a long ago dream
the echoes of a long ago dream
play in the silence of a quiet sleep
a dream I once saw clear
a dream I once held near
but it faded like all dreams do
and drifted to the corner of consciousness

they are clouded and difficult to see now
these dreams of the unresolved
unexplored soul
what might I have found
had I heeded its call
its whispers
to follow
in the bowels of the ever after
a conscious soul resides
it distributes hope and heartfelt laughter
where true love slowly dies
it borrows smiles
for wasteful lies
and never asks a wage
provides a word to struggling poets
to offset certain rage
calms the heart felt burdened
by the madness in this world
and opens thought once buried
to peace and joy unfurled

the last lover leaves
the last lover leaves
before dawn
before the necessity of conversation
stale coffee reheated
brings the numbing reality that this was your last chance
old man
there's nothing left
no slivers of heart to give away
no thoughtful whispers in the dark that clever lovers say
you can no longer dance with brittle bones
your game has left you
and they were all games
were they not?
until the last sliver

now walk the shoreline as you always do
when they leave
and ponder the idea of love

being of sound mind
being of sound mind and body
I must write of the days when I was slightly ******
when I would disappear into the shadows
with headphones
Dark Side of the Moon
or I Robot taking me on journeys
only I could take
my room the isolation tank
Altered States
my mind the well that echoed within
sitar vibrations of an unspoken thought
dreams the night before realized in a wave
of painted sound
when the consciousness of awake and the boundless landscape of sleep
fused with the lost chord
one was as close as one could be to God

'let's walk to the ocean'
said the passing clown to the mime
it's quite a long way
expressed the mime
'yes it is?'
the clown replied
mime frowned
and they began walking...
clown in his big floppy red shoes
mime improvising as he went

at the edge of town they ran into a juggler
on the corner trying to pick up a few coins in his cup
clown asked the juggler if he'd care to join them
in their walk to the ocean
juggler said 'why not, things are kind of
up in the air for me right now'
they headed west toward the coast
clown had 5 boxes of Mike and Ikes...every flavor
in his red scarf on a stick
mime had plenty of slim jims
this would keep them fed until they reached their destination

several hours into their odyssey
a storm approached
a lone well drawn pine provided refuge until the storm cleared
as well as a snack and chance to learn of each other's journey
to this point
clown had done many things throughout his life
in pursuit of love, home and family
but he had failed in his search for a life he always dreamed of
and now this face of heavy make-up and big red nose would
hide the fact that he lived a life of constant sadness
mime had been a singer and worked for years to perfect
his craft... dreamed of making it to the big stage
but he refused to sing what they wanted him to sing and even though he had amazing talent, he was refused time and time again
becoming a mime would mean he'd never be reminded of the beautiful voice he possessed
juggler was a star pitcher known for his amazing fastball when he graduated college and was only days from signing a contract with the Yankees when a car accident damaged his shoulder so severely he lost his fastball
he juggles to keep his arm in shape in case his fastball ever returns
juggler asked clown why they were headed to the beach
mime was interested as well and produced the perfect look of inquiry
clown stood up...tossed the red scarf on a stick full of Mike & Ike's over his shoulder, brushed himself off and replied...
'why not?'
no idea where this came from

ghost crab
the ocean is restless tonight and moonlight breaks apart
then comes together like hearts of hopeless lovers
the earth turns just slow enough to see and not see the stars move
your shadow walks along wave's crest
passes ever so slowly and is eventually devoured by night
though I strain to still see
ghost ***** dance silently
free of their daytime tombs
indifferent to this pathetic being lost in useless thought
they scatter as the Sun begins to rise
and more of them bring their chairs

remains
if I wrote you the most beautiful poem ever written
would you at least contemplate the possibility
that I could love you?
if you saw me at the end of your most calming dream
would your eyes open to one who aches to see you smile?
if I could erase all the scars and all the pain that has been heaped upon your staggered soul
would there be hope for me to capture the light that remains?

i followed you
into the depths of your suspicions
your paranoia
your accusations cut deeper than you know
the night and day
black and white
love and hate dance we shared
brought me to the edge of my own delicate sanity
and to life itself
I loved you like no other
and hated you as I would my worst enemy
you were fire and ice
beauty and cancer
peace and war
I miss you to this day
and curse you for every day I lost
it was the best and worst of relationships

against the Sun
i want to write
but the words dangle like crow
on a wire
against the Sun
their black shine ablaze
i no longer fly to join them
they caw and move on
the old man is done
i watch as they become small
and fade into the darkening skies
time to put the black book away
the Sun has set

hold the silence to your ear
and hear
the voices of the dead
in their desperate loss

whisper the solace they have found

the spirit carries on
in the silence they await

kiss of death
what is it that I seek
here in the dark hours
the spirit's time
I awake to fingers dancing upon
the nape of my neck
and whispers of a lost soul
seeking connection
to it's once breathing consciousness
to me
why am I drawn to your realm
perhaps the answer resides in the truth that
I was not intended
conceived against doctor's orders
avoiding certain death
many times
including my first hour
perhaps this is the reason I feel closer to you
than my mortal self
counting the breaths
as I edge nearer the kiss of death
my birth

the poet in me
the dreams are forgotten quickly
no longer a source of interest
of mystery
or even sadness
they are simply accepted and left to vanquish
into the ether
the years
the words
the search for fire
in a dormant soul
the light is flickering
the voice is quieting
the vision of a kindred spirit

the poet in me
meanders alone in his thoughts
that are short and void of secrets
he no longer hears the call
no longer seeks the path
to discovering
the perfectly articulated

beautiful nightmare
when I died
I did not sense or feel myself
leave the body
I was just inside
and then outside
there was no sense of time
of pain
of anything other than conscience
there were no walls, no pressure
no sky or ground
no sea or wind
only thought and light
as I've never known
and then
I was not dead
all had returned
all that I had suddenly despised
blinked back in
and to miss death less
I simply wrote it off
as a beautiful nightmare

the spirit in room 331
the ceiling light at the door flickered
and the hair on my arms
stood like a thousand churchgoers
rising from their pews at the Priest's command
I knew I had a visitor in my hotel room
Spirits can be very particular about what you ask them
I inquired about the flickering light and his or her name
with no response
but then I asked;  'do you like to stay in this room?'
and I was amazed to immediately hear their response
'I...like the room'

the direct responses are the most rewarding
the connection narrows the divide
between the living and the dead
we are all connected
and to those who grieve for their loved ones
who's spirit lives on minus this mortal coil
it is just a matter of time
before we are reunited for eternity

delicate thunder
it's a delicate thunder that warns from a distance
to choose a path of least resistance
to curb the urge of feigned persistence
enjoy...do not curse the rain

it's an essential darkness that clears the course
aligns the heart and mind...the force
connecting soul and Mother's source
awaken to your dreams

it's a Fatherly Sun that warms from afar
the perfect balance...the perfect star
we are specimens in a specimen jar
yet unique in all time and space
I had heard this or part of this title somewhere and I couldn't place it...it is actually borrowed from 'The Delicate Sound of Thunder' by Pink Floyd

it's only for a moment

in the light of your agony
sensing for a brief click in time
the solemn dark halls
where you now reside
a touch of hands
a tear wiped away
a painfully strained invite to call
and when the final rights
the final grains of dirt
seal your final day
my soul goes with you
and it shall be no more than my mortal coil
they bid farewell
when my final breath is spent
remorse for someone suffering a loss is so brief...

touched by a ghost
i had moved from the bedroom a few nights earlier
i knew i wasn't escaping the giant red spider made of neon
or the spirit that awakened me by slipping into the other side of my bed
or the whispers just before fading off
no, i wasn't escaping at all
and on this night i was made aware of this fact
overtly
first the hair on the arm
then the awareness
the clarity and cognizant knowledge
of someone else
next to me
have you ever touched a low voltage fence
that surround livestock or horses

touching your ankle
then your knee
before ending at your wrist
this was no nervous twitch

this was my spirit friend telling me
you cannot run
you cannot hide
and you can no longer deny
my presence
this is my home
and you are my guest
now

the road
the days come and go
like mile markers on a highway
miles turn into weeks
the years are brief stops
to take a look back at what I'm leaving
this time
the valleys between the mountains
the beaches along the coastline
the storms between the Sun and stars
all add color and begin to define the canvas

the journey nears it's end

down the valley
it left one night
when the wind was unusually heavy
and the air was biting cold
it is brutal this high
in late December

I felt it go
making it's way down the hall
and lingering at the door
for an unusually long period of time
I cared not that the snow was deep
and the wood was thick
the whispers of your fleeing love
could not be heard above the deafening roar
of Winter in these mountains
I stopped to listen or to see something,
anything between the gusts and the landing flakes

I had been gone an unusually long time
as you watched from the bedroom window
by the time you made the call
after finishing your coffee
the tears had long since frozen to my skin
and my pleas had long since echoed down the valley

so this is Christmas
so this is Christmas
and what have we done
war is still blazing
while we burn in the Sun
glaciers are melting
our coasts disappear
it's 70 in December
and we're full of good cheer
our country is wasting away at the core
the doctrines set forth
don't exist anymore
we ignore mass genocide
in poor countries but leap
to right all the wrongs
where there's oil to reap
when the rich do their drugs
we're so sad for their disease
when the poor do the same
they are lowlifes and thieves
with all our technology, our knowledge, our toys
millions still starve
deck the halls girls and boys
and while oppression occurs
every minute, every day
we idly stand by, disregard, look away
we turn on our TV's
and bask in it's light
Merry Christmas to all
and to all a good night

I begin my walk
on the circled asphalt path
behind the old Lutheran church
founded in 1790
the crickets chirp
a defiant roar
as I descend upon their quiet space
clouds are dark and a bit threatening
are they spirits taking form above me?
mistral winds on a windless day
seem to gather and fuse into words
sentences
held for a moment...clear
then lost to fuzzy and distorted whispers
'They are here...'
'Isaac'
'Listen to me...I must ****'
'I have an angel'
'power'

before departing
I stop at a headstone
I'm not sure why
but I attempt
to pronounce the last name of this departed soul
3 times
on the 3rd try I am interrupted by a young boy
who corrects me with the proper pronunciation
I turn at the gate and advise the spirits
that I am leaving
a friendly 'okay' came back to me

I have walked in the living room of the dead
upon review of my 20 minute evp session in this cemetery, I came upon more than 30 anomalies including several direct responses. The response I got when pronouncing the last name on the headstone and being corrected...may be the one most fascinating evp I have ever captured.

a honey bee stung me
not because I disturbed the remnants of his hive
or stepped on the flower he sat upon
I watched puzzled as he struggled on the ground
after burying his sword in my arm
thus sacrificing himself
in honor of his brothers and his queen
you see
he was the last
he had no voice to tell me of their fate
the destruction we'd wrought

this creator of sweet nectar

the sting was brief and I brushed it away
and continued on
as we all do when only temporarily impeded
unaware
the sting about to come

sanctuary
I drove past the tree
that saved me many times
when I was so young
it reached it's limbs and called me in
and I would wile away the hours
watching the world move below
blind to my hiding place
I held tight as the cruel older kids
walked by
looking for me to belittle and abuse

my friend has withered in the waning years
his bold trunk now dry and hunched
his strong broad reaching arms now drooped
by his side
I'm not sure on which limb I carved my initials
or what side I buried those baseball cards
in a sandwich bag and my Dad's cigar box
he got me through those early years
my sanctuary
my protector
I catch a final glimpse in the rear view
I have to smile as it looks as if his top limb waves to me
but I know it's just the breeze
when I was a kid I spent hours climbing and hiding out in a tree just outside my backyard

a family plot on the opposite end of an empty 3 or 4 acres
this wasn't in the description
but I find nothing more comforting than a few dozen resting souls
nearby
while I too rest
I awoke the first morning to a sigh and then another
as clear as if she were laying beside me
and later that day...near dusk
I paid a visit where she rest
and returned with the sounds and images of my new friends
the Austins, the Stowes, the Farrows and the Wades
the blackbirds squawked and jumped from tree to tree
they did not approve of my interest
perhaps they are the protectors of these souls
settlers of the Outer Banks
this just occurred last week. I will be posting the video on Youtube. There are several anomalies...voices, etc. One of which is unquestionably a breath, sigh, inhale...that comes at the gravestone of William S. Stowe. I will add a link after I post the video.
