I think
my dog must be smarter than me
he may chase his tail
(even though he has no tail)
he may sit in front of an open door
waiting for me to open it

but he’s happy

therefore, my dog’s clearly smarter than me
…except he has tons of anxiety…

I found you lying dead on my kitchen floor.
It was sad because you couldn't be my dog anymore.
On August the 27th of 2013, I adopted you.
It was a really wonderful thing for me to do.
I named you after my late mother when I named you Agnes.
You were special and when I adopted you, I was truly blessed.
You were a wonderful dog who I will never forget.
You were like a daughter and you were a great pet.
Dedicated to Agnes (2011-2020) who died three years ago today on July 11, 2020.

i love like a mangled dog,
rummaging through the grimiest corners
for some sort of semblance
of tranquility disguised as chaos

fangs constantly bared
but ceaselessly yearning
to be a subject of someone’s affection

tell me,
how do i stop loving like this?
contorted. star-eyed. gullible.

tell me,
how do i stop being loved
with anything but love?

until then,
i’ll still wait for you by the porch
tied on a leash too close to my pulse.

i’ll keep on waiting.
(when) are you coming back?
are you coming back?

A heaving dog struggles to its feet.
Streaks of
the sun,
egg yolk,
lemonade,
coalesce in foam.
I look it in the eye
as it limps away.

the dog ate some flesh
off my arm then killed the bear
okay i agree
i usually try
to start work
at 09:00
but today
a streak of sun
across the middle
of the floor
was so appealing
i had to lie
stretched out
and splayed
in that pool
of warmth
within seconds
of being down
the dog nosed
at my ear
and slumped
at my side
his chin resting
on my arm
perhaps
seeking closeness
the comfort of
my presence
or maybe
simply protesting
a hint that he wished
to stretch out
where i was lay
as clouds crept
across the sky
to steal our sunlight
he shifted his weight
let out a deep-lunged sigh
but stayed at my side

All at once I understood
Because I heard the sound
Coming from the distant woods
Dogs yapping just like hounds

Endless barking on the path
Fearlessly chasing prey
Guided by no words or math
Howling to show the way

I could not help but wonder
Just how this chase would end
Keeping hope that no blunder
Listening with my friend

Mighty canines came in sight
Not one was resting still
One path only would be right
Perhaps their fate to seal

Quitting was not thought of now
Resting would not be sought
Simple instincts show us how
The troubled victim’s caught

Under thick, and captured quick
Victim of the tracking
Wounded dogs begin to lick
Xenial copse lacking

You know now the race is done
Zapped, resting in the sun
Abecedarian form
