Skin
Mateen Manek May 2018
Like stained glass,
Your skin tells me stories
Of past pains and rejuvenations,
And the feelings of insecurity
You wrapped around yourself.
I can see where you’ve healed
And the parts where the bruises
Reappear from time to time.
You wish for it to be clear
But, through it,
I can see your soul;
That is clear enough.

Time
Mateen Manek May 2018
The daylight fades,
Consumed by the orange sky;
A signal for the day
To say goodbye—
But that’s the great thing about you and I,
We are not bound by time.
Days and nights could pass
And our story will still continue,
New words day by day
Even when our days are so few.
And even when the final twilight
Comes and goes from our life,
The pages keep turning
All throughout the night.

Beginning
Mateen Manek Dec 2017
There are those who only believe in one beginning, writing their story as a continuous sentence.

I choose to believe that I can have many beginnings, some that overlap. Every adventure is a short story, every relationship scripted by the playwright and every tragedy dripping with noir. And I am the one who chooses when they all begin and when they should all end.

Passion
Mateen Manek Dec 2017
Like a raging fire
That burns so brilliantly
Leaping from one point
To another,
Like a raging sea
That brings everything into it
Consuming every fibre,
Like the smoke that dances
Between the windows,
Our passions shall become
Exactly that.

Indian Summer
Mateen Manek Aug 2016
My mind revolves around the Indian Summer.
The same one where you and I first met.
I told you upfront that I’d never been a lover,
But you’ve become the photograph stuck in my head.

The music filled the atmosphere
And the world became our playground.
I’m trying to remember what it was like to hear
The instruments that never made a sound.

The colors were much brighter
Where you and I would dance.
I used to be a fighter
Till the first time I held your hand.

I cannot forget that Indian Summer.
The same one where I first saw your face.
It was only the earth’s surface that I was able to hover
And now I soar with the stars in the never-ending space.

A Candle Story
Mateen Manek Jul 2016
There was no strength in flames
Until I saw her candle lit bright--
Wax dripping from the wick of the light.
It was as if her worries had melted,
Never coming close to closing the flame.
Yet she, naive as she may be, always worried
That it was inevitable, as it happened
To the people she surrounded herself with.
What she failed to notice was that
Her light was what was keeping the rest of us
From turning to the dark.

The colours dance together
In patters
Soaking up every drop of my eyes
And as they go, paintings of sunsets
And eyes and smiles
Found on the cover of books--
All images of a near past,
It's things like these that keep me awake
Away from the darkness of the moon
Or the sun in its footsteps
Away from time itself
And the absence of regularity.
No, I would rather live with my colours
And thoughts of smiles and the glitter
They bring to the drops of blue.
These are the images held in youth.
These are the images I will use.

Moth
Mateen Manek Jul 2016
You are a candlelight
Kept inside four glass walls,
And I am a moth.
I will keep fighting the glass;
To penetrate through
Until I finally have you.

Observation

Observe the light that dims out;
Understand that everything
Is meant to return again.

Colder
Mateen Manek Jul 2016
The light was visible in the dark.
I could see the white asphalt
Beaming through the window.
I could make sense of the streets
And though it was more of night
I could still see clearly
It kept me uneasy.

Wrapped around my shoulders
Like a hug and a blanket
I stare into the white that bled through the window
I could not see the night.
The night didn't feel like night
The day didn't feel like day
The world became a little colder
With every step I take.

I chose to stand still this month,
And for some reason it made sense
To be slow and hunched forward
To no longer own any energy
To realize that my heart froze over
Unable to keep my thoughts warm.

And though that winter felt so long ago,
It is vivid
Like the painting of the white of the asphalt
Bleeding through the window.

Dialogue #11
Mateen Manek Jul 2016
He said,
"But I am not perfect."

She replied,
"You don't need to be. You are simply human. And that, for me, is perfect."

It amazes me
That we are made
The same way
With our eyes
Our mouths
And our hearts,
Yet we are so unique
In the way we see,
How we speak
And how we
Love.

Mateen Manek Jul 2016
I read poems in the dark,
Managing to make sense of the work.

She brought a lantern
And illuminated the words,
Bringing me
To a new light.

I have seen you in the rays of the sun
As they shine over us;
Enlightening us,
Providing us warmth
On such a cold, cold surface.
And even as the clouds try to block you out,
You peer through
And you're sight of us is unbreakable
(A comforting fact that cradles us).
If we look hard enough
We could see you.

In my room, it is dark.
My eyes grow heavy.
And as I stand in weakness,
I hear a bird singing outside my window. There’s something in that
That makes my eyes stronger
And makes me want to keep going.

Sing me your song
And put me in a trance
Of love and devotion.
Your song blows on the embers
Of my soul and awakens them
From its dormant state.

Sing me your song
So I can fall in love.
Sing me your song
So I may discover my fire.
Sing me your song
And, someday, I will also sing along.

Midnight Lantern
Mateen Manek Jun 2015
There is a great big lantern in the sky
That shines through my bedroom window
Onto the darkened floor.

I see life in its reflection, and it terrifies me-
I see a pool of water, and a midnight secret;
I see a hand caress a cheek, and a love
That is only awakened by the midnight moon.

The water tells me of this tale and i,
I am captivated by this lantern light.‎
And I find its source; it is not the moon;
I had seen a projection from my hearts ruins. ‎

tore open, and spilled into the sea--

Her heart was a fountain, and I looked to it

Haiku #17
Mateen Manek May 2015
I've seen their love bloom
Like a spring morning with no
Fear of their autumn,
As if it could not exist.
The title suggests that this poem is a Haiku, but I would like to clarify that it is not. It is called Haiku for the reason that I released it in a series that was predominantly Haikus, and the form of this poem was based off of the structure.

Dove
Mateen Manek May 2015
Matches and fires, sticks with barbed wires;
Chaos and fear run happily and free.
Great big men in suits, and other liars,
Will be the first amongst you who will flee.

But amongst the chaos you see a group of hands;
You see they are locked; strong and unbreakable.
Barbarians smash their legs where they stand;
But peace can never be broken so long as to it you are faithful.

Those without fear and hatred, only love,
Will stand together and watch as their group grows.
Through all the hatred, rises a dove
And as she flies, you will see that evil hath froze.

But this can never happen so long as we hate;
Imagine the power and the difference we could make.
