Are you like this to everyone?
Or am I special?

I've got too many questions
too afraid to ask.
Shylah S Aug 2016
I'm flushed from the novelty
I'm elated from the passion

you wake me better than coffee
you sweeten me better than sugar

your words tug at my heart
your whispers short my circuit

your touch sends sparks through my fingertips
your voice rolls off of me like honey

I'm slowly going insane
I'm quickly falling

for you.
For someone special.

What happens
after Cinderella
is able to be with her prince?

After her stepmother gone
her stepsisters vanquished
all obstacles gone ever since?

Did they grow old
lavished in the kingdom's wealth
and love each other forever?

Or did the handsome prince
grow bored
and find another beautiful woman to endeavour?

Or, at least what you might think.
Judgement hurts in too many ways to count.

I stand in the local thrift market
looking for trinkets and such with my father.
He came here to look for vintage picture frames,
to put up on our pastel coloured walls.
He brought me to be a translator,
of his broken english.

I see the looks some give him,
but I am proud of my father.
And mad at how our society works.
Looking at my father you think,
he probably only knows his own mother tongue,
no education,
bad manners,
had lived in poverty before.

But you are wrong.

An Italian man sits by this booth,
selling picture frames.
I point and tell my father, and he walks over.

"How much for frames?"

I taught him how to say that well enough.
The Italian man says fluently,
"$40 a piece,"
but behind it you can hear a faint Italian accent.

My father hears this and his face lights up,
and he replies in Italian,
"Great, but can you lower it to $30. For me, man?"

The man seemed shocked to see a dark-skinned man,
speaks such fluent Italian.
The man got up with a smile on his face,
and told my father,
"Man, I was born in Italy, but you speak it better than me,"

My dad laughed.

Next time you see,
a strange man,
struggling with his english,
stop to think,
he might be able to speak to you in,
German. Italian. French. And in a tiny bit of Spanish.
And of course, his mother tongue.
He might have learned the culinary arts,
in a world-renounced school.
He might be able to do anything.
And he might even be a little more impressive,
than you will ever be.

Judgement hurts.
But all it takes is you to stop it.

I found a little ray of sunlight
that was here the entire time.

It was shining right in front of me
and now I can call it mine.

It makes me wonder
how I hadn't noticed it before.

Maybe it was hiding--
it probably was.

But guess what?
I found it.
I found her.
It took a while, but now
we have all the time
in the entire ******* world.

A little ray of light.
My little ray of sunshine.

once there was a boy
he wanted to be a man
but he misunderstood
he saw these self-proclaimed "men"
stoic big strong
sweep a lady off their feet
smooth as butter on a frying pan
he played dressup
crisp suits and hats

I fear he failed to realize though
he was a man
in fact the manliest of them all

a mark of a man is not
how many women swoon in his presence
the way he walks
the depth in his voice

it's his compassion
to be truly himself
to love fully
of pure heart
for that is the man to rule all men

But every year I try for you

Why?
Because I love you.

People are like apples picked from a tree,
The beautiful ones with no imperfections are picked first,
but that makes them bitter and unripe.

The bruised and dented are picked last,
but that makes them sweet and delicious.

But beauty is just a perception.
The second you bite into the sweet but imperfect apple,
you realize it is more beautiful than all other apples combined.
Beauty
is
just a
perception.

So don't hide your dents and perfect imperfections.
If you do, you may become bitter inside.
Beautiful is not a definition of you,
but you are the definition of **beautiful.

Out of boredom,
I open up an old novel I was writing at the age of 13.

I remember thinking I was a brilliant writer,
This book is publishing material.

I read it today and
Cringe
At
Every
Word.

Filled with teenage angst, raging hormones and everything in between.

Why did I think this passed,
For writing?!

Well at least I improved.
But I don't like the fact that,
In few years,
I will cringe at writing I did today.

Hell,
I was reading a poem I wrote last year,
It became trending,
And I think "how?"
Is this even worthy for a like?

Well, I can say I grew.
I wish it was a paper manuscript so I can burn it :P

Spin-off of November by Thomas Hood*

White field-- white snow!
Everything withers--nothing grows!
No flora-- no fauna--an ice tundra where no one goes.
A ghost of a memory-- a vivid flash of pain
Vision in white-- not a thing to see

But no, hidden--where could it be?
Kisses, hushes, heard in the dark,
the world is different you see, when white covers bark.
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No trees--no leaves
December.

Whispering soft words in your ear,
Do you hear me?
Intertwining my fingers through yours,
Do you feel me?
Leaning in for a lipstick stained kiss,
Do you taste me?
Spritzing rose perfume in the crevice of my neck,
Do you smell me?
Scribbling words against the creamy pages,
Do you see me?
Understanding my every thought, word and touch,
**Do you love me?

The ideas I come up with during class.
Shylah S Apr 2015
Every time I think of your face
I smile
like an idiot
a big silly grin
and it happens in the awkwardest of places
people look at me
"Is she okay?"

I don't care
please
make me smile everyday
Shylah S Apr 2013
I met you at the chance,
A coincidence,
But I never believed in those.

I learned to believe in fate.

The connection between us instantly clicked,
Like a cord to a power plug,
Like a button on a blouse,
Like rain to the ground.

We talked and talked and talked and tal---
till the teacher told me to stop.

One day in my favorite class--Art,
I was listening to my music and drawing trying to ignore the feelings I was beginning to feel,
Forgetting you existed---forgetting you changed my world.
But your voice drowned my music with a simple question,
"What are you listening to?"
Figuring out a reply,
"Just some random song, its really old, like 2003---"
Stopping myself before I start blathering,
"Come'on, what song is it?" you say, with a big smile on your face.
What if he makes fun of my music? What if he hates me after I show him?
But without having to choose, I hear your voice again interrupting my thoughts
My iPod in your hand and a simple reply,
"I love this song"
I take out my left earphone and pass it too you silently,
and we sit like this, both of us dazed in the thought of---
This one is one of my longest poems, and I just had to post it.
Shylah S Sep 2016
Dear Shayla
my dear sweet beautiful woman
your sweet voice is like honey
after hours it still sounds lovely
such an angelic voice in such a magnificent human
I love every inch of you
I love kissing your whole body
while playing with you naughtily
my love it’s such a wonderful view
just watching you
I am writing this poem
to show you how much I appreciate
that chance you gave me to date
the most beautiful poem-worthy woman in my life
I love you

dear my wonderful sweet man
your words bring the widest smile to my face
I couldn't help but giggle and sigh
dating a poet was the greatest choice
I could ever make
your words remind me of your touch
of how you taste
let's spin pages upon books of our love
how life wouldn't feel the same without us
not hearing your voice whisper to me everyday
thank you my darling prince
for showing me what it's like to be loved
and for what it means
*I love you

The happy tune
makes me want to fly.

To sing, and dance
my way into the night sky.

The crisp melody
makes me want to smile,

to laugh.
run away to magical places.

I wonder why I am still here?

I open my eyes,
and see the boring, lacklustre world again.
Or so I think?

I slyly glance your way
and see your warm, chocolate-coloured eyes gaze back at me,

and I realize **I am exactly where I want to be.
What's with me and boys that love music?
Shylah S Aug 2014
A thick foam barrier blocks us all,
from a scene of,
illusioned perfect
something we all strive for.
But few achieve.

I want it,
I need it,
I can taste it,
feel it.

I stick a hand in,
a foot.
***** like quicksand.

But I try
"It's so close"
"Just a step away."
Hear happy, twinkling voices
on the up side.

But
too afraid
to put my head in first.

Too afraid
I will not be able
to breathe.

So close to the border,
we all live.
But not quite in.

No--I will not be passive, content with such a life!

So I take a breath,
and dive in.

**Headfirst.
Thoughts occur in my heads, that turn themselves into poems.

Some go in search
thinking they have no other forms
for hollow happiness

yet they are surrounded
by the beauty and "happy"
yet they search
for hollow happiness

when will this
fruitless
unsustainable quest end?
Only sentenced to the worst
a never-ending battle
for hollow happiness

So maybe its time to open your eyes

stop being so blind to this beautiful world

and find real happiness.
Little rant of the day.

I fell in love with your eyes.

The sparkle that I see behind them,
The irises coloured a deep chocolate
Made fresh from a cocoa tree.

The smile that goes with it,
Lighting up a million stars.

The tantalizing look they give me,
Every time they catch my gaze.

Today,
I realize.
I fell in love with your eyes.

I hope you look back and smile

at the millions of happy memories
at the inspiring people you've met
at the laughter you've shared with others
at the amount of care and love you've felt
at the kind words you've shared
at the little things that make this world great

I hope you look forward and realize

how many extraordinary things are going to happen
how many new seeds will be planted
how many brilliant things you will achieve
how many stories will be shared
how many dreams will be reality
how many things make this life worth living

I hope you keep moving forward.

no, I'm not talking about the ones with big noses
or greasy hair

not the ones with bad breath
or round bellies

no, I just like them raw
a little broken, a little sad

the ones with scars
a story to tell

I sure know how to pick em' you might say
but I'd never give them up any day

a whole adventure in a person like the outdoors
one with canyons and mountains he would let me explore
only ugly guys give themselves all at once
no parts hidden, everything is exposed

vulnerability is thought to be a weakness but in reality it's bold

I like ugly guys.
So go out there and be real, often we hide because we fear getting hurt. But in that fear we miss out on the world, we miss out on living, and worst of all, love. So even if we may get bruised, get to the lowest of the low, you'll one day stumble upon something that embraces you as you are, something that cherishes your ugliness unconditionally, something that inspires you to be better, whether that be a passion, a person, or something as simple as a smile. Is it really worth hiding if you miss on the chance to experience that?

Edit: I am very grateful to everyone who took the time to read my work and am in disbelief a piece of mine chosen as the daily pick for the very first time! This community is amazing :)

I love the sparkle in your eye
The bridge of your nose
The curve of your palms
The shy stride of your legs
The adorable smile of yours
The way you look at me.
I see.

I love your laugh
The way you slyly touch my shoulder
Or give an excuse to touch my hand
The way you whisper to me
The jokes that only we seem to understand
The shy looks you give me out of the corner of your eyes
I totally see.

I completely and truthfully see.

I come back inside
cold from the windy winter day
worst day to wear a short sleeve
but
you know about my bad decisions

I sit down
hands, face and feet numb

"My hands are freezing!"

I rub them together
no warmth

You watch me
suddenly
grab my hand
interlock our fingers

my heart stops
I cease to breathe
from the cold
or you
I'm not sure

You laugh
I look down

I interlocked my fingers wrong
How did I fail so terribly?

When someone asks me
"Who inspires you?"

I think to myself
"What a silly question."

It is not only famous, accomplished people that inspire me,
which is what they would expect as an answer.

its
the stars
the grass
the boy who smiled
the mother picking up a hurt child
the leaves turning brilliant colours in the fall
the young woman who wasn't afraid to tell her story
the old man who felt the spark of persistence
the happiness of the simple pleasures
the smell of laundry
the living mud
the moon

The millions of great people not recognized for their outstanding feats,
but that's okay.

As one of my favourite authors put it when speaking about people who had drive, dreams, inspiration, and grit

**"Great men and great women--
Some famous,
most not..."

I want freedom

I want the freedom to choose
make choices without superficial consquences
leap in a cage with no bars created by unjustified morals
open my ears something I was never quite allowed to hear

I want the freedom to feel
the trivial pressured guilt washed away by the sounds of laughter
staring into the abyss of a lover's eyes without needing to check if his skin was as brown as mine
open my heart to ideas once only spoken in ***** whispers and frowns

I want the freedom to go
walk drunkenly in the ghettos hand in hand with friends
impromptu trips with no questions asked no "who, what, when, where, and why?"
open my eyes to a world hidden behind dusty shutters and broken blinds

I want freedom

it seems so easy to say
the idea of freedom out-weighing the cons
yet I'm afraid to make the hard choice.

J'ai apprendre le français.

J'apprends les mots inutile.

Quand vais-je utiliser,

"Je regrette, mais restaurant est complet"

ou

"L'addition s'il vous plait."

Ils sont inutilisable!

Quand vais-je utiliser

etre, avoir, aller,....

Pourquoi sont-ils irrégulier?!?

Pourquoi peux-je mémoriser tout la grammaire,

présent, passé composé,  futur simple, impératif

et beaucoup d'autres.

But people tell me,

English is more complicated than French.

Sigh.

I don't like french.

I mean, "Je n'aime pas français"
Sorry, sorry a little rant about learning french. I have a final test coming up. Also if there are any mistake, please tell. My french needs a little help.

I scream and shout over your shoulder
10 decibels too loud yet it's like it never reached your ears, not a single noise
not even the sound of the truth
can't help but wonder
Do you hear me?

take comfort in the fact no scars, no marks were left on my skin, only salty tears
I tell myself sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me
its all a lie protecting myself, telling myself it's okay
Do you feel me?

choke back tears did it really happen if you can't see it?
too many questions dancing in my head, this won't happen again sometimes we all get out of control right
kisses mean nothing, can't even apologize, am I that worthless?
Do you taste me?

making endless excuses I believe, just to remember that the only affirmation of my pain is locked up in the twisted vault of my memories
still wear your favourite red dress and rose perfume only time you're ever happy
Do you smell me?

other days it's like I'm not even there, out of sight, out of mind, just a distant thought within you but you have to remember that I see you!
I see all of you!
like a ghost or I'm invisible I start to float away
Do you see me?

wasted time, regret, a death sentence I condemned
too many questions maybe this is the end

The sky blends with colours white and blue
And my hands clench at the thought of missing you,
The dew-covered grass brushes lightly against my skin
Maybe I can lose to the sun and the sun can win
All my emotions trapped in my head
It fills me with even more dread

Maybe the sky will be again blue
When it is not thinking of missing you
Sadness is a weird thing.

I will meet the "right" person
in one who constantly
surprises me
In a good way :)

Dreams* *-> a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person's mind during sleep.

My dreams aren't dreams.

They are wishes.

I want them to come true,

I want to put them in action,

but
I'm
scared
sorry
disappointed
