Branded with Tattoos
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2017
I was barely even,
From Northern India,my mum's little one,
A child bride,
My husband's family rules I had to abide.
Godnas (tattoos) were mandatory for married women,
So several days after the wedding
done,
An elderly lady came to brand me alone,
Her tool, a needle, she would heat with fire,
Burn my skin and fill with colour pigment on and on she would not tire,
No anaesthetic  to numb the pain,
No cream to heal the skin.
I had several tattoos,
Subjugated  without any ados.
Now, my daughter is a different version,
She is a rebellion,
Refused to have the tattoos done,
I supported her and she won.
Rural Indian women of certain tribes had to be tattooed. It was compulsory or they would be treated as impure.

What Are They
Salmabanu Hatim Dec 2017
Both are similar,
Both have content matter,
Both save hassles,
One in communicating,
The other from washing,
Both have to be checked often,
What is going to happen,
One to see what is up,
The other to check what is the pile up.
What are they, "Sirs."
They are Whats app and pampers.
Both what's app and diaper have something in common. They need to be checked often.

I forgive others,
I forgive myself,
I thank God for another new day,

Touch one soul,
Encourage and hold a hand,
For one new day means one more chance to live life.

Metaphors
Salmabanu Hatim Nov 2019
My brother was a lion at home,
Protecting his family fiercely.
An eagle as a supervisor in the factory,
His eyes everywhere.
An ant, always busy never taking rest,
He was a cat and monkey, calm and agile,
He loved children,
He was a dove and a kitten with them, gentle and playful.
He loved swimming and was a fish in water,
He had won many national awards.
He was a fiddle but a wolf too,
Fit but always hungry,
He loved pizzas and anything that was barbecued.
He had his bad points too,
He was an eel, slippery,
Never committing  himself to anything,
He was also a mule, very obstinate .
And when he saw cockroaches,
He brought the house down,
Became a ghost, white sheet.

Thalassophile
Salmabanu Hatim Aug 2018
My sweetheart, the sea yonder,
My beautiful wonder,
My awesome tutor,
You have cast your enchanting spell over me,
For you,I yearn,
Lost in the heart of the great ocean,
So vast, depth unknown.
Calm, rough and unrestrained,
So many colours you contain,
Shimmering silver at dawn,
Green at noon, a glittering gown,
Blue in the evening with fishing boats sewn.
As I stand on the shore,
The waves play an encore,
As they lace their sprays around me,
I love you blue sea.
When I sit on the cliff edge,
I see you fume in rage,
Battering against the rocks,
Crying seagulls above me flock,
You calling me out ,
Without a doubt,
You are my lover at all cost,
In your soul I wish to be lost.

Delicious autumn,

Colourful autumn leaves fall,
Red, green,brown and gold,
In showers ,
Over little flowers,
A carpet hue,
Moistened by  misty dew.
Unmistakable autumn sounds,
Do their rounds,
Crisp leaves along the street,
Rustle beneath the feet.
A gaggle of migrating geese,
Flock the lustrous sky in bliss.

Come Close Honey
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2018
Come closer honey,
Listen to my heartbeats
yearning for you,
Like the sound of the ocean in a conch shell.
Come closer sweetheart,
Read our love story,
Etched in lines and shading,
Along the seashore of my body skin.
Come closer baby,
Feel how my breaths gasp and fall,
As ocean waves,
I, a windsurfer trying my best to hold on.
As much as you have made me burn in the raging fire of  my love for you,
I wish you to roast with me in the inferno.
If it had been a stranger I would have desired the same,
But, you are my love,
How can I?

Like Me
Salmabanu Hatim Oct 2018
"Granny, granny,come look at me."
There was excitement and urgency in my granddaughter 's voice,
I hobbled as fast as I could my cane thumping on the floor.
I stood there inside the door chuckling.
My granddaughter had become me,
She wore a tweed skirt high on the waist,
A white blouse with a high collar and a bow,
On her face she wore one of my specs which she had smeared with a bit of vaseline,
The effect was so that she could not see clearly like me.
She had put some pebbles in her shoes to enable her to hobble ,
Her hair she had combed into a bun.
Lastly she put on white gloves which she explained she had borrowed from my cupboard.
she held a dainty white laced handkerchief.
"How do I look, granny?"
"ME! I laughed.
"You will be the best granny in your school  fancy dress party.
Pray, remove the vaseline from the specs or you will fall down,
You can borrow my cane too,
I love you dear munchkin."

Our Fate
Salmabanu Hatim Feb 2019
I had loved you since as a child,
I never had the courage to express my feelings,
We parted and never met,
But fate had other plans.
You got married and I died on the same day.
We met at the crossroads,
You were in a Lamborghini,
I was in a hearse,
My soul saw you as a radiant bride,
I had always wished to see you as one.
You carried a bouquet  in your hands,
I had a wreath on my coffin,
People came to the church for your marriage,
People came to the church graveyard for my burial.
The priest read your marriage vows,
The priest read my last rites.
At your wedding the family cried with joy,
At my burial the family cried with sorrow.
Both had a grand reception,
Yours, with dance, music and a toast,
Mine was sober with some eulogies.
Adieu my love,
Be happy.

Haunted And Sad
Salmabanu Hatim Feb 2020
Silently,
Slowly,
Gracefully,
She blossomed,
Unfolding her beauty,
Petal by petal,
A perfect rose,
Sweet and  fragile,
Caressed by innocence.
He came into her room one night,
Her own peer,
He violated her,
Took away her purity,
Crushed her trust, self respect and joy,
With his greed, lust and evil intentions.
I could see her dark rimmed eyes, sad and haunted,
Now a tattered rose.

A Miracle.
Salmabanu Hatim Feb 2019
The wind whistled through the trees,
An ominous warning on her lips,
The skies were ripped apart by lightning,
The dark clouds thundered calling out my child's name,
Raindrops pelted on the window pane,
Threatening to break it.
I sat huddled in a chair,
Praying for a miracle.
My child lay on his bed barely breathing with no hope,
The doctor had left,
Now it was in the hands of Allah.
Suddenly everything seemed still,
Nature had quietened,
The candle stopped flickering.
I saw a large, dark silhouette  leaving the doorway,
It was saying,"My mistake, your child has long to live."
My son woke up with a smile,
"Mum,I was with the Angels,
It was beautiful there,
But they brought me back,
I was needed here to be with you."
I jumped up and hugged him tightly, tears streaming down my eyes,
What a miracle,
Allah had listened to my prayers.

Football
Salmabanu Hatim Jul 2018
To me football is
twenty-two adults madly running after a ball,
One referee running after them to make sure they do not fight,
And two linesmen who make sure they stay inside the line.
In their haste to put the ball inside the goal post the referee gives them a yellow card for misconduct or a red card  to send him off the field.
To top it all thousands of people pay a fee to come and watch them run crazily after the ball.
The highlight of game is a goal.
Whoever scores is a hero

Life's Like That
Salmabanu Hatim Jan 2019
We both live in Mumbai,
He is Harish, I am Jai.
He lives on the pavement,
Next to my luxurious apartment,
He lives in a shack with metal covered with tarpaulin roof,
It has a T.V dish and WIFI
Mine is hi tech and fire proof.
He sells Samosas on streets and trains,
I am a CEO of a huge company and its top brains.
He rides a small scooter,
I move in a a posh chauffeur driven car,
We are both dressed according to our status.
But, life is ludicrous,
He is always carefree, laughing and most happy,
Whilst I am always stressed and snappy.
He sells 4000 to 5000 samosas a day,
Free, sometimes by midday,
He gets a profit of rupees one for each samosas he sells,
Mostly he gets orders to deliver on his cell.
He earns as much as I do,
Makes me seethe red and blue,
He is his own boss,
Net income, no tax, no loss,
While I slog day and night for others,
Thinking of it makes me shudder.
He is even the owner of the house I live in,
My company has rented from him,
He even owns two more houses in the neighbourhood  within,
And a garage not  far,
Where it  services  our company's cars.
Life's like that.
Samosas are indian pastries with fillings of minced meat or vegetables and lentils

Leaf
Salmabanu Hatim Mar 2020
Lone leaf hangs onto the branch of a tree on the cliff side,
Nods at the breaking waves below.
The hustle of the wind,
Cause the autumn leaf to fall,
Twisting and turning through the rough air,
Like a butterfly in flight.
Down, down it flutters,
Whispering, singing exhausted.
The diver saw the pain and beauty in the leaf,
Caught it in mid air,
And both shimmered down onto the waves.
Even the smallest leaf must face its destiny,
Saved by the battering waves,
It was buried in the diver's garden.
