the lights are down
and the lighters sway
they cheer his shadow as it saunters onstage before him
the chatter is now a roar that compels him to take it in
before surrendering his gift
the silky smooth voice
the delicate guitar licks
snatches lost time
lost years
lost love of his poetry
and weaves it all into sweet retribution
this moment salvaged the soul
of the unknown genius
the doubts
the loss
the dreams that had no end
and the heart that hungered for this moment
had feasted
Sixto the legend
was born again
after nearly 30 years of obscurity, Sixto Rodriguez was finally being recognized as the genius singer songwriter that he was...falling through the cracks and then falling into rock immortality

Geode, a Resemblance
by Michael R. Burch

Take this geode with its rough exterior—
crude-skinned, brilliant-hearted ...

a diode of amethyst—wild, electric;
its sequined cavity—parted, revealing.

Find in its fire all brittle passion,
each jagged shard relentlessly aching.

Each spire inward—a fission startled;
in its shattered entrails—fractured light,

the heart ice breaking.

I don’t know if SEE ROCK CITY is
still stenciled in white on black
on old red barns along dusty Southern highways.

The old black and white photos weren't arrows, more like anchored arks that floated  menageries of tourists to Lookout Mountain
to see miniature Fairy Tale Caverns,
villages of Mother Goose creatures,
a Lover’s Leap with a view that overlooked
the borders of seven states on a clear day.

Hidden inside  was a falls that turned red, green, black, orange and holiday colors
on Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s, Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The last two miles were a treacherous thrill ride
up a snaking two lane mountain highway
filled with all the breathless ascent of a rollercoaster ready to be propelled at its zenith.

The tourist coming down, amped up on
on sugarcoated dreams, soda pop,
rainbow squirts and homemade fudge
dissolving like cotton candy in their mouths,
would dare the descent without a
tap of the brakes, making it the only place
on earth where heaven could collide with hell.

I’m sure those old barns have rotted down,
filling their fields in creosote abandonment.
Perhaps the whitewash of time has eroded
ROCK and even CITY leaving the passing soul
wondering what there is left to SEE.

The dream still exists amidst fairy tale caverns and meandering limestone/sandstone trails
on the very top of Lookout Mountain
waiting for a family of woodpeckers
to roost in the metal SEE ROCK CITY
birdhouse hooked to the V of my old oak.

There is a beauty, I must confess
In the roll of her eyes
She is an all-encompassing baroness
In ill disguise
There is something behind her charred lips
That I do wish to hold
But when she sharpens her lilac fingertips
I simply lose my soul

Sat still by the fire, she seemed to me
Sadly contrary to eternity
She speaks with words that one cannot teach
Her gaze beckoned me to reach

She walks to me on scalpels
I cannot deny her
She drowns my tongue
In the sound of lyres
Her name, Her name
Her name, Her name
Her name, Her name
Her name

Escapes my mouth
Through no fault of mine
She cannot be held
In the interest of time
Her age will never show too clear
When her hood falls down
The sun will kneel
There will be no sound
But her spinning heel
This conquest, so severe
Her teeth lash out like mirrors
I held her hand in fear

As she types away all of her rights
She keeps ******* tied
When she asked me to call her Eurydice
I politely declined
She threw a fleeting fit that died with a kiss
From me unto her hand
Then she said, “how could you throw away all this bliss?”
I couldn’t understand
She snapped her toes, the room bellowed
I quickly shrivelled in brilliant fright
Her nest of pearly hair swallowed me
Then she fell out of sight

The lady stood behind me
In a dress of pins
She smiled and swayed
I never saw her again
Her name, Her name
Her name, Her name
Her name, Her name
Her name

Escapes my mouth
Through no fault of mine
She cannot be held
In the interest of time
Her face will never show too clear
When her hood falls down
The sun will kneel
There will be no sound
Nor pain to feel
Her footsteps, so severe
As the pangs of her toes echo clear
I run, for I know she’s near

No matter the heat of boiling blood I have for you,
There's this look we give at truth.
See when you look at me
sand paper scuffs alongside my Memory.
A blank slate of just aesthetically pleasing  that just…
fades away.
Staring at every trace of feature upon your obdurate disguise as well as into your eyes,
we still both smile
We both know we’re supposed to be on fire
so why are we smiling?
My heart awakening and
yours contemplating
I look at you and gain some like tranquility.
Just Floats away like it’s all going to be okay.
All in the matter of seconds
And then we’re mad again
Despite what just happened.
You’re a habit that’s impossible to break, so let’s make it a strength
drop the waste and come take a taste
of the best mistake you’ll ever make
Like banging two stones together the  stubbornness lays within his eyes his name his face someone I couldn’t dare to 'love' but love finds it way and we can’t change the way we feel ..no matter how hard we try...

Remember,
it's always the darkest before dawn
If everything feels bleak and dull and painful, and you have finally hit rock bottom- remember, it can only go up from here on

Me?
Oh, I'm nothing
I wouldn't even say as nothing as a rock, as a spec of dust, as a worm, as an atom
Because that's still something

But you
You, you, you, you, you
You asked me to tell you something about myself
You who is more than something in my eyes

You are something amazing, gorgeous, bright, exhilarating, lovely, astonishing

You gave me something by asking
Something by looking
By touching
By hearing
By-
By God, by something!
Something!

I'm nothing, but you asked, so I must be something
Kid you not. This was inspired by a Tik Tok.

you are the stillness
in my life

sanctuary

while all around the world rages

granite
the hardest rock
strongest foundation

I have clung here for safety
warmth and love
immeasurably given
gratefully received
