Downpour
MicMag Jul 2018
Lost souls in the desert
In parched lands so dry
Raise hands in delight
As heavens open wide
Rain comes crashing down
Pouring from a heavy sky
Drenching the world
In echoing mournful cries
Of ocean's lament:

You pollute me

But why?

Do I not
Please your eyes?
Do I not also
Nurture
Provide?

I teem with life
Of infinite worth
I team with the wind
Sustain the earth

Yet you trash me
Without second thought
With countless byproducts
Of industrial rot
You don't relish my beauty
You don't savor my taste
You don't bask in my fragrance
No, you send me your waste

And still I give

As long as you live
I'll love you the same
I'll carry your boats
I'll feed you my fish
I'll send you the rain

So when the skies darken
Precipitation pours forth
Let it remind
Of how much you use me
Oh, please don't abuse me
No, please be kind
And treasure my worth
The rain today
brings the ocean
and life
and musings
and guilt
and call to action

Smithereens
MicMag Mar 2019
We were all connected
In a very real sense
The universe packed
So infinitely dense

Then instantly exploding
Bursting at the seams
Singularity in harmony
Blown to smithereens

Each poem in this series is prompted by a word from a list I recently discovered of "the 70 most beautiful words in the English language," according to an international survey by the British Council.

(Not) Falling
MicMag Aug 2018
I'm leaning waaaay out
Over the crumbling edge
Toes teetering precariously
Perched upon the ledge

Long gaze lingering
On the nothingness below
Longing for the plunge

As I joyfully let go

Momentum surges forward
At last, here comes relief

But suddenly I stop
In suspended disbelief

Vice grip on my shoulders
Mysterious force reaches out
I'm stuck staring downward
Upon my desired route

I yearn for release
I ache to take the leap

But Insomnia won't set me free
To plummet into Sleep
Insomnia is a cruel mistress

Is the best "waste of time"
This is my 100th published poem on HP.

It's been a fantastic ride sharing in this poetry community, reading brilliant works of art, sparking new ideas, and seeing the power in our words.

Poetry and other forms of art are sometimes derided as a "waste of time." I already disagreed with that sentiment but this past half year or so has shown me again the real value in both reading and writing poetry. So thank you, fellow poets, for making this a great artistic community truly worth our time!
Mil gracias and here's to hundreds more!

Poet's Mind
MicMag Jul 2018
The mind of a poet is such a curse
Its search for words an endless thirst

Poets cannot sit and simply be
Soak in the splendor of all they see

Confronted with beauty which defies description
A quest for lyrics is the poet's prescription

Thinking wordy expression will enhance the sublime
Poets lose the chance to be lost in time

Though graced with wonder again and again
The poet can't find that elusive zen
I sat this week and watched a stunning sunset over the mountains.
And my mind was spinning the whole time looking for the words to describe the incredible sight.
And before I knew it, the sun had set on me, my relaxed enjoyment of the moment, and ironically, on my creative spark as well.
There were no words, but stupid me tried to find them anyway.

My Secret Sin
MicMag Aug 2019
She lays before me
So enticing
So exciting
Inviting me
To delight in her flavors
To savor her taste
Her hidden treasures
Imparting pleasure
Slowly relishing
Without haste
Her flesh between my lips
Juices flowing, teasing the tip
Of my tongue
With the taste of the one
I'm ravenously craving
Now I'm left satisfied
Raving with joy
Basking in euphoria
Just what I came for
Feeling shameful but blessed
So I have to confess
I'm (mostly) vegetarian
But sometimes I cheat
God, I love a good burger
Can't resist that red meat
Probably the most sultry salute to a burger I've ever written

Excess
MicMag Aug 2018
What percentage of the time

do you lie in that bed?
     the rest a waste
          of the metal springs
                    forged by
                    factory workers
                    pouring in their
                    unpaid overtime
                    to meticulously
                    shape the steel
                    into just the right
                    comforting bounce
     a waste
          of the soft cotton cover
                    picked by
                    (slave-descended) hands
                    white fluff
                    still echoing centuries
                    of black oppression
                    spun on foreign looms
                    shipped back
                    across the seas
                    dyed, woven,
                    stretched taut
                    into just the right
                    soothing texture
     a waste
          of the foam stuffing
                    made from...
                    whatever goes into
                    foaminess...
     how many hours wasted?
     daily
     weekly

What percentage of the time

do you write with that ballpoint pen?
     the rest a waste
          of the clear plastic casing
                    melded from petroleum
                    by corporations
                    extracting black gold
                    in exchange
                    for greenhouse gases
     a waste
          of the tiny perfect sphere
                    rolling smoothly along
                    tungsten carbide surface
                    exquisitely crafted
                    for maximum efficiency
                    by man's finest machines
                    factories churning out
                    thousands by the hour
     a waste
          of the bright blue ink
                    the mysterious mixture
                    of dyes and pigments
                    and oils and surfactants
                    spilling onto the page
                    recording your
                    delicate thoughts
                    in desperate
                    existential hope
they won't be as oft ignored
                    as that device
                    from which they pour forth
     how many hours wasted?
     monthly
     yearly

What percentage of the time

do you sit in that reclining chair?
do you walk in those polished dress shoes?
do you eat with that bent spoon?
do you style your hair with that fine-toothed comb?
do you turn the pages of your favorite book?
do you see by lamp's light in the guest bedroom?

     how many hours
     sitting unused, wasted?
          in a life
Ever thought about how much of the time the things we so desperately "need" sit around unused, unneeded? What a waste of resources and the time spent to craft them! What excess!!

MicMag Oct 2019
I'm a Texas boy
Born and raised
In the greatest and the proudest
Of the United States
Grew up in the shadows
Of them loblolly pines
This oil boom town
Sweet home o' mine

But I left it behind
To see the world
Traveled the globe
Just me and my girl
Meeting new people
Trying new things
Embracing and facing
Whatever life brings

But no matter where I've been
'cross God's green earth
My blood's kept me rooted
To my place of birth
And if you ain't from 'round here
Maybe you don't understand
You can take the man outta Texas
Can't take Texas outta the man

is it important to rhyme?
do the cool kids care?
will they give me the time
if the 4th line ends in a different sound than line B?

the nature of poetry's changed
we've given up the rules
we allow a greater range
of thoughts and rhythms and forms and types and schemes and what not

you can even follow tradition
writing old-school poems
but make it special edition
by ******* with people's minds and changing one little structural thing mwahaha

will this trend stick?
can i name this new style?
or should i just pick
whatever words come to mind to wrap up this so-called-poem
and make people wonder what the hell they just read?

Long Gone
MicMag Jul 2019
When one disappears
The world keeps on spinning
The saints keep on sainting
And the sinners keep on sinning

When one disappears
Some may stop to wonder
But only a chosen few
Feel their souls torn asunder

When one disappears
Most await new dawn
But some live an endless night
Once their soulmate's gone

Nightfall
MicMag Nov 2018
seated
on a bright yellow stone slab bench
beside a cobblestone path
diving steeply into dark forest

my page illuminated
by the last trace of filtered sunlight
this overcast Friday eve

mountains peeking through low clouds
marking dark silhouettes
against a blue-gray southeast sky
hints of pink paint the western clouds
softly bidding us goodnight

scattered shouts
and musical notes
waft up from the town's bars below
dancing through the trees
flowing to the rhythmic folklore
of the local vallenato band

night closes in
darker each minute
the thin yellow crescent overhead
seizes its moment
shining brighter and louder
through the wispy clouds

as mountains emerge at last from fog
they dissolve just as quickly
into the black sky

all vibrant hues melt away
the bench transforms
dark yellow becomes gray
beneath my weight

one last vestige of color lingers on
the dull red burning on the horizon
sparks an inner fire of gratitude
for every second of light
every second of life

my page descends into darkness
written thoughts plunge back
into the unexpressed depths of the mind

Night falls.

staring at screens
MicMag Jul 2018
i sit awake
in an empty room
staring at a screen

while she lies awake
in another room
staring at a screen

i slowly wake up
roll over in bed
stare at a screen

she's already up
eating oatmeal
staring at a screen

i pour my coffee
sit down with my cereal
staring at a screen

where'd the day go?
already late afternoon
staring at a screen

i refill my water
gulp down some health
staring at a screen

a neighbor drops by
just to say hi
and stare at a screen

time to prep dinner
need a recipe
so i stare at a screen

chop chop chop
cooking up a storm
staring at a screen

sit down together
sharing a meal
staring at screens

scrubbing the pots
drying the plates
staring at screens

plopping down on the couch
resting from a long day
of staring at screens

crawl into bed
kiss goodnight
stare at a screen
Are the screens staring back?

I just want to grin
And against despondency
I just want a win

Still left wondering the same questions.

How will we remember and honor those who died?

How (and to what) will we rise?

Einmal Ist Keinmal
MicMag Jul 2019
Once is never
Or at least never enough
Life can be quite tough
But einmal ist keinmal

Let's try something new
See if it rings true
That despite what we do
Einmal ist keinmal

No inhibitions, no regrets
Do what we feel like
And never forget
Though einmal ist keinmal

Take risks, be bold
Don't harden your soul
Nor grow stale and old
Einmal ist keinmal

Live in the present
Be now, be here
Have no fear of the future
Cause einmal ist keinmal

Feel this lightness of being
As if nothing matters
Our significance shattered
Einmal ist keinmal

Sieze the moment
Give it your all
Live life to the fullest
Knowing full well
Einmal ist keinmal
Inspired by recent philosophical reflections on the German phrase "einmal ist keinmal", roughly translated as once is never.

The moon's not a crescent

It doesn't shine
It doesn't hang in the air
It doesn't show your love
Or mine

Blood moons? Not ******
Blue moons? Not blue
Super moons? Not so super
New moons? Anything but new

Superstitious? Full moons
Don't fill the earth with fright
Don't induce labor
Nor raise werewolves
In the night

No man in the moon
Hate to break it to you
Moon's mysterious myths
Mere legends
All untrue

These unscientific lyrics
Carelessly thrown around
What a load of crock!

The moon is nothing more
Than a cold empty sphere
A pale lifeless rock

And this just in
From all the moonlight lovers:
So is my soul, what a shock!

MicMag Aug 2018
just so tired
of being mired
in the endless fatigue
that works in league
with the utter exhaustion
that makes me feel lost in
the ruthless lethargy
that keeps on charging

just need some shut eye
so desperately, but I
can't catch up on rest
settled into my nest
breathing slow and deep
still can't fall asleep
counting sheep in droves
but unable to doze

instead ironically
I lay here chronically
stuck wide awake
unable to shake
the conscious mind's grip
unable to slip
into the world of dreams
escaping what seems
the waking mind's prison
as insomnia, risen
to almighty omnipotence
flexing its eminence
wards off all the threats
that maybe would let
this body start healing
and this mind stop feeling

so tired
of being mired
in the endless fatigue
that works in league
with the utter exhaustion
that makes me feel lost in
the ruthless lethargy
that keeps on charging

without end

insomnia strikes again
need sleep
can't sleep

United?
MicMag Sep 2018
Never has this nation stood as tall
As the day after its great fall
But now?
So many years after we've risen?
Not in ages have we seen such division

Divided we fall
   and united we stand?
Have we somehow flipped
   the values of this land?
That terrible day
   mourning hand in hand
Has faded away
   to competing demands
   of Make Us Greats
   and Yes We Cans

Now we stand opposed
   diametrically divided
Wondering
   if ever again
   we'll stand
   happily united
In reflection of the national unity in the days following 9/11/01, and where we've gone ever since.

My vacation is ending
Don't want to go back
Relaxation's been trending
So cut me some slack

Savoring time
On this great getaway
All so sublime
Don't throw it away

Which would you choose
If given election?
Diversion with views
Or desk-job dejection?

Surely you'll understand
My utter dismay
Even lend me a hand
To rediscover the way

How can I cope
As I reintegrate?
Should I just say nope
Or pretend it's all great?

Back to life with the locals
The doom so impending
Hesitation so vocal
My vacation is ending
All good things must come to an end.
Or some other cliché crap
to cope with my denial.
Back to the grind,
Dreaming of the next escape!

But as I stared in silence
Twilight rolled across the sky
Revelation rolled right through my mind
How miniature am I

Though others turned their gaze away
When the sky refused to preen
Twas among the most magnificent

Continuing to experiment with poetic forms. Here I combined a few forms and took another stab at writing in Spanish.

2 bilingual haikus - "Baiku"? :) used for a contrapuntal (combining the two by alternating lines to make a third poem), creating a new set of rhyming triplets. It doesn't quite carry a dual meaning like a good contrapuntal but I like the way it sounds anyway.

for richer or poorer
for better or worse
now i'd like
to add this verse

in presence or absence
together or apart
you're on my mind
you own my heart

picturing you
here with me
my mind's eye
can clearly see

you're in front and behind
to my left and my right

(nope -- still gone)

just wish you were here
by my side tonight

Nothing like the open road
Unburdening life's heavy load
Unbridled freedom was bestowed
Til the day
My car got towed

Presence in Ausencia
MicMag Jul 2019
Hey, where you been?
Long time, no see!
Donde has estado?
Y por qué no aquí?

The honest truth is
I was never really gone.
Si prestan atención
Siempre me verán.
It's been ages since I've written here.
But did I ever really leave?...

a little antilove
MicMag Nov 2018
like all, I yearned to love
in spite of potential pain
but now this anti-love bites hard
agony and shock surge through my veins

an army of fury and contempt
rush forth, crown fear both queen and king
this anti-love marches on
attacking with rage-inducing sting

but I can't hate this anti-love, no
I confess when push comes to shove
I cherish the teensy bits of joy
I share with the little ant I love

Damn Good Friend
MicMag Aug 2018
when it's been so long
you can't even remember
the last time
you laughed together

you can't even recall
what the last words were

months have passed
years
decades
centuries
eons

but it feels like
just yesterday
just this morning
five minutes ago

when the smiles return
the laughter flows free
the jokes pick right back up
where they left off

that's a
****.
good.
friend.

sometimes love (2)
MicMag Aug 2018
sometimes love's just broken
you're not sure how to fix it
not sure if you should nix it

sometimes love calls out from far away
you're not sure what to do
not sure what to say

sometimes love keeps calling you back
you're not sure where to go
not sure, yes or no

sometimes love just wants you
sometimes you want love

sometimes love makes no sense
sometimes love is ordained from above
sometimes love don't feel like love

sometimes love follows me
sometimes love can last
sometimes love won't leave me alone
sometimes love won't pass

lame lovely night (2)
MicMag Jul 2018
Here's some things
I'd love to do tonight
Why don't you pick one?

But you just plopped down
And feel asleep
Well that was lots of fun...

But now at least
I can watch you sleep
That's a nice compromise

The only problem's
With lids shut tight
Can't stare into your eyes

They Fucking Suck
MicMag Jul 2018
I hate the word ****
So harsh so crass
Used as a crutch when thoughts get stuck

But the one thing I hate
More than the word ****

Is these ******* mosquitoes
They ******* ****
Mosquitoes are the one creature fully deserving
to have every vulgarity in every language heaped upon them.
Little *******.

View from my couch
MicMag Aug 2018
two floor fans
perched side by side

one at full blast
******* in air
blowing it out
without a care
who's there
to receive

the other
half the height
black as night
silver blades silenced
unstirring
gazing into the distance
in solemn stillness
metallic meditation

three empty chairs around an empty table

sometimes filled with food
filled with people
filled with life

but now just ghosts
relics of the
(whatever came before
whatever comes after)

in the moment
nothing more than a waste of hard plastic
and glossy green paint
fossil fuels drawn from deep within the earth
so much life destroyed
so three ugly four-legged lifeless objects
can sit around a table
and share in the quiet nothingness

cat curled up asleep underneath
indifferent to the chairs' lack of conversation
indifferent to the fans' competing notions
of making the most of lifeless life
indifferent to everything
as only cats
and fans
and chairs
can be

Love & Amistad
MicMag Aug 2018
Hola mi amiga
Let's talk 'bout what we had
The strongest bonds of friendship
Un fuerte amistad

Nothing came between us
No podían separarnos
We shared all our sueños
And hoped to alcanzarlos

Pero esa noche, it all changed
When once our lips did meet
Your touch became tan dulce
Tus palabras just as sweet

El amor exploded in our lives
Mi vida became yours
Y nuestra friendship grew still deeper
Con pasión y so much more

Y quién sabe qué hubiera pasado
Si we didn't break each other's hearts
Pero si pudiera salvar la amistad
I'd nix us 'fore the start
Spent the last few years immersed in Spanish so trying to branch out and write more bilingual stuff.

Espero que disfruten el poema!

all the What Ifs
MicMag Feb 2019
What if I'd taken the other path?
Had chosen X instead of Y?
What if I'd turned left instead of right?
What if I'd been a girl instead of a guy?

What if I'd studied this or that?
Been born a king instead of a pawn?
What if I'd taken the other job?
What if I'd stayed instead of gone?

What if I hadn't lived this same life
Leading to here, now, this?
What if I'd never even thought
To ask all these what ifs?
