She was sunlight and cinnamon;
all wide eyes,
auburn hair, fair complexion
freckles and fleeting laughter.
She was an enigma to her friends,
a golden girl to her parents…

Dappled sunlight turned her into
fragments of an autumn impressionist panting;
all her reds, golds and peach tones
wildly blazing,
vividly flaming in a sunset's haze.

She could make people laugh
with a dry turn of phrase.
She could silence a room just by walking in
through the door.
She could silence cruel words
with a withering look.

She was going to be somebody;
the world was going to know her name,
the future was forever -
he caught her, used her,
left her under autumn leaves
in a ditch by the roadside;

and he became somebody
and she became the face
of the girl killed by him.
Hollywood made a thriller about him
and his crime;
and her mother made an album of photos of her;
and the local paper published
her brief obituary.

distance eliminates simple joy of a smile
the warmth of a kiss is extinguished
the cheer of bright laughter muted
gentle grasp of holding hands slips
and we are left in confusion when they footsteps lead away
loneliness replaces tears of comical statements
and the smell of their scent vanishes like a shy ghost
for sunny skies turn gray
and the world around us continues on, when we are frozen in a memory
our passion and motivation remains on stand still
when nudged we fall over, and refuse to be picked back up
but if we measure love in miles
rare necessities become all the more precious
kisses become sweeter
conversations stretch past closing times in restaurants
hugs become tighter, and embracing releases all past worries
glances become longing
and moments become cherished memories yet to be created
only if we would measure love in miles, instead of love in seconds
cherishing with bliss and thanks would prolong

Dislocate me from existence
Put me with the stars
Far enough away to see the distance
Into darkness without reprieve
Under burned down trees
and their shadows

I do not need your voice to convince me of things
like worth
or the color of my blood
These things I am sure of
My heart writes me letters about these things

Forget about what we said we were
Remember I was alone in your company
Your words filled with hot air
Boiling your words
Evaporating anything permanent

Liberate our nerves from any feeling we might of shared
Untie my limbs
Stretching out the presence
Drenching my skin with freedom
Calming the gooseflesh upon my bones

The well in our chests hides secrets
Ones that your words never pulled
The well filled with tainted water
So I added whiskey
And liberated your grasp

I will forever forgive you
Blending business with pleasure
Drowning yourself in an empty well
Dragging feet into the desert
of our yesterdays choices

A candle is never quite the same,
after it melts with the beauty of a flame.
Emanating such blazing warmth,
enchanting in its glimmering form.

It's just like intimacy,
being known in vulnerability.
Being held in warm embrace,
as they gently stroke your face.
Soft kisses planted on your cheeks.
And the moment your lips meet.

Certain things I wish I never felt..
For once they are felt,
they are never forgotten.

And I am never the same.

Desires once awakened cannot be silenced.  They can ignored, controlled, but the fact remains that, you know that they exist.

I am lonely, not lonely

the choice up to now
has been mine

I will slip away
(at will)
into the recesses
of small shops
of empty rooms
or quiet spaces

to avoid her touch
or his gaze
or their judgement
our subconscious desires.

But all swallowed up

deep in the belly
of fog, of smoke
a vast, impenetrable

night sky

suddenly the
all-encompassing fear
grips me

washes over
so suddenly

I realize
I have not lived at all

that I am
the only one left.

Down a long, winding road
that trudges on endlessly
into the fading silhouette
of trees
and broken sidelines

dim headlights

I am lonely, not lonely.

At the end of your adderall binge
you will walk five steps out of your bedroom to realize just what you have done:
chain smoked 3 packs of marlboro reds
made 12 lists of things that don't need to be completed until May
Clicked on your ex's Facebook page 37 times
Wrote and Rewrote 3 essays and didn't save any of them
Paced the room in 111 circles
Cleaned the refrigerator from top to bottom
and accomplished absolutely nothing
When you walk back into your room you will vow to stop crushing the pretty white balls of love into dazzling lines of magic that makes you want to do things
You say this as you justify that you still have two actual projects to finish
and get back on your knees with one finger to one nostril
You wonder why you always feel powerful on the ground
you think about it for the next 45 minutes rationalizing
that height has nothing to do with it
you come to the conclusion
That it's all about control
Something you know nothing of
It's all about perspective
and the view from the floor doesn't always have to be dirty
Beautiful things come from the ground
everything grows from there
even Adam and Eve were made from dirt
and everyone knows their names
The ground is innocence that you remember from another time
picking grass during soccer games
and making snow angels in the yard
Sometimes laying in dirty leaves looking up at the birds nesting
The sun never bothered you then
Now you only see the moon
and constellations that hold your fate
The view from the ground isn't always a dirty thing
You have all been on your knees before
tying each others shoes
double knotting the laces
making sure we don't trip
No one makes sure of that anymore
When you am on the floor at least you know you will rise again
you will grow
like everything else that comes from the ground
