Kind faces smiling,
Nodding politely at words
They don’t seem to understand.
Show me pictures
Showing the richness of
A faraway distant land.
Multicoloured motor cars,
Brown apartments rising high
In Puerto Rican skies.
"In Puerto Rican Skies" was based on a song I wrote at 18 years old, and hasn't changed a whole lot since.

Producers are making films
On the decades of my life.
I'm sitting there, and
I think out loud:
I remember that!

At the Henry Ford Museum
They've displayed my Radio Flyer
And wooden Yo-Yo.
I lost them long ago.

Flea Markets sell postcards
Of Grand Bend Beach and Casino.
I bet my life there.

I've been told
My steel tubular kitchen set
Is retro.
I didn't know.

Classic Car Shows
Put barrier ropes
Around VWs.
They were cheap,
Dependable.

And everything's back in vogue,
'cept me.
Watching the documentary on The Seventies when I had another aging epiphany.

You appeared before me like a road not on the map
Freshly paved and pounded flat
And I, having just inflated my high performance tires
Greened the light and shed my hat
No sign of speed bumps or sink holes to rattle my nerves
I vroomed down your stretches and rolled through your curves.
With the top down, in the pouring rain,
I gun it and floor it; not wanting to see
The Signs of caution in front of me.
Hands on the wheel, Mister!
Eyes on the road, Sister!
“Oh please be the road I just know you can be!”
(as though you could alter your path to satisfy me…)
The road beneath does nothing to protest my bolt.
After all, it knows where it goes and cares not that I don’t.
As it yawns and bends,
I find myself wondering where it ends.
For what’s at the end of a road more often than not?
Nothing but a big ol’ parking lot!
And why should I care
How long it takes to finally get there.
So I down shift a gear and slow-up my pace.
Though now I can feel the rain on my face.
It’s okay though ‘cause now I know
I’ve no particular place to go.
I might as well lose the map, and as I grow older,
I’ll rest my vehicle on your wide soft shoulder.

I keep drawing air but nothing sticks
You being taken left a puncture wound that can only be fixed by your presence
I take in oxygen in spite of its futility

              Reaching *
true stability
an unlikely solution with every once clear path but a smudge underneath anxiety laden lenses

I wheeze as I walk this graveyard of a town
Cars all different shades and shapes
                      Passing by me
I want to ask them what the point is of having lungs when you have nothing to breathe for
And I light a cigarette in light of heavy irony

At this point I'm just feeding the only beast I want to ****
              I can't find you
         I can't get to you
I'm scared I'll lose you forever to these f#cking monsters

But I can't stop
Even when I lose sight of where I'm going
Because these cars have to stop eventually
Logic dictates they will find a parking spot
Pull off and find a place to rest
And at that moment I'll ask
In a tired, raspy, wheezing voice *I'll ask

Broken down cars on one lane highways driving fast to the middle of nowhere.
Empty bottles in the backseat with a sleeping bag waiting for my head to hit the ground.

I lost control and I ran away to the highest mountains I could see.
But decided the mountains were to high and went to the blue sea.

I lost my mind and followed it down the rabbit hole in the lush green gardens of eve.
Where forbidden fruit decided it didn't have to try to tempt me & I ate the trees clean.

Broken down cars on empty back roads leading me to abandonment and disappointment.
Drowning my fears staring at the empty bottles in my shaking hands.

I'm losing control and running away to the east coast where my heart still lives.
I'm saying goodbye to the west hoping the humidity welcomes me with open arms.

I'm losing my mind in the idea that one day I'll find us behind a picket fence and a lake so calm.
Where the fruit on the trees frowns stronger with  each passing of love.

But let's be real.... I'm just losing my mind.

long dark rides
cigarettes
smoky lies
streetlights
we only have each other on the sides
blasting music
ringing ears
somehow peaceful
like we've known each other for years

we won't tell anyone
not my place to say
but we have a need to explode all ******* day
why don't you tell the truth?
I'm falling over, slipping off the roof
down to the ******* ground

still feeling down
darkness inside me
you never said you wouldn't go through
and now you say it's ******* you?!
you have a place to go
someone to hold

you never took the time
to know that it wasn't all a simple touch
or maybe
you thought I was just love crazy
I'm drowning in thought
but we all know you're not
A decent Honda that's good on gas
A decent life savings
A couple of close buddies
Is really the whole **** thing
Summed up in a few words
Insurance companies
Are legalized buissnesses off of your discrepancies
Disguised as normal drivers themselves

Cars and vans,
Planes and ships,
They'd take you
Anywhere you want,
And then you'll leave
Or they will,
You'll realize
You don't mind
The amazing views,
All you want
Is their comfort,
The bumps, the plains,
The moving scene, the joy,
The journey.

Cars march dutifully like ants
On strings of suspended steel
Purposeful like tight rope walkers
And travel in white boxes
in the morning
