It's 3:00 am
I am cold
and from 2,000 miles away
he warms my heart
Rae Slager Jan 2015
You tell me nothing should ever keep me at bay
I should speak what’s on my mind
And yet you censor what I say

Conformists following their set way
Unabashedly blind
You tell me nothing should ever keep me at bay

Thoughts leaping through my head like a ballet
In an elaborate design
And yet you censor what I say

Follow the script “Hello” “Good day”
Nothing new and all will be fine
You tell me nothing should ever keep me at bay

My words are clay
Moldable, unconfined
And yet you censor what I say

This world goes by in shades of gray
My rainbow is maligned
You tell me nothing should ever keep me at bay

He didn’t respond for five hours on the Fourth of July
It was warm
I was tired
Cell phone rested on my thigh
And I sat
And I waited
Another hour passed by
He was mad
Or maybe his phone was dead
Or he was with that girl,
Autumn,
He said she was giving him the eye
So I picked up my phone
And sent a message that read,
“Hey baby,
I miss you,
So, can you please reply?”
He was my world
My everything
The who made me sigh
As I listened to silly love songs
He made me want to try
To spend each moment
Speaking not from my mind
But from my heart to his
Two more hours went by
His soul with mine
Intertwined
It was dark now
Cool
Into a chair I reclined
And I sent another text
“Hi, hope your day is going well
Text me whenever,
I’m getting by.”
I missed the moment when
My brother managed to embarrass himself
Yet again
And why it was so funny
I’ll never know
Because on the phone remained my eyes
Another mindless hour went by
And finally
The phone’s ringtone chimed
But I didn’t pick it up
Let alone waste my time
With someone who made me feel so confined
I felt the wind brush against me
Smelled fresh, crisp, summer air
And I spent the night
Sitting in the grass
Watching the stars
As they danced and conversed as the fireworks burst
And I realized
I could love myself

We belong to Generation Z
We are objects
Mass produced, labeled, and sold
We are facebook, instagram, twitter
The fear of corporate America that we may define ourselves
We are molded, whittled, eroded
Down to a sliver of what could have been
We are given castles in the sky
And heads in the clouds
We are given smartphones and iPads
Our eyes are looking down
We are potential, opportunity, the future of the nation
But there's no future for this robotic generation

I'm kept up at night
Thinking about you
And I wonder if thinking of me
Makes you restless too

Music
Fills this hollow body
Making it sway
As a rhymthic marionette

Your smile
Pierces my eyes
Creeps through my head
And reaches my lips

He found salvation
and then proceeded
to pull its trigger
Rae Slager Jan 2015
I felt it
     twist around me
          tighter
               and
                    tighter
                         tears poured
                              blood slowed
                         and you stared
                    with that sly smile
               you do so well
     tighter
and
     tighter
          gasping for air
               your teeth bared
                    the snake ensnared
                         tighter
                    and
               tighter
     hands
limp
     heart
          stopped
                and you had the nerve
to look right into my lifeless eyes
                          and ask,
                               "is everything ok?"

The dam began to crack
And all eyes turned away
A single crevice
That I watched
Day after day
Like a web it branched out
And yet no one could say
They gave a **** about the dam
Until they were washed away

We have not met since you wandered through my heart
