Distances
by Michael R. Burch

Moonbeams on water —
the reflected light
of a halcyon star
now drowning in night ...
So your memories are.

Footprints on beaches
now flooding with water;
the small, broken ribcage
of some primitive slaughter ...
So near, yet so far.

I wish this world we both stand on wasn't yours, but only mine
you took so much from me but we still have to share the things I love the most
The moon in the sky I ponder at is also yours to look at when you please
The air that fills my lungs and allows me to breathe is also yours to inhale
The same water that flows from my faucets is connected to yours allowing you to drink
The earth i stand on is also yours to walk
The sun that basks me in its light and warmth is also yours to enjoy and savor
so far away...but never far enough

If the world is ending, you come over right?

It turns out everything into a chaos.

People are forbidden from return to their family.

My flight are cancelling and I was command to stay.

I'll be staying right here, miles away from my parents.

I wish I could hug them but I can't.

I wish I could hug them without having any possibilities being contaminate.

How long do we have to be this far?
How long do we need this social distancing?

Please, bring me home. That's all I ask.

She sits out on the sand
Stretching her wings out,
Watching the others fly over the land,
She doubts her ability to soar
Over the waves as they crash.
She's afraid to take that jump,
Worried everyone would just laugh.
She turns back.

Up on a strong birch branch
She looks into a self-made nest
Where three dreamy eyed children hatched
Providing them a life she wished she had,
Hoping they see she tries her best
In a place where rest isn't even rest.

She cries out to the sun
As it drifts out from where she lays
Wondering when the day would come
When she has the strength to fly away

The started walking away
Before I even got there

They gave me their stuff
Because they wanted to be over there

I want to be there
But I can't be there

I don't know the way
They never told me

But even still, they're too far away

I can reach them
I know I can

But they'll run away
As far as they can

And I'll let them
I know I will

'Cause I run away
As far as I can

We will run away

In opposite directions

We will run away

Far, far away.
Told you. Been feeling kinda lonely these days.

The pain untold -
Widen the hopes,
Hide the dreams and roam
Memories unfold -
Until memories are sold.

To that very one
Far from home.
