21st Century Slavery
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
21st century slavery: Shayn Powell

Take a look around,
It’s 2018.
What do you see?
Everything looks fine,
People striding in glee?

Look hard for it may
Be a mystery,
That we’re living through
21st century slavery.

We claim these are
The lands of the free.
It’s a fib, that’s not at
All what it seems.

Because if it were
the land of the free
than Martin Luther King may
never have had his dream.

There wouldn’t have
Been a march for
Freedom in 1963.
And Mr King wouldn’t
Have lost his life
For standing up in
What everyone
Should've believed.

Take a look around,
It’s 2018.
What do you see?
Everything looks fine,
People striding in glee?

Look hard for it may
Be a mystery,
That were living through
21st century slavery.

America, “land of the free”
Were fine we claim,
living in prosperity.
“Everyone’s equal”,
You’ve heard it too, How silly
Don’t you agree?

My best friend
Rolled his window up
when he saw a policeman.
It’s sad, But this is the
reality we live in.

“We’re equal” but we
Strip kids from their dreams
Because they were brought here
Against their will illegally.

Have some leniency,
Then again you’re
changing their scenery.
How can you do that
So easily?

And what’s this ****
we learned in history?
Jim Crow laws?
Thank god those are gone.
Or so we thought

You’re not sneaky America,
Mass incarceration is
Nothing but a plot
For a group of minorities
To be 2nd class citizens
To us all.

That’s evil that should leave
everyone appalled.

It’s time for a call
For action.
All this arrogance
Has left us distracted
From what our nation
claims to practice.
Because

Take a look around,
It’s 2018.
What do you see?
Everything’s NOT fine,
People AREN'T striding in glee.

Really look for it’s
Not hard to see
That were living through
21st century slavery.

Yours truly,

That worried white kid
Who lives in a society
That’s unruly.
Witnessed a buddy of mine roll his window up at a stoplight when he saw a police officer at the same stoplight and I wrote this up shortly after.

Request out of Reach ..
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
As you ask I see your fear, your complexion turned pink.
I wonder what you think, asking me to make it all easy.
Foolish human with a request out of reach, I’ve watched you
From the second you breathed,
And this evil spewing from your heart is hard to believe.
I’ve watched over the years, your smile has disappeared from ear to ear
And flipped opposite like heaven and hell.
I can feel your sense of disdain, and how you scurry for your shell.
I’d compel you to find yourself, But that’s for you to seek.
Not to be slaughtered like sheep.
You are a foolish human, and your request for death is denied.
I’ve decided against it. it’s not your time.
Not sure this would work.

Gremlin
Shayn Powell May 2018
At first, I was
blown away,
**** I thought, this
girl is cool,
come my way.

A dime in the
eyes of Shayn.
This isn't a game,
you came onto me
now your ex has
messaged so you
up and leave?

**** a Gremlin,
You're a beast.

A savage at
the very least.
You have no
respect for anybody
but yourself.
I'm not the one little
girl i'll make you
life a living hell.

College this,
college that,
blah blah,
It's clear you spoke
our of your ***.
I wont lose sleep
over it though, you're
just a glimmer in my past.

in my eye...
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
Look me in the eye
Don’t leave me surprised
I wanna know what you're about,
Give me a second of your time

******* away
Your vibe excites
Show me the light
Don’t leave me astray

I want you
Your beauty invites
Show me around, show me the sights
You’re someone i can get into.
Let’s get lost in time, the beauty
In you resembles the northern lights.

Flashy, colorful and fun
Invite everyone,
There’s a little in you
For anyone.
Look them in the eye
If they’re worthy
To confront.

Stone Cold Sober..
Shayn Powell May 2018
Cold morning,
I roll over, sad
And mourning.
I just want to lay here,
But I need coffee,
Something warming
And something sober,
Like black coffee.
Stone cold sober.

Strong taste to my buds,
Bitter but sweet,
Without my coffee
I’ll roam around, lost,
Looking beat.
Listening to the
beans roast and
The drip in my ***,
It sounds exactly
Like the drops hitting
My window.

It’s ready.
Hearing the pour,
A small waterfall
Into a cup, the splashes,
The aroma, something
That I can’t get over.
My first sip, it’s hot and bitter
But delicious nonetheless,
It’s perfect for the early bird,
They always say it,
They get the worm.

Until next time
Empty cup. Half a day
wait and another cold
Morning on it’s way,
Sit here and wait
Until I wake up,
For another sober cup.
Everyone can probably relate.

Water and Dirt
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
My proudest work comes from water and dirt
Artistry and patience is my quirk
With a bucket and tools my options are endless
Small vessel, medium vessel, large vessel

My soft hands feel with the clay
My steady hands become the clay
Keeping the vessel together and contained
My vessel is a blossom sprouted from water and dirt
This poem was the very 1st that I have ever written. i decided to write about something I love and thats pottery, i hope that you enjoy!

Why ..
Shayn Powell May 2018
Confused at first
I was,  confusion
Spewed  because
We match,
It’s a fact.

Not going to lie
I was pretty sad
In all honesty
A part of me
Didn’t understand

Why I ask
Not wanting to accept
But I must
I know you’re
Not leaving me
In the dust.

Because When I look
At your eyes
They lift a smile
On my face
From one ear
To the other
Your beauty stings
Like the blunt you
Put to my neck
It makes me shudder
From top to bottom
And every curve, twist and turn
There’s no secrets
I wish not to uncover

What i’ve got
To do is handle
These emotions
And steer.
And realize I
Can’t be your, in
This time, lover.

For time is against
Our side, with
Life around
The corner,
The stress from
Figuring it out
And a Relationship
will leave us
bowling over.

Why I wonder,
You said it yourself,
I’m so effortlessly
Your type.
It saddens me but
I understand.

Maybe in time
In Fact, you told me two years from
This day to ask you a question.
You made it a promise,
Leaving me nervous,
In two years,
I’ll find you and fulfil
What I promised.

breeze and warm light..
Shayn Powell May 2018
I could only see from beneath her wanderous eye

Even from afar she’s still in sight
I long for her breeze and warm light

Clashing like fire and ice
Too much for me to grasp

I feel a ripple and hear your sound
Like one of a paradiddle all around

Approaching softly

Out of her ken until again
She lost me.
Beauty beneath the eye.

Listen
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
Listen, as you may miss.
And later unable to reminisce.
For a lifetime of knowledge and wisdom
May be lost in your personal abyss.
listen to your surroundings and observe what you can while soaking in all the knowledge in front of you.

Mountain..
Shayn Powell May 2018
Step by step, uphill
Then down, striving
To the top, this is
The final countdown.
Seeing the end, exhausted
And holding back a
Mental breakdown.
Blood, sweat and tears
The lack of oxygen,
Leaving me stumbling
So high in the atmosphere.

As I climb I break
through my greatest fears,
This is a war with myself,
A crucible greater than
No other.  Climbing higher
My eyes begin to open,
Everything is clear.
The end is near.

This place is holy,
Something I can’t bare,
As if I observe my
Every move with my
Subconscious.
I’ll leave here free
Of toxins, spiritually found,
Sinless and Flawless.
This poem is about finding yourself and the hardships that tend to come with it, as the process may be difficult for most people, just keep climbing, find your personal biases, stand by what you believe in. make a difference first with yourself before trying to be something else other than what you are meant to be. This can hard, and I wanted to put that in words.

Feeling
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
That feeling,
So soft yet so harsh.
Your love is hard to punch through,
Like water and starch.
That feeling, we've all felt it or will. I hope that you enjoy!

Something to think about ..
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
I sit and ponder

My hip and knees hurt like no other

You ever wonder
About your age?
Growing old,
Unable to escape

I do
It’s frightening
My emotions
Spiraling

Think about this
Its enlightening

Yes, we grow old
But today is the
Youngest  i’ll ever be.

That’s something to think
about If you ask me.
Growing old and never getting younger, think about it and ponder.

In the Mist
Shayn Powell Apr 2018
In the mist
In the mist

Past the trees.
In the distance,
There you ly
As your
body glistens

In the mist
In the mist

You lay softly.
Brown hair,
And perfect skin.

Your beauty is heavenly.

Beauty that you never see.

So beautiful,
I long for you terribly

In the mist
In the mist

I approach
While shaken
For it’s too
Hard to resist.

In the mist
In the mist

I approach
With a stomach
Feeling like one of
a clenched fist.

In the mist
In the mist

I approach
Slowly
But stopped
In the midst.

In the mist
In the mist

Frozen.

Unable to move.

I shouldn’t attempt.

In the mist.
Enjoy.

the lows..
Shayn Powell May 2018
Hanging my head heavy,
like a boulder.
Sick and tired of you,
So I get on with life
With a cold shoulder
And a blunt between
My middle and index fingers.
I don’t have time
To listen to your reasons.
Your breath smells,
Like Grey Goose, it lingers.
Man get it together because
Were losing you,
And we don’t know what to do.
You’re drifting away,
Keep treating yourself
Like this, you’ll end up
6 below one day.
I need you to explain
Just what it is
Playing with your brain,
‘Cuz if you keep acting this way,
Someone’s gonna
Pop your head like
President JFK.
Here,
I’ve got a blunt
To ease the pain,
Take a hit of it, and maybe you’ll
Remember who you were,
Maybe our names.

Taking a hit to alleviate the pain.
Take a hit, my **** taste like
A souffle.
sleeper green, you’ll wake up
In a daze,
I know what you’re
Dealing with is only a phase,
So show me a glimpse of you,
A replay of the good ole days,
Before we lost you in all of this craze.

Stop with the delays, the betrays and cliches,
It’s all a game that we don’t want to play
Because you did it to yourself,
You left your life a maze with no
Clear way out, so don’t drop your head and pout
Your sorrows away.
It’s a hard knock life
For those of your kind, you watched
Your life fade away, decline,
With only a glimmer left to shine.
We’re at the end of this road,
The ball is in your court. Tell me,
What are you going to to this time?
Whatcha Gonna do?

Marijuana

Marijuana - Shayn P. and Blake H.

Shayn P:

Hey buddy,
you look down.
Let me show
You the way,
Let me show
You around.

I got a little something
Called marijuana.
Here, take some
Do you wanna?

Prepare to be amazed
This **** will leave
you dazed.
From the second
You take a hit
**** naps for days.

This is gas, $10 a gallon
Take a whiff, see what i’m sellin’
Hope you’re ready for ****
To be apart of your pallet.
Here, I  just rolled this spliff,
Take a hit of this.
Sit back and relax,
You look a little stiff.

Blake H:

I got you on this ****,
You’ll be craving it for days.
You’ll reach into your wallet
And realize you can’t pay.

Can’t pay for your ******* addiction
Your friends are scared to ask if
You’re still christian.
They’ve seen the monster you’ve become.
Whenever they see you, they run.

Shayn P:

Look at you,
You can’t come back?
I warned you buddy, dip your toe
And it’s a wrap.

You want more?
Try this instead.
Since marijuana has
Become a bore.
Take this powder my guy,
It’s for you to snort.

Blake H:

I know how you’ll feel, the adrenaline rushing to your brain,
Forget the powder, shoot this up your vein.
Feel the power, feel the high
You never knew what happened to that one guy.

I’ll tell you what happened, you killed him.
You didn’t know what happened, you had no memory.
It was the most brutal ****** of this century.

Shayn P:

It’s nasty quite honestly,
It’s something you can’t unsee.
Walk away, and try not to think
About the ones that lost
It all in a blink.
A fun little thing my friend and I did. We were given the topic marijuana and we both took turns switching off writing something creating this little project. Enjoy!
