Gone with the Wind
HTR Stevens Apr 2019
Far out in the ocean,
I saw my lover waving to me;
Her hair flew in the wind;
Oh, her smile was sweet as could be!

As I stood on the shore,
The parting seemed like a dream to me;
Soon I was unable,
To distinguish my love from the sea.

Smaller and smaller grew,
The huge grand liner against the blue;
Yet was the little hand
Waving, waving its tearful adieu.

Oh, sweet little sister,
So very close and dear to my heart!
It was a sad dreamer,
Who realised that Death had shot its dart!

Oh, sweet little sister,
You dwell sadly in my memory;
You walk the earth no more,
But your voice I hear, your image see.

My Garden
HTR Stevens Apr 2019
If my house be but a garden,
I’ll love it more than gold;
I’ll make it pretty like Eden,
One you’ll smile to behold.

The sun shall rise in the morning;
The moon shall shine by night
And dewdrops shall be adorning
The wonders in your sight.

The flowers shall dance in harmony
With playful butterflies,
And songs like those in Italy
Shall flood the evening skies!

I will make it look like Eden;
I’ll hear the wild bird’s call.
Oh, if I have but a garden,
I’ll need no house at all!

It is Not You I really Need
HTR Stevens Apr 2019
It is not you I really need;
Riches and fame are what you seek.
Person who loves in order to gain fame,
Which is the thing that wipes out a good name!

See if what I have written is true;
Think it over and be more careful.
I love _ _ more than you;
Thank you, good-day and adieu!

Your Eyes Showeth Truth
HTR Stevens Apr 2019
Your eyes showeth truth,
Full of amends;
But your heart is like a stone,
Causing others offence.

Your eyes showeth pity,
But your heart is like a stone;
So what is the use of sympathy,
In your eyes alone?

The Game is Over
HTR Stevens Mar 2019
The game is over, I tell you.
I am gonna to seek someone new.
I am not gonna to fall for you.
I have made up my mind to renew.

We can be friends again.
Our peace we may maintain.
No more make-believe love…
No more saying what you deserve.

I am not gonna to fall for you…
Adieu, adieu, adieu!
Say so if you want to be friends,
That we may once again shake hands.

** is the one you love and miss!
Go to her and she’ll give you a kiss!
And you will think that you are in bliss!
And I can just cross you off my list!

No One Was Like You
HTR Stevens Mar 2019
No one was like you
When I saw your face;
No one was like you
Oh, how my heart raced.

You never knew
When I looked into your face;
My love grew for you
As I took every pace.

Now I think of you
My heart aches with pain;
When I try to forget you
Nothing do I gain.

I cannot forget you
Every night I weep;
I always think about you
Before I fall asleep.

I have never loved
Anyone so much;
Do you deserve
The place in my heart?

Each time I see you
I fear you are deceived;
Tho’ I appear happy
My heart is filled with grief!

Each word I have written
Is not only for rhyme;
It is truth and imagination-
Is that such a crime?

What If...
HTR Stevens Feb 2019
What if the world that was once so bright
       be now hidden from my sight?
A world where people used to care
       is simply no longer there?
A world now built with concrete with no soul…
People struggling to live hand to mouth –
       just for their rice bowl?
Are we all wandering blindly into a dead end,
Taking for granted something will turn up
        round the bend?
How long can society survive without compassion
When caring for others is fast going out of fashion?

What if we’ve reached the top of the hill,
       we now have to roll down?
Not agreeing does not matter, we just have to
       look at our town.
There is no such thing as society in this day and age:
Life is about grabbing what you can while you can –
       there’s no gauge.
Giant hands grab all, just leaving behind
       dry morsels and crumbs.
The little people are left speechless, are
       horrified, struck dumb.
Once we had vision. Now the world around us
       is a wreck…
When life falls apart, we will all get it
       in the neck!

Beyond our Horizon
HTR Stevens Feb 2019
Not a soul stopped Jim from roam’in
                      the wild wild sea
While the foams o’er him were roll’in
                      and down went he
Into the depth of the water;
                      he cried in vain.
Mermaids crowned him in wonder;
                      he woke not again.

With eyes closed, his lips half smil’in –
                     down down went he
And friends’ calls were not far reach’in
                     into the sea
While dreamt he of gardens pretty –
                     far, far from real
Which were dreamt ne’er by you nor me -;
                     he’s dreaming still.

To one teacher we are little devils, little imps,
But to another we may be little cherubims.
As you see, my class has many a variety:
Mischievous, intellectuals, as well as the sleepy.
But this variety is what makes the world go round.
I do not like a class that is too sober and sound.
Seriousness does not make a mind care-free and easy;
Instead, too much seriousness can cause insanity.
HTR Stevens Jan 2019
In my dreams, my love, you will always be there…
Oft catching me out suddenly unaware:
Gently and softly we touch and kiss,
Lost in a sea of eternal bliss,
Like forever we will stay like this;
Always faithful to you, just to you, I swear.

A moment lasts forever, caught in a frame –
Every page I turn, the picture stays the same:
A being so ethereal and free,
Another like you will never be,
A mo with you an eternity;
Quietly in your ear I whisper your name.

Drones for Christmas
HTR Stevens Jan 2019
Under the Christmas tree
Are toys for you and me:
First we have our personal phones;
Now, we can each have our own drones…
They fly high – they fly low –
Hovering to and fro.
Like eerie will-o’-the-wisp they fly…
Appearing like dust specks in the sky…
They fly high…they fly low…
We can’t see where they go…
Suddenly here! Silently there!
Like ghosts, they show up everywhere!
Like aliens, out of a nightmare –
Disappearing, ev’n as we stare…
Under the Christmas tree
Are drones for you and me…

Our Little Sunshine

You are our little sunshine –
Your colours in the rain.
You are your daddy’s and mine –
Our happiness and pain.
Wherever there’s a dark cloud –
You come out with a smile.
You’ve always made us feel proud –
You progress mile by mile.
You make our little rainbows –
You throw out little rays,
Even when it rains or snows –
During the wintry days.

My Lost Love
HTR Stevens Dec 2018
Her tongue was silent, and her lips were still;
She lay on a flowery bed, pale and chill.
Her eyes were closed, by her was a rose;
A girl of whom I could no more boast.
The snow was pelting, in the still of night;
The wind was roaring, whilst her soul took flight.
The thunder rumbling, the lightning sparkling –
Revealing her face placid, unwailing.
I could not leave her, and the night dragged on;
I heard my soul sighing – my love was gone.

Understanding Life
HTR Stevens Nov 2018
When we grow decrepit and old,
Good health is like a crown of gold.
Youth is young, nimble and bold;
Old age is weak, slow and cold.
Envy not the young when age brings our decline;
We’ve lived it if we live to be ninety-nine!
We have struggled to the top of the hill;
On neither side is the grass greener still.
Life is to be lived, not to look idly on;
Live and learn, school starts on the day we are born!
As we grow, we learn to laugh and play;
‘Tis as certain as night follows day.
When we fall, pick ourselves up again;
Should we stay down in eternal pain?
Winners don’t lose, losers don’t win;
‘Tis a shame both make such a din!
One day we’ll play against ourselves to win;
Will we then be banging on drums of tin?
When all are champions playing on the same side,
Will everyone be happy with equal pride?
When we at last improve all,
Then humankind can walk tall.
We’ll shine as stars in the sky,
Watching boulders drifting by.

Conundrum
HTR Stevens Nov 2018
My spirits are low –
My wits thus made slow,
My thoughts stormy as the monsoon,
Can’t be subdued ev’n by the moon
Which hangs in state up the cold sky –
Looks on earth, laughs and mocks my cry.

A truly calm moon!
Life is a buffoon;
Life is a jester that mocks man
Which man clings to as to a friend!
Great kings may frown at their jesters;
Yet, keep them to hide their slippers!

A man is so small –
Scarce a dot at all!
Yet, man carries in his small head
What cannot on this earth be laid.
It is life that laughs and mocks him;
Yet, mockery is man’s own whim!

Midnight Queen! Midnight Queen! How I grieve for thee.
Alas! That thou in thy garment white,
Should but show thy splendour for a night,
And then sink back into earth away from me!
Alas! Thy beauty once shown departs forever,
Tho’ it remains in the human mind,
As visions may eternally shine,
Thy sad departure remains also in mind!

This is life! This is life! A glimpse of splendour,
Like the fragrance of flowers blown away,
Life passes after a glorious day;
Life comes but once and then departs forever!

Ecstasy and Agony
HTR Stevens Oct 2018
We who have touched the heights of ecstasy,
See fantasies become reality,
Swimming out to sea as far as we dare,
Have to experience the depths of despair,
Living on the edge of a nightmare,
Not knowing what can be lurking there.

Such is our lot – the souls that climb the heights!
Shall we call it a blessing or a blight?
Living near the edge of insanity…
Joy is heaven – sorrow the bitter sea.
Between ecstasy and agony,
Our dreams become our reality.

How prettily the candle will dance,
In such a way your child to entrance!
How daintily his/her little hand will

Buy lanterns! Make the world gay with light:
Red light, green light, blue light – bright at night!

Simple Folks
HTR Stevens Sep 2018
When they see you and guy a-walking,
They call it courtship;
When they see you and a guy a-talking,
They pass knowing smiles and well-meaning quips.

When both of you are a-quarrelling,
They say that the rough must come with the smooth;
Before long, one is a-sorrowing –
Not for the row (as they think) but over a lost tooth.

And then both of you stop seeing each other,
They think it such an unpardonable crime;
All that time trying to bring you together…
‘Tis a shame the wedding bells are ne’er to chime.

Life
HTR Stevens Sep 2018
Life is lik’n to lightning;
Like the mist it does pass;
Oh! What is life – this thing
That can ne’er for long last?

See the clouds near heaven;
See the dewdrops – like glass
Life is shattered, broken;
Oh! Life does go by fast!

Life, like the rose, a flower,
Quickly withers and fades;
Dries as passeth each hour;
The soul to heav’n or hades.

See the flick'ring candle,
Watch it splutter and cough.
Life, o thou brief candle,
At old age do not scoff!

Yet, ere life dims away,
Ere our souls to God go,
Make the best of our day,
Make a friend of our foe.

Childhood Memories
HTR Stevens Sep 2018
I raced across from field to field,
Felt the wind sweeping past my face;
Feast’d my eyes on the golden yield:
On the padi dancing with grace.

A rain-drop rested on my palm,
A silver-drop from heavens high.
Nature’s cool freshness is a balm,
Rests the mind aft resting the eye.

I saw a youthful sunny face
Whose eyes were flushed with a soft light;
As at it I did gape and gaze,
The world grew dim, the face grew bright.

I shook my head, I blinked my eyes;
Across the face danced a soft glow.
It smiled and dimmed into the skies;
I looked everywhere high and low.

I saw it thrice, I lost it thrice;
I missed it a hundred times more.
It seemed to tease with gentle eyes,
And with parting smiles left me sore.

Her eyes bright and clear – with laughter supressed,
Tease the audience here – her smile does confess.

Though we may meet,
Now in the street,

But take each other for a stranger,
And look away all the while…

Is it not time we unite?

Sign of the Times?
HTR Stevens Aug 2018
They used to say “yes” or “no”
And you would know where to go.
Now life is complicated, they say they don’t know
Fearful of mistakes, everyone is vague and slow.
They just look up at the sky…(where the info “cloud” is?)
Not looking you in the eye.
Of most things everyone seems so unsure.
The answer to most questions is “e…er…e-er…”
If you can, you will look it up online:
However, there is no Sat-Nav or sign;
“Answers” pop up from every direction…
Follow your nose at your own discretion!
Interpret it at your own risk…
Everything is just hit and miss!
Hours later, forgetting what you are looking for –
Each person, his own expert (according to the law…),
You feel tired and completely drained,
Like a Dalek has sizzled your brain.
Your initial enthusiasm is gone and energy, too.
All you can whisper, weakly, are two meaningless words, “Boo…hoo…!”

Life is not a road that runs smooth and straight;

Life has many a wild and worthless dream;
Yet, how many a low thing we esteem!
Power and all fade with the breaking dawn;
And with them all bright prospects are withdrawn.
Farewell to thee, o sweet and fragrant flower;
Power and Beauty take leave at Death’s hour.
Howe’er great or grand to men thou may be,
When Death looms o’erhead, no man can save thee.

How cool and sweet the air I drank,

As I stroll’d the starlit bank,

She shew’d me petals for my bed,
A long grass for my easy-chair;
Mushrooms for umbrella or shade
Should rain pelt down from Anywhere.

She gave me May dew for my thirst,
Nectar sips to sweeten my lips;
She shew’d me jasmines, bloom’d and burst,
Whilst light-foot’d fairies round us tripp’d.

Not until I heard the church-bell
Strike with delight the morning hour,
Did I hear a thud as I fell
Off the red petals of a flower.

None was in sight when I came round;
A small red flower stood by my side.
Not a stir was heard, not a sound;
My Fairy Queen had gone to hide.

We can write words of gratitude on paper,
    Or to all the world her virtues make known,
    Or ev’n pour forth our love to her in measure,
    But, in vain, try to move her heart of stone…!

Here is a friend who taught us much we need to know:
Right from wrong and weak from strong,
                                                   Lit and English, too;
All this time she’s been working steadily tho’ slow –
She’s stol’n our hearts ‘ithout even attempting to woo!

…One day we will remember, tho’ some wish not to,
These days of pain and pleasure, we all have in school;
There are those you thank for every small thing they do
But how to thank her who made a person of you?

    We can write words of gratitude on paper,
    Or to all the world her virtues make known,
    Or ev’n pour forth our love to her in measure
    But,
        Oh…! Oh…! How to move her heart of stone?

May our sorrowful year with you remain in our memory
As a farewell serenade, a sad and tearful melody.

We think we can read her, but be very wary!
The human race is not so clever after all…
We just happen to have a lot of pride and gall!
Volcanic dust of glass, breathe it in; makes us bleed…

Thoughts-R-Us
HTR Stevens Jul 2018
A pen, like a poisoned dart,
Dipped in ink aimed at the heart;
Words well chosen from the start,
Is it science or is it art?

A play on words - twist and turn,
Take great care - like fire, can burn;
Tapping into the great Vine,
Your ether is also mine.

Everything, for good or ill,
Has been with us and is still;
Naught itself is good or bad,
But the intention we had.

We feel whatever we think...
Excess takes us to the brink;
Control our thoughts, we will feel
Hearts content, with minds of steel.

Minds and souls are closely linked...
Our hearts change when our minds blink.
Thro’ practice, our minds we train,
What we choose to lose or gain.

Little rituals, little thoughts...
Slowly we think we are gods!
If so, then Justice must rule
With Wisdom learnt not from school.
