Astronaut
Spenser Bennett May 2016
I've always wanted to be
An astronaut in the deep
Galactic sea where creation wrought
All that is exploding into naught

I know that this could
Not last the empty starlight wood
But I would hope you should ask
To bear the burden of a faceless mask

We could become wild-human-angels
Answering the unending questions
Soul-star-astronauts
But we're not

Leave the grass and the leaves to dust
In search of intergalactic rust
Sink into the ink of darkness perched
Awake from death, supernova rebirthed

All power to the grace of the distant
All glory to the face of singular instant
Bear the weight of tomorrow
Become the force removing sorrow

We could become wild-human-angels
Answering the unending questions
Soul-star-astronauts
But we're not

Such a quiet desperation
Such a dying fascination

All Roads Lead to the Sky
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
There's an impossibility standing adjacent to the nearest star bound body
It waves and beckons with a sincere familiarity so unnaturally
I am the end of the undulating tunneled vision
I am become a silhouette of a dead city caught in the decaying story bones fiction

We are all emptiness and our emptiness is how we define ourselves.
But our emptiness will become a river into which we will find the world to be held.
The universe exists in the eyes of those who live without the sight to see
Those breathing, freezing stars that burn into the heart buried deep.

Constructs of will and portions of strength cut out the guilt of my youth
All roads lead to the sky but I will not seek to understand you
Futures are made in blinks and beats
Are they aware of the way we lay with our tangled feet under these threadbare sheets?

Follow the light of my darkness
A single shot of whiskey and a conversation whisks away my heart's hardness
All cool and breezy across the great green oceans
I'll meet you halfway between loss and a facsimile of dreamed emotions

Lonely Bird
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
Does the lonely bird still sing?
Do his feathers still greet the Spring?

Is there a sadness in his song?
When the full forest sounds wrong?

Unsure if abandoned by hope
Or lost in the fetid smoke.

His voice a broken pitiful thing.
A lonely bird cannot sing.

And if he musters a "Po-tee-weet"
No other birds may he greet.

Will ever a time come to pass
When the lonely bird sings at last?

To be the Anchor
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
I have expanded through one million dimensions and still I remain flat.
Paper walls surrender my paper heart to the words that erase themselves with age.

If there is meaning I find it meaningless unless you got it right in one guess.
Can you feel blood in my lost chest as it circulates? Maybe that's a mistake.

Do dead men tell no tales or maybe they spin them lacking air to rattle through ragged dead lungs still pink yet misunderstood? Dust that settles behind twinkling stars lets me down above this silent neighborhood.

I think we all grow up to be pirates, Y'know the kind that the Pan hates?
Betraying our childhood dreams and aspirations for backgreens and exasperations.

If this ship is sinking I want to be the anchor, watch it all crash down in slow motion, while it buries me at the bottom of your endless ocean.
Tick, tick, tick. The clock have ceased their tocks.

Cover to cover I think I have found another darling. Can this tale continue to spin while the world above changes page by page?
Exploring stories that stand up to the test of time. Peter Pan has always been a fascinating idea to me. Thank you for reading!

Real Serenity
Spenser Bennett Apr 2016
Maybe life will be everything I thought it was.
Maybe this ain't the escape I dreamt of once.
I need to slow down, maybe say, "pause".
Take the reins, pull over these lost thoughts.

It gets better. It gets better.
I wear my mood like the weather.
It gets better.
Right now, Fall is my favorite sweater.
Bright orange reminds of the day I first met her.

True colors finally show just before the snow
Shoulders shrug before they get cold
I should've known.
I wore my coat to postpone fresh grown sorrow. I should've known.

And I'm thinking back to Summer's plenty
Forgetting the day she left me
And the way it blessed me
Now I'm drunk with my feet up, breathing in real serenity.

Today Was a Car Crash
Spenser Bennett Nov 2016
Today was a car crash
Tomorrow's a few weeks away
Next month I'll see you someday
But today was a car crash
And it broke more than your bones
And it broke more than my heart
It broke everything
From the headlights
To the end of time
Nothing was the same
But you'll never change
But today was a car crash
Tomorrow's a few weeks ago
And yesterday was an eternity
But I didn't know it then
I'll live just a few moments
Without you for a second
But that second had better be a lifetime
And it had better flash before my eyes
Like the tears, like your face, like the casket, and the darkness
Tomorrow's a few weeks away
And forever came and passed
Because today was a car crash

Your Ocean, My Graveyard
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
All that you are not
All those scars you've got
Will lead you to the end
Where I've been watching the world sleep again

Breathe it in
Forget our sin
Forget our spoken names
We journey to that sacred place

I've always been lost
A silhouette of hopeless indifference
I've always been lost
A burning darkness in the distance

You are a silver dream of mine
My only reason that seems to bind
Your golden grace bestowed on me
Leads me to a sudden peace

Awash in starry ocean waves
We've chosen our graves
Death is awaiting a single thread
A pale golden hair from atop your head

Breathe it in
Forget our sin
Forget our spoken names
We journey to that sacred place

I've always been lost
A silhouette of hopeless indifference
I've always been lost
A burning darkness in the distance

I've always been lost
A silhouette of hopeless indifference
I've always been lost
A burning darkness in the distance
Spenser Bennett May 2016
In false light reflected we stare deeply into eyes the same.
Searching for Truth and finding ourselves shimmering cold over the still lake alone unflinching in the weight of eternity and her majestic indifference; blink.
A madness of heaven reaching through the water below to stir the silent sleeper of your soul, come forth from your depths and breathe the silk air you once knew.
All is glistening in the not so distant morning where the sun roars ancient and abysmal.
Where once Truth sighed heavy into shadow she will once more open like the lily seeking her sky born love.
Despair fades from eyes now clear blue like the sky and the rain washes away anger like dust from your kissed skin.
We blossom into light petals of ultra green and hyper white and dance as the joyous breeze allows.
Soon the darkness must fall again and we shall curl away to forgive the fallacious star that drowns out so many more.
False light will search us for the desperate Truth we hide.
A waking dream that danced on the edge of my eyes into the bright warmth of the sun.

Did Destiny Manifest
Spenser Bennett Jul 2016
Ring Freedom like cold metal
Around my wrists.
Jewels of the white, red, and blue
Sparkle in the lights
Beneath our impossible stars and stripes.

Paint my prison bars
In the blood of your sacred
Innocence.
Did Destiny manifest itself in your heart?
Did she blind you to the suffering of those who walked before?

Lady Liberty bring me peace.
Adrift in this American ocean; red and thick. It tastes of iron. It smells of blood.
Do you see those bony broken backs that have built you?
Do you dare look them in the eye?

How are we to believe those lofty words
hoisted upon our souls?
Life, Liberty, Happiness, Equality
Were surely written with pure intent.
Have we enslaved the poor, the broken, the citizens of our own continent?

Speak like you know how to scream.
Speak like you ache to be free.
Just speak.
We will not be led by blind indifference.
Love will seize our hearts and make them whole.
Speak. Speak. Speak words of hope.
For what fear do we have of the rope?

E Plurbus Unum holds our lives for ransom.
Burn down this shamed house of greed.
See the light of a nation freed.
Hear those bells ring out aginst the silent auction of captivity like the hearts of We the People.

The Taste of Rust
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
The taste of rust hangs
Heavy in my mouth
A copper color stains
My crooked teeth

I am awake now
Unlike how I used to be
Though my eyes were open
I was surely dreaming

The taste of rust hangs
Tangy on your lips
Blue twinges decorate
Your iced expression

Bound with veins
Of hope and smoke
We lie side by endless side
Entwined lost to the madness

Now the taste of rust hangs
Growing older still
Let me restore the flame
To the fire in your soul

For Me Weep Not
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
The soles of my shoes are
nothing
more than skin and bone.
The holes in my heart are filled with
Something
More than blood alone

Time is measured on a hundred million
Watches
Each in synchronous space
Rights are driven forward by a hundred million
Marches
Anger painted our faces
Love is given over to the lion
Harmless
Like lambs in guarded places

I am leaving for days gone by
Priceless
Time we shared
You are leaving for nights alive
Lifeless
Days our hearts bare
We are parting for a time
Fight this
For the end is near

This end is merely beginning
Again
Find hope in loss
This beginning is merely an ending
My friend
For me weep not
I'll be here waiting for you in time
The end
Is not the end of us.

The Truth of Ignorance
Spenser Bennett Apr 2016
It's been said that ignorance is bliss
But I think that phrase took a swing and missed.
Cuz I look around and all the ignorance I see and hear
Seems to stem directly from fear.

Fear of knowledge, change, and what may come next
From both sides of the aisle, right and left

Mother help us we walk along in confusion
Pointing fingers, spewing hate filled abuse and
Forgetting to speak of love for fear of rejection
Father help us we ask your protection

There's more to learn if only we allow it
We should listen to more than just those who shout the loudest

Even jesters garner much attention
And are showered with affection
But their ideas are farcical and dilute
If one but tried they are simple to dispute

Die not with fear in your heart
Remember courage requires fear to start
To defeat our burgeoning ignorance
We must supplant our living indifference

Within the flower exists peace
Within our hours seek the heat
These bricks will crumble
Those words will tumble
Like water in the falls
Lonely wolf calls
I'm so tired of being alone
You've been gone for far too long
Honey, come home

All this time I've been waiting
These days, so lonesome with wasting
The flash of you that illuminates the room
My darkness will be broken soon

Fearless and free, the day you left me
A single petal sat, cool and settled
Fearless and free, the day you left me
Roots dug in deep, heart propelling your wings to beat

Inverse temples reside in my heaving chest
Distorted order rises from your best
Call to arms those little wonders
Let 'em teach us how to thunder
Another rewrite. Pay no mind.

Nothing Beautiful May Stay
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
And that man swung like
the tire we rode into the
golden sunset of my youth
a stranger to beauty

I can still hear them
Calling out an empty name
Once you're gone do
you keep your truth

In quiet moments of
Crystal reflection
I often wonder if
I could be him

A soul so lost
Forgone the waiting
Choose my last and
Step away into nothing

But I remember
Those empty smiling eyes
That shrill wailing proves
Nothing beautiful may stay

Strength enough to carry away pain and suffering from my weary eyes
Speak grace into the canvas of my silent heart

Sparks soar higher than the thunder head eagles play

Swing Life Away
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
Splash through the puddle underneath that golden expanse
Our tea cup synchronicity belies our swimming decadence

Ride waves taught by the playful mantaray
Cruise through the ocean sky to the city of the Bay
Like a babe I crawl on the edge of the plane

We're all refugees on this backwater bathwater ocean
We look around and to our elders to make sense of the scaled schools motion
The gray herd moves as the vacuum looms over green Picasso notions

As travellers across great highways we can reach those distant cosmic creations
A speedboat horse race were confident we can win

Ski down pillowcases  of fresh powdered imagination
Great green looming through the dark starlight illumination
Barrel rolled into the canvas ink of knowledge on the mountain

We pay attention to the cashier of time
So we can swing life away as the world floats by

Three Sugars, No Cream
Spenser Bennett May 2016
Three sugars. No cream.
Stuck inside a 4 A.M. Dream
And there's nothing I can't do
Is the sky really black or just dark blue?

No cars, no souls save preying police
Their lights burn red and scream, "Freeze!"
And the night obliges
For it is not so mighty

Glass half full, still starving
Clouds overmind work their sky carving
Of all my favorite fluffy animals
Are vampires iron deficient cannibals?

The sun soon breaks like an egg on the edge
And the dream skitters light spiders from my head
Eyes pressed to withered pillow sheathing
Is this morning or deeper evening?

Am I waking from the dreaming
Or am I sleeping next to coffee steaming?

My hands
Brought to ruin
Wasteland
Burnt to death by fruition
When every song will grind our souls
We will live to break our bones
In service of the name we cannot speak
Our life, our death an endless melody on repeat
Should I breathe or just give in?
Should I love or die my friend?
Love to death, breath to surrender
I, begin

To see the nature of all these monstrosities
Bound inside my hidden anxieties
But nothing helps when the sun still sets
On empty halls in houses not yet meant
To shelter the weak from the coming storm
To shelter us from the pulpit, mourn
Our insufficient gesture of goodwill
In the darkness we suffer soft and still
Should I breathe or should I just give in?
Should I love or die my friend?
Love to death,
breath to surrender
Decompose the sound of silence,
return to sender
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
He laid emeralds in her eyes
But I'd already tried
A bracelet made of gold
And a scarlet thread around her wrist
And everything was wrong
So we sang sentimental songs
Oh, how seldom we belong
But how elegant our kiss
And we painted crooked lines
But we danced in perfect time
To a love so much refined
We know not what it is
So like the dullen wine
We pour into a grief we'd known before
But never quite like this
Never quite like this
All I know now is regret
She follows like a silhouette
Of a cobblestone behind me
She has nothing left to say
Except to innocently ask
Her voice delicate as glass
"Do you see me when we pass?"
But I
I continue on my way
From Memphis Will be Laid to Waste by the Metalcore band Norma Jean

Great Entertainment
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
"I am what I believe"
Cried the crestfallen philosophy
"You are what we tell you to be"
Stated the looming bureaucracy
"But what of free speech, life, and liberty?"
Asked the outraged citizenry
"All fictitious. Now back to Benghazi."

And the world turned on
While our minds turned off
Victims to the Great Entertainment
That silences our voice of dissent

"What a marvelous movie"
"It could have been better"
"That Trump is a no-bullshitter"
"Yeah but he's  the same color as my melted smoothie"

Meanwhile the old wait to die
And prisoners don't have the hope to riot
And the T.V. tells us about Kim's new hair
I see these things and I despair

"Hey man, lemme get a eighth"
"Man, what the ******* gotta celebrate"
"I just got fired on Saturday, tryin' to forget this place"
"Man, you just gotta have a little faith"

But ain't no God in heaven and no savior in the saints
One prayer and all will be forgiven at least that's what they say
But my eyes don't divine a reason to believe 'em
My words are my crimes and I won't deceive 'em

Step back and give your heart your full attention
Listen to the voices of the ones I forgot to mention
Are we really so different
Are we slipping into indifference

If you believe in humanity
If you believe in nature
If you believe in morality
Maybe you'll become someone's savior

And my homies roll up to Eastside
And I tried to go nuts
Now I gotta run hide
'Cuz bacon munch next door on their donuts
Call me crazen, brazen, but
I was cravin' me a donut
So I strolled up
And then she showed up
Tryna get some tacos
And she was with her ****-o
Head look like a rock-o
And he knows bout them rocks though
So I zip-zap-skidaddle
Back to the Eastside
Now the bar died
So I try to find a quick ride
Down to mi casa
But the cars they passa
Without no second glance - uh
Until I drive myself - uh
Now I'm in a jail cell
Callin' for a lawyuh
Writing out my woes nuh
Hiding from my phone bruh
Cigarettes at home
And my heads all full of fog

On my second day of dying I met the moon. She, like me, was quite morose. Full of darkness her gloom seemed to mirror my doom.

On my third day of dying I met the earth. A babbling brook and mountainous mirth. She spoke of living and of the renewal of spring, her birth. She kept me warm in her hearth.

On my last day of dying I met you. A beautiful soul, bright and true. I heard you laugh and sing to the deep blue. Ice for eyes and fire for heart you carried me through.

Subtlety belies perfection

Burns Too Bright
Spenser Bennett May 2016
In all my mourning glad smiles and little intricate sadness I find my sapphires once embedded too deep to see under the shimmering façade of worldly ugliness.

And the crafts they go down so smooth and the world slides into the inky night with twinkle lights dancing behind and before my so lonely eyes.

Those foolish stars sing ghoulish hymns of forgiveness through the empty air.
And we ourselves are empty but so convinced in our self aggrandizing thoughts of our sufficiency that we ignore their soft whispering voices.

How could we be empty when we tell ourselves that our hearts our souls our thoughts are the only real things we know? But it's all empty.
You and me and everything in between.

It's all flickering twinkle lights that fade before the sun burns too bright.

Once I was part of the race
Now I feel out of place
It seems this community
Has forgotten me

I want to laugh and shout
While I stay inside looking out
But I'll sit in silence
And watch from my self inflicted island

A God Shaped Vacancy
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
Born with a vacant sea
Raging within me
And a god shaped vacancy
Buried deep

Echo in the Valley
Resounding with the breeze
Narcissus drowned for free
Can you hear that broken heart beat?

Is this an all consuming darkness?
Is this emptiness blooming in death regardless?

The waves wash away sound
Sand castles crack for crowns
I cannot be let down
By a god who doesn't come around

Hades loves the Beauty bound
Fiery king of all that glitters below the ground
Subdued Persephone weeps for Olympus' Mount
Can you hear her dead voice shout?

Is this an all consuming darkness?
Is this emptiness blooming in death regardless?

I am the ocean
You are a hurricane in motion
Hollow heart within is closing
Filled with Love, the goddess I've chosen

Street
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
Every heartbeat is an endless defeat
A ribcage jukebox stuck on repeat
Slow on sleep and heavy in high heat
Fever pleads to end the beat
Suffer a sudden death alone in the street

Dearly Departed
Spenser Bennett May 2016
Pardon me, I miss you dear
Dearly departed

All is lost, no life worth the cost
Rest undisturbed, sweet Brothers and Sisters

Pardon me, I miss you dear
Dearly departed

And they still stand, though in death fallen
And that green grass, shadows life or what they called it

Those white crosses,
All that remains of our best losses

'Til Valhalla or Heaven's view
I'll be waiting, waiting for you

Please pardon me, I miss you dear
Dearly departed
Spenser Bennett Mar 2017
Your eyes pour white smoke from the fire that burns your throat.
I'll swallow my tongue singing the songs that you wrote. Cover my mouth. Watch me choke.
Employ cause and effect once we've perfected the affect and pause.

Take it back to the twisted root
The silver spilled by the traitor's truth
Swing now and silence the doubt
There's fire in my eyes that will never burn out.

I can't become just another dead bulb, flickering fast to that final "pop" of my life.
I need to be a steady star, burn forever, forever and always be someone's wishing light.

Paint it black like the empty space
Above the clouds, behind what waits
Pointillism in still water reflected low
What heaven we have yet to know

Oh, we're all burning. Burn me up inside.
I will be the sun crashing through the dawn, I'll burn out bright.
End this endless life, bring on forever night.

Burn Down Red
Spenser Bennett Aug 2016
I want my eyes to explode
And the colors to wash
The sky in pure gold
And burn down red
Ruby seas
Like you
Died
So
Peaceful
Yet warring
Like twin starlings
Fighting for the love
Of all of existence
Turning forever, always
Spenser Bennett Jan 2017
Sweep clean the system
Shards of glass and bullets bloom
Party's over, no survivors
Shredded red ties and silk pant suits
Will we cower in glass houses
Stained panes fell through these rooms
War bloomed in the fresh-flowered noon

Don't believe what you see
Truth hides in deceit
Patron saint of finest filigree
What is gold but an excuse for filling blood seas

Chop shop, our listless hearts
Power brokers in bulletproof cars
Build your walls, we'll take your streets
The first house to burn is the house of greed
Thankfully you sold your souls for gasoline

If this is the end of everything
I'll make sure it's beautiful and free
Like fire off the edge of an endless sea
And you'll be the first to confess to fake history

Sun Breaks Secrets
Spenser Bennett Apr 2016
My secrets become the Earth
As my bones become the burning dirt
And your lungs ceased to hurt
In death Love found bruised rebirth

We fell parallel to the sky
Our bodies awash in time
Gravity lost hold
The sun breaks over

My secrets sank in the bleeding ocean
Like my fingers sank in your skin
Now you can breath free again
In love Death found sweet emotion

We fell parallel to the sky
Our bodies awash in time
Gravity lost hold
The sun breaks

My secrets came to blistering light
Long after I left this frightful life
And you, Love, could not cry
In light Love and Death came alive

Body
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
This is the body.
Shoddy and full of shame and ****.
Bones held up by stubborn woes.
Foes held down by simple stones.
Bear with me.
See yourself there.
Pile of bones and emeralds for eyes.
Skies of wonder, lips curled in a perfect smile.
This is the body.
Shoddy yet full of grace and bliss.
