I want to feel you. Scraping against me. I want to taste the, Mango in your kiss. Drag from your chest to your neck. to claw from your ribs down to your hip. I want to feel you on me. And taste the citrus on your lips. Starving for the touch of, Hoping for your grip. Trying not to think too much. About your blackberry bliss. Distracted by your hammer hits. The water against the ship. The boat begins to tip. Spilling fruit into the wavy rift.

#*It's at the point of desperation that the soul finds its deepest desire, and in that desire lies everything of which true life is made. Perhaps the first and central question concerning surrender ought not to be, “What am I willing to give to God?” but “What am I willing to receive from Him?” For it's only in the realization that I have nothing to give Him and He has everything to give me that true humility and surrender come. If I would simply receive all He offers me and let Him fill me up I would have no room in my hands to hold onto anything else.   But how often it is that we won't receive it until everything else is lost. It's the secret and inexpressible dreams of the soul which are the hardest things of all to let go and the last to go. When they are finally gone we have nothing left to run to but Him, and when we do we find that He is the beginning, the end and the center of every secret dream. Ah, blessed Peniel—that mysterious and holy ground where heartache collides head-on with romance, that deep and shadowed land where we struggle with God and with men and we overcome, that painful yet glorious place which we may leave limping with a wrenched hip but we do not care, for we have seen God’s face— like Jacob, may we not pass you by without being forever changed.*#

All in green went my love riding on a great horse of gold into the silver dawn. four lean hounds crouched low and smiling the merry deer ran before. Fleeter be they than dappled dreams the swift sweet deer the red rare deer. Horn at hip went my love riding riding the echo down into the silver dawn. four lean hounds crouched low and smiling the level meadows ran before. Softer be they than slippered sleep the lean lithe deer the fleet flown deer. Four fleet does at a gold valley the famished arrows sang before. Bow at belt went my love riding riding the mountain down into the silver dawn. four lean hounds crouched low and smiling the sheer peaks ran before. Paler be they than daunting death the sleek slim deer the tall tense deer. Four tall stags at a green mountain the lucky hunter sang before. All in green went my love riding on a great horse of gold into the silver dawn. four lean hounds crouched low and smiling my heart fell dead before.

All In Green My Love Went Riding
They didn't know what Diversity was... The kids, that is. Since the kids didn't know it, the teacher coined it as "“black” visibility". She wasn't sure if she could make that call so she nodded her head, looking for approval. The interviewer asked in what direction did the teacher see Diversity As if Diversity was a one-way street. Let me just refresh your memory... "“black” visibility" As if decades of progress in the schools were undone, The kids voted on Performances and Projects for “black” History Month. How shocking!... Kids of every shape, size, ability and race studying a time in history... Sounds racist to me. They wanted a Gospel Choir that is clearly only for “black” students Because I'm the student Director for the Fordham University's Rhythm of Praise Gospel Chior for the fourth year running... Maybe I'm missing something... MAYBE I'm “black”... Maybe if I close my eyes really tight... Nope, I'm still “white”. Olive brown perhaps? Only in the summer. Anyway, I digress like Sophia Patrilo from the Goldren Girls Who was Italian by the way. Just advertising for Diversity. Let's debate about "Music Debates" for a moment. Maybe you call it Debates because Hip Hop is debatable, and by the way only for “black” students. When I could argue for days upon days About how Reggaeton didn't come from Salsa but I know **** well that Salsa came first. The kids wanted to Stomp the Yard and battle it out. I do believe rap battles take place around the world And one of the best rappers I know is an English teacher in Harlem Whose hair is redder than a leprechaun. Talent Shows that showcase every student's ability Whether it be singing, dancing, performing their poetry, But still apparently that's not Diversity. Neither is an International Day Where International ways are celebrated. And finally, a Diversity Day, That clearly means diversity is separated. "They wanted a lot of things" Yeah. They asked for a whole lot... of everything BUT diversity. That's right, because they don't know what it means The Kids, that is... Then tell me please: Define Diversity. Is it seeing a “black” horse with “white” stripes Or a “white” horse with “black” stripes? Why is it between “black” and “white”? Why not between “white”, “black” brown, yellow, orange, brick red... Let's get it out of our head That teachers can't learn anything from their students, Because it sounds to me, Like they had a pretty good start to the meaning of Diversity. And if it turns out they didn't, That's what teachers are there for: Make a **** lesson about it.

Day-colored wine, night-colored wine, wine with purple feet or wine with topaz blood, wine, starry child of earth, wine, smooth as a golden sword, soft as lascivious velvet, wine, spiral-seashelled and full of wonder, amorous, marine; never has one goblet contained you, one song, one man, you are choral, gregarious, at the least, you must be shared. At times you feed on mortal memories; your wave carries us from tomb to tomb, stonecutter of icy sepulchers, and we weep transitory tears; your glorious spring dress is different, blood rises through the shoots, wind incites the day, nothing is left of your immutable soul. Wine stirs the spring, happiness bursts through the earth like a plant, walls crumble, and rocky cliffs, chasms close, as song is born. A jug of wine, and thou beside me in the wilderness, sang the ancient poet. Let the wine pitcher add to the kiss of love its own. My darling, suddenly the line of your hip becomes the brimming curve of the wine goblet, your breast is the grape cluster, your ******* are the grapes, the gleam of spirits lights your hair, and your navel is a chaste seal stamped on the vessel of your belly, your love an inexhaustible cascade of wine, light that illuminates my senses, the earthly splendor of life. But you are more than love, the fiery kiss, the heat of fire, more than the wine of life; you are the community of man, translucency, chorus of discipline, abundance of flowers. I like on the table, when we're speaking, the light of a bottle of intelligent wine. Drink it, and remember in every drop of gold, in every topaz glass, in every purple ladle, that autumn labored to fill the vessel with wine; and in the ritual of his office, let the simple man remember to think of the soil and of his duty, to propagate the canticle of the wine.

Wrestling at Peniel
O fast day that trembles at the sight of Moon - when will your warm arms bend again the night's thick armor that shades the world of joyous muse?   It is most facetious in its illusion, that renegade of pale indifference, when daylight dwindles and leaves more to imagine than can be seen with naked eye.   Beneath the gaze of Her taunting face, people do not walk as done in light - suddenly, trudging and stumbling are hip style. Faces covered in guilt, remorse, fatigue - all the things Sun can wash away with a simple, lucid grin.   If brightest bright were set ablaze amidst the night, would people be plucked from this false sanctuary which darkness so convincingly provides? Then many a Lost could be freed; if only to see clearly through effervescent haze.   O blessed Sun! With your arousal, Truth and Freedom will also renew - until again that blank stare casts its malevolent glow on Delusion.

Ode to an Evening
Age and Grace Her steps were always slow; Even in youth she swayed, Walked with sultry composure And seductive flow. Like a heathen goddess, She tempers movement with grace. It was not done out of vanity, But pleasure in the flowing stream of steps That mark her pace. The relaxed fulcrum of her hip Tilts with undulations in the turf; Her feet tread lightly with a claim On the summer fields, On the bending trees Where beauty still abounds.. She savors the trailing of her skirt Through unseen paths in drooping grass. Until the evening mist accrues From out the forest paths Caressing her as she yields, Until she and it are almost one. Like Whistler’s “breath on a pane of glass”, She bargains with nature, Waning to become an aesthetic phantom. She stops at a window and watches With a sad smile, the warm light on life, The laughter, talk and dancing grace Of her children, who don’t yet know The bittersweet taste of withered garlands. Yet she accepts and passes into the dusk. Now she executes a careful, Battement fondu as her hands dip To reach the soaking pods Of next year’s summer flowers. Every move must be planned, To manage every hour. For they are as precious now, As her own days, Fading into glory and reborn, Into spring and youth’s careless riot.

Age and Grace
I think I loved you most the winter your heating was broken And we’d stay inside all morning Pretending to complain that we couldn’t get out of bed Our clothes becoming little islands on the floor, Ones that we could not quite find the courage to visit Your hand stayed glued to my hip, Your breath warming my shoulder Like a long drag of whiskey That kind that had a home so far away, In a glass bottle on top of your refrigerator. The one that would not be opened Until that fateful day in February, When everything went wrong And on that unbearable night When you joked that you’d freeze to death if I left you There was a long silence Like it might be true. Now it’s warm enough That I show too much skin when sitting in bars And you avoid me like the plague, Whispering in any girl’s ear that’s near to you Every time you see me watching out of the corner of your eye We should have stayed inside when the ice began to melt Because I think When those doors opened and we finally ventured outside The world had changed, And so had you and I.

The self I saw in you Was at the start an album Of smiles next to Expecting eyes I was in constant Flow To try and reach My open arms towards You, A Fun Time Shining in your white dress Me in my hip pants We cross the street Like we know Each others steps The world among us Is not the best We both fear, cringe But friend, you chose to love Me, in my midnights In my last songs You gave me you In every dance Like the moments never ending Time never said goodbye yet Because my hand folds into yours My Sister in a friend

Selfies
Having observed others and containing the self consciousness of a noticer (do other people look at me the way I look at them?) she would dress in old borrowed clothing that smelled like other peoples’ laundry and leather because secretly she wanted to wear the other people try them on and she had this wrinkle between each brow that made her look just sort of worried no matter how she tried to press and smooth that wrinkle down with her thumb and in very private moments she’d stare at her features in the mirror with a sort of curiosity because she’d been told by leering men that she was beautiful but sometimes she saw only features: Nose eyes mouth all in pretty good proportion sure but she supposed the thing that held her curiosity was not her face itself but rather the disconnect between the face and the universe of thought behind it and all this she’d marveled at a very young age as ma would see her staring at herself in front of the bathroom mirror or in store windows and tell her not to be so vain kid to hurry along And so she feared writing about her own vulnerable beauty for fear that she might be both of those things—vulnerable and beautiful. Instead she would take an hour long train ride, fake-dozing so as not to be ticketed, walk anonymous between busy persons until she reached a place that satisfied her Washington Square park, perhaps, or some small playground on the lower east side, or down by water or the hip corner shops in Brooklyn. And there, in strangers, she would find her vulnerable beauty, and there with the aid of a pen they became her and she became them.

Strings, strings, wrapping around porcelain skin, For why does the bruises not show? With a waist, hip, and two legs that are so thin, For why does the skin always glow? Hair that never sheds, nor grows, nor messes, For why does the girl not wash it? With a merry face that still never truly expresses, For why does the face not show even a slight fit? Stoic, conjoined, the feet never stomping, For why does the limbs never feel frostbit? Perhaps it is a lie that the being is a girl, As it is only with strings that she can ever twirl.

Stringed Girl
My poems idealize your tongue on my tongue your breath in mine, these verses will romanticize how we skipped from street to street our arms swinging between your left hip and my right like I did not think about how my parents never doubled their strength to pull me up above ground as we walked through parking lots. I needed to fly and no adult could let me but you. The sudden hurt, I have not yet dramatized that morning you returned my voicemail unsuspecting unknowing my intention to whisper I hate you I hate you I hate you. Every bone in my body had broken because we could not levitate any longer: you were not even strong enough to keep yourself grounded. I make you sound beautiful I make you sound ugly, but neither is real, just as how there are no words for the New Year ball dropping.

a september bride her hollow sounds fearfully echo on the leaf strewn trail with intonations of a blushing bride to be she makes a graceful vision obscured only by her hamfisted collection of undesirable father figures who stand round the groom and brow beat him with dire dreams but his eyes are for her alone and the tigers of her sensual rainforest "lions, tigers and bears...oh my!" she whispers into his eager ear with a sardonic grin her hollow sounds both haunting and beautiful they will stay with me as a soulsong long after history has devoured her namesake and words a quick poet of the three line shoot from the hip haiku pink glossy eyes all damp with remembered tears she is the quintessential september bride the long summer nights swayed her the longer cold winter may undo her but it is a girlhood dream that she knits with papier-mâché knights and bubblegum queens she waits for me there to officiate the proceedings with a bottle of red wine and single red rose wrapped in the tender notions of loves sweetest kiss

It is the way my traditional head cloth covers my head artistically. Giving me a sense of a gracefully hand made Crown. Passed on from generation to generation by My ancestors from all corners of Africa. It is the way my hands flatter when I narrate a story. Giving me a sense of articulation. Pride, dances through my veins. It is the way my body moves to rhythm from hip to hip. Shoulders momentarily shaking to the sound of unique beads woven Shekere. Legs aggressively moving to the talking drum. It is the way I speak to my elders with respect. Knees on the floor when taking or giving them something. Sweep the compound when asked to. Adherence of instructions turn to turn. Heritage moves with me in one accord.

Music provides a blanket of background noise, As you sit, in a velveteen chair, legs parted, hands on your knees, I stand between them, silhouetted against flashing gold lights, I stare down into your upturned face & slowly begin to undress. Piece by piece my clothing drops to the floor at your feet, Pooling around my clear, stiletto heels. Your eyes too drop down, lingering on my ******* My skin, soft & sun kissed, shimmers golden in the soft light. I turn slowly, allowing every curve of my body to be illuminated, The arch of my back, the contour of my hip & the arc of my buttocks Your eyes trace down my thighs, now spread & back up, As I bend, & reveal my inner most secrets to you. My sweet opening that promises so much pleasure, Just inches from your lips & your tongue & your pleasure. Slowly I slide to my knees, down on all fours, face to the floor, Inviting you to enter me, visually, take me with your eyes, I turn to meet your groin & I watch with interest, As I play with my ****** at the stirring that may come. I rise up instead, to my knees, cupping my ******* blowing, On my now ***** ******* & my eyes reach yours, And time & space hold for us, as we join together, for a second, Before I lean in, my breath on your cheek & I whisper, That's £20 please.

One friendship for the times we love, One friendship gotta stay alive...I will survive One friendship for the city streets, One friendship for the hip hop beats, One friendship...O, I do believe! One friendship is all I need..

One Friendship
The sunlight winks from behind the umbrella of leaves and mangoes overhead. It tickles your cheekbones like the first, second, thirtieth good morning kiss. Your sandals are worn. A woven basket rests heavy on your hip, in your hands. Your fingers, slender and worn by the earth, trace the contours of my face the way they search for meaning in a dictionary. Gravity. We inch closer. Have you always had a widow’s peak? Your hand finds it rightful place over my heart. I kiss you for the thirty-first time today. You taste of plantains and milk. You smell of sweat and the sun. My hand relishes in the traces of heat on your cheek. One mango drops from your possession. Unripe, but soon to be opened up and worshipped as it is meant to be. Your fingers grasp the yellowing heart and press it against my lips. I rest against the trunk and sink my teeth into it. Liquid sunrise trickles down your wrist onto my blouse. The leaves create shadow puppets on the ground, the story of two young fools swaying in the shade of a tree.
