Confidence (Tanka)
Joshua Kirby Nov 2014
Like a steady stream
That trickles through the forest,
I will persevere.
Though my journey is unknown,
I know I’ll reach the ocean.

Skydiving

I prefer her
Over the bucket list
Her soft sweet voice
Over the deafening roar
The warmth of her unexpected touch
To the sting of the frigid wind
Hours waiting
Over the free-fall
The view into her blue eyes
Better than all of God’s green Earth
The relationship
Dwarfs the experience
Her smile followed by the laugh
To the cackle of the fat man on my back
Resting in peace facing the sun
Instead of flying alone into the ground
Sharing a drink full of germs
To scraping the dirt when I land
She is exhilarating
But more trustworthy than the fabric and strings
I prefer her

Nature metaphors
And descriptive similes
All fail to capture
How sweet and lovely and good
And desirable you are

I Miss You
Joshua Kirby Nov 2014
I miss you most when you are near me,
Since I once knew you but not anymore.
Since “we” can no longer be,
I miss you most when you are near me.
If only my heart would let me be free,
I could move on. My life, restore.
I miss you most when you are near me,
Since I once knew you but not anymore.

Tadpoles In A Jar
Joshua Kirby Oct 2014
The earth is her playground beneath her feet.
Everyone around her sees that she’s sweet
And full of an innocence in her play.
She won’t stop until she’s seized the day!
Life is a fun game for her to beat.

She plays with the tadpoles that she finds neat.
For them, playing with her is such a treat.
They dream of being frogs so that someday
She’ll kiss them and make one her prince.

She traps them in a jar once filled with peat
And takes them to her home so they can meet
Her family where maybe they’ll stay.
But their dream isn’t her dream in any way.
Now it’s fools and liars who softly bleat,
“She’ll kiss them and make one her prince.”

Winter Friend (Tanka)
Joshua Kirby Nov 2014
You are warmth and peace
On a frigid winter day
Like rays of sunlight
Thawing my raw and numbed skin
Please don’t hide behind the clouds

Reflection.
Introspection.
Letting go of hope.
Silence, come envelope
Me.

Hold Me
Joshua Kirby Apr 2015
How I long for your embrace
Only you can heal my heart
Let me feel your love and grace
Develop every broken part

May I put my trust in you!
Even in pain, you are true!
When people fail

Money
Is a cruel god
Promising happiness
That never seems to last beyond
The grave
