can you see the star inside?

Taste of Freedom
Kai Apr 2020
fresh like crisp bursts of fruit
it’s a popping kind of thing
that explodes in your mouth
it’s juicy sweet and succulent
you know it when you taste it
sometimes I think feelings can be best described by the taste of it

Meet me there
Kai Apr 2020
Meet me by the river
where the sweet grass grows

Meet me in the evening shade
where our bodies will lay

Meet me with smile and kiss
something gentle on your blood lips

April Blooms
Kai Apr 2020
springtime, new growth will begin
wind chimes ring through the trees
the flowers bloom to feed the bees

go out now, feel the sun on your skin
let the grass rush under your bare feet
listen, hear your pattering heart beat

keep your cycle and see where it goes

Stranger Conversations
Kai Apr 2020
"how do you force feed an angry ferret?"
like trying to tame the seas it is difficult
or to do the reverse of someone as a parrot
but I'm glad to be here to try and consult
Stranger Conversations: Start the first line of your poem with a word or phrase from a recent passing conversation between you and someone you don’t know. This was hard due to social distancing, but here it is. Someone said this and I only heard a bit of the conversation.

Song about you
Kai Mar 2020
Like a young boy in love
I wrote a song for you
something sweet and strong
to play on my guitar
but when I finally finish
when chords and melodies
have become what they will
I try to find the lyrics
but that is there now
is an empty space for you
because while you were waiting
I tried to find a way to move you
but you were already moving on
I wrote my heart into this song
but now that you're gone
and my lyrics are left unfinished
I sit down to write them anyway
because you not wanting me
doesn't mean that I wont feel again
so for the next lonely lover
I'll sit down in this moment
finish what was meant to be your song
I'll write these lyrics through my sobs
I think I'm actually going to go write some chords for this...

Like a God
Kai Mar 2020
Like hermes on a road
dusty sandals and robes
waving hello to travelers
they make their way home

Like athena in the library
nose in a book reading aloud
young children gather round
for knowledge to share

Like poseidon by the seashore
collecting shells and bobs
waving to the waves
as they wash on shores

Like apollo riding the sky
bringing light and joy
smiling like sunshine
and warmth like a hug

Like artemis in the woods
hunting in the forest
with little girls and curls
and flowers in their hair

Toxicity
Kai Mar 2020
Like hands around throats
ringing the breath from lungs
words will bubble and foam up
spilling from those tender lips
melting fragile hearts like acid
chains that tie feet to the ground
eroding skin into bleached bones
Prompt 28: Poison, describe something toxic and its effects on a person. I wandered a little away from the prompt, but it's still a type of toxic.

Kai Feb 2020
Bright colors dance
Pattern of stripes
Swish and flick
Turning about now
When you turn
In motion flowing
Fabric so light
It could fly
Today my therapist was wearing a very cool dress. When she turned it swished and it was full of super bright colors! I kind of want one as well. I don’t think I’m tall enough to pull it off though.

Drive By
Kai Feb 2020
Maybe a car will drive by
throwing out some light
onto my face in the dark
catching on my tears there
revealing my vulnerabilities

Maybe a car will drive by
then when I leave the house
they'll think of me tomorrow
as a story on the morning news
or maybe they won't remember

Maybe a car will drive by
as I walk alone in the dark
the driver won't even glance at me
the headlights flickering across
without ever noticing my figure

Maybe a car will drive by
and it will bless me tonight
it will drive along the bridge
I will look at it from the ledge
and it could hit me on accident

Float gently down
Little speck of white
Updrafts push you round
Running through the sky
Roofs covered with you now
Illuminating the world with sparkles
Each inch of you reflecting sunlight
Soft gentle snow I watch you fall down
It’s snowing as I look out the library window. It’s nice to stop and watch it fall. To find beauty in these little moments.

Astronomy Class
Kai Feb 2020
The weight of the heavens
set on the scales of time
reduced to facts and figures

what once was celestial majesty
has become mathematical
precision and location of the stars

The universe and it’s beauty reduced
to the base of all its atoms within
what we questioned is now quantified
Just finished my astronomy unit one test. I suppose these are my thoughts so far. It’s fascinating to think that the stars were gods and spirits to people, but now I’m calculating their distance and evaluating their chemistry.

Night Time
Kai Feb 2020
There is a face in my window
cast in shadow and mirror
the street light flickers a bit
catching on the tree branches
making them seem much longer
as they scratch on my window
like nails tapping at the glass
my eyes glance away to my room
the corners seem to stretch now
figures and claws twist on the wall
my mind plays cruel visions out
as the night creeps on through

Out of Order
Kai Feb 2020
The screen flashing red
blinking menacingly
I wait by the yellow line

the trains aren't running
but it's cold outside
and darkness is creeping

there is a man watching me
as I shuffle in fear now
his face is obscured in shadow

Writer's Process
Kai Feb 2020
It starts with a spark
a flash of lightning
thoughts and ideas
you get in a moment
inspiration from above
scrambling for paper
as it slips like water
through your mind
you strain to catch
these drops of rain
so fleeting yet lovely
they pool below you
seeping into the page
I honestly write too much about water and rain. I think I have enough water-centric poems to write a book at this point.

The Mathematical Concept
Kai Feb 2020
An idea that everything has an answer
defined by a set of numbers all together
letters and ideas mesh with them
creating all that is and will ever be
a solution to all even if it isn't found
the ability to make new variables
to make sense of all the nonsense
symbols that make up the connection
such comfort in knowing this now
that everything has a defined answer
no guesses and no wish wash maybes
a yes and a no a right and a wrong one
mathematics can solve all of it for us
math is everywhere and that is lovely
I'm not very good at math, but I thinks it's beautiful. The idea that everything in life has a defined straight forward answer. It's in chemistry, physics, medicine, statistics, and even in our language formats. It's nice to know there is something that will always have a right or wrong answer. There isn't any guessing or risks if you do it right.

At Home
Kai Feb 2020
do you see the hurt
it has been so long
I thought I was numb
the hatred you harbor
it stains my skin again

was I not good enough
did I fall short somehow
what did I ever do but live
your temper is like fire
burning across my temples

was I ever even anything
you scream I’m ungrateful
what am I to be grateful for
that you birthed me on a whim
I did not consent to being alive

dusty and lonely
Kai Feb 2020
a dusty room
filled with sorrow
old interests now hallow

boxes all piled up
silent as an old tomb
the abandoned backroom

once golden shining rings
you can see the grimy buildup
on the items you tried to cover up

in the corner sits a broken violin
for the music that once flew on wings
that old case is full of wood and strings
Poetry prompt 101: Dusty Musical Instruments.

I ended up doing an abandoned room of sorts. It's kind of like that corner of my mind that I shoved everything I once loved into because I felt like I wasn't good enough at it.

Life's Long Journey
Kai Feb 2020
present
to forever
a trek beside
a road and you
down the long road
the trail that never ends
me on foot you on horseback
our journey that curves to the future
the path of destiny stretches before us now
small distant horizon of the coming years is ahead
but the dirt beneath our feet is today as it will always be
can you see how the path cuts off in the distance will we as well
look how much is behind us now we cannot even see it can you remember
I tried to make it like a path stretching out to the distance. It's small far away but big when close. kind of like life, it's big in the moment while the future and past are just thoughts and memories that are not even there. sorry for the lack of punctuation, it ruined the text formatting of the path so I ended up removing it. I'm very sorry.

Waiting Room
Kai Feb 2020
the clock is ticking
so ominous and looming
minutes pass so slow

in the waiting room
picking at lips in terror
my heart pattering

scared to make a sound
quite as death and just as still
then the door opens
nothing is more nerve racking then waiting.

(It's five seven five like a haiku)

BrandyWine
Kai Feb 2020
the brandywine has struck
from the tops of your cheeks
right down to you feet

you heard it from the birds
and heard it from the bees
now you're hearing it from me

the brandywine has struck
you're woozy and acting floozie
but you're never going to stop

not till you drip drip drop
straight from the bottle into your maw
it burns like your cheeks in the candle light
This is actually lyrics to a song I'm writing right now. They don't really translate well into poetry and I removed a lot of lines, but I thought it would be nice to get them out there. I got really frustrated with my ukulele chords while writing, so I took a break to post this here.

Cold Water
Kai Jan 2020
it burns on my skin
cold water from the faucet

Do you ever stick your hands underneath the faucet till they feel like they are burning in the cold water? It's both wonderful and painful. It's clean and yet it's horrible. Like washing away mistakes and taking the penance.

Everyone says anxiety is heavy
that it will suffocate you
and drag you down
till all there is is panic

Maybe it’s cliche to say
but mine is a bit different
it’s like buzzing electricity
a senseless strike of lightning

I stutter and flutter about
not able to speak at all
without missteps and blanks
I’ll forget in the middle of

But the worst part is turning
the churning of my stomach
the constant feeling of *****
being alive makes me feel sick
The title is kind of a meme. I'm writing something stupid about my experience is "different", but I'm sure others have felt this way too. Honestly the day you wake up it might be a different kind. Anxiety is weird like that.

Garden Girl
Kai Dec 2019
She makes me feel giddy
tingles down my spine
like sweet mint on my tongue

She's got eyes like leaves
smooth drops of lily pads
resting in her glistening orbs

she always blushes so softly
it looks like rose petals
melded on to her skin

She's lavender to my soul
calms me down to sleep
in ways only she can do
What a meme, I'm still lonely and single. My love poetry seems to increase when I feel lonely.

Gallows Day
Kai Dec 2019
A rope swings gently in the wind
hanging from an elevated stage
an audience mills below the steps

From a gleaming metal bared window
a young women in plain clothes watches
she sits proper and straight before her fate

They come at dawn clacking with her chains
she holds her head high down the hall
as tears stream down her petite face

The steps are high as they hoist her up
ringing the rope around her fragile neck
the roughness is a promise of darkness

In the crowd she sees her children mourning
Not yet dead she smile at them sadly
and mouths “I’ll always love you”

There is an ominous thump from below
and she struggles in the air hands grasping
too light for the rope to snap her neck

Hours and hours later the crowd gone
she breathes her last breath alone
hanging for something she didn’t do
