Remember
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
Please remember what you mean to me.
Remember with your heart and
Remember with your soul.

Let passion evoke the memories we’ve made
While our thoughts drift together
Through the realm of our dreams.

Remember that vision we’ve shared for so long.
The world may be turning but it can’t drag us down.
Let’s walk here together through the landscape of life,
Charting our pathway through fields of delight.

Remember the hills and the valleys we’ve roamed,
The rivers we’ve forded and the roads we have strolled.
Believe in this journey we’re taking through time.
Let love be our tether and a light in your eyes.
This piece was commissioned. There's nothing quite like getting paid for doing something you love.

My Pen
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
I’ve lost it again,
My one working pen.
But then,
Things should be simpler
Than that.

I need a piece of paper too.
I’m so lost without it.
This simply won’t do.

My mind is racing.
The words are escaping.
Like a fleeting rainbow
They’re drifting away.

Got to sit down
At this old computer
And type them all up
Before they can stray.

The world keeps on churning
Assaulting my brain.
The words tumble out
And onto the stage.

I do miss my pen.
We were the best of friends.
Nothing could get in our way.

Times may have changed
But he phrases remain.
I’ll say it again
I still miss my pen

I hope he’s OK
In the very best way.
We had so much fun
There out on the page.

But the thoughts keep on coming
The computer is humming.
The words bubble out
So I tuck them away.

I’ll say a goodbye
For the time that remains.
Destined to fight
For the words that I write.

Melody (Choka)
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
Starlight is fading
As you surrender your dreams
To warm sun rising
O’er the landscape you're flying

Locked deep in your mind
In the breadth of each moment
Time drifts slowly by...

Here in the sunlight…streaming
Memories are fleeting
But the world is breathing

Your vibrant rainbow
Tosses many reflections
Gleaming in sunlight
Your deep vision remembers

As heaven descends
In the still of the morning
Dancing with daylight
The whole world is unfolding
A melody is growing

Fool
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
In a laden sky, clouds are passing me by.
Wrapped up in passion, daylight decides.
There in the blue, a resilient hue.
Here on the ground, thoughts spin me around.

Green rises up to the heavens above.
Buds pucker out with nary a sound.
Laughter dissolves in the winds over time.
Memories are tossed in the space of my mind.

The leaves on the trees are waving at me.
The cost of this story is plain to see.
In the space of a moment, the earth turns me round.
Leaves me to wonder what else can be found.

Drifting through space with a smile on my face.
Dreaming of things I can still believe.
Walking the walk through the tales that we weave.
I'm treading the water in this silent pool.

I’m nobody’s fool but a fool I am.
The raging tempest blows me away.
The expanse of space is a welcome place.
The rhythm of days is that which remains.
This is pretty much a stream of contentiousness.

Sprout (Choka)
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
Yearning for sunlight
In this warm summer daydream
My stem reaches out

From the moist earth around me
Into the sunshine
I reach out for the heavens
Just learning to sprout

In the breath of the morning
Down by the river
With the crisp air around me
I  bask in the glow

In the still of the daylight
Warmed by its bright rays
Mesmerized by the dewdrops
I can now cast my shadow
Started this poem about a week ago.  Then my body decided to have a stroke. Spent four days in the hospital and then came back and finished the poem. A brush with mortality can surely sharpen the senses. All is well though.

The Moment (rewrite)
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
The moment is tiny yet grand in scope.
It’s all that we have but riddled with hope.
The point of the arrow is sharp and true,
Threading its way through the expanding view.

It’s the only time we’ve ever had,
The only thing we we can hang on to.
Building our space around each new moment,
Time is woven into magical dreams.
With nothing left but the threads that we weave,
The tapestry unfolds for us to believe.

To Be
Richard Grahn Aug 2017
Deep down inside
Thoughts do collide
And spill out onto the page.

The memories they chase
Are naught but a dream.
The picture they paint
Is not what it seems.

Real or imagined
The feelings stand true.
Reason compels us
To do what we do.

Beyond the horizon
A future takes shape.
The visions entice
But our thoughts must suffice.

The gift of this moment
Is passing away.
The next one may bring us
Another hard day.

Or maybe we’ll find
A reason to stay
And dream up a chance
To have it our way.

Twisting around
In the pool of our thoughts,
The dreams and the memories
Help us get lost.

The heart of the matter
Is what we must see.
Believing in magic
Is how it should be.
"Do you believe in magic?"

A drip in the clouds...
One drop…
                      flowing down…
                                                    across the wind…

Rain keeps on dancing

And quickly dissolves…………….into ripples.

Independence Day
Richard Grahn Jul 2017
I’m used to spending holidays
In the company of friends and lovers
The other day there was no other
Not even a hint of my little brother

I stood in a crowd of perfect strangers

Alone.

The sky was filled with twinkling lights.
All around the booms resounded.
People laughed and time slipped past.
I settled in

To watch,
To listen,
To taste,
To touch...

Inside my mind, I missed her touch,
Her laugh,
Her warmth,
Her smile,
Her love...

There on the trail beside the lake
I tasted all the happy sounds;
The scent of charcoal, blackened meat
The laughs of children, light of feet

Flowers bloomed in the fading sky.
Waves rolled easy on the sandy shore.
The moon rose high to greet the night.
While the stars lay hidden…twinkling.

All caught up in the sights and sounds
I pondered there for quite awhile
Behind these eyes the thoughts did fly
I cannot lie, I wanted more…

…To feel the sand between my toes,
Her hand in mine,
Our thoughts entwined.
To linger on that pleasant shore
And share our time forevermore.

But the past takes flight and now it’s gone.
Daylight drives away the night.
The sun shines bright;
My thoughts are light.
The blues have flown
With the red and white.

Tempest of Illusion
Richard Grahn Jun 2017
I live with the premise that,
Life has some meaning,
That time is not stealing,
Instead it’s revealing.

But...

Inside the mirage
Is where we reside.
The waves of our time
Just keep drifting by…

We’re washed up to dry
On the desert’s hot shore
Where the visions we see
Are so hard to ignore.

The illusion resides
In the depths of our minds
Where reason dissolves
And mystery evolves.

The tempest we see
When we look deep inside
Is all just a dream
That our memories abide.

That or This
Richard Grahn Jun 2017
Only* made nothing!
Only that or this.
Only for a moment but,
Only for a kiss.

Beware conceived of something.
Beware of that or this.
Beware of giant thoughts in there.
Beware of mindless bliss.

Content took just a moment.
Content with that or this.
Content to breach the levy.
Content in the abyss.

Always stops at nothing.
Always that or this.
Always finding something.
Always gets the gist.

Amazed comes on in waves.
Amazed of that or this.
Amazed rained down in teardrops.
Amazed was not remiss.

Aware was very clear to see.
Aware of that or this.
Aware took all the rainbow seeds
And vanished in the mist.

Amazed, she kissed the Only.
Only touched Beware.
Content reached out for Always.

The Need
Richard Grahn May 2017
Down once again to my last working pen
I scribble at the lines just to make them rhyme
A message in time stops me dead in my tracks
I twist it around just to get to the facts

Dear reader: you know what to do with this prose
Just chase it around till it fits in your mind
Settle on back and leave it to flow as
The page comes alive for your very own show

I will not pretend or lead you astray
The cliffs they loom high but the path is wide
We shouldn’t get lost but maybe we may
It’s just an excuse ‘cuz I wrote it that way

The legend is true so take it in stride
It’s time to let go of the things you can’t hide
Perhaps you can plant your very own seed
Or maybe you’ll find some time to unwind

The words found in here are not all that clear
But out on the page they ring and they rhyme
The tale that they tell cannot be described
It’s all in your head or perhaps it’s in mine

Time wants to drift and wither away
So I just have to say what needs to be said
The story is mine but yours for a day
You’ve read to the end in your own special way

Passion’s Flame
Richard Grahn May 2017
Rivulets of flame
Lick at the wounds
Of a thousand lifetimes
And countless tears

This flame is a passion
A fire in the mind
It’s lifetime is passing
But it isn’t done lasting

Burning the strife
From a well-weathered soul
It cuts like a knife
Where the malady lies

Its heat melts the ice
Frozen deep down inside
Its light casts a glow
Where the shadows reside

This flame will not die
While the dream is alive
It runs like a stream
Through the channels of my mind

The world may be turning
But the flame keeps on burning
This passionate inferno
Will not be denied

Earth, Wind, Fire and Rain
Richard Grahn May 2017
Breaking on a weathered shore
The waves of time in tempest rhyme
Relentless through the open space
They’ve left my mind in a scattered state

The winds of change have blown this way
Across the void into my dreams
Upon the mountains of my mind
And through the valleys they do whine

The trembling earth beneath my feet
Shakes me up and all around
Gravity’s tremors wrestle with me
To pull me down into the ground

A raging flame roars in my ears
I turn around to face the sound
That fire that burns inside of me
I hold it close but carefully

The churning vortex draws me in
Its clutch is great and the goal is clear
I spin and spin till the daylight’s gone
And find no end to its endless song

There’s nothing mentioned that can’t be said
But the wheels of fortune can’t be read
The mind of matter can’t be defied
And the rains from heaven will not be denied

When rain comes down to quench my flame
When the earth turns round and pulls me down
There’s very little that I can say
But I choose to take it my very own way

This was a fun write in a serious sort of way. It started with a simple line a just grew from there. By the end of the first verse, there was a roadmap in mind but that roadmap kept changing right up to the last verse.

'I have never started a poem yet whose end I knew. Writing a poem is discovering.' –  Robert Frost

One Tiny Seed (Choka)
Richard Grahn May 2017
I’m one tiny seed
For a little while longer.
My hope is to grow
And present you a flower.

I don’t need much care
But I need to be watered.
Illuminate me;
Let me bask in the sunshine.
Rejuvenate me;
Let me waltz in the moonlight.

I’m one happy seed.
Contemplate me completely.
Just plant me and watch
As I grow in your garden,
As I greet you each morning.
This is my first shot at Choka. Had to sleep on the last line. The 5/7/5/7…pattern has a distinctive rhythm that is tough to break out of at the end.
