"snarling" poems
dead bodies floating in our oceans from the Asian Pacific to the Mediterranean crumpled corpses lying on our beaches thousands drowned unknown overcrowded detention centers not unlike concentration camps behind barbed wires guarded by police and snarling dogs nobody feels responsible not  those who started wars destroyed whole cities made millions homeless and into refugees not those who take advantage of the chaos for their own gain abusing the names of their gods or some ancient figurehead to excuse their atrocities and greed not those who live in comfortable homes and wish the desperate crowds would just stay on the TV screen and not come close nor those who pretend to be the guardians of our great humanitarian heritage but show no backbone against nationalist fanatics it is the shame of the world to sit and talk and watch and not do enough those who turn away the needy and homeless could also quite suddenly lose their homes forced to rely on the kindness of strangers

Monsters
The concrete jungle. Home of the dreaded concrete beasts Who lie in plain sight for the world to see Crouched in marble ledges, twisted in metal beams Wrapped around handrails, perched in their cemented trees They laugh at those who cannot perceive Because they don’t believe. And who am I, Yes possibly me To find my identity In removing my wooden sword from its sheath Placing it beneath my two shuffled feet To answer the alluring call of the beasts beckoning To my hero’s heart, for my eyes to blink To suddenly see them as they were meant to be. In a world between Real and imaginary. For it is I, Yes I believe it to be Chosen to find my destiny In a single push That propels me Into the path of the snarling beasts Approaching their stairs and rails, ledges and beams Gaps and bumps and ramps with speed And as they stare at me hungrily Opening their mouths expecting me I will stand strong on my wooden sword As the wheels of fire erupt beneath And the scenery blurs in the flash of the rapidity I bend my knees and grit my teeth My eyes narrow and the drum in my chest crescendos its beat A shout explodes from my chest, a primal scream As I press on In the concrete jungle. Home of the dreaded concrete beasts Who quiver in plain sight for the world to see And whimper at the sight of who they now perceive Because I do believe. And it is I, Yes undoubtedly me Who will find my destiny Conquering the concrete jungles of the world unseen Surfing the concrete waves of the world between With my loyal vessel being the wooden sword from the sheath, That remains steady in the face of danger beneath my feet. I am alive In the concrete jungle.

I slip under with a cry and am lost to the depths, sinking ever deeper into the blue as though bound by ball and chain What I pass on my way down is not glittering schools of fish or the benevolent sea turtle, but a circling, snarling mob of responsibilities, a sight more menacing than even the most cadaverous shark

Pressure
I heard a howling in the woods, freezing me right where I stood. That sound: it turned my blood to ice I knew he'd hunt me this full moon night. Great, big footsteps pounding near; Their deadly echo resonating with fear. His heavy breathing reeked of blood and thirst. I knew right then, I was in for the worst. I clutched my throat in desperate need of oxygen so I could breathe. Unluckily I began to faint. Knowing, once black, I'd never wake. And just as my eyes began to close I saw his wet, sniffing nose. I felt his snarling teeth biting deep inside of me. Then I knew that I was done. I had lost and he had won.

photograph One: i see you, and the first things i see are your dark eyes you sit beside me with open hands and make me laugh over coffee. photograph Two: one night i notice your mouth. you haven't drank but i have. still all i see are your eyes when you first lean in. i'm aroused and utterly haunted. photograph Three: you're so pale i want to colour you in. i want to make you alive. you're dancing so frenetically, my marionette man and i can't tell who tugs the strings. photograph Four: It's after midnight and you've stormed from my house snarling like a wolf waiting to die. "i'm poison" you spit. "i'll poison you, too". "you and me." i plead. "i won't run". photograph Five: it's a cloudy day. you tell me you love me without looking me in the eye. photograph Six: you're standing in the open doorway against winter wind dragging a half-quit cigarette and i am hugging my knees on your couch waiting for you to calm our eyelashes smeared chilly with tears. photograph Seven: you are lying on the floor, heaving with sobs. i am holding you as tight as i can because i don't know what to do and i'm afraid if i let you go you will cremate in the heat of your darkness already we are both husks. photograph Eight: we lie awake in your cold bed and we are strangers you will not touch me and i feel naked. photograph Nine: i awoke at 4am from a dream of you that was a lie many months after i fled from your ghost and like an infected wound it still throbs hotly that i could not save you and that for so long i could not save myself from you the dark-eyed boy with the angel tattoo

Red Ice
12 in the dark, I sit awake by the window, Across from Hyde Park, and the feel of the wind oh, Sparking a bark, Nana's remarking from below, Canine matriarch against the boy with no shadow, Time's flickering by and I begin to rust, Consumed, I'm high with lust just for pixie dust, But to fly you must be robust and adjust, And I can't, though I try, I just look with disgust, Sitting on the sill, I think of him mournfully, Hard as I try, I can't think of him scornfully, Despite the fact that he talks so informally, He says my name and I know I was born to be, Part of the family, I think of them nightly, Tootles, the twins, Curly, Nibs and Slightly, Second star to the right, it shines so brightly, Hope he might come back if I ask politely, He doesn't apologize, he's immature and he's cold, Lives in a land without rules so he can't be controlled, But as soon as I saw him I knew I'd struck green-gold, Peter Pan is a joke that just never gets old, Don't smile at crocodiles down in Neverland, And if you hear a ticking clock, hope the ships are manned, Because there's a high demand for the taste of pirate band, And if you're not hooked by now then Hook'll tell you first hand, I flew here like a bird in a night-dress, frilly, Scared, trying to fight stress, skin like Chantilly, Found Peter and I confess that the boy's my Achilles, Now I'm a lost girl treading on Tiger Lillies, Acorns and thimbles are my idea of 'bases', And sword fights with pirates are my ***** chasers, Watching the boys as they fly and admiring Peter Pan, But he's the boy who can't love here in Neverland, I wanted devotion, to marry men who were charming, So I repressed, left my emotion, I left Peter Pan snarling, My own species no longer, just a common starling, Caged by age at my window, I'm Wendy Darling.

I am Autumns baby my bones align every Autumn season I come alive, rising from the earthy soil I'm Summers poison, my blood all hazey sunsets and leaf mulch It's just something about the way the dawn and dusk shaded leaves flutter delicately onto my bronze barked skin and the way the forest breathes, shedding it's summer shroud of green, canopy now thin anticipating the snarling undertow of winters frosty bite how the branches twist their arms and fingers, reaching up to the light, sky as blue as my doe eyes the sunsets are all for me, low and piercing, using her fiery fingers to stroke my face I dance naked with the birds, the trees and the sun, a blur of grace I'm all variations of brown, with the occasional pop of green my lungs house my earth and its flower children, in my rib cage built of twigs with a magic sheen my hair cascades like a molten copper mess I'm a reflection in a lake, beautiful crystal but a construct you cannot caress luke warm, barren branches and burning peat crows, shimmering sunsets and crunchy leaves under your feet I am Autumns darling KG

Come Autumn
Snarling, fangs shining, moonlight illuminating ferocious beasts, limbs tangling, separating, lunging, caught within deadly battle. Scarlet streams trickle from trees gouged like the bellies of their prey, canine fiends bare their teeth, their growls like black thunder, facing these soulless demons smeared with the blood of many. Bodies drop with screams still rattling inside their rib cages, demons devouring with rage that can never be quenched, their hearts ripped from their chests, veins slit, arteries torn mercilessly out of still warm flesh. Creatures created from pure insanity that breed nothing but anger, fear and despair, children's corpses torn apart, their skulls shattered. Snapping of jaws still slimed with internal juices, bits of raw flesh clinging to hair that shimmers under the blood red moon. Hissing from the shadows, knotted into frenzied war, animated corpses beside twisted bodies of wolves, wounds gushing ruby tears, still pulsing organs shredded. Flames rush from overturned fires, shrieking forms, torches wavering through darkness. Pale beings gather for the finale, blood spatters across ground, staining everything within it's reach. Only two are left, facing each other in the coming dawn. Heaps of creatures litter this burned, bloodied ground, none alive.

Vampire vs Werewolf
Preach poverty and patience to the poor, When snarling winter packs hunt down the old; Push them away and shun them from your door Feed hungry souls with sermons and rapport, Old shepherds, keep your flocks unto the fold; Preach poverty and patience to the poor When heaven's snow attests to hallowed floor And beggars plead for mercy from the cold, Push them away and shun them from your door When hungry children cry 'a little more' And clamour forth with rusted tins they hold, Preach poverty and patience to the poor When brothers, plague and famine, reach the shore, The weak and dying seek to be consoled; Push them away and shun them from your door When paupers come with frosted feet to thaw, And fill the hall to hear kind words unfold: Preach poverty and patience to the poor, Push them away and shun them from your door

Poverty and Patience
I live in the wilderness The Sun shines on the trees and through the leaves Warmth envelopes my sanctuary Until darkness approaches like a fog The darkness is pregnant with sounds I hear animals snarling while bones are breaking Whimpers turn into blood curdling gargles As the darkness renders invisibility among predators And the darkness engenders vulnerability among prey I desperately want to help but there is a darkness barricade The darkness follows everything The darkness swallows everything I can hear planes crash And the passengers scream From within the darkness I can only see muzzle flash And the barrel's steam Creating hardship The darkness converts men to shouts of agony and rage The darkness blinds us from the writing on the page The darkness makes us believe That it's our reprieve Darkness has us in it's sight When we choose to live in light Even when we do what is right Darkness takes flight Becoming our plight We try to fight back with futility The darkness' bite has more utility We are engulfed by negativity As we lose all connectivity And our mouths begin to foam When the darkness is our home

Darkness
I wish that I could fall in love with a female, for she would make a far better muse than the gruff sailors and musicians and drunks and men in general that I am inclined to crave. to write about a painted pout or skin that brushes against your own like nylon, sunlight shining through the window onto a Cupid's bow and dancing down to a delicate clavicle, or black eyelashes that bat and blink remorse into your cavernous heart, to muse over such aesthetic delights, would be ecstasy for my poetess heart. I linger, staring, at beautiful women, androgynous women, delicate, feline women, stringing words together in my head over long legs and hair that flutters like silk, and they think I'm crazy or in love with them. well, maybe I am crazy, but I crawl into bed each night with my snarling, gleaming, mahogany gentleman, and I love him madly, my rugged muse.

How do you tell someone that you’re tired of existing? No one has done anything wrong, and by all normal standards this day has been quite nice, but something in me can’t handle that. Something in me can’t stand this constant standard of “surviving” Being exhausted of simply being is draining and no amount of stimulant can correct this. How do you tell someone that it takes all of you to simply wake up in the morning? To wake, to breathe. How do you tell them that it’s nothing they’ve done, but you just can’t do it anymore. How do you say **** like this? How do I think **** like this? Where could I go? France? Scotland? How far would I have to run for these hounds to stop their pursuit of me? Will they stop this chase? The answer is no. No, I don’t think they will. I think they’ll keep ******* chasing me. They’ll keep coming. They’ll keep this race no matter how run-ragged I may be. They’ll keep pace, keep biting at my ankles, keep snarling, snuffling, tearing the ground with their paws. They’ll hunt me until the end— no matter how many rivers or oceans I cross. Or maybe the river Styx will clog their all-knowing-noses….I shouldn’t have given them my scent. But they know it now. They know it and they want more. I’m living off jolts of too much caffeine right now. What way is that to live? Living, though is an overstatement. I’m not living— I’m just taking up space. Taking up space and filling up volumes with these hollow words— as if I don’t know how stale I sound. So where can I go? What do I do? What the hell do I do when I can’t even decide if I want to be Alive? What do I WANT to do? I WANT a house in the mountains. I want an herb garden planted in the shape of a sacred spiral. I want a river to bathe in, a fire place to cast into, a cat to hate and watch suspiciously, a dog to keep the hounds at bay, a kitchen to make magick and medicine in, and a bed warmed by someone else. I want cold nights and mornings warm only because there is skin against my back. I want not to be a prisoner of my own words. I want to stop dreading the day that I run out of words-- because the day I run out of words will be the day I let the hounds catch up to me. I want moonlight&moonshine.; I want sunlight and dizzy sun spots. I want trees and the sound of a roaring tuck. I want sweat and the smell of Wood. I want woods and warm skin at my back.

Once upon a time, Oh but that’s such a boring way to start-                                                                                  Once upon a time. I was little red riding hood that knowingly stepped                               onto the wrong side of the path, Hoping that a monster in the woods                                               would come and get me, but you- A hurricane,            car crashes in slow motion,                               personified heartbreak-                                                                          Too much. Too much applesauce madam? Lips snarling, heart breaking.   You’re sick. So maybe I was the big bad wolf after all.                    Stairwell bricks glinted off iridescence and                                                        your mouth in that sad, sad laugh Studying me like a dream brought                                                                            to the ground, Puffy lipped and eyes blown wide like I was on some psychedelic high-             And you said                                *“You’re still a child with fanciful ideas of love, and the way you cling onto them-                             Quite frankly, it’s terrifying.”*                                                      Please darling, let me redefine myself Skip the pleasantries and small talk,                      scrap the story of little red riding hood- Once upon a time, I was apology and you were forgiveness I can imagine inside you, of alarm bells and sunken souls                  as you listen to the static white noise of                                                                           A dying heart Hello darling, are you there? Can you hear me? Is this mic working?           I hate to sound like those magazine cut outs-                                                                     I hate to sound like, Just another lover, just another cliché-                                        But you were the matchstick to my dynamite                                                                             and nothing feels better Than my own self- destruction, so won’t you please                      Another chance? No?                                 Even Lucifer sometimes longs to be let                                                       Into the gates of heaven again I’ve cooked some apology,           I saved a plate for you So for the love of god come inside and have some before it goes cold.

Apple Sauce With a Side of Introspection
Once upon a time, Oh but that’s such a boring way to start-                                                                                  Once upon a time. I was little red riding hood that knowingly stepped                               onto the wrong side of the path, Hoping that a monster in the woods                                               would come and get me, but you- A hurricane,            car crashes in slow motion,                               personified heartbreak-                                                                          Too much. After decades and decades of distance I've found you The sluggish, torturous moments of the laps have finally passed. Time has bruised me, pounded me, bled me to the core. Hours spent as a pack of wolves, howling for a soul. I've hunted, starving in my travels. Searching for you. Me, a pack of hunting dogs not just stalking quietly through still woods.... but bolting with snarling furled lips.... exposing razor sharp fangs to sink deep within the throat of the love I long for. Hold tight until the struggling gazelle gasps its last. The hunt is over, the heart full from the gorging. Purring in each others company. While resting tranquilly on the aromatic clover. Riffles unable to focus, our stripes blending, as our bodies merge. The great cats we are, no predator to fear. We slumber and bask in our regal glory. Our cat eyes fixed on each other! © Crystal Erickson 12/14/07

Regal Glory
I saw a gigantic tree. Uprooted and on its side. The great roots forming a mane for the snarling ringed face on the stump. But the fallen beast is taken, it’s husk a Home. A vibrancy of weevils, ladybugs, frog hoppers, Cockchaffers that’s skittering, scattered like a smashed ant farm. Around its base were prehistoric ferns, Curled and scaled like sand lizards’ tales. Reminiscing the demise of the tyrannosaur. When dust clouds darkened the sun which warmed their claws. The skittering skinks, slow worms and other small lizards, who need far less to survive, then feasted upon the monsters’ flesh and found a home in its bone structured palace. As whale sinks, Distorted into a globster of its former self, It hits the sea bed hard in oil-Black darkness. The hagfish burrow, starved for millennia. Brutally tearing at the befallen banquet. Mouths used to scraps choking on steak. Getting their guts knitted as they squirm over each other to grasp some sashimi. Dripping saliva as if we’re sweat in the ruckus. Yeti crab pinch, as do isopods But get only mucus insulting their jaws. And they thought they helped to cut up the portions. Soon all that is left is a skeleton. Hanging in a museum for future generations to see. Once again, dust gathers, from bombed out sand. Erupting in the air as giants hit the ground. We may soon again see darkness fall. As the rayiys is skinned. But no tears are shed. We all cheer none the less.

Drawing things I cannot see, Listening, Keenly, Too the strange things, Coming from, the albino dressed pavement smoothed, Bedroom walls, Braille textures, slipping like termites, or a strange smell, dancing from the dusty old lady haired vent, on the ceiling, Braille raindrops, escaping from your, soul window sill, fog, gets in the room, and we light cigarettes, purple scented totem poled candles, with out near future, melting, and dripping on the wooden counter-top, which we dip our fingers into, sticky like petroleum, sticky like the sap from a forest broken snapped, tree limb, which we tasted, which we ran danced hollered and orgasmed, like the melting candle, like the sapped, broken kansas public tree limb, and i, took off your, orange dress that you stole, though only a few dollars, i called bonnie, you called me paradise, though we danced gleefully, in the slums snout snarling broken home windows, pot-holes,untied shoes, untied fathers, lovers planning paradise, inside the blue 80's oldsmobile, with the stereo turned low, low like the quiet hummingbird song, of making love, in the cold night, under trees, that was old, and had probably seen many lovers, come and go, as its Fall leaves grew wings, as its, winters balding scalp, scattered away, like a field of dandelions, or the birds, that flew from nests, only to fly south, or like wise boxcar boxcar dharma bums, sat on telephone wires, at the intersection, where two lovers planned paradise, in the back-seat, of a blue Oldsmobile, and the night, holy night, and i, **** mind wonderer without wings, or sad singer leather boots harmonica whiskey drinker, and Her, white as stars, dancing in a blind choreographed orchestra, in the sky, far, far, far, even the highway, has no exits, to see this performance, So i sit on a rock, smoking a cigarette, with a Fools smile, as I, watch beauty, from the Key-hole, that is, Solitude.

I was stupid and starved when I started; my feral fangs snarling and bared, only fit to be fed from a distance by a few brave souls showing they cared. So slowly by slow I grew human, so slowly by slow I grew strong. When I tried to repay all their kindness, "Pay it forward," they said, "move along." I can give only what I am given, small wisdom enough for the day; if you find something worthwhile for taking, that would mean more than poems can say.

Pay it forward
Claustrophobia confines me Noise is muted Time slows down The sound of my racing heart fills the air The world turns like a haunted merry-go-round And my sight blurs I gulp in stale air The smell of mass body odour stings my nose My palms are sweating Fellow humans beside me turn into snarling aliens My body shrieks at me to run But the ground grabs my feet with clawed fingers Panic is overwhelming common sense I am losing my mind A scream slowly rises to my throat DING The doors open One sigh of relief And my body gratefully flies out into freedom Never again

Claustrophobia
I sought satisfaction in stupid sheepishly and shallow strides. Scared subconsciously, I swallow and sustain substance for pseudo self esteem strengthening. I seemed of in service to slumber and stinging sadness, shots sank like ships, submerging into the sea of my swarthy stomach in seconds. I somewhat sympathies as a sailor, sweating, struggling and swimming in slipping sobriety saturated in my sulking style. Scanning swarms of serial swindlers, striking sculptures stances of self-doubt. I stammer in a storm of slurs, ******* down my safety, stopping myself at the stoop of the saloon I see a seductive silhouette staging the space. She stroke my sight, standing sanguine in scarlet, soul sold in high heels. The smoothest sculptures in seven square miles were subjugated into scree and I was ****** in submission. Stubborn staggering suitors, stand shaking silently as she is stopped by sharks stalking and snarling sycophantics. So straightforward in suggesting their secret starvation to strip sensations, seem by seem, like a sub-par **** cinema scene. They step and speak short. She smokes off, stranding the scree in smoldering slaughter. Its sad this soul-less sanctuary soaking up sorrows. So self inflicting, and so satisfyingly side splitting. She sported her spurned, scorned off into sadistic solitude and stained sticky stigma, sobbing to sleep. So spent from simple stocked, stored and supported senescence of ceremonial subjection of ****** status. I savior my sincerity, and stretched out of this strange stadium of stooges. So long scarlet sanguine I sang softly, as she stole my sight suspiciously in sync with hers. Sacrificial seconds split from smearing stolidity to sharing a smile. That's simple satisfaction, so I seen scripted in sitcoms and shows. Supporting sapiens in stasis to see sappy stunners on screen, to stare snoopy, as stabs and slashes strike socially into socialites of so called sanity and sovereignty. To sweetly pay salvage as slaves of soppy studio slander. Such is this sorry Saturday night, I am solidified in sedation.
