tiny white orbs swirl
eventide sparkles in flight
angel lights, love sent

I gaze into the depths.
Its answers are truthful.
If I had the power
To reach within,
To change.
I would.

The ones who walk with shields.
They seek unnamed prophets.
The sorrows that hindered them.
Mold us.
Their lies.
Fool us.

Seekers of wisdom and humility.
Burn our lungs.
Empty us into cups.
The answers
Will free us,
But evade me.

Turn off the lights.
I'm frayed.
Cut me loose.
Take my strength.
Hold me.
Ground me.
How do I look?

Run far away
Until the city lights fade
And the stars grow bright
Run until you hear crickets
Instead of sirens
Until your soles bleed
And your soul screams
Run until you collapse in the tall grass
Until you find your home
Here among the wildflowers

Insurrection
by Michael R. Burch

She has become as the night—listening
for rumors of dawn—while the dew, glistening,
reminds me of her, and the wind, whistling,
lashes my cheeks with its soft chastening.

She has become as the lights—flickering
in the distance—till memories old and troubling
rise up again and demand remembering ...
like peasants rebelling against a mad king.

In-Flight Convergence
by Michael R. Burch

serene, almost angelic
the lights of the city                 extend
over lumbering behemoths
shrilly screeching displeasure
they say:
that nothing is certain
that nothing man dreams or ordains
long endures his command

here the streetlights that flicker
and those blazing steadfast
seem one                                   from a distance
descend?
they abruptly
part                      ways

so that nothing is one
which at times does not suddenly blend
into garish insignificance
in the familiar alleyways
in the white neon flash
and the billboards of convenience

and man seems the afterthought of his own brilliance
as we thunder down the enlightened runways

It’s stereotypically said
that poets see beauty in everything.

Everything as in
the many ups and downs that life throws.

To a certain extent
it can be a true.

But, sometimes
beauty itself can be hidden.

And I wish to not find it.

Then it just shows up.

I see the lights of beauty
show up when I don’t want to see it.

It’s as if it forces its way
to be in plain sight,
to show off in my face.

Beauty shines of optimism.

This lets me know that
whatever I am going through
it will be overcome.

The City Is a Garment
by Michael R. Burch

A rhinestone skein, a jeweled brocade of light,—
the city is a garment stretched so thin
her neon colors bleed into the night,
and everywhere bright seams, unraveling,

cascade their brilliant contents out like coins
on motorways and esplanades; bead cars
come tumbling down long highways; at her groin
a railtrack like a zipper flashes sparks;

her hills are haired with brush like cashmere wool
and from their cleavage winking lights enlarge
and travel, slender fingers ... softly pull
themselves into the semblance of a barge.

When night becomes too chill, she quickly dons
great overcoats of warmest-colored dawn.

City lights banter,
with the night.
We walk,
like water and,
with things unseen.
Step with tranquility,
alone with serenity.
