Maine Dela Cruz Mar 2018
morning light spills upwards from the horizon,
salt lingers in thin air
tangerine skies watch over as we take the road
filled with anticipation
we turn the stereo on
sing to our favorite song—
there is no other way to escape
but this—
you, me, the road and the wind
brushing against our skin.

we pack our bags,
wrap our soap bars
spray our favorite perfume,
laughing as we peek inside each other’s purses
like Pandora’s box
wondering what else to try—
yellow sunglasses, ball caps
an oddly familiar feeling
like rummaging a newly-cleaned closet.

wind-blown and sun-kissed,
we take the path to paradise
in bikinis pastel and printed
hair braided,
glare of sunshine touching our faces
building memories from scratch—
nothing but the sand and the shore
and the splash of the waves
against the grainy surface.

your head rests on my shoulders
as we watch the daylight fading—
hues of pink, orange, purple, and blue
painted on the sky by an invisible hand
thinking there is no goodbye as beautiful as this.

Words slide off your tongue
And across my body
Like honey.
You tell me
I taste sweet
And my voice sounds like poetry.
I arch my back
And let the heat consume me
As you drive me to madness.

You stole my attention since the first time I saw you.
You stole my breath once you started talking to me.
Your charm managed to wound me up.
Even when this toy had lost its batteries.

This bandit has stolen all of my being.

You are magnetizing,
I can't get myself to look away from you
A simple gaze at you melts all of the ice that gathers around my heart.

Your presence is bittersweet
When your eyes are on me, all of my body becomes your puppet, and I stay motionless.
My eyes, to scared of leaving yours, and too scared to keep looking at them.
I crave and dread your gaze.

When you get close, I can feel the warm of your body.
It relaxes my muscles and calms my mind.
Be that as it may, you sometimes come closer than what I expect
The sudden surprise of heat shocks me into place
With your body close to mine,
My skin starts to shiver
You break through my house of confidence,
Weaken all of my defenses,
And steal my heart right out of me

I love your personality.
A personality I can relate to even though it is far more admirable than mine.

You have beauty
Not only in your magnetic looks
But in your perseverance and humanity
It gives you a strength beyond physical

You have taken my admiration with you.

I love your voice,
A melody of its own.

The simphony reaches my ears,
And they ask for more.

I love your interests .
There is always something to learn from you
Not once have I gotten bored.

I love your smile.
The way it stretches across your face,
It shines more than just light within every laugh.

I love your flaws
They remind me you are human
Despite the perfection you have reached

You have robbed my bank of words
The sugar sweet phrases I had never used
Now exist in your box of memories

I love this magnificent thief

He has taken my heart...

And I don't mind if he keeps it for a while
...
Is this what it's like to fall in love?

So clear Dear
Your mear fear

Your death lurks near here

summer's golden orb
stayed for many a long day
its heat so intense

There is a light that reaches farther than the sun
Illuminating the darkest hours
Giving one the hope to see an impossible outcome

There is a warmth that touches more than the sun
Melting a frozen box
Drowning one in the lukewarm water

There is a fire that inflames more than the sun
Igniting every bone in the body
Dragging one out of reality

The music in the background will forever there remain
Behind my ears, behind my eyes, stuck behind my brain
Colors of the rainbow, seen as though half asleep
Poems I read and plays I watch I do while counting sheep

For years my life has been hazy
Like my eyes open under water
For years my life has been hazy
Like the distortion of rising heat that won’t stop getting hotter
A A Feb 2018
There’s something about the heat.
The familiar sting on my skin that makes its way up,
Boiling heat that creeps through my veins and fills them up, up, up.
It heightens my senses,
It’s a breath of fresh air after almost being drowned.
The steam that clouds my vision to the point where I can’t remember a time when I didn’t live in a summer fog.
And I’ve never even liked the summer. The sun can go and **** itself for all I care.
What I like are saunas, gas lit stoves, fires, boiling water, matches, artificial heat, steaming showers, candles, body heat in a cold room.
Showers most of all, though.
So warm and wet that the mirror steams and your skin gleams.
Heat: it’s rising higher and meeting the burning tug halfway.
Redness surrounding my eyes, harsh against the plaster coloring of my cheeks.
A kind sort of fever, a comforting sort of fever.
A fullness that pools in all of the dips of my body: cascading warmth.
There’s something about the heat.
