Take Me for what I Am Or…
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
You think of me in terms of you.
My normal doesn’t satisfy.
It doesn’t matter what I say;
you only see me in your way.

The news is good but you see bad.
I’ve had it up to here with that.
You fear the worst; I see the best.
You’re really an obsessive mess.

I’m standing here as plain as day,
wanting you to see the facts.
Wanting you to just let go
of broken notions you still hold.

Here I am, just take a look.
Read the book I’ve given you.
The things you took away from me,
I want them back; why can’t you see?

Truth means very much more to me
Than what you give me credit for.
I’m worth a chance, please give me that
Or stand aside to play your games.

Pick on someone else’s brother.
Choose another to twist and turn.
Let me live my life today
Or get the hell out of my way!
Power corrupts...
Having one of those days...
He drew a line in the sand and I'm about to cross it.
Just had to get this out first.

Valley of Dreams
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
Sleepy feelings erupted on the landscape in her mind. Volcanoes jutted up across wild fields of endless rhyme. Visions from the clouds rained down to fill the empty streams. The lava steamed with fury as her heart began to dream.

The streams turned into rivers and then they overflowed. Passing memories drifted through the valleys of her soul. Trees of truth grew in those valleys, just outside her door. A million leaves were scattered deep across her bedroom floor.

She was resting there on pillows of moss, lightly tossed to urge the scent. Windows open, the breeze came in and tickled her until she laughed. A fish walked through the open door and spoke to her of things to come. Running through sweet fields of clover, she met her dreams yet to be spun.

Down in the valley she danced to the rhythm of another moonlit night. Waltzing through the land of lyrics, she teased the streams with pure delight. Wandering through the lava fields with flowers growing in her hair, she tiptoed through the evening air, picking dreams once planted there.

Across the valley, the rains subside. The rivers wane and the starlight hides. A misty glow comes to steal the night. Sunlight rises as her dreams take flight.

Lake of Dreams
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
I poured my dreams into a lake
And watched them slowly dissipate
Those tender drops dissolved in waves
Rolling through the thoughts I’ve saved

Drenched in sunlight, dancing there
Those dreams evolved into a mist
Lifting up, it kissed the sky
Spinning rainbows for my eyes

Butterflies in brilliant light
What a sight as dreams take flight
Whatever comes, whatever goes
The ripples in the lake still flow

New thoughts reach back, deep down inside
As wonder drifts up from the waves
The lake returns so many dreams
Her wispy visions come to me

I let the dreams flow over me
The lake has now become a sea
I’m all absorbed in its salty spray
There many cares are washed away

Rainbow
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
Sifting through the clouds…
Searching for a rainbow.
I finally found one floating there,
Just outside my window.

Her colors flowing through the air,
Almost caught me unaware.
But there I stood in the silky mist,
Kissed by the sunlight’s fractured bliss.

Now I’m finding rainbows
Everywhere I turn.
Just waiting for another rain
To splash across my window pane.

I watch the clouds embrace the sky
With every storm that passes by.
But in my mind I always see
A rainbow watching over me.

Are We Free?
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
A kid can flee so easily
Running out the open door.
They’ll climb a tree and find a world
So different than before.

Some dig a hole and pile up snow
To make themselves a fort
Or take their leave across the fields;
A different kind of sport.

Crawling through the hayfields,
Picking berries in the grass.
Celebrating little streams;
Watching them flow past.

Cats and dogs and little frogs
Birds and squirrels and ponies
Draped in mirth and soiled with dirt
The earth is not so lonely

Stepping through the stony fields
Hoping that first kiss will last
Playing past the summer glow
The days flow by, it starts to snow

Suddenly a memory grows
It grows into a dream
Moving on into the haze
Entranced we fail to count the days

It’s just a game we have to play
The rhythm of the years descend
Pretending all the dreams are real
We pass our time inside the wheel

Then at last, in the light of day
We look around and feel the sound
Of the trumpets blaring in our ears
Gently teasing all our fears

We deny the facts but that won’t last
Stemming tears we’ve gathered here
Passing time inside our minds
Believing things we cannot find

So clouds drift by, time ticks away
The games we played are getting older
From little kids just playing soldier
The world now sits upon our shoulders
This is an excerpt from the book I'm working on from the part delving into my childhood and the act of growing up.

Spinning Starlight (Tanka)
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
Deep inside these dreams
Where your magic fills the air
Peering through the night
I’m watching you spin starlight
Into visions of delight
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
You always said “I’ll love you always.”
But always didn’t last.
Your memories are a bulldozer
Just plowing through my past.

We stripped away the barren soil
And got down to the lode.
It wasn’t what we thought was there
There wasn’t any gold.

Now the ground lays cold and bare.
There’s nothing left of us to share.
We’ve divvied up what’s left of us
And left the ground to turn to dust.

We wanted gold
To free our souls and wash away the tears
But the gears of time kept grinding on
Churning up the years.

So I hold the gems we found back then
Closely to my beating chest
To recollect, to not forget.
**At least for you, I’ll do my best.

Weaving Feelings
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
On a windswept plain in a quiet place,
Beneath the stars in the moonlight’s glow,
Memories drift on the rising tide
As feelings flow through the seams of time.

Bound together they whirl and spin,
Weaving threads into fleeting glimpses.
These little thoughts are born to feel.
The meal’s been ground on the miller’s wheel.

A misty vision settles in.
It grows into a mighty swell.
Rolling over the present tense,
It leaves the heart with no defense.

No fence can bind this fertile field.
Its earthy yield is what we feel
But wrapped around on the spinning wheel
We’ll twist and turn ‘till those feelings heal.

Morning Rain
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
In the morning rain
There’s a feeling that grows,
Softly dripping,
Gently slipping
Into a dream.

It’s another day as
Thoughts gently sway.
Walking with memories
In this drizzling mist
Is hard to resist.

Across the meadow
A whippoorwill sings.
Down in the valley,
The echoes resound
With a joyous sound.

Ideas flow out but
Nothing comes easy.
The fabric is old
But a story unfolds
As the tapestry grows.

Woven with care,
This gentle refrain
Settles the soul and
Fills up the mind
With meanings.

Leaving behind
The mirage of time,
A rhythm explodes
Into mighty songs
Of healing.

Fashioned by fate
The music flows,
The flowers grow
And the raindrops know
It’s time to sow those tender feelings.
OK, I just noticed that this is the 400th poem I've posted on HP. A milestone I guess. My how times flies when you're having fun. ;)

Your Show (Choka)
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
Take me to your show
I really want to know you
Deep down in your soul
Where the flowers bloom and grow

Show me all your dreams
Let your mysteries unfold
Take me far away
Through the sunshine of your day

Sing your song for me
Let the melody run free
Dance here in the breeze
Where the leaves of time recede

Let your feelings loose.
May your river run so deep.
Let your laughter fly
‘till the sky begins to weep.

Whisper your desires
In the temple of my ears
Let me just absorb
All your feelings and your fears

Pray with me today
May more flowers bloom for you
Share with me your mind
As the world slowly unwinds

Spend another day
Spinning tales into the rain
Let your pain dissolve away
In the daylight that remains

The grace in my day.

You’re just searching for moonbeams
To light up my way.

You can dance me in circles

Burn This Book!
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
It’s a terrible book. So hard to read.
Is it really such trash? Then make it ash.
No need to act like you like it so.
I know you’re burning just to let it go.

There’s no real sage between these pages.
Mental gyrations never tend to engage you.
I caught you smiling but was that so real?
I can’t really say but I know how you feel.

So now that the ink has stained your brain.
The paper cuts, they made you insane.
Now that the words are a big fat mush.
You can hush right up and light it up.

It takes a spark just to end this lark,
A little swish from the candle stick.
A puff of smoke and this joke is toast.
There’ll be nothing left of these words I wrote.

Reason will fade in the swirling flame.
Thoughts will get lost in the blurry haze.
If your mind’s made up then what’s to say?
I named it that way, so just do it OK.

Don’t let these words tend to lead you astray.
Settle on down and have it your way.
The bridges you burn are made of straw.
Burning a book’s not against the law.

Unless you do it in a public place.
Then, of course, you’ll have an egg on your face.
You can burn the words if you think it’s alright and
Flicker away in its glowing light.

Here’s the secret to your growing angst.
A simple solution to your mental trance.
Your mind’s made up so don’t get sick.
Just flick your Bic and get done with it.
This is a nod to Abbey Hoffman and his book titled "Steal this Book." I haven't read it (or stolen it) but the title is intriguing by itself.

This Song
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
I love this song on the radio.
But why do I feel so bad?
The tune it makes me very happy
But then again, so sad.

Here in the car, the speakers pour
That melody in my ears.
The song is sweet, I love the beat
But what’s with all these tears?

We listened there from the very front row.
It made you happy just to watch the show.
I was all entranced as your eyes romanced
The minstrel on the stage.

You were very pleased and that pleased me.
I simply loved to see you happy.
The music still rings round my brain
And takes me back to better days.

The song’s still neat but now you’re gone.
I’m in this seat just driving on.
The tune evolves into a smile
So I turn it up and sing awhile.

Wondering dreams dancing there
I see them and dare
To get lost in your vision
Your beautiful stare

Our love waltzes the moonlight
Your music flows free
We’re so wrapped up in magic

In the song that we're singing

The stars are aware
Of the dreams we are making
The dreams we believe
They're revealing the sunshine

Leaving the darkness
As we walk through the garden
We're skipping through time
As another dream rises

Infinity
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
A blank page tries to stare me down.
Devoid of words, the empty space
Surrounds my mind and
Fills it up with little thoughts.

Forget-me-nots, that’s what they are.
Just IOUs awaiting payment.
A keen arrangement with the empty sheet.
How sweet it is and very neat.

A thought takes shape, the space is bare.
But ink conveys a tender kiss.
Sprawling there my words resist
The emptiness I cannot bear.

That lonely space is now set free.
The story flows and grows…
Into a mighty tree where
Thoughts to be are simply leaves.

I climb that tree so all can see
And leave behind a memory.
Across the page, no longer bare,
I stare into infinity.
Back to writing about writing.

I Still Miss You
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
I was used to you.
Each day was new.
Each time we played,
We played a different game.

Drifting through
The murky haze,
We’d think it through
And then we’d do.

I’m lost without your pleasant gaze.
Traveling down the roads we paved.
My soul was yours, the one you saved.
Our dreams they lived from day to day.

One day you left, it’s hard to say.
The bus came by and wrecked our day.
I miss you more as time goes by.
I often stop to wonder why.

That lasting kiss you left me with
Is all I taste, it’s all I feel.
The harmony you brought to me,
It filled the well inside my dreams.

My dearest one, I still see you,
Laughing, happy, loving me.
My heart is torn beyond compare.
These shoes are worn but I still care.

I can’t forget the plans we made.
Each day I live to honor thee.
The raging sea can’t quell our dreams.
The love we shared still sets me free.
For Jen. My love for you will never die.
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
When I see you there in the brisk, fresh air
I’m watching you without a care.

To be with you is all I need.
Just little seeds of thoughts I’ve dreamed.

To walk with you down the garden path.
To breathe with you is all I ask.

I have so very much more to give.
Inside your mind, I want to live.

Into your eyes, I love to look.
Your heart is such an open book.

Your feelings they reach out to me.
They teach me thoughts I’d never see.

I do believe I’m mesmerized.
My mind is floating across your sky.

The clouds drift by, your light shines through.
I’m loving you with all I do.

Please let me stay another day.
Let the passing years take us away.

Let me dream with you
Till the creek runs dry

And sleep with you
In the bye and bye.
This was commissioned as a poem to accompany a marriage proposal. For some reason it came easier than other commissions. I guess I just like writing about love.

Little Ripples
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
Rolling waves, little vibes.
Subtle words locked deep inside.
Relax…step back...and ride the tide.
Seek to find what’s locked inside.

Little ripples flowing in a rolling sea,
Gently washing all over me.
Watching you as you pass the time.
Reaching out to make the climb.

We’re celebrating new-found worlds.
Choosing words as yet unheard.
Building mansions in the sky.
Dreaming…believing…asking why.

The tales you tell,
They rise and fly.
Wisps of clouds…wet and dreamy…
Floating by.

I love you more than time can say.
Beyond the mountains, we must stray.
Dwelling here inside your waves,
Our love evolves in special ways

Tempting fate…
Our ripples flow.
Tossing stones into the hole.
The echoes ring throughout my brain.
Your rain pours down, removing pain.

In hues of blue,
It seems to me a pleasant scene.
That timeless dream you paint for me
Is sprawling here for all to see.

I’m all absorbed,
Never bored with what you say.
I love the way you look at me,
Just how your eyes divine on me.

The world is tossed, our love is bound.
Rumbling over this hallowed ground.
All we’ve shared and all we’ve seen
Is what we’ve found and can believe.

The trees have seen our blooming dreams.
Nothing means so much to me.
Except…
That warming fire inside your eyes.

To my surprise, it’s no surprise.
Your flame, it warms my pulsing stream.
The heat that’s raging in my soul
Is whole with you, your role is true.

The only moment we can ever spend
Must last for now…and now…and now.
Please remember that you please me so.
Just grow with me as the river flows.
As with the previous poem. This was written in the hospital.

Recovery (for Sharlin)
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
Down, deep down inside...
Down inside where the memories hide.
Where the meanings mean so very much more.
Beyond a time we can’t ignore.

Down where the dragons hunt and crawl.
Lost in the maze…falling, falling.
Against the wall…clawing, clawing.

###########################

Up, pushing up…
Out, reaching out…
In, letting in…flying, trying.
Living, dying, laughing, crying.
Across the wind…singing, smiling.

Down below where the meanings flow,
We see a light in the cold, dark night.
Reading leaves in our hot, dark tea.
Believing things we just can’t believe.

Sailing far across the sea.
We grieve for loves we’ve never seen.
Our minds are wrapped in the waves of time.
What once was lost is ours to find.

###########################

I thank you now for this little dance.
A lovely chance to see the light.
You mean so very much to me.
I’ve reached you here inside my dreams.

From deep inside these shadowed halls,
We’ve finally reached beyond the walls.
Above the sky, deep down inside,
Like birds we fly, escaping time.
I was on a seven day stint in the hospital and Sharlin was one of my tender caregivers. I asked her if she’d like to hear a poem. She said yes but insisted that I write one just for her. The topic she chose was “success after failure.” Of course I obliged. This is the result. I loved the challenge and she was thrilled with the result.

Candle (re-write)
Richard Grahn Sep 2017
Burning in the night
A candle waves about.
Puffs of smoke rise up.
The space glows—flickering.

A soothing warmth cuts the darkened space.
She sets to pen and paper then dreams.
Recording her thoughts and soulful musings,
Light flows out across the page.

Here, where time has lost its meaning,
The wick is burning and the wax is melting.
The glow is soothing and her words are moving.
A story grows in the throes of her feelings.
I've been doing some significant editing and re-writing preceding the publication of a book. This poem took on quite a few new turns so I decided to re-post it.

Drip…

Drip…

Drip…

Splash…

A bubbling brook?

No…

It’s a raging sea washing over me.

Have I gone mad?
Yes, raging mad…but

I never felt so very happy.
Never felt I could feel so free.

Now is beautiful. The future is beautiful.
The past is gone but I’m still me.

I’m not a flea, just a speck of dust.
Just let me be and we shall see.

The world, the city, the house, the car,
The universe so near yet far.

How can I be so truly blessed?
What have I done to deserve this test?

I’m drowning here in the deep blue sea.
Happiness envelopes me.

It fills the void down deep inside.
Expanding vistas, once passed by.

Spilling waves across the page,
Can’t hold them back, they roll away.

Memories fly and I can’t decide.
Back inside, I cannot hide.

The current flows all over me
I’m happier now than I should ever be.

Drowning here in a sea of glee,
I’m taking chances merrily, so…

I’ll laugh till I cry as the tide rips by.
Fleeting moments never last this long.

I'll keep on swimming till the daylight’s gone.
Passing the hours with this joyful song.
