Shotguns
Cannot whisper
Until it's too late to
Save ourselves from that overwhelming
Shout
Modified cinquain.
Spenser Bennett May 2016
Brown hair, wild eyes
Tan skin, high rise
Cheekbones

I keep asking myself the same questions
And I never answer with the same sentence
That's what you get with depth over distance
That's what I get for trying to tame a tempest

Velvet voice, soft hands
Quick wit, she understands
Deep sorrows

She told me pay attention
So I wrote a check
And she laughed and said
It's best not to mention
The rest

She speaks four distinct languages
But I only listen when she speaks in anguish
That's what you get with early aging
That's what I get for always playing

She told me pay attention
So I wrote a check
And she laughed and said
It's best not to mention
The rest

It's best not to mention the rest
Mention the rest

Nobody knows
What future holds
(We never get old.)

Nobody knows
How tomorrow goes
(We never say, "No.")

Somebody goes
Forgo abandoned homes
(Why don't we go?)

The taste of rust hangs
Heavy in my mouth
A copper color stains
My crooked teeth

I am awake now
Unlike how I used to be
Though my eyes were open
I was surely dreaming

The taste of rust hangs
Tangy on your lips
Blue twinges decorate
Your iced expression

Bound with veins
Of hope and smoke
We lie side by endless side
Entwined lost to the madness

Now the taste of rust hangs
Growing older still
Let me restore the flame
To the fire in your soul

It's been said that ignorance is bliss
But I think that phrase took a swing and missed.
Cuz I look around and all the ignorance I see and hear
Seems to stem directly from fear.

Fear of knowledge, change, and what may come next
From both sides of the aisle, right and left

Mother help us we walk along in confusion
Pointing fingers, spewing hate filled abuse and
Forgetting to speak of love for fear of rejection
Father help us we ask your protection

There's more to learn if only we allow it
We should listen to more than just those who shout the loudest

Even jesters garner much attention
And are showered with affection
But their ideas are farcical and dilute
If one but tried they are simple to dispute

Die not with fear in your heart
Remember courage requires fear to start
To defeat our burgeoning ignorance
We must supplant our living indifference

Close your
turned down eyes.
Let this parting be.
Goodnight. Sleep well,
my summer smile.
Winter waits,
as do I.
It might be awhile
until dawn
but I am patient,
you are kind.
Close your eyes,
let time slip by.
In the morning
you will find
this distance
to be gone.
I will hold you
once more
before the world
knocks soft
upon your door.

A rose if but by another name
Would still be Love's stinging pain
Yeah, that's what they say

Beauty fades, petals on the lake
But the thorns remain

And they might fall out
But you'll fall in
Yeah, you'll fall in again
Spenser Bennett May 2016
Three sugars. No cream.
Stuck inside a 4 A.M. Dream
And there's nothing I can't do
Is the sky really black or just dark blue?

No cars, no souls save preying police
Their lights burn red and scream, "Freeze!"
And the night obliges
For it is not so mighty

Glass half full, still starving
Clouds overmind work their sky carving
Of all my favorite fluffy animals
Are vampires iron deficient cannibals?

The sun soon breaks like an egg on the edge
And the dream skitters light spiders from my head
Eyes pressed to withered pillow sheathing
Is this morning or deeper evening?

Am I waking from the dreaming
Or am I sleeping next to coffee steaming?
Spenser Bennett Aug 2017
Crush the night against your senses
Forget the pain of dawn and life
Return to veiled simplicity
Reveal yourself to true Heaven

She drew her time
Like water from the well
And she waged her war
Against her private hell
Behind her eyes
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
Hit my panic switch
In the static noon
Wake the nerves
That were dropped

I'm not nervous
Merely dying
From growing
Towards the sun

To have or to be
The question that
Possesses all of
My favorite dreams

I may be Heaven
I may hold Hell
But I've bled enough
To become the Earth
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
I have expanded through one million dimensions and still I remain flat.
Paper walls surrender my paper heart to the words that erase themselves with age.

If there is meaning I find it meaningless unless you got it right in one guess.
Can you feel blood in my lost chest as it circulates? Maybe that's a mistake.

Do dead men tell no tales or maybe they spin them lacking air to rattle through ragged dead lungs still pink yet misunderstood? Dust that settles behind twinkling stars lets me down above this silent neighborhood.

I think we all grow up to be pirates, Y'know the kind that the Pan hates?
Betraying our childhood dreams and aspirations for backgreens and exasperations.

If this ship is sinking I want to be the anchor, watch it all crash down in slow motion, while it buries me at the bottom of your endless ocean.
Tick, tick, tick. The clock have ceased their tocks.

Cover to cover I think I have found another darling. Can this tale continue to spin while the world above changes page by page?
Exploring stories that stand up to the test of time. Peter Pan has always been a fascinating idea to me. Thank you for reading!

In false light reflected we stare deeply into eyes the same.
Searching for Truth and finding ourselves shimmering cold over the still lake alone unflinching in the weight of eternity and her majestic indifference; blink.
A madness of heaven reaching through the water below to stir the silent sleeper of your soul, come forth from your depths and breathe the silk air you once knew.
All is glistening in the not so distant morning where the sun roars ancient and abysmal.
Where once Truth sighed heavy into shadow she will once more open like the lily seeking her sky born love.
Despair fades from eyes now clear blue like the sky and the rain washes away anger like dust from your kissed skin.
We blossom into light petals of ultra green and hyper white and dance as the joyous breeze allows.
Soon the darkness must fall again and we shall curl away to forgive the fallacious star that drowns out so many more.
False light will search us for the desperate Truth we hide.
A waking dream that danced on the edge of my eyes into the bright warmth of the sun.

Today was a car crash
Tomorrow's a few weeks away
Next month I'll see you someday
But today was a car crash
And it broke more than your bones
And it broke more than my heart
It broke everything
From the headlights
To the end of time
Nothing was the same
But you'll never change
But today was a car crash
Tomorrow's a few weeks ago
And yesterday was an eternity
But I didn't know it then
I'll live just a few moments
Without you for a second
But that second had better be a lifetime
And it had better flash before my eyes
Like the tears, like your face, like the casket, and the darkness
Tomorrow's a few weeks away
And forever came and passed
Because today was a car crash

On my first day of dying I met the sun.
A funny fellow he played tricks on everyone but it was all in good fun.
All in good fun.

On my second day of dying I met the moon. She, like me, was quite morose. Full of darkness her gloom seemed to mirror my doom.
Mirror my doom.

On my third day of dying I met the earth. A babbling brook and mountainous mirth. She spoke of living and of the renewal of spring, her birth. She kept me warm in her hearth.
Warm in her hearth.

On my last day of dying I met you. A beautiful soul, bright and true. I heard you laugh and sing to the deep blue. Ice for eyes and fire for heart you carried me through.
Carried me through.

On my first day of living I met myself. I never would have made it without your help. Now my misery lives quiet on the shelf. Our children play like fireflies in Springtime's golden wealth.
Springtime's golden wealth.

I'd burn my lips to taste the sun
Empty Sierra, are you listening
Diamond blood, my Mesozoic love
Take me higher, I'm not done blistering

There is a flower of fire to swallow
And it blossoms within my soul
Whiskey daisy, my holy hazy sin
Hell will never hold me
But it holds me, so

Can you taste the sun
From that mile high hill
Can you chase this one
And feel so empty still

The sad thing is
That if you're the sun
Then you're alone
In darkness, and so close
In this moment

There is a flower of fire to swallow
It blossoms within my soul
Whiskey daisy, my holy blazing sins
Hell will never hold me
But it holds me, so

I won't be held
But I will behold
I won't be told
But I will live to tell

I'd burn my heart to know the sun
To ashes, I'd know what it is to be awake
Diamond blood, my Mesozoic love
I thought I'd know you then, (don't you call it fate)

Won't you hold me, slow
Burn my eyes, and let me know
Empty Sierra, why you don't glow
Anymore, anymore, no
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
I want to learn how to smile in another language.
I want to burn but feel no anguish.
I'm so sorry for all those words I never said.
I'm so sorry I wrote all those love songs in my head.
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
Wander through the deep
Bark hung thick in mossy greens
Tread so lightly through fallen leaves
Still he cannot find what he seeks
Silent between the eldest trees
Spenser Bennett Mar 2016
Petals like pages telling stories of the light
Roots buried deep, hidden in the night
Settle your rages and speak
Truth is found steeped among the wheat
Spenser Bennett Aug 2017
Now the lights dance
A hidden folly
Just outside my vision
As you wait for morning
Under the stars of Ursa Minor
Can you hear their laughter
Rising above the crescent moon
Do you know they aren't laughing
No, not at you
Nor anything in particular
Merely to laugh at all
To feel that joyous abandonment
Of all serious inquiry and thought
Let them laugh
Do not fear the dawn
For you must rise with it
Fear not the coming months
For they fear you
Like a spider
Or a snake
More so
And if you react with dread
They will react with violence
Laying low their own existence
To end yours
Watch now
As these stars drift a little more
They do not fade
No
They just move on
Until the night comes again
But they are never not alight
Only your pale eyes
So bright and true
Cannot capture them
In the wake of Sol
But they dance
Oh, child do they dance
Just outside of your vision
Spenser Bennett Dec 2016
You left without a word
While I was gone about the world
and I came home a little empty
But your house was built within me
Now the fires gone out
The lights have faded
The paint is peeling
And the mountains only made me feel jaded

It's a long time coming
And I'm not done running
Maybe some day we'll see
Same page, but never the same leaf
I got caught up in the everyday
And you stood watching me watching myself waste away

Come down from that hill

Walk with me, like we used to do
Little shops on ninth, not the same
Like tripping acid without the view
I wonder if Wonder can do without you
You burn more than green and California thrills
I learned more things about that Thing and pâli, chill

Rain, rain, stains my shoes, but that don't mean nothing,
when there's nothing to do,
but watch talking horses and hide from the blues in the living room,
with the anxiety building until Hell is almost all you,
and I don't know what to do,
but I wouldn't trade the view for heaven, cuz if I've seen heaven,
well
I prefer you
Spenser Bennett Oct 2016
I'm crashing through time
Needles and branches tear at my eyes
Washing away from your horizon
And there's no life left in this kingdom
The stones have grown over
Ivy like veins of the earth
Reaching for the sky
Bury me in the salt
So my bones will not seed
The new order of carnivores
Endless motion must be exhausting
No anxiety, no matter alive
The green consumes
Rust of the soil
I'll be the endless
But there's no oxygen to burn
There's no love left in the room
And time is cyclically eroding
The possibilities for escape
Can you hear the sirens
Songs, missles, and ash
Calling me to sleep
Spenser Bennett Oct 2017
Oh, I've been waiting
And imitating
All the ways I should've been

But now I've no idea
How to be a real person
But you're showing me
And I'm learning

Take me by the hand
And make me better
Show me how to stand
To make me better

Oh, I've been waiting
for a sign dictating
How to find my way back

But the map is old and faded
The roads look like rivers
Even ink can become jaded
After the compass' last quivers

Take me by the mouth
Did it make you better
Take away the doubt
To make me better

Oh, I been waiting
It's true. Waiting
For someone like you
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
It feels I've been sleeping for far too long.
It's time to cease this dreaming.
It's time to wake up.
Spenser Bennett Mar 2016
My mind may wander far from me
To sit by ancient green mountains
To contemplate the eternal golden sea
Through the City of One Thousand Fountains
To venture 'neath the skies so free
Spenser Bennett Mar 2016
Is it poetry if I just let it go free?
Is it poetry if this is the truth to me?
Have I ever been in love or was it all a hoax?
Yeesh.
If heaven sits above then was our time all wasted grief?
Spenser Bennett Jun 2016
Forgive vanity
My wax and wane
Sordid sanity
A flip-flop game
Deep depravity
My silent shame
Grieving gravity
I'm to blame
Neuro calamity
I'm not insane
Spenser Bennett Aug 2019
Caught no eyes for Reds
No stomach for butterflies: words I
shoulda never've said
My hands are waisted
Lungs ablaze, torched by low water
Levi's
Modern man, I am, so suspended
All my lives, always I've been dependent?

I have no ears for nothings,
No matter how sweet
A nose ain't for roses nor pale concrete
Better served in service towards
Some dream, c'est fantastique...
A matter of mind, weighed Large Above
Kerouacian seams
Borne back, never to cease
My bones; clattered and battered an American beat

Some soul for a saving, suppose
No faith for the golden fleeced,
Howe'er a lion takes the meat, God knows
Of heart, I weigh much
But suffer no touch, unfeasted on an Appled iCore
How vacant must one be!
For life to give purpose, for Heaven to speak
How persistent a rose from a Sidewalk's end grows
Yet unlike a bull, I'll cane no Calgary
Thoughts on how obsessive consumerism and the overreach of advertising chip away at our ability to be human. I guess. Or not. Your call.

Lost Boy, Lost Boy
What did you lose
Lost Boy, Lost Boy
What did you choose

Where do you go
When there's no place for home
Where do you go
When there's no more hope

Lost Boy, Lost Boy
What did you know
Lost Boy, Lost Boy
What did you crow

Where did you roam
When you did plan
To never come home
From Never Never Land
Spenser Bennett Mar 2017
Your eyes pour white smoke from the fire that burns your throat.
I'll swallow my tongue singing the songs that you wrote. Cover my mouth. Watch me choke.
Employ cause and effect once we've perfected the affect and pause.

Take it back to the twisted root
The silver spilled by the traitor's truth
Swing now and silence the doubt
There's fire in my eyes that will never burn out.

I can't become just another dead bulb, flickering fast to that final "pop" of my life.
I need to be a steady star, burn forever, forever and always be someone's wishing light.

Paint it black like the empty space
Above the clouds, behind what waits
Pointillism in still water reflected low
What heaven we have yet to know

Oh, we're all burning. Burn me up inside.
I will be the sun crashing through the dawn, I'll burn out bright.
End this endless life, bring on forever night.
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
My veins are pumping gushing gold
Round and round this blushing girl
My heart: the broken center of this hollow world
All is silent against my rib cage: love creates turbulence
Whisper to your willows as they weep for yesterday's and succumb to impermanence

This sickness is spreading, I won't let it in
Decadence and heartache, they won't let you live
No
They won't let you live

Abandon your chastity
Abandon your morality
Embody vanity and chase the morale out of me
Purge your glittering eyes
So clouded with blistering lies
Diamond, diamond, fall out of the sky
All that glitters is poison to my mind

This sickness is spreading, I won't let it in
Decadence and heartache, they won't let you live
Spenser Bennett Mar 2016
Convince yourself of your certainties
But certainly they are uncertain
For the truth is hidden behind time's immovable curtain.
Spenser Bennett Jan 2017
In the bursting light
Of blistering winter's night
I shiver and cough
Spenser Bennett Jun 2019
All that is good
All that is golden
Will live in our hearts
Unlost, unbroken
Spenser Bennett Mar 2016
Well I never noticed that you looked at me differently than everyone else.
I was always too busy running around in circles trapped inside my own head.
I get caught up in what-if's and maybe's and forget that there are definites and certainties.
I focus on all these stars falling heavy around my ears and I run chasing after them missing the beauty and wonder shining sweet light on me.
When I lost myself in those moments..I should've lost them with you.
Spenser Bennett May 2016
My eyes swim oblong in my fishbowl head
Unbreathing but ***** still hangs in the air
Sorry I am for the first time I danced til the floor was dead
But I won't apologize for the broken chandelier

You dared me to live free
You said I was chicken but I told you I'm all beef, Babe
And it was pork in the blender blade
I dared you to stop me

And the whiskey fumes delight upon my nostrils
But my mind dreads your ununderstanding gaze
And I won't miss the old "Cost" shrill
Speech you seem to rehash verbate

You dared me to live free
'Cause we both know you're as ****** as I
And what I break you know I'll buy
I dared you to stop me

We're so torn up
It's Love Love Love until it's not
Restricted free verse nonsense.
Spenser Bennett Feb 2016
All that you are not
All those scars you've got
Will lead you to the end
Where I've been watching the world sleep again

Breathe it in
Forget our sin
Forget our spoken names
We journey to that sacred place

I've always been lost
A silhouette of hopeless indifference
I've always been lost
A burning darkness in the distance

You are a silver dream of mine
My only reason that seems to bind
Your golden grace bestowed on me
Leads me to a sudden peace

Awash in starry ocean waves
We've chosen our graves
Death is awaiting a single thread
A pale golden hair from atop your head

Breathe it in
Forget our sin
Forget our spoken names
We journey to that sacred place

I've always been lost
A silhouette of hopeless indifference
I've always been lost
A burning darkness in the distance

I've always been lost
A silhouette of hopeless indifference
I've always been lost
A burning darkness in the distance
Spenser Bennett Oct 2016
To love is to wait
for silence, observing earth
This vigil for death

Is all consuming
Life to love to death and back
To the space between

The lines are defined
The church bells ring as the bombs
Collide with my eyes

Holocaust now and
Again, it's a good thing, light
Destroys darkness falls

Crush me in silence
I left my shadow behind
A wingless angel

Permanently still
My impromptu modern art
May you understand

Death is no true end
Overcoming existence
To see love turn truth

— The End —
