heavenly place
but until then, I'll live
in love and loyalty, hum-b-ly,
as I leave behind a harvest
for our children to reap
                 unearned and undeserving
                 forgiveness was freely given to we
                 making it my duty to live
                 a life that honors He
despite my own imperfect way of living
live honestly; despite your theology

You need some gas in the tank
in order to get to the gas station...
Sometimes you have to burn fuel to get more fuel... Just don't burn through it all
before refilling, and don't refill
without using some... You dont want to
burn out empty or blow up and explode...
Dont worry about speed, as its limits vary,
but finding balance over the
bumpy roads of life - the ups and downs -
thats where the best moments are made.
The bumps, holes, and uneven streets
are part of the route to your destination, racetrack, and life journey...
So if all you have
is a little bit of gas, just above the "E,"
its all you need to get from Point A to Point B.
(even flat tires are temporary)
(you dont need a license to live)
(yes, I dragged this)

Jesus…
healed the sick,
helped the hopeless and helpless,
freed the oppressed and possessed,
and forgave, of sinners, their sin.

Jesus…
taught truth; made miracles;
saved souls; scoured sin;
daringly died; defeated death;
radically rose; returned to life.
Alive, he ate, and showed his face;
Five-hundred eyewitnesses - there was
no debate.

Jesus…
ascended to Heaven;
and is approaching again;
This Divine-Manifest, God-become-flesh;
This Ransom-Redeemer, sacrificial Savior;
This Risen-Rescuer; eternally crowned
Creator-King; rightly reigning; readily returning;
This living and loving Lord; caring and compassionate Counselor; justly, Justifier and Judge;

This is… Jesus…

It’s so hard to stay when you’re so far away
& I want to see your face just one more time
Even in a great storm
Cold, snow, rain, fog, or warmth
I’d walk ev-er-y mile to have you in my arms

Even through all the pain
& the screams of yesterday
Bursting bombs, blown up tanks,
war sounds ringing’ in my brain

I still hear all the cries
“don’t you die”… “you’ll be fine…”
“Stay with me” … “you’ll survive…”
“We’re gonna be alright…”

I reopened my eyes, saw bright hospital lights
Life support’s running thin, I no longer qualify
I hear the Corpsman talkin’ when one of ‘em walks in and says “sir, you’ve had a very good fight… it’s time to call it…”

Unable to move, with no strength left to lose
I just let the tears slowly roll down my brui-sed cheek
If it’s my last day and I’m placed in the grave I just want you to know I’ll still find a way, ‘cause, see…

It’s so hard to stay when you’re so far away
& I want to see your face just one more time
Even in a great storm
Cold, snow, rain, fog, or warmth
I’d walk ev-er-y mile to have you in my arms

I said, it’s so hard to stay when you’re so far away
& I want to see your face just one more time
Even in a great storm

I’d walk ev-er-y mile to have you in my arms

In a dream, warnings heed
From the pit, my soul - he keeps
Awake, I pray, and see his face
I shout of joy, and sing him praise.

My sins are spared,
Perversions pardoned,
My ways are not repaid to me
For, from the pit, my soul is kept
My life is lit, and I - redeemed

Chance after chance, and time again
Into the pit, his hand extends
Pulls us up, turns us about
Not graved to perish, but to live devout.

His mercies anew; his truths revealed
Saved from the pit, sown in his fields
His grace - sufficient, where sin spewed its spout.
His love has no end - my soul has no doubt.
For, from the pit, my soul - he keeps.
My life is lit, and I - redeemed.

We must become far more than what the system wants us to be.
We are surpassing standards our peers have failed to reach.
We are achieving goals and making it to places
    our ancestors once dreamed.
We are living the wildest dreams of those before us.
We are going to places not even some of
    our parents have been to or seen.
Who are you becoming?

With the weight of responsibility of trying to secure a future for one's family, with the pressures of progressing and "making it" in life, there are those who are fighting and pushing forward! While people sit back, comfortably, living crowded and messy lives, and living from check to check, there's a people focused on marching ahead... In no way am I replacing faith with "success" but there's a difference in doing what you can and trusting the process from remaining comfortable in circumstances that weren't meant to be permanent in the first place!

In this world of darkness, I was lost and blind,
A sinner saved by grace, a troubled soul to find,
I struggle with my demons, I battle with my sin,
But deep within my heart, a new desire begins.

I want to please the Spirit, honor and glorify,
To care for those around me, as the days go by,
Though I fail daily, I know what I must do: Choose to surrender my life, Lord, in following You.

Oh, God, help me to shine, in this place so dark,
Shine your light, joy, and peace, leave a lasting mark,
In this mixed and messed up world, help me to stand tall,
I just want to make You proud, my Lord, above all.

I long to leave an impact, on this generation's soul,
To show them there's a true love that can make them whole,
But I'm just a vessel, imperfect and weak, Yet I know it's not about me, but the love You seek.

So I'll do the right thing, in Your loving sight,
For it's Your grace that guides me, Your strength that ignites,
I hate my daily struggles, but I'll press on through,
With every step I take, may they bring glory to You.

I surrender my desires, my hopes, and my dreams,
For in Your hands I’m found - my soul’s freed and redeemed,
I'll walk in Your footsteps, with faith as my guide,
And let Your love and grace be my true strength inside.

Oh, God, help me to shine, in this place so dark,
Shine your light, joy, and peace, leave a lasting mark,
In this mixed and messed up world, help me to stand true,
For the only One I want to please or make proud is You.

Help me surrender my life to You - the One who saves,
In Your love and mercy, my soul finds its place,
With every breath I take, I'll strive to do what's right,
For in pleasing, You, God, I find my true delight.

I once was lost and blind, but now
I’m found and can see;
A sinner saved by grace;
a sinner saved and at peace

Your love let’s me live.
Your blood heals and forgives.
Your kingdom is yet to come
And yet, your kingdom already is.
You rose and were seen.
You still reign supreme.
You’ll soon return, surely.
All glory to the KING.

I want to please the Spirit, honor and glorify,
To care for those around me, as the days go by,
Though I fail daily, I know what I must do:
Choose to surrender my life, Lord, and follow You.

[James 4:6]

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
Lean ******* the arm everlasting, availing;
The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

In spite of our pride, he washed our feet.
Our stomachs pained; He led a feast.
Our mouths grew dry. He quenched all thirst.
Our minds unversed - he confided his trust.

We gave him betrayal when he gave us bread.
We turned our backs. He pursued us instead.
We chose rebellion. He allowed our will.
We schemed at night. His light shone, still.

While we chose darkness - at night, he prayed.
We sold him out. Unmoved, he stayed.
We chose silver coin. He chose the cross.
Judas brimmed with regret; Jesus' life was the cost.
So Judas hung himself.

We knew not then, the price Jesus paid.
Our sins, exposed, succumb to grace.
He would, soon, resurrect after three long days.
While Judas' corpse remained in the grave.

Do we choose for ourselves a noose of regret, sin, and death?
Or do we bind faith and love around our neck?
Do we relate more to this pre-Calvary Judas?
Or do we pursue relations with this Jesus who pursues us?
The night has come.

No, we’re not perfect, love requires work and the lessons we learnin confirm that it’s worth it. Some days I feel worthless, lost under the surface, not stellar, imperfect, failing in my purpose. Pushing through the storm, my brain cloud couldn’t form enough rain to delay our parade - getting warm. Persevere under trial, diamonds form under pressure, for better or worse, love is life’s greatest treasure. I’m glad we didn’t quit, when at times we felt inadequate. Feelings, although valued, don’t lead or make choices, the heart of one’s soul’s more than changing emotions. Love’s more than a thought, or a feeling, when chosen, it’s action, flows through us, a motion so golden. Put love on display, put love into practice, and know since we married, we really be practicing…” 💯 But for real, keep practicing. Much Love‼️

Let love be sincere/genuine. ROMANS 12:9

Love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." 1 PETER 4:8

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends… 1 COR 13:4-8

Long distance is hard
Hate sleeping alone
Awake throughout the night
Not holding your own

Overthink, toss, and turn
Tomorrow is here
How the rising sun beams
But your conscious aint clear

Cloudy and foggy
Full of emotions and memory
Missing the ones you love
Longing for their presence and energy

Expecting for the time
That you could unite
Unsettled until then
Trying so hard to fight

For that day to come
Close, in each other's arms
At last, the distance
Doesnt feel like fatal thorns

How quick do you jump when Im up and you see the phone was right next to me? You scroll and search, hope to find dirt, and continue second guessing me...

Sweatin me, when you taking certain things out of context, stressin me, when I tell you how Im tryna be honest, selling me, tellin me how you respecting my process, only to continue to do the same thing again and again like you obsessed...

Its not a sport, nor is it fun, when it feels like there's a gun, behind my back and at my head, wishing what we had was dead...

But you still not using words to talk to me or ask me first, to let me know what thoughts still linger, what doubts you have or your distrust...
You tell me all is fine; that you have nothing to say, then we go to bed at the end of the day

16 and pregnant, 17 with triplets,
19 with 4 kids, I don't know how you did it.

School, work, motherhood.
Way back then, we had it good.
Mind of a child, I misunderstood
what it took to raise us - but be
reassured:

You did the best you could and we know it.
Times got hard and we couldn't really show it.
You stood strong as you tried to keep focus;
Hid your pain and tears just so we wouldn't notice

all the mental battles you were going through.
I wish I manned up better to look after you.
Blind to the darkness that tried to dazzle you.
Didnt realize you was only tryna make it through

to the next day, you tried to pave a way,
for us to make it out them trenches and see brighter days,
Major struggles in the slums taught us major lessons,
To keep strong and move on, for that, you’re a major blessing

15 and stubborn was when I walked away
17, I signed them papers, 18, I left to train
19, & on my own, yet the thought
hadn’t hit my brain
It was at this stage of your life where things began to change. It was at this age...

School, work, motherhood.
Way back then, we had it good.
Mind of a child, I misunderstood
what it took to raise us - but be
reassured:

You did the best you could and we know it.

We all got stories.
Stories are life's language;
language impacts perception - our
own, others, and nations.
"Stories dispossess, stories malign,
stories empower, stories humanize,
stories rob and break dignity,
stories repair whats broken..."
Single stories are scanty.
All stories, stitched together,
complete the composition of you.
Many stories matter - yours.
If your life were a book,
what would people read about?
We all got stories.
Share them. All of them.
[they MATTER]
XIII. Making History

Inspired by Chimamanda Adichie's speech, "The Danger of a Single Story."

In the midst of uncertainty for tomorrow or even today, there's a confidence and courage found within that forces us to win.
-
This grind. This grit. This goal-oriented, goal-achieving, gift-cultivating, courageous and confident, bold, brave spirit, comes from a place of hope, and that hope being for change.
XLVI. MARCHING ONWARD (PART 1)
-
Inspired by some of the words from the late Martin Luther King Jr., present-day people pushing in life, and other current circumstances...
-
"THIS IS OUR HOPE... THIS IS THE FAITH WE GO BACK TO... LET FREEDOM RING... FREE AT LAST [ONE DAY]..."
