I met a hostage on the plane.

My gaze brushed his as I glanced up from my reading. Grinning, his ample chin jutted toward the vacant middle seat. Reluctantly, I stepped into the aisle as he jostled his carry-on into the overhead bin.

His glasses, slightly askew, were plotting their escape.
His thin short hairs stood in a half ring around his head, a defeated army ready to surrender to old age.

“You’re the only one here who appears to be thinking”, he proclaimed,
puncturing my last hope of solitude.

For the next four hours, words spilled out of the hostage’s mouth.
Sometimes they gushed and other times they trickled.
I received them with the grace of a child accepting Grandma’s hand-knitted sweater on Christmas morning.

His soliloquy was punctuated only by greedy gulps of premium airline Wifi.
After a few swallows, the stench of Fox News was hot on his breath.

“I hated law school”, said the hostage.
“I studied philosophy as an undergrad and absolutely loved it. All this legal stuff is so dry and boring.”

“Then why are you doing it?” I asked, simply.

“Because I’m afraid.”

I stepped off the plane with a silent hope:
that one day, he would be free.

...
So, how's it going?
Did you end up in those arms you kept talking about?
Did she see you on the airport all jet-lagged,
all baffled, standing in the passenger area, jam-packed.
...
So, you didn't know?
She was lying on the runway, waiting for you.
Her heart pre-packed,
ready to get hijacked.
...
The differences between you and her,
7 hours to **** the time,
5092 miles away, still committed a crime.
...
June 3rd marks the day,
on which the newspaper says nothing,
cause nothing ever happened, you just went away.
...
So, what about your dreams?
She kept them for you, tucked away in a suitcase,
ready to run off with you in plain sight,
but your plane never reached this side.
...
You never even took off to be exact,
guess your bag wasn't intact,
and matter of fact,
I think honest will is what it lacked.
...
So, whatever, right?
It's not like,
it's all pointless anyway.
That's what you'd say.
...
Doesn't matter that it meant a whole lot,
she might spend 7 hours more to untangle the knot,
and has to walk 5092 miles to get back the full heart she got,
before she met a stranger who spoke of her arms,
and made her built an airport inside of her palms.
...

So, how's it going?...

I always thought the wings of a plane
were the most important part,
but they only carried me
when I was flying around.

It was then that that I realized,
She was the wheels
Who carried me
whenever I hit the ground.

Look upon the milky sky,
See that open patch of civil twilight
          Surrounded by silky white?

Look upon that speeding jet,
     See that soaring metallic (wo)man
Surrounded by freedom and a sunset?

I wish I could fly away
in the freedom of the day
to endure the horrors of the night
just to live for another flight
an escape of mundane life
a pause to everyday strife
a moment in time to forget all that's dark
a droplet of joy creates a ripple mark.

It’s an almost panic attack
in the hall of the plane.
Keep your eyes dry until the wine cart passes.
When the seatbelt sign turns off you can go into the bathroom and cry.

Every moment,
every time,
with tears in your eyes and Radiohead in your ears,
lips trembling, seizing with emotion.
You never cry
and now you can’t stop.
What is wrong with you?

I can’t help and I don’t want to
but what is wrong with you?

You tear the walls down only to build them up.
You fall down only to lay there and think about how cold the ground is.
You cry and whine and when someone looks at you
you’re always so ******* fine.

Help yourself help yourself.
Help yourself help yourself.
What is that saying
about you do it or you’ll die?
I feel I may be dying.

Tonight’s meditation takes me to an elevated plane
It captivates those that stare from below.
A spirit friend of days past… sends me warm wishes.
Giving me confidence to live my life past my inconsistencies.

This level ascends without end.
And there, in the light, I hear a voice call out to me.
“There’s a reason you were born with this warm heart and profound emotion….
Let it be a focal point for others…showing them that love passes all understanding."

“If the good is sown, the good is collected; you know this law of Karma.”
“So amplify your emotion and warm heart, show the world what you've received.”
“Everything connects to everything else.”
And I stand alone now…renewed… by the words and the warmth of the Sun.
On one hand, we know that everything happens for a reason, and there are no mistakes or coincidences. On the other hand, we learn that we can never give up, knowing that with the right tools and energy, we can reverse any decree or karma. So, which is it? Let the Light decide, or never give up? The answer is: both.

Isn't it odd how even in the skies,
you occupy my mind?
Wrote this after flying a plane,
I was distracted by him.

planes breathe
and i find myself
sinking into the
lounge chairs in
waiting rooms
traveling has always
been more about
finding home than
coming home and
at the end of the day
i lay my remains
at the feet of a rootless
tree and flowers
sprout around me

this greek yoghurt parfait
was too expensive
and the bottled water
is probably contaminated
**** airports.
i've been on a plane twelve times in six months -
