When we part
Shaded Lamp Jul 2014
I belong in a distant land
On an island off its coast
In a farmhouse neighboured by nothing
But angora goats and vegetable patches
Far away from the house
A crumbling barn lodging ravens
With a simple secret subterranean abode
Housing whisky laden shelves
A rusty candelabra
A favourite chair
Your favourite chair
My old oboe
And the spirit
Of
You

The parents
Shaded Lamp Jul 2014
There is a monk on the sofa
Celibate, thoughtful and sad
Thinking of his past life
Before he became a dad
Plumping up a feather pillow
Setting a beeping clock
In some old worn boxershorts
A toe poking out of a sock
His love upstairs grinding her teeth
She does every single night
He resigned himself to eternal sofa(ing)
It is just not worth the fight
The mundane months skulk on by
Each mimics dull October
How life was different four years ago
When he / they had been less sober
The only grinding done back then
Was her pelvis against his
How proudly she embraced nakedness
Back when life had fizz
He removes his holey socks and prays
To an imaginary goddess
That his wife can learn to love again
With or without her dress
His prayer remains unanswered tonight
He understands that he must wait
For she must learn to love herself again
Before she can change their fate.

Fall in love with baking
But understand these rules...
You will be burnt but it will be worth it
And
You will burn the occasional sponge that wasn't.
The humble effort that won't rise
CAN
be devoured with as much gusto
as any puffed up pastry,
And
Too much of the same cake
(how ever good it tastes)
Makes you lazy, boring and fat
If only life were as simple as cake

Shaded Lamp Jul 2014
I just spent a beautiful hour
Writing about the wine...
well it does not matter any more
It has now ****** off into an evil chip
Or an impossible to reach cloud
But the memory of writing it
Makes my heart sing loud-er than normal
Oh, how I long to recover
My Gewurztraminer verse
Slightly annoyed and tipsy

DEEP
Shaded Lamp Jul 2014
I used to need a submarine
to visit the dark depths of my soul
To where the bottom feeders feast
on the dead and feces from the shoal
A completely inhospitable, light-less,
savage, alien underworld
Where the spineless slimy sea cucumber
writhed, wriggled and curled.

Now I prefer to scuba dive my soul
or gaily use snorkel and flippers
Among a rich vivid abundance of life
Up and down the aqua big dippers
But I admit every now and then
at certain dark times of the year
I swim above that unforgiving trench
and can not hold back the tears

Shaded Lamp Jul 2014
It be a cursed blade that tongue of yours
with which you cut me
Electrocution therapy, flex- relax.
An ice cold palm with
Fingers of a white hot compass needle
Pointing me to Hell
Each of your ten demons tormenting me,
My torn limbs bleed
Punish me for observing myself
I deserve it
Choked, knotted, bruised and at your mercy
You command me.
Towering above with your heaving *******
You are my God
Your hair- bolts of lighting- your voice- thunder.
Accept my sacrifice.

Not Original
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
I stand weeping at the tombstone of Originality,

                                                                                   "Here lies Originality,
                                                                              Born 13.7 Billion years ago
                                                                                         with a Big Bang
                                                                              Died 400 million years later
                                                                                         with the first star"

Everything, yes everything that mutated from that
has merely been an evolution.
What is the use?
Originality is so very, very dead
It died before anything else
We can only make adjustments to what we already know. Be that in science, mathematics, music or prose.
Nothing is original.

The escapologist
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
Hanging upside down
He wriggled
And he struggled
Then he wriggled some more.
But no matter how he wriggled
Or how he was cheered and applauded
No matter how much he huffed
Puffed and blushed
There was no getting out
Of the straight jacket
Wriggle Wriggle
Struggle
The cheering turns to jeering
The clapping to back slapping
As he huffed and puffed
The jeering came to creshendo
The audience gasped for breath
As did the wriggler
Who wiggled
To his death
Ta daa!

Enough is enough

Our daughter asks for the umpteenth time when you will be home.
I just smile and say "not long now" whist staring at a docile phone.
This is only the forth time in six months that you have gone missing with no trace.
The first time you fell asleep in a strip bar
"On a work do" you amazing disgrace!
The second time you fell asleep at a party, the third you did the same.
Top marks for invented excuses, invention,  has never been your game.
So now, I sit here waiting, with our daughter and this phone.
Telling her not to worry and that her mummy will soon be home.

Beyond Blood and Weasels
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
Rippling down the stream
Of many peoples consciousness
An effervescent future life
Stripped of this abhorrent distress

A future filled with study
Free for each and every human being
A world with no false borders
A world with far less disagreeing

And a universal language
Forged with available technology
That translates in real time
Enhanced with anthropology

Giving us a precise understanding
Of how each other achieve solutions
A pragmatic communication
Circumnavigating ****** revolutions

We would calculate the earths resources
And how to evenly distribute them
Then we would dispose of pointless cash
Like ill people dispose of phlegm

Our centralised political weasels
That do far more harm than good
Would be replaced by microchips
Programmed to not be misunderstood

It is an interesting proposal
To those with a humane conscience
But to those smugly enjoying advantage
I guess it is annoying nonsense

So we must wait for millions to be displaced
For total world economic collapse
The greedy spoilt brats will listen then
Or will they continually relapse?
I am inspired by The Venus Project and Zeitgeist Movement. I am also utterly ashamed of how we act as a species to each other and our shared planet. There is hope!

Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
It is better to be lost
on an adventure
Than to know every detail
of where you have always been
Far greater the life
dappled with folly and success
than a personal career
safely sat aside in the shade
You, yes you are here for but an instant
Pick yourself up, dust yourself down
Life is too short for self pity and such
Yesterday was only a lesson
Today, well, today is real
Today you will take control
Today you will set yourself free
from the chains of self torment
Right here, right now!
Life will taste good from this moment
I can achieve because I believe
Nothing is real but me
Right here, right now!
Change!
Time to kick myself up the ***.

For Dad.
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
Bordered by an old fashioned picture frame
A man, curiously familiar, moustached, astute
With a smiling bride, his eyes aflame
And a brown "The Spy Who Loved Me" suit

This was the first "real" connection with him
Displayed on my grandparents window shelf
Some how I knew I was missing a limb
Some how I knew I wasn't entirely myself

Patches of my memories dwell in clusters
perhaps I am mentally impaired.
I remember going to Ghost Busters
I remember being really scared.

Shaking inside trying to be brave
ashamed to being frightened of ghouls.
But that film soon became a fave
just as did playing snooker and pool.

I am aware that I have not let him know
that whist every time I have nearly drowned.
An island of him has rose from the flow
and let my two feet again find the ground.

Also, that as I have moulded myself into a man
he has been an integral aspect of my design.
Thanks to him I can have an extraordinary tan
I love a pun, good whisky and being on time.

So lets heartily toast the bygone days
now we can laugh about the happy and sad.
And let's swirl a whisky each others way
Because when all said and done, your my Dad.

If it were a sport it would be golf
It could be any reindeer but Rudolf
If it were shop shelf it would stock bleach
next to self tan oil for the 2 weeks on the beach
If it were a weather it would be overcast
A time of day? It would be breakfast.
As an animal it would surely be a toad
That did not quite make the journey across the road
And in the middle of the road it remains
The middle of the road flows through its veins.
Come over some time.

Reflections.
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
Said the mirror to the poet
"Can you really over think?"
Said the whisky to lonely
"Can you really over drink?"

The coffin creaks to the undertaker
"Are you satisfied with your work?"
She grimly replies to the casket
"Well, it has certain unique perks."

The earth sighs to the human population
"When will this violation eventually cease?"
We ignore her pathetic mutterings
And order "production must be increased!"

The poet sheds a crocodile tear
As the shadow of insanity looms
The lonely empties another bottle
Staggers back from the shop and resumes

The undertaker makes final plans
For her own elaborate swan song
A sun drenched plot of gravel reserved
Beneath which she will soon belong

And the Earth despairs at her children
She did not raise them to be this way
And just like the forlorn undertaker
She is also planning her final day.
Feel free to offer suggestions on how I might improve this. I am but a novice.

How Civilized.
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
Oh, how we strut about the world
We, the civilized population
Unsatisfied until we've unfurled
Blankets of our cultivation

How proud we are of the machines
That gauge and plunder the earths crust
To farm by artificial means
Deemed by the "uncivilized" as unjust

The "uncivilized", those wayward tribes
That naively worship this blue globe
Need alcohol and such like prescribed
To adjust malfunctioning temporal lobes

Can they not observe our contentment
And our superior living standard
They squat and rant with some resentment
We are progressive, they have meandered

I wonder when those of tribal birth
Will mature and see we've got it right
And that their unkempt patch of earth
Will make a fine farm or building site

Or better still, once they're packing
Up their dwellings and  possessions
We can begin some civilised fracking
With our governmental concessions

That's what separates us from them
I hope you have now realised
It is a government controlled by business
That makes us so very civilized
I just despair when observing our propensity to consume like kids locked in a sweet shop.

Common
Shaded Lamp Jun 2014
Commonly used as an insult
But I am left questioning
is "belonging equally to,
or shared alike by,
two or more or all in question"
A bad thing?
Or is
"belonging equally to an entire community,
nation, or culture"
Somehow distasteful?
Ahh, then it must be, that being
"widespread; general; ordinary"
Should be absolutely be avoided, right?
Or am I lacking common sense?

to create a completely separate

and as our

So, you, yes you

For sale, there really was only one dream
It was sold to us through Thatcher
Star wars, Magnum P.I. and The A.team.

Now that dream is old and dusty
And the world looks for something new
Will it come from India, China, Brazil
Or will it come from the shaky E.U.

Or will, as I hope, there be choice
For my daughter and her 4 year old clique
Will she choose the American dream
Or will she dismiss it as a kitsch antique.
