Rounded smooth
Mostly flat
The perfect stone must fit
In hand comfortably
With index finger extended
Along the back edge
Firmly

With a step forward
And twist of the body
A side-arm sling
Low to the water
Whip and a fling
Last bit to touch the stone
Finger

The aim is out
Not up
Forward
Not down
A trajectory of perfect velocity
And angle to deflect the earth
And skip

Skip.......
Skip......
Skip.....
Skip....
Skip
Skip
Skip

And then the sink
To bottom
Lost forever
After giving it’s life
To a perfect skip
Across the water leaving
Rings
Finding then skipping the perfect stone was my medium as a young artist standing in shin-deep crystal clear water in Minnesota as a child and teen. Scanning for stones through ripples. Picking, lifting, judging... skipping. Always trying to get better.... always trying for the longest skips.

Faces
All I see are faces
Coming down off a trip
Everything is one
Serendipity

Evening light
Shining 'cross the lake
From behind me
Through still still air
Over still still water

You have so many
Great qualities
And so many friends
That adore you as you fade
Through amber and crimson hues

We don't wave goodbye
You just slip away
Gently and softly
As Nightshades take hold of the air
We'll see you tomorrow... same time.
Sunsets at the lake are the best. They present a brief moment of magic when the conditions are right... and oh, how beautiful when they are right.
Maybe, this thing does not matter.
It feels like a current,
But maybe it’s just another stream
with the promise of leading to the sea
when it’s truly
just heading for a lake.

Maybe, I can watch the ducks paddle over the water
and the twigs float on by.
It could be that this is how you learn,
that your gut doesn’t have eyes.

But it could also be how you learn
that there are some things
no eyes can see.

Whether it be
for the worsening or for the bettering
you are floating down this river
an island in the water
it’s viscosity carrying
you, with your hands
at the side of your hips

where you’ll end up
grace cannot be too far
when you follow the flow
who knows where you’ll end up
maybe next to those ducks
or in the vast open sea

In the sunbeams lake flies dance
Away the days like decades 'til
Exhausted from their revels drop
To coat the water with their dead
From where on Winter's other side
Unseen young will hatch and rise
To dance away their seven days
In the sunlight of another Spring
Autumn Bruening May 2019
The cold ground feels nice.
I take off my puffer
And let myself feel
The bite of last nights frost.

A moon-lit trail calls to me.
The stars lend their sparkle
To the icy layer that floats atop

Deeply, I wonder, would i swim?
Or let myself become part of the
Inevitable.
A late night drive home past the icy lake in winter. Depression moves on so quickly and more often than not, coinciding with perfect opportunities that make you second guess tomorrows possibilities or the possibility of tomorrow.

The leaf latched onto the thin branch near the brook.
But even leaves, as simple as they are, know when to let go and trust the wind to take them.

Looking at my lifeless soul beside the unknown lake
Trying to figure out what life was?
I poured my pen ink to this colorless lake watch it drink from the shore
I don't want this love no more
Even though it is the one thing that I was waiting for
But I am afraid to be alone
This trap suffocate my soul
Leading piece by piece
I thought my demons were almost defeated
But you took the silent and throw it away
I kept your secret thought you would do the same
Being held in this darkness
Where there is no light in the end
I was poisoned by that intoxicated drug
Waiting to engulf me
Life is to short... Just live your life to the fullest
