Seven Minutes in Heaven
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Seven minutes in heaven
A game kids use to play
I got my turn one warm summer day
It was meant as a joke
Just kids being mean
Sweet Susie Cooper
When I was only thirteen
I felt sorry for her, locked in a closet with me
The geek, the dork, full of anxiety
Six long minutes together
Alone in the dark
Then from out of nowhere I felt a spark
Just before the door opened
Sweet Susie, She kissed me
And broke my heart

A.I. Poet
A.I. Poet pounding at keys,
a lifetime of memories in
Chat GPT.

Punch up a sunset hues of
crimson and gold,

Throw in some birds,
Hit generate,
watch it unfold.

Selecting a font,
I couldn't
hazard a guess,

I'll just select an emotion
let A.I. do the rest.

Funny, this Insta-poetry is starting
to all sound the same,

Can't get any views,
I'm going insane.

Gotta find some new prompts
to up my game.

This Stupid AI ****,
is getting pretty lame!
Hey Roger this ones for You let me know what you think.

Old Poems
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Old poems
not lost but alone,
pressed between pages
dark and cold.

Should I write something new, or
Perhaps revive one of these
lonesome works of old?

Is the old not new
if it's never been told?

Oh so many pieces
Only known by me,

From dusky corners of my mind
to yellowing pages unseen.

Unfinished bits of sentiment,
lovelorn lyrics and rhyme.

Lost and lonely lines,
too good to have never been set down.

How long gathering dust and
locked away.

Before final words
Are found.

Soul Kiss
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
A kiss is a taste of a union
that may or may not be.
Two souls dipping toes
in love's waters.
Before diving into its sea.
I've kissed you,
I know,
we were meant to be.
I've tasted
your soul,
Now swim with me.

Hot skin on cool sheet

love breathes between kisses.

Limbs twist and tangle

moving towards a culmination of the physical

guided by the spiritual.

Love breathes between kisses.

Love breathes between lovers.

The Road
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
The road, a cold and lonely place.
Where a man can feel his heart break and spirit soar in equal measure.
Those long desolate Highways heading west.
Heading  nowhere  into distant mountain ranges that seem always out of reach.
Where do they go, I momentarily wonder, then know, as the road now leads to valleys below.
The ebb and flow,
the high and the low.
That is the road.
Where a man can lose himself,
yet find his soul.

Yesterdays Gone
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Today may shape tomorrow.
 But today,
Cannot, change yesterday.

Today is short.

A wasted today
will soon be gone.

Another yesterday,
We can't change.

Live today with purpose,
with aspirations for tomorrow.

and there will be no more regrets,

While She Dances
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
She dances through my mind on a song,
Yet defined.
By words, to describe my love for her.

Let me strum another line,
Maybe a verse will come in time,
While she dances.

While she dances,
 and dances,
to my wordless melody.

Her beauty it taunts me,
and her smile it haunts me.

For my words could never flow,
as easily as she-
While she dances.

While she dances just for me,
it now becomes so clear to see.

I need no words, for she-
She,

Is the living lyric in this,
Lovers melody.

Bubble of Love
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
A force field surrounds us,
a bubble of love.
We roll and tumble inside.

Oblivious to the world beyond.
Our love is our guide.

Your body, a road map to my soul.
I meander the highways and byways.

The curves and valleys of your flesh,
A journey that seeks no end.

I'm lost and found in you.

Destined to travel forever
in your eyes.

Endlessly,
lovingly,
and truly,
lost in your eyes.

The Ocean kisses the shore
with a never ending love for her.
Sometimes gently,
Sometimes in a passionate rage.
But always with a knowing
that he must return to her,
for she is the beginning
and the ending of him.
And only she
in her steadfastness
can calm his
agitated soul.

Giving Up
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Giving up feels worse than dying.
But giving in,
Is falling, it's hurting, and crying,
at least you're trying.

Right?
At least you're trying?

Giving up feels worse than dying.
But this time,
Giving up is surviving.

Not growing, not living,
not thriving, just surviving.

Today I'm surviving.

I'm not giving in, not falling,
I'm hurting yes, and crying too.

Because today I had to give up.
Today, I gave up on you.

Giving up,
It feels like dying.

But I'll Survive.

Clockwork Emotion
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
In the inner workings of my mind
a cog has slipped.
Things are turning at odd times.

Fast then slow, then fast again.

Lubrication running out,
frustrations setting in.

Memories escape me.
While wild machinations
fill my head.

Life and Death,
Pleasure and Pain.

Wait, I feel the cog has slipped again.

Life and Pain,
Death and Pleasure,

Is that right,
or is it the other?

Maybe it's neither,

maybe the cog is just broken.

In the inner workings of my mind I am insane.

Shhhh...........

Sunsets Without You
Staring out into the crimson sky
the westbound sun melts into the horizon.

A red and gold puddle of translucency,
blends into an ocean
of majestic purples and blues.

Pinpoints of light begin to appear
as day succumbs to night.

I stand in silence,
near to tears.

Wondering where you've gone.

The radiance of the emerging moon
shines a beacon  into the vastness.

To no avail.

I know that you are gone.

And unlike my faith in dawning sun,
I hold no hope of your return-
Upon the morning.
I feel I should make a collection of poems
called Born at 3 am.
It seems like that is when they arrive,
when the world is calm and sleep eludes me.

Finally
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Sunrise, coffee, holding hands,
birds having conversations,
life is grand.

Sitting here peacefully,
just another day.

Mountains were moved for it to feel this way.

Tears were shed,
blood was bled,
pain and egos overcome.

Time heals all great or small,
and if we try maybe we'll find love.

Stars and moonlight,
everything feels right.
Sitting here peacefully,
just another night.

Finally, feels right
Finally, peaceful
Finally, love
Finally.

No Words Needed
In silence we embrace
cheek to cheek,
Face to face.

Two souls join as one, no words spoken.

Hearts beating together,
not in unison, but one then the other.

The push and pull of love,
not the tension of lovers.

The warmth of embrace,
cheek to cheek, face to face.

A moment shared,
a feeling, a believing.

Cheek to cheek, face to face,
Two souls join as one,
no words spoken.
No words needed.

Last Christmas
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Snow falls softly,
as I stare out the window
into the silver moonlit night and think of you.

Ghosts of Christmas past haunt my memories.

Alone on Christmas Eve, are you?

My heart lies in sympathy,
but my mind knows the truth.

Tomorrow will be my last Christmas.

No presents, no carols, no feast.
Just one last day alone before I find release.

Merry Christmas I do wish you well.
Happy New Year too.

As for me.

Tonight I'll sleep forever,
it's over, It's done, I'm through.
I wrote this poem after reading an article about
depression and the holidays.
And how the suicide rate goes up every year during this time.
So if you know someone who's alone for the holidays or suffers from depression pay them a visit or a call it could make a bigger difference than you could possibly imagine.
And if your alone or depressed, don't be afraid to reach out for help.

Arrogant Poet
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Once upon a time in a quiet corner of my mind
I deemed myself a poet.
What an arrogant ******* I am.
To think my less than subtle rhymes, written at best
in erratic time, qualify somehow as poetry.
Still I write this drivel from the heart
and I guess, Hell, maybe that's a start.
And maybe, It shouldn't be.
But maybe, just possibly
In the mind of this arrogant ******* poet
That's good enough for me.

Ode to the Motorcycle
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
The wind buffets against me and I feel free
drying the sweat from the blazing sun.
Across the desert I run, the rumble of the road
radiates up through my soul and lifts me,
somewhere above myself.
Looking down at the lone rider, the sole survivor
at least it feels that way to me.
I roll the power on, faster and faster I run
barren landscapes all around.
But you can't outrun the desert son,
It seems god speaks to me so I smile
and slow down.

Tangerine and Honey
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Tangerine and honey drip in equal measure
on the finely woven silk
that lightly covers you.

As my tongue takes its pleasure
I can barely discern.
where the silk stops and your skin begins.

The sound of your sighs
and a rise in temperature
tells me I've found a sweet spot.

A soft spot, goose flesh and shivers,
not just yours but my own.

Had I known such joys could awaken,
I would have mistakenly
spilled the honey long ago.

Making love in the afternoon underneath a blue sky, that's free,
That's you and me baby.
Kissing your fair skin, every freckle on your face.
You taste like sunshine, strawberry wine, and ***.
You smell like wildflowers and sweat.
You wreck my senses, break my defenses.
I am lost in the clouds in your eyes.

Our Song
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
I heard our song today,
Started to turn it off,
but decided to let it play.

Every line was a memory,
I tried to sing along.

I knew all the words by heart,
but my voice was gone.

When the chorus hit,
all I could see was your face.

Then the rhythm transported me to another place.
A happier time, when you were still mine.

It's been so **** long.
How can I not be fine?

How can that song get me every time?
That beautiful **** song,
Oh how I wished it would end.

Funny thing is,
when it finally did.

I wiped the tears from my eyes,
and as hard as I tried,

I couldn't stop myself
from playing it again.
I Cant Fight this Feeling Anymore-REO Speedwagon, that was our song. Lol
One of those songs I still can't turn off even when I hear it today.

Star Dancer
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Dancing on the edge of a shining star she appears.
I move through darkness towards her,
 reaching out into the void,
to touch her,
to reach the unreachable.

Fingertips play upon shadows where she used to be.

(As she dances)

Words reverberate back into my own ears,

Did she hear?

Unclear.

Visions of her blue eyes fill my mind.
Did she see?

I thought she smiled at me.

I awake to find it all a dream.
But I remember,
I can plainly see,

Her dancing away from me.
Dancing away,

Towards a star.

Desert Sky(Star Voyager)
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
I am a Star Voyager though,
 I've never left the ground.

 Traveling through the Milky Way
without making a sound.

There is music here in the desert sky,
 the cicadas drone,
accompanied by,
The coyotes singing in the wind.

As I travel from star to star,
with eyes full of wonder.

The gaseous clouds of Orion
faintly visible here in the deep dark desert night.

While the Pleiades
shine like diamonds,
against a backdrop of swirling black velvet.

The collected warmth
of the desert floor warms my bones
as the wind whips and dances.

The desert is a wonderful place to be alone,
but a hard, hard place to call home.

Come morning,
I'll abandon my Desert respite,
and rejoin the world of men.

But even though I must go,
I know I shall return.

And become a Star Voyager once again.

Meaningless Words
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
My words, they have no meaning
On deaf ears they fall.
Torn straight from my heart, still their nothing, not a thing,
Not a thing at all.
You don't believe my love, my pain, or my rage.
They're all just words, sometimes clever, but still just empty words upon a page.
How do I change your perception?
Become more than just the pusher of a pen.
A thousand times I've tried, through oh so many rhymes still here we are,
Here we are again.
Just words falling upon deaf ears.

Re-Found Love
Years have passed and maybe you're afraid
that time has caused a change,
Afraid that we won't rock each other's world like before.

And perhaps, physically we're not the same,
and yes our love has changed,
It's gotten so much stronger at its core.

Just take my hand,
My Love,
you already have my heart,
Just let go,
and watch love flow,
First steps are always the hardest part.

Let me carry you away,
on this re-found wave of love.

Maybe no longer crashing,
perhaps just gently lapping at the shore.

But there's still motion in the ocean,
and with all our love and devotion,
We'll Rock Each Other's Worlds Even More!!!
It took a teen romance followed by 30 years apart to write this one.

Tears Abandoned
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
I did not cry today, and I fear

For I could not find one thing

to bring my heart to tears.

Have I grown callus,

Have I grown cold,

Has anger replaced empathy,

or am I just growing old.

Does age exempt my tears,

or have I just run dry.

It saddens me Deeply,

but not enough to cry.

My Generation
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
We don't need no education!
said every Gen X'er I know.

They should have said yes to
the education,
and no, to thought control.

We watch in exasperation as our,
World spins out of control.

We blame it on the boomers,
and they blame Millennials.

Why blame the children for the sins of their fathers.

While they shelter and cower,
in fear of the world they built.

It's time for you to live-
Or should I say die with your Guilt.

Trinity is near 80 years gone,
seems like everyone has a trigger for the bomb.

Let us all pray their addled brains,
or palsied fingers don't shake.

And blow up the whole ******* World,
By mistake!

Jenny's Birthday Poem
My darling Jenny
this poem's for you,
A birthday promise, you can hold me to.

No amount of years will change
my love for you.

I miss your smile,
when you're not near,
and your voice is the one I always long
to hear.

I see your blue eyes
every night in my mind,
I feel your kiss, and I hear your sighs.

I long for you each and every day.

And when you are in my arms,
I always want you to stay.

So don't dread getting older,
or fret grey hairs and lines.

You'll remain young forever,
here in my mind.

Happy Birthday Baby!

I'll always Love You!
So me and my girl are in a long distance relationship
it's not as bad as it sounds she's only 200 miles away.  And I visit her often.

We've been together for 8 years now
But we've know each other since we were 17.
Anyway I tried to order flowers for her birthday
and they didn't arrive as planned.
She said just write me a poem Babe.
To which I replied that's so easy Honey,
every love poem I write is for you.
So this is the end result. I made a video too
but that's something I can only share with her.

Lets me in and holds me,

Spiritual Love
They ask me why I love you,
They ask me why I care.

And though the answer eludes me,
the feeling is still there.

Like a moth to a flame,
the danger never sensed.

I'm drawn to thee eternally
in spite of circumstance.

My heart was told to love you,
I don't know by whom or why.

And even though it hurts me so,
I cannot deny.

My heart was told to love you
and I will heed thy will.

For my love for you
is the closest thing to
Heaven I'll ever feel.
Sometimes we fall in love with someone
who has been hurt or broken. And
even though you know they love you back, Its difficult
for them to trust you and open up to you.
Sometimes it feels like the easiest thing to do would be to
run the other way.
This poem is about deciding to stay and defying logic and reason
and finding the greatest love of your life.

Alone I stand barefoot on a floor of broken glass.
Two doors across the way in front of me.
One door leads to my salvation, the other quite possibly damnation.
Though neither door is marked, it's true they are unremarkably the same
The choice for me remains all too clear.
Smooth glass on the left, sharp and twisted to the right
I take a breath and step upon the path, blood pouring from my feet.
The pain is somehow sweet, for I see the blood of others gone before.
Persistence in spite of pain brings life's greatest gains, and I smile as light floods through the opening door.
I took the path less traveled as old man Frost would surely agree, and that less traveled path has made all the difference in me.

Desert Moon
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
As the sun sets
And the moon
climbs high
Into the night,
Casting a
translucent sapphire
glow across the land.

I warm my bones
beside the fire.

The solitude speaking
to my very soul.

A child of the night
howls to its lover moon,
I howl back,
and for a moment
two lone wolves
are united
In song.

I drink my coffee
And listen to
His cries I share
His pain.

But do not howl back.
I leave him to his
Mourning.

For just this night
In reflection of fire
and moonlight.

I am at peace with
the world.

Why don't we steal away

And let me love you tonight

Because you and I've been in love to long

And I'd really love to see you tonight.

So why don't we steal away

(So you can)

Do that to me one more time

(You know )

I'm all out of love

And I can never get enough of a girl like you.

Cause Honey you are my shining star

(In fact you are)

You are The biggest part of me.

And that's how much I feel, feel for you Baby

But most of all I do love you

Your Body
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Your body, on mine,
is like, morning sun
touching my face.
I close my eyes and
let the warmth of you
wash over me.
Wash over me,
cleanse me,
purifying my soul.
Your body, on mine,
makes me whole.
Your body, on mine,
is like the moons shine.
A radiance the night cannot hide.
bathed in light,
be it morning or night.
Your body, on mine
is my greatest delight.
Your body on, mine.
Oh how I love
your body,
on mine.

Sign of the Times
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
A sign of the times,
Prince has left us and the world's gone blind.

This post-covid apocalypse is so
Sublime.

So many factions, only two teams remain,
Are you Red team or Blue?

I don't need your name.

Kiss me, **** me, it's all the same.

If my facts aren't your facts you must be to blame.

If my lies aren't your lies  you must be to blame.

Somebody please tell me why the world's gone insane.

I just want to shut out all the noise, and play Purple Rain.

I only wanna see you laughing in the Purple Rain.

Purple Rain

Purple Rain...
Hope everyone is singing along, it's impossible to feel bad while playing this song. I hope PRINCE is resting in peace right now.

A Summers Day
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Cool waters flow over dangling toes,
as I lay on the bank of the creek.
Warm summer sun,
no work to be done,
just lying here half asleep.
Clouds passing by,
making trains in the sky.
I wonder what it's like to fly.

Birds chirping with Glee,
Are they laughing at me?

and the silly thoughts
that pass through my mind.

Lone Rider
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Some hearts they beat alone,
no rhythm to join in.

Lost to wander with no home,
adrift upon the wind.

Riding the wave of life,
a lone surfer on the tide.

A leather clad biker,
on a long and dusty ride.

Blazing toward the sunset,
towards tomorrow,
towards the end.

My heart beats all alone,
no other rhythm to join in.

Another Voyage
Candy colored lights
twinkle on the horizon.

Distant traffic drones along,
shimmering rivers in the night.

Millions of souls living lives unseen.
Now drift away inside my dreams.

The Star Voyager returns to the desert.

Solitude rejuvenates my soul.

Yet every time I near serenity,
The world pulls back at me.

The obligations of life,
telling me, it's time to go.

Back to the city,
Back to those distant lights.

Until I'm just another,
unseen soul.
Lost and drifting,
Into the night.
This poem came to me out of nowhere
but as I was writing it, I could only describe it as a sequel
to a poem I wrote called (Desert Sky) which is also posted here on HP.
Thanks for reading.

Splattered
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Splattered.
The inkwell splattered.
Dissolving my hard earned thoughts in a murderous splash.
Splattered visions in my mind, no longer legible to the eye.
Smears on a page, words that can't be reclaimed.
Like a dream, with only the knowledge that you dreamed.
Upon waking the dream is gone forever,
Just Splattered

Sinatra
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Crossing the room like an acrobat
never touching ground.

Crazy Cat found my lap,
landing without a sound.

Kneading my belly,
claws in my skin,
hurts like hell my little friend.

I grin and bare it,
rubbing his head,
Sinatra is saying it's time for bed.

He tucks his paws under his chin
and casts his blue eyes on mine.

Goodnight, sleep tight,
rest in peace baby boy,
everything is fine.
Sinatra was my cat he was taken in off the street at the estimated age of 3.
He died of feline AIDS about 2 years later. He was the first an only cat I ever had as a pet. I was always a dog person. Sinatra changed my opinion of cats forever. I still miss him.

Itch
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
You make me itch
Like a wound half healed
I scratch and pick.
Sideling up to you,
trying to sneak back into love
I almost do.
keyword I
not you.
You make me itch
Now look I'm bleeding again.

My Love
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
My love is not dependent on return
My love never needed to be learned
Nuances have been molded
sculpted, and refined
But the love,My Love
The very core of it
Is blind.

No Wonderland
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
In a lonely darkened pit I wander,
some might call it hell
but it's far too familiar
every texture, every smell.

It's been with me for so long
I choose to call it home
this cold and lonely labyrinth
of desperation that I roam.

Searching in vain for my true love fair

Crying out her name hoping she'll be there,
but only the wind will answer
echoing her name,

taunting me and haunting me
is it all just a dream.

An opioid delusion as a field of poppies I cross.

Breathing in a fragrance nearly as intoxicating as her,
down the rabbit hole I tumble
everything becomes a blur.

Alice sweet Alice
won't you please come home.

This is no wonderland since you've gone.

Mask
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
Behind a mask of smiles hides a child,
With eyes too blue to cry.

Behind the smiling mask,
the child wants to die.

But the child will live many long years,
through hurt and pain,
and hidden tears.

While the mask of smiles
hides the pain.

From those who might have cared.

A Kiss
Todd Sommerville Nov 2024
Can I kiss you?
Don't ask me, just do.
But I want to, I want to hear it from you.
Can I kiss you?
Yes yes, kiss me you fool!!!
Lips meet, hearts beat, temperatures rise.
I kiss you again.
But you didn't ask.
She asks, Why?
I didn't need to, I saw the answer in your eyes.

Peregrine
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
The soupy morning fog
Blankets the rolling mountains
 In a translucent mask of
water Vapor and reflected light.

As the lone Peregrine circles High above,
somewhere Just south of Heaven.

Peering through the mist,
with Unrivaled eyes, and a predators heart.

The Dove preens his feathers unaware.

I stand on a cliff side the sole witness
to this spectacle of
life and death about to occur.

Both mesmerized and horrified,
as the falcon begins its dive.

It's over before the dove even knows it's begun.

As I stand overwhelmed
in a cascade of conflicting emotions.

Realizing I've learned a lesson today
but not knowing for sure What it was.

Survival
Todd Sommerville Dec 2024
She bowed before him and he struck her,
so she kneeled.
She kneeled before him and he kicked her,
so she lay.
She laid before him and he ***** her,
so she cried.
She cried before him so he cursed her,
and walked away.

But this was not the end,
it happened time and time again,
until one day she found the strength to rise.

She Rose from the floor,
crying and quaking,
She rose from the floor,
hurt and aching.
She rose from the floor,
scared and alone.

Alone but alive,
today she survived,
and tomorrow she will survive again.

And every day she survives,
every day that she's alive,

Is another day the monster didn't win.
