001-- Haiku/Senryu
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
Heaven’s River flows
stardrops rain down through the night
***** out the candle
This marks the next phase of a journey to understand Haiku better.
Hopefully, I can improve on this eventually.

Temptation
Richard Grahn May 2017
You push me
You tempt me
You twist me around
You bring me sweet promises
Of things I’ve not found

You lure me with passion
And tell me sweet lies
You move me with reason
When I look in your eyes

You offer me sunshine
In the darkest of skies
You taunt me with laughter
And the thought of surprise

You’re really so clever with
These promises that you make
I’m lost in your banter
About the chance I should take

Nothing is clear here
Though it sounds pretty good
You said I could try it
But don’t know if I should

I’m enthused by your passion
And the song that you sing
You’ve captured my memories
But it starts to sink in

I’ve been tempted before dear
And you won’t be the last so
You can take what you’re selling
And skip right on past

Inside your temple
The Angels resound
With sounds from the Heavens
Drifting around
Tried a variety of 2nd stanzas here but in the end, nothing came close to what I was looking for. I'll just let this stand on its own. Ah, brevity.

Friday night again...
The fountain pen drips and plays.
Staining the pages,
Rearranging the phrases,
It’s lost in the fray,

Contemplating the ages
A mystery steals the day.

Treasured friend, reach out your arms
And lift me up into your boughs
Share with me a memory

Cradle me with tender sprigs and
Rock me gently in the breeze
Caress my soul with autumn dreams
And let me rest here in your peace

Drip…

Drip…

Drip…

Splash…

A bubbling brook?

No…

It’s a raging sea washing over me.

Have I gone mad?
Yes, raging mad…but

I never felt so very happy.
Never felt I could feel so free.

Now is beautiful. The future is beautiful.
The past is gone but I’m still me.

I’m not a flea, just a speck of dust.
Just let me be and we shall see.

The world, the city, the house, the car,
The universe so near yet far.

How can I be so truly blessed?
What have I done to deserve this test?

I’m drowning here in the deep blue sea.
Happiness envelopes me.

It fills the void down deep inside.
Expanding vistas, once passed by.

Spilling waves across the page,
Can’t hold them back, they roll away.

Memories fly and I can’t decide.
Back inside, I cannot hide.

The current flows all over me
I’m happier now than I should ever be.

Drowning here in a sea of glee,
I’m taking chances merrily, so…

I’ll laugh till I cry as the tide rips by.
Fleeting moments never last this long.

I'll keep on swimming till the daylight’s gone.
Passing the hours with this joyful song.
"Today was the best day of my life...tomorrow will be better"

Moonlight
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
“Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Light shimmers briefly across the stage.
I catch a glimpse of the shadows it makes.
Is there not something more to see?
I wonder just now why it happens to be that
I can’t see the stars
but I know that they’re there.
Tonight in the moonlight
they’re lost to the night.
Under the glow,
I kiss them goodbye
And walk down the path
that this warm light defines.

Bird Man
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
“Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on Thee and I'll forgive Thy great big one on me.” Robert Frost

Scraps of bread for his feathered friends
Music for all his other friends
Poncho-clad in his favorite chair
Not a worry, not a care
We all flock around the sound that he brings
His box etches tunes that set the mood
We take it all in while
Our conversation wanders
These words they compel our love of life
It's easy to be with Bird Man and
It's easy to believe in birds

Bird Man (Antonio) is constrained by a wheel chair but he doesn’t let that keep him down. He’s truly a lover of both birds and music and he’s a great friend. One could only wish for a friend like him. Yes, I’m lucky.

Lying back in a bed of grass on a warm summer evening, there is no moon or clouds. There are no trees, no bushes and no structures in the periphery. Little twinkles of heavenly light, rain down from all directions, breathing life into the midnight sky. All around the whispering glow of the Milky Way gently teases the soul like some grand Pied Piper on a mission from God.

The soil beneath the grass is cool. The air is still. A meteor flashes across the sky then vanishes into a timeless sea of stars. The earth drops away as Eternity beckons, leading the dreamer into deeper space.

one small step…
tripping through fields of
dark matter
This is inspired by an experience I once had, literally feeling like I was falling into the stars. It was similar to the rush you might get from jumping out of an airplane. There was nothing in my view but stars. There was a moment when I realized we are just floating in space, just another speck in the universe. I was lost in space but I found something as well. The shock of it brought me out of my trance.

The Need
Richard Grahn May 2017
Down once again to my last working pen
I scribble at the lines just to make them rhyme
A message in time stops me dead in my tracks
I twist it around just to get to the facts

Dear reader: you know what to do with this prose
Just chase it around till it fits in your mind
Settle on back and leave it to flow as
The page comes alive for your very own show

I will not pretend or lead you astray
The cliffs they loom high but the path is wide
We shouldn’t get lost but maybe we may
It’s just an excuse ‘cuz I wrote it that way

The legend is true so take it in stride
It’s time to let go of the things you can’t hide
Perhaps you can plant your very own seed
Or maybe you’ll find some time to unwind

The words found in here are not all that clear
But out on the page they ring and they rhyme
The tale that they tell cannot be described
It’s all in your head or perhaps it’s in mine

Time wants to drift and wither away
So I just have to say what needs to be said
The story is mine but yours for a day
You’ve read to the end in your own special way
*“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” Benjamin Franklin*

Gently breathing,
Rock is sleeping
Beneath a tree.

Water seeps,
Roots drink,
Rock sleeps.

A subtle breeze
Tickles leaves,
Rock sleeps.

Whispering softy,
A lullaby.
Rock sleeps.

Roots envelope rock,
Hugging, squeezing.
Rock sleeps.

Hugging tighter,
Reaching in.
Rock sleeps.

Crack!

Rocks are sleeping
Beneath a tree,
Gently breathing.
This is dedicated to Ron who insisted that "you can't write a poem about a rock" or personify a rock. All my poems about rocks are hereby and forevermore dedicated to Ron.

Won't Let It Go
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Telling a tale that’s never been told.
I fight for the right to write it all down.
It’s not as easy as it looks don’t you see?
There’s no one here to do it but me.
It flew through the air and landed so close.
I couldn’t let it go just to wander away.
The rhyme is written the way that it’s wrote.
I can’t let it die before it’s been spoke.

Insanity
Richard Grahn Nov 2017
Walking through fields of madness, pretending all is real. Picking blooming flowers of sadness, descending deep into their scent.  Feelings grow in the waving grass. Teardrops flow from the evening sky. Rivers rise. Daylight hides. Just stormy clouds are left inside.

The wishing well is full of coins but still I stand here broke. Broken heart, broken soul, just token pieces left to hold. Chains of rain bind my brain, just thoughts of you in the misty haze…wandering through the cold dark maze, I’m searching here for the light of day.

Insanity might set me free. But I won’t get lost in this endless field. Forgetting you might ease the pain as petals fade in the pouring rain. But I’ll just chase my follies through the autumn leaves, pretending you’re right here with me. Caught in the gusts of a troubled breeze, I’ll bend with the grass till these feelings pass.

Caught up in wondering what might come next
I can’t see your ending before it’s been read
Your riveting passages unfold into mystery
They twist me around as you fill in your history

The pages flash by, the story pretends
I’m oft led astray till I reach the end
As the tale unfolds then leads me inside
I can’t get away from the clues that you hide

Don’t spoil the show by revealing the plot
Just let me get lost in the words on your page
We both can arrive at the same destination
All I need is a good explanation

Let’s capture the facts and set them to spin
We’ll ride on the tide and feast from within
You’re food for my thought, I cannot deny so
I’ll read you to the end or at least I’ll try

Spectral dreams.
Tiny seams in time.
Moonlight, rainbows, starry skies.

Wildebeests and cats and frogs.

Raindrops fall through weathered sky.
Daylight breaks, I wonder why.

The trees believe so why not me?

All I ask to ever be
Is freely growing with the leaves.

Believing in the things I need.

Your tender kiss
Formed a swirling mist in my mind
It left me there wondering
What else could I find if I opened my eyes?

Your gentle touch
Stirred the passion in my soul
And just for a moment, I tended the thought
Of what I could know if I touched you just so

Your wavy hair
Brushed away all my cares
And tickled my nose
For a moment or more

Your warm breath
Left whispers that rang in my ears
My heartbeat grew quicker
As you pressed yourself near

But...

Your magic compelled me
To open my eyes
And as my dream ended
You bid me good bye

A Poem Is Born
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
The very first line of every good rhyme
Is such a fine chance to step out and sing
While the following lines eke out on the page
It sits right there at the front of the stage

In from the eather it comes out to play
Holding its own on this hallowed ground
The words swirl beneath it and tumble on down
They’re caught in a the grip of its blazing reflection

Line after line, the story grows
In the split of and instant it falls into place
Caught in the measure of a casual endeavor
The words seek a song that can last forever

Flowing on down to the very last line
There might be an answer if you look at it right
We’re lost in the thick of the poets firm grip while
The magic upends us and slips off the page

I just got out of a session with my counselor. We’ve only been seeing each other for a couple of weeks but she’s already digging some buried stuff out of me. I was on the verge of tears as we talked about the demise of my last relationship. Just scratching the surface I fear. Obviously, I’m not so over it yet. The question may be, have I ever gotten over the loss of any relationship? Mom? Dad? Grandparents? Lovers? My dog? My cat? Oh yes, my cat! She's good.

yes, you left me...
