The Lonely Lion
PaperclipPoems May 2017
The lonely lion with monkey ears
He always wanted to be strong
He watched the others jump and play
While he sat back and sang a song

The giraffes and the elephants would pass and nod
But oh, how they wondered about him
Why was he so quiet and unlike the rest?
Why are his ears not like his kin?

The lonely lion watched his brothers fight
He watched his sisters bring in food
But he saw the plane in a different light
And for that he was misunderstood

He thought he might be kind to all
Maybe find a man friend or two
He knew the others wouldn't understand
But then again, he was already different in their view.

Monday Morning
PaperclipPoems May 2017
I missed my exit this morning
My boss is blowing up my phone
I don't know what to say to her, my foot wouldn't let up
I just continued south about three hours ago

I'm not sure where I am or where I'm going
I picked up a few bad habits along the way
Somehow this tequila/coffee mix in my sparkle cup
Seemed like a good idea today

These dusty roads have seen me before
The lost girls, numbing their brain through the stereo
I'll keep driving until I run out of gas
Or until I reach the border of Mexico.

A Desert Dream
PaperclipPoems May 2017
It was a seductive day in Phoenix
The only one I'd ever seen
Rain fell from the heavens so harshly
This wasteland turned into an evergreen

Just as overbearing as the heat of day
This desert showed no mercy
The barriers were broken and the flood was released
Blessing this land with novelty

Thunder like drums through the midnight skies
Lightning to lead our way
For twenty-four hours, this place was pure ecstasy
Never was there a more enchanting day.

Prisoner
PaperclipPoems Apr 2017
I must be stupid
I must have lost my mind
There's a space in my hollow head where you walk around
Banging on the walls and the door
You talk to me through the vents manipulating my feelings

I may be smart enough to know I don't love you
But I must be stupid to keep you up there.
Ugh! I don't even know. He was so irrelevant to my life and yet I can't let him completely go.

Your Message Has Been Sent
PaperclipPoems Apr 2017
I sent you a message today
It reached an infinite abyss
Or maybe someone else
Or possibly no place at all

But those words were meant for you
And even though you're gone I can't accept the truth;
That you'll never respond.
I miss you every day.

PaperclipPoems Mar 2017
From my three-story apartment window I hear the 2am bar fights,
The sirens of the city race by...
I hear the breaking glass from another wandering soul
and the couples that hate each other then make love in the dark alley below me...
I feel the breeze blended with artists dreams pass by,
I lay in this Cal. king drowning in pillows,
Staring at these 1930 off-white walls that have been molested by so many forgotten visitors,
I lay here and I know why I lay alone...

I'm so consumed by the life outside my window that I do not notice when a life walks out my door.
You call it *****, I call it home.

Poet of the Heart
PaperclipPoems Mar 2017
I wrote of Demond's that invaded me. Demond's that corresponded with my brain and danced with my soul. Demond's that abducted my heart and blinded my eyes.

I wrote of Darla, my idealistic alter ego. The one who dreams of romance and treads passionately towards it. The other girl inside of me who forgives and cries without remorse or regret.

I wrote of heartbreak and abuse from past lovers. The torment of a fractured heart and the loneliness that was left. The neglect from my childhood and the pains of independence. The confusion of men and the unanswered question of "How will I ever heal".

I wrote of my habitual infidelity and thirst for love. My attraction to danger and lust for something more. My deepest desires and most remembered experiences. My darkest fantasies mixed with a little chaos.

In all of this, I still feel the need to say more. Somewhere deep inside I crave to tell the world what's on my mind and written in my heart. Even in knowing I'll never say it all, I will always try.

Welcome Home
PaperclipPoems Mar 2017
Welcome home to reality where you lose what you love
This place you call safe, may not be secure enough
~
This land you call free may leave you broken and bare
And just when you think you've made it, you're nowhere near there
~
Welcome home to this place that is fueled by power and greed
Give it your best shot, but you may never succeed
~
Hope for the best but you may shatter your dreams
You may cling to hold it together and still fall apart at the seams
This does not reflect my mood today!

You know that it is true what they say, don't you?
That love is blind...
But do you know why?
Because her lover carved out her eyes when he learned that she saw him with another woman.
Even still, she loved him to her last breath in his arms.

I'm humbled by the storm
It's a reminder that I am not in complete control,
That there are forces that shape my destiny
And outcomes in which I do not plan for.
I close my eyes listening to the pitter patter on my porch
And check in on the water flow that fills the trenches.
I surrender to Mother Nature and bend to her will,
I am grateful for this magnificent life I am blessed to live.

She is the crisp air that fills my lungs
The damp salty wind in my beach hair
The cold wet sand between my toes

From the snowflakes on my tongue
To the redwoods that surround me,
Her independence and diversity
Are my sweetest comfort.
As I drive south with her at my back
It is a sad and painful goodbye.

I Met Alice
PaperclipPoems Feb 2017
I tripped down an endless rabbit hole
Some might say I was swallowed
I fell down, down and tumbled around
Until I forgot the land of tomorrow.

I met Alice and she was darling
We sipped tea and spoke of rhymes
Trying to decode the words of the Hatter
Searching for where the rabbit lost his time.

We danced on the shore of day and night
Followed paths until they were swept away
And when we were tired and had enough
We snuck into court and extended our stay.

Alice and I, oh how we fell
Off the earth and into an abyss
Absorbed by each other, forgetting our troubles
Spending each remaining day in complete bliss.

PaperclipPoems Feb 2017
All I do is think of you
So I drown my mind in liquor
But you swam to the bottom to rescue me
And I woke up from it all even sicker

I can't stand it, but I miss you
And I numb my heart in ways I shouldn't
Trying to fill this empty room you left in me
But I know it'll always be vacant.

Traveler
PaperclipPoems Feb 2017
He wound up at my door one afternoon and asked if he could stay for an hour.

We wined and we dined and hours turned into months. A friendship built on stories and laughter, I invited him to stay.

He nodded to say yes, but I could sense hesitation in his eyes and the unease in his hand movement.

That night we said good night and I knew he would find himself at a new door step tomorrow morning.

In The Reserve
PaperclipPoems Jan 2017
She spent every day under the cypress tree
Listening to the ocean in all its glory
The people passing in all their hurry
The birds singing in all their harmony

She spent every day beside the ocean
Wondering why she feels so broken
Wishing she could remain there, frozen
Silently wasting away, regretting the paths that she had chosen

She spent hours upon hours with her feet dangling off the cliff
Convincing herself that if she fell she would never be missed
Believing happiness was just a jump away, a dive into the mist
Hours until sunset then she was inclined to resist

Tomorrow is just the same, I shall watch her debate
Watching her from a distance, implicitly afraid
Admiring the same soul that she chooses to hate
I watch her and I wait, day after day.
Just a memory of a lost soul.

PaperclipPoems Jan 2017
I still hear your voice in my ear late at night
I sometimes feel your lips against my lips

Drifting towards you through your whisper
Somewhere in between my reality and my dreams
You seem to always linger

PaperclipPoems Jan 2017
It will break you, challenge you, shape you.

It will rip your heart out and devour it, ***** it back up and serve it to you for dinner.

It will twist your mind and make you question your sanity, your intentions, and your morals.

It will leave you on a street corner begging for a ride or curled up on your bathroom floor with a half empty bottle of gin.

He said "It feels like I'm dying"
I replied "Part of your heart that you gave away is dying. A piece of you is decaying. A vital ***** is suffering.
But you will live. You will grow. Then you will love again".

Terrible You
PaperclipPoems Jan 2017
I love you to pieces
But I'm terrified of you
Trembling that I may be blind, that there's something major I'm missing...
You seem just too good to be true.

I ponder for hours late at night wondering
What could there possibly be?
Your flaw, of course, your skeleton in your closet...
What is it that you haven't told me?

Something that would surely scare me off,
Something I couldn't possibly tolerate,
Please baby, if there's something you're holding back...
Tell me now, don't be afraid.

You see, I love you to pieces darling
But I'm terrified of you,
Terrified I may learn something that would tear me to pieces...
Something terrible about you.

Until Death Do Us Part
PaperclipPoems Nov 2016
The worst part is that I don't want to let you go,
because I can't accept this life without you.
Cody, I know you're looking at every one of us today. From another world or another place. Happy Thanksgiving my dear friend. Words just aren't enough and no matter where I go or what day it is, I carry you with me. From the ring that was intended, to the wedding we dreamed. From the courtships we watched each other go through, to the jail house steps. Thick and thin husband. You were always there for me. And for that, I shall always carry you with me.

Maybe it'll find you more solace than it ever did me.

Just
PaperclipPoems Nov 2016
382 days and counting
Since I've last seen you
Not a day has gone by since then
That I don't incredibly miss you
Hardly a single breath of fresh air has been
Inhaled without even the slightest hint of you
And all I seem to do is drink more without you

382 days checked off the calendar but I still keep waiting
Anticipating for the morning I wake up when I'm no longer waiting
Waiting to let go or the day I stop wasting
Wasting these days away, erasing the images I keep repainting
Beautiful mural images all over my mind and I can't  stop retracing
Remembering all of our bitter night endings
are better than this empty bed that I'm facing

382 days have passed and I'm trying to let go
Clenching my fists toward my stomach and taking a blow
Pulling my hair out from the roots just to watch it regrow
Smiling in front of the world and screaming into my pillow
Going crazy and wishing I could go back to 382 days ago.
This came out of nowhere. Dedicated to the one that got away, the one I gave away because he was not good for me, as you can see. Just a thought that turned into a rant. Don't worry, it happens.

The Huntress
PaperclipPoems Nov 2016
She was the fighter, the rebel
Hidden behind cherry lips
Pale and slender, a voice that would make you surrender
With eyes like an eclipse

Carefully plotted schemes she carried,
Delicate steps she always took
Armed with an army of mischievous intentions
She played the good girl well, but she was undoubtedly a crook

Ask any man, he'll tell you so
She had a reputation like no other
If you'd met her, you'd surely wish you hadn't
They call her the Heart Hunter.
PaperclipPoems Nov 2016

Boy meets girl with his eyes closed.
As tiny peanuts in shells, inside a glass bubble
So fragile and gentle they grew as a double.
True miracles on earth have been born
Loyal to each other they are sworn.
Children, we welcome you to a bright new world
Mother and father, meet your little boy and girl.

Mustard & Mayonnaise sandwiches
Because nobody grocery shops in this place
After some time I learned to adapt
So it just became the new way

Oversleeping through breakfast
Lunch is noon and night
Mustard & Mayonnaise sandwiches
Because they satisfy my appetite

I begged my dad for turkey and Swiss
But he always managed to forget
And when friends asked "what do you got to eat"?
I'd say Mustard & Mayonnaise sandwiches

It's the little things we remember when we grow up
The dullest things can be so significant
They're a symbol of my childhood,
Those Mustard & Mayonnaise sandwiches
PaperclipPoems Oct 2016
But we decided to play hide and seek in this bed
Pulling the sheets over our eyes instead
Gripping each other through the heat of the moment
Bitter Monday mornings when our eyes were forced to open
Guilty pleasures and a wrong turn in judgment
Amidst the pillow-talk and screams you became my weekend sacrament
Just because. Good night

Nightmare
PaperclipPoems Oct 2016
Getting older, learning to burry the past
Looking for men who may heal me fast
Found myself in bad situations, the kind that wake me from my sleep
When all I ever wanted was someone to love me
Bare hands kept me silent
No matter how far I go, I can't run from it

No nightmares again he said, and we close our eyes
But still I wake at 3am fighting the Demond's in the night.

PaperclipPoems Oct 2016
I stood there and I stared at him
I told him I loved him and it'd all be okay
But he knew I lied again.

2am and I'm barely getting home
He's waiting in the living room by his phone
Waiting for enough strength to tell me to leave
Instead, I open the door and he leaps to embrace me.

He knows what I'm doing
He looses his mind, I continue to submit
He's screaming and crying
He pushes me and I deserve it

There's not a thing that I can do
There's not a word I haven't said
I shatter him into pieces
Every night I come home from another's bed.

Distant Blood
PaperclipPoems Oct 2016
I thought of her often
She was a siren in the distance
Faint, annoying, pulling me aside, distracting me.
I thought of the way she loved me
A breathless love, a selfish love, more like a ritual.
I thought of her coldness,
The way she shut the world out.
She would look me in the eyes
But I saw nothing. I felt nothing.
I've never felt less from another's soul.

I think of her often,
But I don't like to.

PaperclipPoems Oct 2016
I saw her
In the dark, in that alley way
Leaned against the wall
One foot resting behind her
One slightly in front
She smoked her cigarette and looked at me like I didn't know about pain
She hardly saw me
But I saw her every night
I passed her and she always waited
For the next guest, for the next moment.
She was like chalk
Pale and stale. Diminishing and entertaining
I noted her dark red lipstick.
Compared against her white skin and black hair it was the closest thing to life that I could relate her to
Her eyes always followed my footsteps past her
I watched her contemplate her choices as I faded down the street
But still every night I continued to see her.

Pick a star darling
And my heart will be drawn to the same
As we stare at the same sky from separate worlds
I feel my tears fall and I can't restrain.
One by one they make a path
Through my makeup and to the ground
I close my eyes just to see your face again
But not for too long, for my eyes would drown.
They melt into my book pages
Little black droplets that leave fainted stains
You cry too, from heaven I feel you
While I stay here silent in your rain.

Diablo
PaperclipPoems Sep 2016
I had a dream of you
But somehow it was mixed with reality
You hated me because you loved me still
And yet you found someone to replace me

I was envious of her, jealous that you chose her
Even though I had someone else too
She was the woman, married to Hector
Whose sister you slept with when I loved you

We exchanged our daughter in a parking lot
You made no effort to hide her
Foreign emotions overwhelmed me
Settled resentment returned

Her name I always remember from high school
She is Blanca, still technically Mrs. Blanca Garcia
Somehow you both resemble the devil
To remind me of your affair with Hector's sister, Ophelia

¡Diablo vete!
You're a past memory, long forgotten
You come in the night, inconspicuously
Finding any light left to darken.

She Said
PaperclipPoems Sep 2016
My momma told me not to love
She said it only breaks your soul
She talked as if it was a being
That walks the earth and swallows you whole.

She told me not to love
That it lies and misleads,
Not to fall and not to cry
Or else I can be sure it'll find me.

She told me not to love
She said it wasn't worth the pain
She said it's like playing checkers, over and over
And always loosing the game.

She said I would regret ever trying
And that I'd always come back in tears
So I was cold and I was empty
Dodging every opportunity through the years.

But now I think I found someone
And I think I want to give him a try
Standing in front of him, facing my fear
I'm ready to know what love is like.
