Whenever I hear of something bad
Something terrible or quite sad
I don't feel a thing, I just stare
Like a fish that's been caught unaware
An hour after numbness, reality comes in
My feelings arrive like a costal wave breakin'
And in a place with nothing to do with the scene
It is all I can do not to cry and scream
And all through the week it's more of the same
First the lull, then the tidal wave

We are the ones who
Engineered golden rice for
Those who needed food

We are the ones who
Are starting to plan trips to
The iron planet

We are the ones who
Make earthquake proof matresses,
Buildings, and cities

We are the ones who
Are stopping malaria
With DNA's help

We are the ones who
Are actually learning
About mental health

We are the ones who
Saw racism and started
Black lives matter groups

We are the ones who
Push for equal treatments of
All ****** types

We are the ones who
Spread news from the source with just
A phone and a cause

We are the ones who
Are making changes, my friends
We are the future

I want to live for today
But keeping grades gets in the way
I want to be wild
But to get a job I have to be mild
They say "be yourself"
And throw themselves at your mental health
Welcome to high school

Welcome to high school
It's not exactly musical
Welcome to high school
Isn't it wonderful?
Forget what you know
I'm just here to show
You your classes in a place
You thought would be cool

You're underslept
You're somewhat upset
Mood swings, hormones
Family issues
A shitload of schoolwork
Mix them together in a class
And you'll pray that college will come fast
I found this poem/song in a journal that I kept in English class last year.

What an era to be alive
When people take spacedives
When scientists engineer better crops like golden rice
When politicians deny the melting of polar ice
When internet surveillance is coming to a peak
When we find answers that took so long to seek
This new era's fashions are young and old
In the face of adversity, protesters become bold
More and more we see environmental protection
And people from all over are making connections
As cities grow with a young world population
We find ourselves perplexed about infrastructure for most nations
Sometimes it seems like nothing changes at all
Then it seems like a revolution from the great to the small
In Dicken's words "it was the best of times
It was the worst of times", but there's plenty of material for a poet's rhymes

When panicking meets wondurous fantasies
Then you will see what I can see

When you test the bounds of your secrecy
Then you'll know what I can be

America isn't purple mountains and prairies
It isn't 1930's New York City
It's not marble columns and domes
It isn't crazy politicians and gridlock in Washington

And it certainly isn't Red, White, and Blue. Australia, Russia, Slovakia, and Great Britain are all red, white, and blue.
Heck, they're the exact same shades of red, white, and blue

America is freedom
America is tolerance
America is acceptance

America is about taking your traditions
And mixing them with the traditions of people around you

America is about saying what we want to
And not what someone else wants us to

America is about letting the people take the reigns.
"We the people"
It's the first line of the constitution

It's why we have memorials, marble columns, and congress

It's why people died fighting for it

Don't forget it

America is an ideal
Not a place
Not a person
Not an object

America is as beautiful
As we choose to make it
*what do you want it to look like?
This is about what America is depicted as vs what (in my opinion) it actually is (or should be). I actually wrote this three years ago, but looking at it now, I realized I should post it.

What is it called
When you look at someone
Who've you've been told
Is the enemy
And you see your mirror image?

What is it called
When you finally read about a man
Who your mother calls a traitor
And your father doesn't speak about
And you realize:
"He's exactly like me"?

What is it called
When you want to say it aloud
You want to join the fight
And discover and shout and protest and create
But you can't
Because your father would be fired
And your mother would disown you?

What is that called?
I've been reading about Edward Snowden and Aaron Swartz, and all I can think when I look at the descriptions of their lives is "holy crap, they're like male, good at programming versions of me".
The problem?
My dad works for homeland security and my mother is staunchly against these two.

What more must I show you?
You don't even listen
Listen and you might understand
Understand why I'm upset
Upset and confused, that's all
That's all your words are making me

Always follow your dreams
Even if they involve
Lions
Elephants
Motorcycles
Flying through the air
Meeting an alternate version of yourself
Talking to invisible creatures
Throwing pie at people
Interpretive dance
Singing in nonexistent languages
Walking on the celing
Contortions
Swallowing fire and blades
Leotards
Hoopskirts
Facepaint
Masks
Or flashing lights

Because in the end
When other people see it
They'll either laugh with you
Or stare, breathless and in awe

I don't know what to say
Or what I should do
Now that I know you'll never
See me as equal to you
I'm not sure how one should react when their mom says to them "you will never be an equal to your parents, don't ever talk to us like you are".

I light a match, then
I burn two candles, and three
Long sticks of incense

I love the scent, but
Everyone else I know thinks
That it smells awful

To them its so bad
That they don't even bother
Going near my room
Breeze-Mist Apr 2016
Who are you to decide
Who I talk to
What I can watch
What I can read
What I can see
What I listen to
What I like

Who are you to decide
Who my friends are
How I talk to people
Where my relationship goes
What I believe in
When my feelings are real
Which of my memories are true

who are you
*to dictate me

Do you ever drive
By a city or town in the dead of night
And wonder
About the people within?

How many are in debt from school?
How many have gone to bed with the love of their life?
How many are trying to hide family troubles behind locked doors?
Is the world's next Einstein in there?
Hollywood's next rising star?
How many go to bed afraid of coming out to their friends?
How many have some buds they'd die for in that town?
How many struggle day in and out, fleeing from a substance?
How many go through a routine each day, afraid to do more but afraid of leaving their path?
How many jot down ideas for that play they want to write on a napkin?
Is there a future president in there?
A poet of unparalleled verse?

How many people
Go from day to day in that city
Thinking they're alone in their problems
While surrounded by people who also think that?

What's going on
In those unlit houses of the city
Where the human mind resides?

Who's there?
Thoughts from a 4am bus ride in Georgia.

Why do I feel that
I'll regret what I'm saying
When I text people

Why do I feel like
Every decision is the
Most important one

Why do I still feel
Backed into a corner when
Someone shouts at me

Why do I feel that
Absolute compulsion to
Run away from here

Why is it that I
Just can't seem to make my mind
Function like others'

We all have our reasons
For why we're here

Not in existential sense
(Not this time)
But on this forum

We all have our reasons
For coming in
And writing in verse

Some of us
Want to hone writing skills
Some of us
Desire to describe the world
Some of us
Came looking for inspiration
Some of us
Need to let the skeletons out of our closets to breathe

I, personally
Am here because
This is the one place
I can let my
Wildest
Darkest
Most Lyrical
Descriptive
And Downright Crazy
Side out to the world
And no one will put me down for it
Or lock me up in an assylum

Let the wild animal
You feel like inside
Come out tonight
You don't need to hide
Wether you croon quietly
Or shout at the moon
The time of our freedom
Will arrive soon
Tonight we can run
Tonight we can prance
Tonight we will fly
Tonight we will dance
In the cover of night
We are free to transform
Into our true selves:
The ones who don't conform
We will hunt
We will play
As we can not
In the day
We will be free to say
"I like being this way."

The
Internet
Is the wild west
Of the modern era, with
Vast, open space, laws with few sheriffs
Fights between groups rights and religious beliefs
Unknown connections waiting, and some rustler's crime rings
And a presence of *** overlooked when this is taught to kids

I'm pretty sure the school needs more windows
Because it's entirely possible to go
For a day between thanksgiving and Valentine's
And never once, in your classes, even realize
That the sun orbits above our globe
My school has nearly no windows, and in classes that do, the blinds are closed to prevent glare from interfering with lessons on the board. Busses pick students up just before sunrise, so during the winter, when days are short, you only get about ninety minutes of sunlight after school during the course of the day.

It's cold outside, like the tip of a dog's muzzle
It seems like a good day to stay in and cuddle
It also seems like the wind in the air
Invites the intrepid to run out somewhere
So whether you snuggle indoors or trek outside
Good luck to those at the sun's low winter tide

All of these wires that lie by my bed
Leading to lamps, lights, and clocks around my head
Seem to be tucked away, out of mind, out of sight
Until I need to change out my two different lights
The trouble lies in finding which of the five cables I need to plug in to the three sockets for the next few hours.

Little white clouds are
The young pups, bouncing along
Tripping on their paws

The stronger, large ones
Grey, matte fur tails brushing
Through the hunter's sky

The darkest elders
Follow, howling quiet when
They return to earth

While some are alone
True to their nature, the clouds
Run their packs through skies

words
are something
we learn
at a young age
what those around us say
                becomes what we say
but words
are so much more
than our bodies
vibrating air
words tell the world
what our brain is thinking
the words we hear
              become parts of our thoughts
the words that we use
show the world who we are
where we're from
and what we want to show others
words written down
carry our thoughts across and through
space and time
a pen and ink
can and have
saved lives
started wars
broken hearts
and blown minds

A word of encouragement
Can nourish a man more
Than any supplement
                              A word of abuse
                              Can wound a man
To where medicine is of no use
A word of simple compliance
Blinds the mind
And a few of fierce rebellion
                              Become a battle cry
Maybe a few bad poems
Are less than art
But a brain releasing a cyclone into paper
Had to be a start
Maybe one day
I can find my part (s)
Until then, my mind
Wanders alongside my heart (s)
But these words
Though so little
Are only my start
This poem is basically just a portion of the random tracks of my train of thought thrown into a poem.

For all the fires in my heart
And all the verses I try to start
All of the poems that distract me from time
And run loose through my heart and sing in my mind
For all the muses in my head, muttering like one sage
I somehow can't always put it on a page

When you get nostalgia
For previous episodes, books, volumes, or songs
When you understand the world better
By comparing it to a million fictional ones
When you obsessively hit the reset button on YouTube
Waiting for the next episode or song to come out
When you have tons of fictional or celebrity crushes
But don't like anyone in your school
When you understand the characters
Better than the people around you

That's when you know you're a fangirl
Just a little bit of geeking out.

When the dogs start howling with
Ambulance sirens
The dogs in my neighborhood have started to howl in response to police and ambulance sirens.

What started with benign intentions
Turned into an Orwellian invention
What started as a way to stop a mental trip
Is being used incorrectly for censorship
Yes, YouTube may be a company
But our speech is supposed to be free
And if we wanted certain features disabled
We all would've signed up for cable

So we'll find the information
And we will speak out
Let's join together from every nation
And make the world turn about
YouTube has unveiled new guidlines for youtubers stating what constitutes "advertising friendly material", which essentially says that if a video maker swears a lot in their videos or brings up a sensitive subject like drugs or suicide (even if they are actively trying to stop these things in the video), YouTube will not allow these content creators to earn ad revenue from the videos in question.
This may not seem like a big deal, but many big YouTubers make nearly all of their money from their videos and don't have other jobs since they spend so much time not only making but also editing their videos. Under these new guidlines, if a youtuber swears a lot in their videos or if they bring up controversial subjects, they will not be able to make as revenue off of their videos, essentially taking away their pay. The only way that this can be avoided is if the youtuber in question stops making "contreversial" and "non-advertising friendly" videos.
This is a blatant act of censorship. If YouTube were at all concerned about people being triggered by a video (as they will claim that that is why the new rules are in place), they would ask youtubers to tag their videos with trigger warnings and not deprive them of ad revenue. This system only serves to drive contreversial youtubers, many of whom are very popular, to quit YouTube and look for a more stable income.
This does not violate any laws, as YouTube is a private company and the first amendment applies to the government. This does, however, violate the very principle of free speech.
Many youtubers choose to work through the media that they do because the internet is supposed to allow for freedom of expression in a way that broadcast television does not allow. YouTube also allows content creators to reach a global audience, wheras without it a video might only be available in a small reigon of the world.
There has been a trend recently of people trying to censor the internet, such as with the "right to be forgotten" laws (Which can allow criminals to hide articles about their arrests), copyright claims based on background music that no one can hear, and inconsistent age restrictions.
We need to speak up and let the world, the internet, and especially YouTube know that this is not okay.
Spread the word however you want to, make sure people know what's happening. If we all speak up, then maybe companies like YouTube will hear us.

And if you read all the way to the end of this essay, I would like to say thank you. I know that was extremely long, but I couldn't figure out how to explain it with fewer words. So for you attention and support, I will give you an emoticon rose.
