The Wonder Boys
by Michael R. Burch

(for Leslie Mellichamp, the late editor of The Lyric,
who was a friend and mentor to many poets, and
a fine and evocative poet in his own right)

The stars were always there, too-bright cliches:
scintillant truths the jaded world outgrew
as baffled poets winged keyed kites—amazed,
in dream of shocks that suddenly came true . . .

but came almost as static—background noise,
a song out of the cosmos no one hears,
or cares to hear. The poets, starstruck boys,
lay tuned in to their kite strings, saucer-eared.

They thought to feel the lightning’s brilliant sparks
electrify their nerves, their brains; the smoke
of words poured from their overheated hearts.
The kite string, knotted, made a nifty rope . . .

You will not find them here; they blew away—
in tumbling flight beyond nights’ stars. They clung
by fingertips to satellites. They strayed
too far to remain mortal. Elfin, young,

their words are with us still. Devout and fey,
they wink at us whenever skies are gray.

it came in a flurry of pink and blue
my cotton candy days
of swirling colours down the length of my spine
down the length of my throat
pooling at the base of my feet
lilac tears and a blurry violet haze
puffing like smoke before my stinging eyes
and disappearing without a trace.

fear not the unknown
but the uncertain
the state of uncertainty
is an empty eternity

this or that
neither this nor that
never escaping doubt
blank direction
I feel this way the following days after smoking. I don’t like ****, but I do it sometimes just to do it. It’s the most frustrating thing because my whole being is uncomfortable because I do not attach to any of my actions. Very strange.

We gotta do better , when you find someone
In pain , do you rob and protect them?
Do you speak or just nag them?
Tears and lies create destructive minds in awakening time,
this world is violent that even some people would take a
trip off,
So they use pills and different things to cope,
Get out the car if you can't stand smoke,
You brainwashed mind will leave you choked,
Up in the sky , you could see it cloaked,
Treat people how , you know the saying,
Cause if we come together there's no way that they can stop
Us,
Escape the terminus , don't get bashed in by negan,
You either sink or swim, there's no debating even,
Speak to me nice , them words you won't have to eat.

Do not smoke if you want to breathe

You cannot inhale polluted air expecting your lungs to continue being clean
Don't smoke if you can't inhale

it could've been me in your smoke,

lost,
somewhere in the baby cries in your home.

I see her and I see me,

could have laid down the necklace my aunt gave me,
could have taken the ****

could have, in the smoke and in the clouds,
cried in your home.

Oh my.
What a cruel world
Lots of people suffer
They couldn't fathom the reality
I breathe out the smoke in my lungs
"Oh yes, a cruel world it is"
I voiced out my thoughts
As I looked at the dead body lying beside me

The trees swinging,
I  sat at a corner,
Of a certain building unfinished,
Brick by brick,
The shovels ***** with mortar,
Unwashed, drying,
Smoked my last cigar,
Unfeeling, I might have caught cancer.
Quitting My Addiction.

Dust
by Michael R. Burch

Flame within flame,
  we burned and burned relentlessly
till there was nothing left to be consumed.
Only ash remained, the smoke plumed
like a spirit leaving its corpse, and we
were left with only a name
ever common between us.
We had thought to love “eternally,”
but the wick sputtered, the candle swooned,
the flame subsided, the smoke ballooned,
and our communal thought was: flee, flee, flee
the choking dust.
