I asked a beautiful boy
to write my birthday on my wrist.

I passed him a purple pen

We sat like this

And you know what I asked him?

I asked a beautiful boy

Fuck Gravity
Shylah S Mar 2015
The happy tune
makes me want to fly.

To sing, and dance
my way into the night sky.

The crisp melody
makes me want to smile,

to laugh.
run away to magical places.

I wonder why I am still here?

I open my eyes,
and see the boring, lacklustre world again.
Or so I think?

I slyly glance your way
and see your warm, chocolate-coloured eyes gaze back at me,

and I realize **I am exactly where I want to be.
What's with me and boys that love music?

Inspiration
Shylah S Nov 2014
When someone asks me
"Who inspires you?"

I think to myself
"What a silly question."

It is not only famous, accomplished people that inspire me,
which is what they would expect as an answer.

its
the stars
the grass
the boy who smiled
the mother picking up a hurt child
the leaves turning brilliant colours in the fall
the young woman who wasn't afraid to tell her story
the old man who felt the spark of persistence
the happiness of the simple pleasures
the smell of laundry
the living mud
the moon

The millions of great people not recognized for their outstanding feats,
but that's okay.

As one of my favourite authors put it when speaking about people who had drive, dreams, inspiration, and grit

**"Great men and great women--
Some famous,
most not..."

Cringe
Shylah S Oct 2014
Out of boredom,
I open up an old novel I was writing at the age of 13.

I remember thinking I was a brilliant writer,
This book is publishing material.

I read it today and
Cringe
At
Every
Word.

Filled with teenage angst, raging hormones and everything in between.

Why did I think this passed,
For writing?!

Well at least I improved.
But I don't like the fact that,
In few years,
I will cringe at writing I did today.

Hell,
I was reading a poem I wrote last year,
It became trending,
And I think "how?"
Is this even worthy for a like?

Well, I can say I grew.
I wish it was a paper manuscript so I can burn it :P

Je n'aime pas français

J'ai apprendre le français.

J'apprends les mots inutile.

Quand vais-je utiliser,

"Je regrette, mais restaurant est complet"

ou

"L'addition s'il vous plait."

Ils sont inutilisable!

Quand vais-je utiliser

etre, avoir, aller,....

Pourquoi sont-ils irrégulier?!?

Pourquoi peux-je mémoriser tout la grammaire,

présent, passé composé,  futur simple, impératif

et beaucoup d'autres.

But people tell me,

English is more complicated than French.

Sigh.

I don't like french.

Headfirst
Shylah S Aug 2014
A thick foam barrier blocks us all,
from a scene of,
illusioned perfect
something we all strive for.
But few achieve.

I want it,
I need it,
I can taste it,
feel it.

I stick a hand in,
a foot.
***** like quicksand.

But I try
"It's so close"
"Just a step away."
Hear happy, twinkling voices
on the up side.

But
too afraid
to put my head in first.

Too afraid
I will not be able
to breathe.

So close to the border,
we all live.
But not quite in.

No--I will not be passive, content with such a life!

So I take a breath,
and dive in.

**Headfirst.
Thoughts occur in my heads, that turn themselves into poems.

After Cinderella
Shylah S May 2014
What happens
after Cinderella
is able to be with her prince?

After her stepmother gone
her stepsisters vanquished
all obstacles gone ever since?

Did they grow old
lavished in the kingdom's wealth
and love each other forever?

Or did the handsome prince
grow bored
and find another beautiful woman to endeavour?
Shylah S Apr 2014
Or, at least what you might think.
Judgement hurts in too many ways to count.

I stand in the local thrift market
looking for trinkets and such with my father.
He came here to look for vintage picture frames,
to put up on our pastel coloured walls.
He brought me to be a translator,
of his broken english.

I see the looks some give him,
but I am proud of my father.
And mad at how our society works.
Looking at my father you think,
he probably only knows his own mother tongue,
no education,
bad manners,
had lived in poverty before.

But you are wrong.

An Italian man sits by this booth,
selling picture frames.
I point and tell my father, and he walks over.

"How much for frames?"

I taught him how to say that well enough.
The Italian man says fluently,
"$40 a piece,"
but behind it you can hear a faint Italian accent.

My father hears this and his face lights up,
and he replies in Italian,
"Great, but can you lower it to $30. For me, man?"

The man seemed shocked to see a dark-skinned man,
speaks such fluent Italian.
The man got up with a smile on his face,
and told my father,
"Man, I was born in Italy, but you speak it better than me,"

My dad laughed.

Next time you see,
a strange man,
struggling with his english,
stop to think,
he might be able to speak to you in,
German. Italian. French. And in a tiny bit of Spanish.
And of course, his mother tongue.
He might have learned the culinary arts,
in a world-renounced school.
He might be able to do anything.
And he might even be a little more impressive,
than you will ever be.

Judgement hurts.
But all it takes is you to stop it.

December
Shylah S Mar 2014
Spin-off of November by Thomas Hood*

White field-- white snow!
Everything withers--nothing grows!
No flora-- no fauna--an ice tundra where no one goes.
A ghost of a memory-- a vivid flash of pain
Vision in white-- not a thing to see

But no, hidden--where could it be?
Kisses, hushes, heard in the dark,
the world is different you see, when white covers bark.
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No trees--no leaves

Apple
Shylah S Mar 2014
People are like apples picked from a tree,
The beautiful ones with no imperfections are picked first,
but that makes them bitter and unripe.

The bruised and dented are picked last,
but that makes them sweet and delicious.

But beauty is just a perception.
The second you bite into the sweet but imperfect apple,
you realize it is more beautiful than all other apples combined.
Beauty
is
just a
perception.

So don't hide your dents and perfect imperfections.
If you do, you may become bitter inside.
Beautiful is not a definition of you,
but you are the definition of **beautiful.

Do you feel me?
Leaning in for a lipstick stained kiss,

Shylah S May 2013
First day of 8th grade ***-ed class,
Sitting awkwardly beside you in my seat.

Closing our math binders in sync,
The health teacher strides in.

"Take out your folders class!" a loud voice booms,
I scramble to find it.

Taking out blank paper to write notes,
The teacher launching into a fast paced lecture.

"Thistopicisveryimportantblahblahnolaughingblah--"
Losing track of the words I stop and look to your sheet and copy,

To only see you have written one word--your name.
You notice me looking as I smirk at you.

I try to hold in the giggles,
Even though it isn't funny.
You reacting the same way.

I look up and catch your eye and I feel my tummy doing turns,
Why do you do this to me?

You look like your blushing but I couldn't tell as we both looked away,
Do I make you feel the same way?

We mirror movements without noticing it,
Life isn't making much sense to me.

I slump in my seat already bored of this lesson and let my hands hang loose,
I then realize how close to you I am, your warm breath blowing down my neck.

I can feel you look at me,
Me wavering under your gaze.

You do something surprising,
You slip your fingers through mine under the desk,
Hidden away from view.

I feel myself panicking my breath coming out faster,
Blushing like a cherry red tomato.

I readjust my grip reassuringly squeezing your hand in a friendly gesture.
They say your first love never lasts.

But a girl can dream.
Shylah S May 2013
I fell in love with your eyes.

The sparkle that I see behind them,
The irises coloured a deep chocolate
Made fresh from a cocoa tree.

The smile that goes with it,
Lighting up a million stars.

The tantalizing look they give me,
Every time they catch my gaze.

Today,
I realize.
I fell in love with your eyes.

Fate.
Shylah S Apr 2013
I met you at the chance,
A coincidence,
But I never believed in those.

I learned to believe in fate.

The connection between us instantly clicked,
Like a cord to a power plug,
Like a button on a blouse,
Like rain to the ground.

We talked and talked and talked and tal---
till the teacher told me to stop.

One day in my favorite class--Art,
I was listening to my music and drawing trying to ignore the feelings I was beginning to feel,
Forgetting you existed---forgetting you changed my world.
But your voice drowned my music with a simple question,
"What are you listening to?"
Figuring out a reply,
"Just some random song, its really old, like 2003---"
Stopping myself before I start blathering,
"Come'on, what song is it?" you say, with a big smile on your face.
What if he makes fun of my music? What if he hates me after I show him?
But without having to choose, I hear your voice again interrupting my thoughts
My iPod in your hand and a simple reply,
"I love this song"
I take out my left earphone and pass it too you silently,
and we sit like this, both of us dazed in the thought of---
This one is one of my longest poems, and I just had to post it.

Missing You
Shylah S Apr 2013
The sky blends with colours white and blue
And my hands clench at the thought of missing you,
The dew-covered grass brushes lightly against my skin
Maybe I can lose to the sun and the sun can win
All my emotions trapped in my head
It fills me with even more dread

Maybe the sky will be again blue
When it is not thinking of missing you
Sadness is a weird thing.
