I sought the stars
with wild, hopeful dreams
to only come up short
& break the cheshire moon

My childlike heart
now beats with  a cynical clink
& the sky is barren
where light once shown

jilted, tilted, scorned
reckless laughter flows from my lips
a broken lover's promise
turns from an act of randomness
into one of normality
as days begin to fade along the edges

bleed me dry in the quiet moments
& take my love for granted...

I'll leave my mark when I'm gone
I begged to be enough,
to be more than you could want.
yet, I find that in my darkness,
whispers pull & doubt clouds my mind.

silence has become
my only adversary
who was it - walking down the school corridor?

a Spanish teacher?

an honors student?

a football player?

you'll never know; you didn't care.

did it feel good,
mister shooter?
to pull the trigger on

a mother?

a best friend?

a boyfriend?

to take the lives of family and friends and lovers of innocent people?

was seeing those who have hurt you
suffer by your hand
worth a life behind bars?

16 years old

yet you think you have the right to take away life?
a week ago they took a gun away from a boy at my friend's school. had someone kept quiet, i could've lost some of the most important people in my life. if you suspect something, say something. the world is scary; stay safe out there.
And there we sat,
I stroked her hair and she lay across my lap...

we waited for the sky to fall down.
Her and me.

Would you like to hear a poem?
I'm sure you would
After all that's why you're here
Okay, let's see

Looking down this abyss with me
Feels kind of calming don't you think?
I can hear it gently whisper words to me
If only I could make it out
If only I could
Make it out

Wait

You hear that too?
It's a sound of wind
Brushing against something
Something empty, hollow
A plane
A hole
A burial
The sound
The uncertainty
It's been driving me insane for years now
Meanwhile
The sky told me to calm down
The abyss told me to come down
But whose voice did I hear?
I don't know anymore

But it's beautiful here, isn't it?
What?
Oh right sorry, the poem
What would you like to hear?
Maybe it's been written
somewhere in the constitution
     of the waning moon

                                         ― When somebody loves you,
you can never be lonely ―

But, appearances
  to the contrary,
the moon is sometimes blue;

counting stars alone
in a sky full of stars

is just about as lonely
as 'once in a blue moon'
                              can be ―

Like when the night is yours alone
                  or feeling alone
               in a crowded room

hearing Hank Williams moan within your silence
"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"

― When it's hard to say
                                               you love someone,..
                                               but it's harder to say
                                               when you don't ―

                • • •

A coyote's pleading howl
breaks the silent twilight engulfing trance
cast by the dappled moonlight;
like there's some kind of lonely madness
    swallowing him whole,..

                     as
    these two hollow eyes
                 gaze out through
                                     the chilly,
                                            sobering
                                                 refreshed
                                                   Autumn air
                                                                 spilling
                                                                  in through
                                                            the open window,

                                                                   counting stars ― alone
in a sky full of stars

                                                                    the crackle of the fireplace
                                                                   echoes, startling the silence
                                                                         of a feigned warmth
                                                                          from the other side
                                                                 of an otherwise hollow room

and i feel frayed as a hole in an empty pocket with nothing left to lose

the impending dark winter nights are lonesome
and  linger longer than before ...

seeing the empty space beside me
I remember how it really really aches to just be ...

Lonesome as a Blue Moon
Written by:  h.a. rivers
I let you in so I
could feel whole but now my body doesn't feel like home
Almost eight billion souls
And all I see in them
is your absence
