For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a ****** mole, but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows!

Rain
Bare-handed, I hand the combs. The man in white smiles, bare-handed, Our cheesecloth gauntlets neat and sweet, The throats of our wrists brave lilies. He and I Have a thousand clean cells between us, Eight combs of yellow cups, And the hive itself a teacup, White with pink flowers on it, With excessive love I enameled it Thinking 'Sweetness, sweetness.' Brood cells gray as the fossils of shells Terrify me, they seem so old. What am I buying, wormy mahogany? Is there any queen at all in it? If there is, she is old, Her wings torn shawls, her long body Rubbed of its plush ---- Poor and bare and unqueenly and even shameful. I stand in a column Of winged, unmiraculous women, Honey-drudgers. I am no drudge Though for years I have eaten dust And dried plates with my dense hair. And seen my strangeness evaporate, Blue dew from dangerous skin. Will they hate me, These women who only scurry, Whose news is the open cherry, the open clover? It is almost over. I am in control. Here is my honey-machine, It will work without thinking, Opening, in spring, like an industrious ****** To scour the creaming crests As the moon, for its ivory powders, scours the sea. A third person is watching. He has nothing to do with the bee-seller or with me. Now he is gone In eight great bounds, a great scapegoat. Here is his slipper, here is another, And here the square of white linen He wore instead of a hat. He was sweet, The sweat of his efforts a rain Tugging the world to fruit. The bees found him out, Molding onto his lips like lies, Complicating his features. They thought death was worth it, but I Have a self to recover, a queen. Is she dead, is she sleeping? Where has she been, With her lion-red body, her wings of glass? Now she is flying More terrible than she ever was, red Scar in the sky, red comet Over the engine that killed her ---- The mausoleum, the wax house.

Postman Pat In His Monochrome Home
Water nymph, you are the gentle wind  Bursting the daisy, your eyes, are bells  Of blue echinacea spiriting the light— Echoing sound which water makes, ring The laureled forest leaves in cathedrals Newly sprung of pews, meadows, spark, The dance of bees, who trace your honey Scent in combs of ambrosia and sunshine. The miraculous waters are floored under  Your white, lily petals of feet, your nests Of hair are embracing tendrils of the wild  Grape, wine and sweet, long forgetfulness. Maid of the wood, daughter to the moon; Are you of Elysium or temptress of doom?

Maid of Moon and Glade
Cornwall, Cornwall every day Bright sun and fresh feelings Simple pleasures by just being here Forward thinking into old age dotage All our lives waiting, hoping, wishing Never believing it could be Out of mind with secret longing Filling up with atmospheric air Sensing that emotional rush Deep breaths swallowing cliffs and sea Wild flowers and cows here Hedgerows and windblown trees Lopsided branches pointing inland As cool salt air combs their twigs The winding tracks disappear Love is here all around, so strong Heart wrenching and stomach churning Soul and body filling up with Cornish… Cornish, as long as it’s Cornish It’s good! Give us a chance to stay Give us the chance to live Ever on the hard granite pathways Sounds of mewing gulls and thunder of surf Beating on the windswept rocks and beaches Cornish light familiar and so bright Invading our eyes and warming our hearts Gently massaging our faces with soothing fingers Lifting our spirits as breaking through the clouds It charges us with love Fulfilled and whole Our lives and minds gratefully feasting The armfuls of wonder as we carry our hearts Together, through eternity, watching As the sun sets in a blaze of Cornish light

Cornish Light
This, this song I made you, let it pierce your heart, like the silver moon earrings, I gave you. Hear my voice, close your eyes, Let me hold you on high. Let me hold you on high. Like the Kansas fields that outnumber the stars, let's walk on the wheat fields of gold, for even if I can't forgive you, my heart will freely love you. Over and over like red Georgia Peaches,  like Florida Beaches, wave after wave, rock upon rock, drips of light let's fall upon imagination, let our man run wild,    For the diamonds at dusk, are waiting for us. For like the Chicago sunrise, let the waves of it's sunrise, sing you back to life, until you and are most alive. Embrace me, hold onto me, like a California dream, pretend it's just me, like the ring on your finger, let this be, let this be, a time between you and me, like your silver moon earrings. Chicago Sunrise
My grandpa loves gnomes They’re all over the house Sitting by the mirror and useless combs There might be one that’s a mouse. Ill give you two guesses at his x-mas gifts. And every vacation we find a station That carries the friendly red hatted myths. He gleefully owns whole generations. Grandpa looks like a gnome himself. This is where we think his joy stems. He fits in too well with his porcelain wealth. But grandma puts up with it. ‘cause the gnome light keeps her books lit.

My grandpa loves gnomes
We had come to see him, the aging Tenor sing. He was as good as he had always been. But half way through, a woman appeared, Moving gracefully in bare feet upon the stage. Entering the ring of bright spot light near him. Long blond hair, falling loose around her neck, Held back both sides by Turtle Shell combs, Reflecting the light. Adorned in but a simple, low cut black dress, Her with a face beautiful as a new spring day. Held in her left hand an ebony hued violin, Touched fondly, like a well accustomed old friend. Her right hand holding a bow, ready and waiting. The Tenor’s and her eyes met and conveyed a message Only they understood.  Then starting slow and low, The full Orchestra commenced. The woman in black Brought instrument up to her chin, lovingly resting her face upon it, as if comforted by it's touch to skin. The fetching violinist, like a graceful reed, In summer breeze, began to gently sway, Laid Bow to strings and a transcended beauty, The voice of both her Instrument and from within she, Emerged through her fingers, completely filling the hall. With eyes closed, the slight movements of expression On her face registering the feelings the musical notes made, As if those gestures too, guided the bow's musical cords. Slender precise fingers lovingly caressing the strings. For nearly a minute, she and her violin played alone. Her actions of body, hands and head in concert, To her music, unavoidably hypnotic it could be said. The Tenor started to sing, and yet my eyes stayed Locked on her, as if no one else in the room was there. The blond woman in the black dress owned the stage. I have no idea how long that piece of music lasted, I could not attest to what contribution the Tenor made. Fully my attention and eventually my heart belonged To that lovely, evocative young woman in the backless, Little black dress. It’s true that I may never see or hear her play again, I know not, even her name. And yet, I’m sure that I will never forget those Few minutes mesmerized by her magical spell. Hopelessly caught in her enchanting web. With me sitting, third row, isle seat left, Worshiping as I did, at her so pretty, Slightly ***** naked feet, the striking Blond woman in the black dress.

Bob and weave, keep your tongue out your teeth, keep two fists up at all times, don't let your hands drop below your hipline, that's how you get cleaned, that's how you wind up with a head full of bees, move your feet, off the heels jump on the combs, keep your toes wide, and once you feel that supreme blow to the temple give yourself a lil tap wasps come to **** the bees when the queen is incapacitated.

Boxing.
Each day I watch the ocean swell Sometimes with hope, sometimes despair; The ocean's faces ever change Like the fashions of their hair: Monday: Like a waterfall of brown Through golden culverts flowing-- Sweeps me far away downstream, Without her ever knowing. Tuesday: Rippled clouds at sunrise, Supple, damp and red, Combed out, twisted in a braid, Or just left loose instead. Wednesday: Of her black hair a single strand Sweeter than Midnight's darkest land; When it lightens up again, Its sunrise on a beach of sand. Thursday: Like golden floss on top of corn, Silky, curly, fine, Rising from a thick, black band Above blue eyes that shine. Friday: Whipped up like a hot souffle, Luxurious, soft, held loose With ribbons, combs and perfume, Tempting like a mousse. Saturday: Her pony tail we follow, Like the Christmas star; Maybe we're not wise men, But then, maybe we are. Sunday: Her hair flew up out the vent Like a flame, When we hit an unmarked bump (Not big). The top slid shut, And her hair almost caught, So I reached up And pulled it in quick.

Their Hair
I am a ***** Minus the triggers being pulled and the drugs being sold But just a black man bold enough to face a world so cold A cold world we call society When being black and sobriety doesn't mix because we use drugs in variety But quietly I am a ***** Thinking what made this word so negative Is it because we made it positive Or is it negative we became cognitive enough for a scholarship Yes, I am a ***** no I'm not a rapper But this system makes me sick enough for chicken soup and crackers Yes, I am a ***** and I am an athlete And I still maintain my sanity from having my *** beat Although I am a ***** I am not lesser than you Nor am I second to you I just wonder what it takes to get the message to you Crazy I'm a ***** yet I still know my father Crazier calling me a ***** doesn't give me a bother Maybe it's crazy that I'm a part of the problem What's craziest is I'm a ***** still attending a college You should have no problem reading this regardless of race What's absurd is a word means more than a face We're more focused on race than we are as a species But I'm going to sit back and take a sip of this sweet tea We went from black panthers, huge bushes, picks, and combs I thought words could never hurt you? What happened to sticks and stones?

I Am A *****
Pretty is a six-letter word that can’t encompass your entire being in its arms. You were born to a mother who wore pain like trees wear their rings, as marks of fierce bravery and battle cries. You almost split her insides open coming out, wailing so hard the plaster cracked, but she grinned and bore it like a champion, even though the walls of her womb felt like one giant cigarette burn that no one cared enough to put out. You are Icarus incarnate, with a body stitched from wings, flying toward the sun every day no matter how low the storm clouds hover. Pretty is not a synonym for learning how to put together a body that fights itself every day with pocket knives, like assembling letters to form words that flame in the mouth. That’s called survival. Pretty is an ugly word. It leaves behind a bitter residue that apologies cannot erase. Pretty is just an excuse for playing darts with a woman’s confidence. When told you are not pretty, always remember how your body expanded to fit its widening cage, its blooming hips, how the growing pains were less like pain and more like cracking fault lines. How your body turned itself inside out and spilled over and over again. Getting emptied is not pretty. It is dark and wounding and it requires strength enough to move mountains. On your worst days do not look in the mirror and call yourself pretty. Call yourself trying, call yourself surviving, call yourself learning how to get through a day, a week, a month or year. Call yourself still learning. Pretty is just six letters for lipstick, false eyelashes, combs for hair that never gets tangled, not for women who earn a victory every day just managing to exist. When told you are not pretty, do not **** in your stomach. Pretty is a discriminatory word, but having a body that knows what it wants and gets what it wants is not a hate crime. It’s a healing hymn. Don’t forget how trees shake their last leaves in winter like they’re shedding skin from the old year. Shed pretty. Shed it now. Teach yourself to replace it with heart-wrenching, brilliant, clever, artistic, unique, understanding, fighting. Always living. When told you are not pretty, don’t fall in love with the ground. Get back up. This is not an apocalypse; this is not the end of the world. A six-letter word doesn’t have the power to burn down every building in site or freeze the entire world in epic proportions. Your body is not wreckage or refuse left over from a world on fire. Your body is just fine. Look in the mirror. Tell yourself, Pretty is not me. Pretty is an ugly concept. I am more.

On Fridays, I cannot have you. Though the faraway look combs through the glances, the heads lowering and longing On Fridays, I cannot have you. The icicle street of perturbing yellow parallel lines and molasses traffic that seems to rake the people across pavement into curvatures of avoidance keep me running. On Fridays, I cannot have you. I repeat it, a gesturing phrase, recurring, as I watch the transcendent glow, a denouement to a one-sentence story. On Fridays, I cannot have you. Could have: (What will save the moment in untickable preservation?) On Fridays, I cannot have you.

On Fridays, I Cannot Have You
In a Somerville coffeeshop, waiting for his single origin light roasted Pour over, Frankenstein reads a philosophy magezine, seductively planted by the lounging area. "One lives two lives." The magezine reads,   "That which one spends in their physical body, and that which begins the moment one leaves that body, lasting until all witness to ones first life has spoken its final word". The baristas eyes widen when he sees Frankenstein, The barista says nothing. He knows better than to raise the dead. Frankenstein is often confused for his monster. Condensation rises between crocheted mittens, Frankenstein Lingers on the Cherry notes in his Coffee, while it combs icicles into his snow white mustache. He likes this new version of an afterlife. It empowers him to take advantage of the time he has now, to make his second life last as long as possible. He's in the middle of this thought When his face slams against ***** snowbank. Dog **** mixing into the icicles of his moustache. A familiar mob of torches and pitchforks only see the monster. They take turns kicking. Kicking Frankenstein wakes to a lynching. When he lives He is not a monster.

Do not Raise the dead
Only the eyes remain as they were. The rest of her face is ravaged by acid. Acid thrown by two boys on a cycle. Just another dare. She combs her long hair carefully. Plaits it neatly away from her face. No curtain of hair to hide behind. Puts a bindi in the battleground of keloids, scars and uncooked skin. She wears them well. The boys genuflect in a temple, mothers kissing saffron kerchief covered heads before they gel their hair and go on another prowl. This is what 
men do, you see. Lakshmi puts another layer of cream on her burns and then stands behind a beauty counter selling bindis and lipsticks to girls with unblemished faces, like their eyes. Like her eyes.

So dance with me—close— upon our red rooftop. Let’s breathe the slow breeze, as moonlight unites the oceans in the sky and washes over the Brazilian seashore; for it heals the soul of the green earth. All the old sycamores, the owls, the hawks, even the snakes— they run now, chasing their existence. So hold on— onto my words like your wedding ring. Let me hold you close. For in the quiet, broken night, I can feel your heartbeat, your emotions running like rivers. Let me hear the rhythm of your desires, the pulse of your dreams, the flame of your waiting ambition. Let this— let this moment separate you from fear, as I listen to the drums of your heart— here. Take my hand. romeo is bleeding but not so as you'd notice he's over on 18hh street as usual lookin' so hard against the hood of his car and puttin' out a cigarette in his hand and for all the pachucos at the pumps at romeros paint and body they all seein' how far they can spit well it was just another night but how they're huddled in the brake lights of a 58 belair and listenin' to how romeo killed a sherrif his knife and they all jump when they hear the sirens but romeo just laughs and says all the racket in the world ain't never gonna save that coppers *** he'll never see another summertime for gunnin' down my brother and leavin' him like a dog beneath a car without his knife and romeo says hey man gimme a cigarette and they all reach for their pack and frankie lights it for him and pats him on the back and throws bottle at a milk truck and as it breaks he grabs his nuts and they all know they could be just like romeo if they only had the guts but romeo is bleeding but nobody can tell and he sings along with the radio with a bullet in his chest and he combs back his fenders and they all agree its clear that every thing is cool now that romeos here but romeo is bleeding and he winces now and then and he leans against the car doors and feels the blood in his shoes and someones crying in the phone booth at the 5 points by the store romeo starts his engine and wipes the blood off the door and he brodys through the signal with the radio full blast leavin' the boys there hikin' up there chinos and they all try to stand like romeo beneath the moon cut like a sickle and they're talkin' now in spanish about there hero but romeo is bleeding as he gives the man his ticket and he climbs to the balcony at the movies and he'll die without a wimper like every heros dream just like an angel with a bullet and cagney on the screen

SONNET FEATURE NUMBER NINE
THEY have painted and sung the women washing their hair, and the plaits and strands in the sun, and the golden combs and the combs of elephant tusks and the combs of buffalo horn and hoof. The sun has been good to women, drying their heads of hair as they stooped and shook their shoulders and framed their faces with copper and framed their eyes with dusk or chestnut. The rain has been good to women. If the rain should forget, if the rain left off for a year- the heads of women would wither, the copper, the dusk and chestnuts, go. They have painted and sung the women washing their hair- reckon the sun and rain in, too.

I first tasted under Apollo's lips, love and love sweetness, I, Evadne; my hair is made of crisp violets or hyacinth which the wind combs back across some rock shelf; I, Evadne, was made of the god of light. His hair was crisp to my mouth, as the flower of the crocus, across my cheek, cool as the silver-cress on Erotos bank; between my chin and throat, his mouth slipped over and over. Still between my arm and shoulder, I feel the brush of his hair, and my hands keep the gold they took, as they wandered over and over, that great arm-full of yellow flowers.

today, demeter is nothing but a bewildered ghost in a haunted meadow, skinning flowers as they weep: they're neatly lined as in an execution, the creek, a boneyard, a lair of sorrows for her dazed ********* today, the sun desperately combs through tree branches for an abandoned nest of grief but its hands just stray too far and poke at a meadow's wound — nails cutting through graying skin. this is a poem written by a bystander. this is a poem written by a witness. this is a poem written by the victim. the world blurs its lines today and demeter is nothing but a forgotten ghost in a town painted new.
