First Snowfall
Ann M Johnson Nov 2016
The snow is falling
The traffic is crawling
The world looks all calm and bright
If only for a moment everything looks pure under the freshly fallen snow and the glow emitted by the  first snowfall of the season
My mood is happy I hope it lasts all season and throughout the new year too.

The Canvas
Ann M Johnson Sep 2013
One day there was a bright glowing canvas, a pure sparkling white
It was beautiful, but not complete
Then someone came along and drew lines on it to form flowers and mountains and streams, it was more beautiful and it made the natural white look more distinct
Then one day someone else added color and the canvas radiated and became more and more complete, it seemed whole and functional
Suddenly, one day someone came along and slew the canvas, destroying its color till it showed black, and an ugly black
The canvas seems so drab so empty without its color, so lifeless
People refused to help the canvas, refused to anything about the canvas slayer refused to listen to the canvas’ plea
Instead the canvas slayer’s free to roam free to hurt and damage other canvas
Who will restore the canvas?
Who will bring justice?
Why is the canvas slayer free to roam while the canvas feels imprisoned, crushed, victimized?
Why is the canvas treated like a criminal?
When will the canvas feel free, joyful and peaceful?
THIS POEM IS DEDICATED TO VICTIM'S OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND OTHER FORMS OF ABUSE.

A perspective poem
Ann M Johnson Apr 2015
I at times will wake her up
reminding her of important stuff
I guide her by giving her the weather report
So she is appropriately dressed
I correct her  grammar when she chats
I help her stay in touch with family and friends
My list of duties appear to never end
I keep track of important dates
I give her the time so she is never late
I do all these tasks without thanks or praise
If I would just suddenly quit
She would just move on to using a newer version of me
because all I really am to her is just a cell phone that is what I was created to be
Written from a perspective of a cell phone, perhaps you would like to write a perspective poem of your own, Happy writing to you!

Count Your Blessings
Ann M Johnson Nov 2013
I resolve to count my blessings not just at thanksgiving but all year long
I heard an attitude of gratitude can alleviate some symptoms of depression
I consider it a blessing to have a roof over my head
It is also a blessing to have a bed
I also consider it a blessing every day my bank account is not in the red
It is a blessing to be well fed
It is a blessing to have family
It is a blessing to have friends
If I keep counting my list might never end
My friends please try to count your blessings

Waves
Ann M Johnson Mar 2014
These waves of emotions have taken me by storm
These waves of emotions have made me forlorn
I am at times riding the waves higher than the trees
Then I plummet lower than I seemingly can be
I am drowning in the ocean, can someone rescue me
from these waves of emotion

In The Silence
Ann M Johnson Sep 2015
In the silence I hear him calling
   He's calling me
In the silence I hear him singing a sweet melody
through the wind and the rustling of the trees
In the silence I sense his presence
In the silence I reach for him
In the silence I confess to him
In the silence I cry out to him
   I know he comforts me
In the silence he heals me
In the silence I have peace within

In the silence I envision him dying
He died for me and you
In the silence I know he is living
He is living for you and me
In the silence I know he loves me
In the silence I know that I want to live for him
Jesus is there in the silence
He's calling to all of us in the silence
I  found this in an old folder that I wrote about 27 years ago and thought I would share it for the first time now.

Fool's Gold
Ann M Johnson Aug 2015
Not all that glitters are really Diamond's or Rubies or Gold
Well that truth can be told by an undiscerning miner
who quickly had to learn the difference between what was real
and false and thought he struck it rich
only to discover he could not bank on his claim
He wanted to make a name for himself
instead he was a victim to the glittery deception
of Fool's Gold
Way too often people fall for something
that they mistook to be real
Infatuation gets confused for love
True love takes time to blossom and grow
carefully watered with selfless understanding
respect and caring,  patience and acceptance
of each others faults
It can bloom with encouragement
and appreciation
and survive time apart
free from jealousy which try's
to corrupt the heart
If you have a true love
hold them close to your heart
Daily tell them what a treasure they are
If you don't, wait patiently
and take your time
remember what the miner learned that not all that glitters
is really gold
You don't want to fall too fast without clearly thinking
and discover that what you really had was
Fools Gold
You can best summarize it that sometimes in life hindsight is 20 20.

Smores
Ann M Johnson Aug 2013
A marshmallow slowly roasted over a campfire
Some chocolate oozing down my face
some gram crackers  crunching under my teeth
I can't always make smores but I can have some more
I want some more kindness to put a smile on my face
I want to express that kindness to others around me
I want some more quality time with family
I want some more good friends to surround me
I want to be a great friend in return
I want some more compassion to ground me
I want more passion when I right even if it keeps me at night
I want the sight to find the beauty around me and you
Do you want smores too?
Do you want some more in life?
Please reply if you like smores
Please reply with what you want some more of in life.

Daylight Savings Time
Ann M Johnson Mar 2016
Oh it is that time of the year again
I have to set the clock's again on my microwave
on my alarm clock
on my wristwatch

It's that time of year again
  it fills me with dread
I become reluctant to leave the bed
even if I try to go to sleep early
as hard as try to sleep
I'm forced to count the sheep

The one clock I can not set
is the one that is most upset
My internal clock does not wind
to automatically set to daylight savings time
May I make a request, please
Just don't mess with people's circadian rhythm
As far as setting wrist watches. I am thinking about buying two cheap watches one set one hour back for fall and one set an hour ahead for spring. How does that idea sound?

Blurred Lines
Ann M Johnson Apr 2017
When heroes are perceived as villains and villains are considered heroes our perception is skewed
Once too many lines are crossed and boundaries are removed. Then cauos ensues and is thus free to rule.Would this even be displayed on the 6 o clock news?
Or would it just be considered necessary collateral damage?
Who would still be left to calculate the final cost on all of us?
I recently watched a movie at a friends house in which the villains were precented as the good guys. That got me to thinking and writing this as a result. I would appreciate your feedback on this poem, my friends. Thank you for taking the time to read this poem.

A Day Without Coffee
Ann M Johnson Sep 2013
I tried to start my day without coffee
It was harder than it first seemed
My get up and go left me in the dust
I had a caffeine withdrawal headache so bad I felt I might scream
I seemed to move slow like a scene of the zombies from The Walking Dead
I thought I should not  have gotten out of bed
I realize that this is nothing a few cups of coffee could not fix
I can hardly wait to drink that brew
I toast to all of you!

I'll be alone for Christmas
  You can count on that
There is snow and no mistletoe
   No presents and no tree

    Christmas eve will find me
    Eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's
    I'll be alone for Christmas
    Yes, even in my dreams

    I'll be Alone for Christmas
    There is snow, no mistletoe

    Christmas eve will find me
    Eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's
    I'll be Alone for Christmas
    Yes, even in my dreams
     Yes, even in my dreams
I do love Christmas, whether Alone or not.
Hope this is a comic relief from holiday stress.
I think I'll need to have Kemps
I can not afford Ben & Jerry's

Sven and Olie died and went to Hell. After awhile, the Devil came by to see how his new guests were doing. To his amazement, he found Sven and Olie were still wearing their winter gear and seemed to be quite comfortable. The Devil asked why they weren't hot.
Olie replied, "We come from Minnesota where it's always cold. This is feeling pretty good to us." This upset the Devil, so he turned up the thermostat. Awhile later the Devil looked in again on Sven and Olie. To his surprise he found they were still wearing their winter gear. The Devil questioned them on it again. "You have to remember that we are from Minnesota and it's very, very cold there. This is feeling nice to us."
The Devil was even madder at this, so he turned the thermostat all the way up to maximum temperature. The Devil waited some time and then went back to Sven and Olie. This time he found they had only unzipped their coats, but still had all their winter clothes on. The Devil couldn't understand what was going on. The punishment down here was supposed to be the unbearable heat. It wasn't working on these two. He had to ask again what the deal was. Sven replied, "We are Minnesotans and we just got over a freezing winter. This is really great for Olie and Me.
A light flickered in the Devil's mind. He went to the thermostat and turned it off. He thought if the heat wasn't a punishment, maybe he'd give them some freezing temperatures. A little while later the Devil came back to check in on Sven and Olie only to find them cheering and giving each other high fives, happier than ever! The Devil questioned them on their actions and Sven said happily, "Back home they always said, the Vikings will win the Super Bowl when Hell freezes over!!!"

Trending
Ann M Johnson Aug 2014
I don't know the secret to having poems trend
There are some poems I feel certain that they will trend and they do not
I have read many excellent poems that did not trend, the list seems unending
I still feel that they are worthwhile ,especially when they caused a laugh or a smile or even a  tear when I really need a good cry
If the poems effect me or others I feel they are successful no matter whether they are trending or not
I feel bad for fellow poets if they get discouraged if their poems don't trend, the heart is such a fragile thing to mend, especially if discouragement sets in causing them to question their talents or ability.
My advice would be just write, if it trends great; if not keep writing don't give up
If you are writing to an Audience of one or 500 just get your feelings out you many be surprised by the results someday, you poems may really touch peoples lives that can relate to them.
Whether the poems trend or not Keep Writing!

Garden
Ann M Johnson Jul 2022
I think that I want to plant a garden in life
I want to start with lettuce; lettuce be helpful
lettuce be kind,
lettuce be thoughtful, I hope you don't mind.
This garden I plan to share and you can join me if you care
Keep in mind that we need to ****: **** out anger,
**** out strife that threatens to choke out our delicate plants
Next, maybe we can try some squash out prejudice, squash out greed, and help
those in need. It doesn't always take money to lend a helping hand. Just lend a listening ear or any special way only you can, and perhaps we will all grow in a more peaceful land.
Maybe if we all work as one it will matter to many people and they too will help us plant this garden, And don't forget the water which joins us together in this garden of life, For the water is love.
I hope to meet you in the garden, there is always room for more understanding and together we can discover what great things this garden can bring.

Sunny Day
Ann M Johnson Jun 2014
There is nothing like a sunny day in the month of June,
to chase away some gloom.
It was great to have a break from the rain, and some sunshine for a change.
Ann M Johnson Oct 2014
I went down to the shopping mall
Since I saw one store I thought I should see them all
They said they except Visa and MasterCard and American Express
To use one or all or none that was the ultimate test
It would have been best to walk out with a full pocket book
But I thought I would just take a look because
I was Bored In the USA
yes Bored in the USA
Just for fun I thought I would try things on
especially those items with a sale sticker on
I rushed to one store than to the next
If I have to carry much more stuff I might break my neck
all because I lack self control when
I am Bored in the USA
I tried to resist shopping again
My friends and family said I spent too much
I thought my computer would be safe to touch
I saw an add for items from a favorite seller on EBay
I thought it was Ok just to look, one click is all it took
I now am Highest Bidder
because I was Bored in the USA
I did not really need it but like I said
I spent too much because
I was Bored in The USA
Bored In The USA
Bored In the USA
Just listen to Born in the USA and got this idea, I hope it makes you smile on this Monday! yes sometimes I do shop to much, especially when bored or emotional or hungry.

Distraction
Ann M Johnson Nov 2014
I have been so busying studying
That I need a distraction
A break from the action on my computer screen
My mind is so full of random facts and data
I am getting a migraine
My brain needs a break
Should I bake a cake
or is that the stress talking
Maybe I should  be walking
I don't want to walk alone in the dark
I hope the neighbors dog don't start barking
I really need my sleep tonight
If my eyes were not so sore
I might just cuddle up with a good book
Thinking of a temporary distraction
My feet will make some traction on the kitchen floor
I will make a cup of Hot chocolate
read a poem or two
Sit in my lazy girl chair drink the hot chocolate
and think of the best distraction of all
All of my poetry friends
Have a good day or Night
I wish to thank you all for your wonderful poems
and your friendship :) :) :)

Bookworm how I envy you
you live and ingest the written word
You have been around many volumes of knowledge
Taking it all in adsorbing it all
Living through those words and living because of them
Do you have a favorite type of book?
You may have even seen some famous authors
If you could write you would already know, many words
If I could let the words all sink in as well as you
I could be a remarkable student that is why I envy you
Should I be a bookworm too?
I once saw a real Bookworm once in a book I had been planning to read.
That and all the schoolwork recently has inspired this Random poem.

I'm Becoming
Ann M Johnson Aug 2014
I'm becoming stronger everyday
I'm becoming a better person
I'm emerging from the cocoon that held me bound
I'm breaking free from the shell
I don't want to be like a bird in a cage
I need to be free to fly
I don't want to be held bound by anyone's opinion of me
or anyone's insecurities including my own at times
I need to be free to roam
I need to be free to recover and free to discover what I need to
I need to be free to express myself and time to reflect
Free to think
Free to feel
Free to live with a healthy dose of zeal
Free to laugh at myself and others
Free to cry when hurting
Free to smile when happy
Free to Love
Free to make my own decisions
Free to make my own mistakes and learn from them
Free to be me and accept myself for who I am
Free to change the thing that I dislike about myself
Free to grow
Free to show my feelings
Free to soar like a new Butterfly
I am becoming Butterfly Ann
This is a poem reflecting on the feelings and thoughts concerning Recovery from a Depressive disorder I hope it reflects what it is like for me and I hope others can relate too, and that together we will get the proper recognition for our recovery process. It is best to speak up instead of hiding in silence.

Traveling Businessman Blues

Traveling Business Man Blues

(Tune of Folsom Prison Blues)
I hear the whistle blowing as I see the train go around the bend. It has been so long since I have been home I don’t even remember when. I’m stuck in my man made prison working every day, while my lady and my kids play. My wife likes to drive her BMW while my kids have all the latest high-tech- gear. I saw the pictures on Facebook because I have not seen my family in well over a year. My father always said son be a good provider while mother pleaded me not to forget to be a good family man. The airport lost my luggage again it got stuck in Reno while I am here in LA. At night, I get so lonely while in my motel room I sit alone and silently cry. Maybe this is normal for the life I’ve chosen of being a traveling business man. Yet every time I hear the whistle blowing I have thoughts of home.
I get to thinking do my wife and children miss me as they eat their meals? The times passes so quickly, I fear my youngest will be full grown by the next time I return home. I have an inner struggle between work and family and it tortures me inside. I wish to be free from this prison, it was too easily to get ****** in. In this lonely life, I am living it is hard not to get the blues. I would trade a thousand dollars just to be the one to tuck my youngest daughter into bed and kiss her cheek and tell her good night in person. I am stuck working yet again to close yet another big deal. Instead, of another high priced  meal with a client. I would trade it in for a home cooked meal with my family even just once more. The money was nice at first but each day it is costing me so much more. I seem to be drifting farther away from my family with each passing day. I wonder does my family still love me now that they barely see me or just love the money I’ve sent home. I hear the whistle blowing and I wonder if I would die tomorrow how would my epitaph read? Here lies a family man, or more accurately here lies an absent father imprisoned by greed.
I am in no way a match for Johnny Cash, I am only a poet and student with barely any cash.  This is a work of fiction not based on any person. I heard someone sing Folson Prison Blues, over my break from school and my imagination started wandering as evidenced here. I hope you like it anyway.

Your Steadfast Love
Ann M Johnson May 2017
Your steadfast love

Your steadfast love O Lord never ceases to amaze me
My mind is in a state of awe at the vastness of your love
The vastness of your love could cover mountains at just a
Thought from you

If I were to count the amount of love you have for your children it would outnumber the stars and outweigh the grains of sand.

Just to think that your love existed before we came to be
If all your love was revealed, if all creation declared it if all nature proclaimed it, the oceans would drown in your love for your love is far deeper and your love is wider than the sky, for the sky is but a mere breath in comparison to your love.

Therefore, it is more magnificent than a mountain waterfall and furthermore. it never runs out. Yet it is always contained in your hand and freely poured out.

Hearts shout for joy with even a touch of your love for your love is warmer than a summer day.
Your love is steadfast and is a fortress forever to those who place their trust in you.
This poem I wrote quite a while back but it had been lost in an old notebook. I found it recently and I am finally posting it. I hope you like reading it my friends. If you like it feel free to comment, as always I appreciate your feedback.

Ann M Johnson Oct 2015
The Market crashed as the people dashed
   All the banks closed down
   The people frowned
   Natural disasters were all around
Stock brokers quite literally took a dive
   Many people died
On the day the earth stood still

    The daily grind
     The worry over bills
Was replaced with the need to just survive
Some people rioted just to get something to eat
On the day the earth stood still

       Some people screamed
        While others cried
Some people looked down looking for someone to blame
Still others looked outward and sought ways to help out
Some people banded together to keep each other and their         neighbors alive
        Some people looked up
While some people prayed for wisdom for themselves and others
        to get through this trial
Some people looked within only and felt all alone
Still others thought of this as a test of their will
On The Day The Earth Stood Still

I wonder if we were faced with this crisis
         would we stand together
         or fall apart ?
perhaps the answer is found already in our hearts
If we are lacking a strong network of family and friends
Now is the time to start
We don't want to be found slacking if the world falls apart
Sometimes things happen in a blink of an eye
It might be best to get ready just in case
No time left for slacking if The Earth Stands Still
I recently watched the Movie San Andres, and it got me thinking and writing with this as a result. I would love your feedback and comments Thank You !

Life In A Bubble
Ann M Johnson Nov 2013
I thought I would try life in a bubble safe from the worlds trouble
I also thought the bubble would keep me from germs a double blessing
Life here in the bubble seemed to go at a slower pace
I'm here in the bubble away from the human race
I am protected from crime
I am enjoying time with me, myself and I
I am not watching the news no news is good news right
I am shut out from everyone
I wonder does anyone remember me anymore
I'm starting to feel claustrophobic stuck in the bubble
I did not mean to shut out the ones I love
I would scream but no one would hear me
I am isolated from everything and everyone except my thoughts
I am imprisoned by my thoughts
If you were near, you would hear me say burst this bubble and let me out
I want to live life again
I want to breathe again, outside the bubble

Christmas In July
Ann M Johnson Jul 2014
It is Christmas in July
The neighbor's having  BBQ's
Inviting not just a few, but as many as they can fit
To roast Smores and sing songs around the fire pit
They even gave a poor boy a soft ball mitt
They fed some local homeless men and women too
They also inspired some random acts of kindness
I hope the trend spreads like wildfire
It is a wonderful time to put aside any family feuds
I don't know if the story will make the news

It is really up to me and you, to make it Christmas In July and all year too!
This is how it should be generosity not just ,on Christmas but all year long

I have to let you know  that I have a kind of pet he is quite unique
He is a Wookie  you may in fact rather kiss him than me
If my mannerisms get under your skin
I feel I should warn you about the competition that is interested in You
I heard about a fat ugly guy named Jabba The Hut, he might even want to imprison you
Well I heard you once were interested in your brother, I am willing to overlook that fact
I can tell you that dating me is not boring to say the least
We will fight against The Empire and you will get to meet many Jedi Knights
You and I together will have to dodge fire from Storm trooper  guns
Not to mention the dictator Darth Vader wants to **** both me and you
I will let you know if this don't appeal to you or sound like to much fun
You could date a certain doctor named DR. Who and see were he and his Tardis might take you.
This is dedicated to some friends of mine who are big science fiction fans, and my daughter who likes DR. Who
I also give credit to George Lucas who created the Star Wars films and Whoever created DR. Who

Gentle Rain ( 10 word)
Ann M Johnson Jun 2014
Gentle rain wash away sadness and pain, so healing starts
I thought of this poem after being caught in a gentle rain today.
I have known so many people in my life who are hurting
I dedicate this to everyone, who is hurting or have been hurting in the past.

The Ghost
Ann M Johnson Oct 2014
They called him The Ghost
He seemed to move practically undetected
Except for the destruction in his wake
Which made the people quake with fear
Whenever they thought he might be near
The people close to the victims shed many a tear
The authorities even shuddered and stuttered
When addressing and dealing with the crimes
Perpetrated by the infamous one referred to
   Only as The Ghost
This is my early Halloween contribution, perhaps I read too many mystery or suspenseful stories in my life time,
Oh well,I hope you like it anyway.

Life Happens ( Persist)
Ann M Johnson Mar 2016
I have had sorrow
I had pain
I have been locked out in the rain
I had stuff happen in life that's hard to explain
I have been knocked down and felt like giving up
Like a comedian once said " life happens when you make other plans"
That statement seems to speak some truth.
Life sure has not turned out the way I have wished
That is why I must persist

When I have planned for sunshine
I have gotten rain
Planned to be happy ever after
only to discover pain
Through it all I have gotten stronger ( I think)
Life is a work in progress it is not finished yet
Life happens but I must persist

I know what it is like to be hungry
or well fed ( think thanksgivings past)
Those are cherished memories
sure to last
I have found
There is more joy in being content
than in wishing for what I don't have
If I have somewhere to rest
or some food to eat
man, that is pretty neat

Some day's I feel weary or pretty beat
I may not get want I want
But it is a blessing to get what I need
Like family that I love
and a few close friends
on whom I can depend
When I think about that my live seems pretty full
I than feel more complete and whole
Let life happen if it takes it's toll
I will fight off worry
It can not add a day to my life
Or add more hair to my head
I would prefer not to have troubled
thoughts when I retire to bed
Life can be worth living
That is why I must persist!

INK Well
Ann M Johnson Nov 2017
There are times when words seem to flow effortlessly unto paper.
At other times it seems to be quite a struggle. The ink runs low or is in short supply.
My quill seems ill, or worn and damaged.
The ink on the quill threatens to dry up altogether, then a simple truth occurs to me.
I need to renew and replenish and restore my quill by taking a dip in the ink well.
I need the ink well to fully function. I was running dry trying too ******* my own.
My quill takes a dip in the ink well .May creativity flow from the ink well and fill the quill up to the appropriate capacity.
If an extra drop of ink should occur it should be available to share with another quill in need of refreshment.
If you find a friend who is need of encouragement don’t let their ink dry up.
Instead help them take a dip in the ink well. Where together inspiring words can have an endless supply.

Motivation
Ann M Johnson Oct 2014
Motivation I need to practice daily
One small step setting things in motion
propelling me forward
If I lose focus I remind myself of my goals
I press on and get back on track
Making me one big step closer
To making my dreams come true
I am grateful when I have motivation
How about You?

He Lives Within ( see notes)
Ann M Johnson Oct 2015
( written by my sister, shared with permission from the author)

                      He Lives Within

Within my heart there is a place,
Where love is always found.
The place is where my savior lives,
No matter where I am bound.
His name is Jesus and his face,
I someday yearn to see .
Jesus came for you, and me,
from sin to set us free.
Reach out for His loving hand,
and though your knees are weak,
He'll help you stand.
Look into His loving gaze,
He is with you through all your days.
And when He gently whispers your name,
You will never be the same.
This poem was written by my sister Cathy and appeared in the October 2015 , Sr. Perspective, River edition newspaper in the Poets Corner section. I am delighted that she let me share this with all my Hello Poetry friends.

Ordinary Day
Ann M Johnson Nov 2014
Just an ordinary day
doing things in an ordinary way
              tell you came along
Now I feel like singing a song
You made my otherwise ordinary day
                            Extraordinary in everyway
I dedicate this poem to my friends both near and on Hello Poetry
Who with their words and messages and presence make an otherwise
ordinary day an Extraordinary day.
Ann M Johnson Nov 2013
I went to Justin Ploof and the Throwbacks Creedence Clearwater Reviva Tribute concert it was a lot of fun it made me feel like I was a Fortunate Son even though I'm a lady
I thought of flowers and psychedelic colors or maybe that was the effect of colorful lights on stage
I saw some people Down In The Corner break out in a dance at least it was peaceful not enraged
I think the crowd went a little crazy when the Bad Moon Rising played I was encouraged by some friends to get out of my seat when they pulled on my hands and we raised our hands to the band
The blast from the past took people on a trip to memory lane ending the rockumentary  with Proud Mary, I wish you could have been there my friends!
