if i hated myself even more i wouldn’t be here

if i appreciated myself i would be a different color, writing better poetry, living the life i should be leading

every part of me is shattered, but it wouldn’t be if i actually glanced into the mirror and saw a girl who could measure up

there’s something wrong about me speaking my mind
but there’s no respectable reason why
—i hate myself, but i never hated you

if i appreciated myself, i would be in love with the blood in my veins, the sunburns on my face,
the flood waters i emerged from in my dismissible past,
the skin color i was born with

but your mind can hold your body hostage

your mind is more powerful than the words of affirmations you utter by your bedside mirror

i hate myself
self hatred

am i the only one who feels hurt by that?

the mirror plays favorites
she twiddles the beauty queen’s golden hair
she puckers up so lipstick can be placed on her full lips
her hair the perfect length to play with
not dry, but smooth and so healthy

she picks the prom queen’s silky dress with dignity
it’s perfect for her malnourished body
it lays and sits so beautifully
the mirror sees her and appreciates the craft she created
grins, and puts silver and gold expensive earrings on her ears

but when i approach,
she turns her face in disgust
throws an outfit at me; ripped jeans and a tacky t-shirt
she says i’m too fat and that i should keep my legs far apart so people don’t notice how weird i look
she grimaces at me and i walk away bashfully
‘never letting her look at me again’
i say
but
i always come back for her critical opinion
and i accept it
that’s exactly what i am
not beautiful, a fat failure
she’s evil, don’t let her look at you
maybe next time she’ll turn you into stone
who knows?

i pictured you
in my dreams
last night
saying i was ugly
again and again
like you used to
i don’t miss you
you hurt me
i just minded
my own business
and you had the
guts to
call me ugly
and now
i wholeheartedly
agree
i don’t miss
what you did
and said to me
and the afterthought
is that i don’t miss
you

Why do we distort beauty?
Beauty can be power, but it can also be a burden
I never understood, but now I do

When we are not bestowed with it,
We cage it by any and all means possible
We mock those who lack it and hate those who have it

Green monsters rise in us
We blur the pure with cold blacks and angry reds
We blame them while we try to be them
I suppose jealousy is a fickle thing

In the stories of old, they say one is blessed with beauty
To gain the admirable attention of others,
How it must feel to be dotted on

But then comes the curse
Of having too much attention
Of getting the wrong attention
Of being objectified and not respected
Of being catcalled in the streets and attempting to ignore crass comments and rude remarks.

Like the attention
Don't like the attention
To be called beautiful is such a nice thing
Until it's not.

Do you scrape it
or roll it
pick it
or mold it
when picking at guck?

Do you fold it
or scrunch it
Tear it
or bunch it
when wiping that muck?

Do you flip it
or flop it
hold it or drop it
when dealing with yuck?

You don't have to be beautiful,
to be worthy of beautiful love.

I can see myself clearer

every part of me working like clockwork.
a machine doesn't have to be alluring.
the mirror holds no expectations
of beauty.
and I'm safe in knowing that

I don't have to pretend.
