I'm not the one you turn to
When the day is about to end
I'm the one you turn to
When you say you need a friend.

(2)
I'm not the one you turn to
When your feet are on solid ground
I'm the one you turn to
When your world has turned upside down.

(3)
I'm not the one you turn to
When you say you need a hug
I'm the one you turn to
When you want to hear, "Well done!".

(4)
If this is how it's going to be
We need to clear a few things up
You have to set your priorities straight
Or this will have to stop.

(5)
It's not fair to only need me
When your life seems somewhat glum
I have my share of off days
You're not the only one.

(6)
You don't need me in the good times
Only on the darkest days
But if you search and cannot find me
It's because you forced me to walk away.

This is                                                                          going to be
one of those nights                                                        I hopelessly
                                                       wait

up for you                                                                   only to be
disappointed again,                                                      isn't it?

Kicked to the curb
all dust and water and ash.

Passed over easily
not worth the time to step on.

Best of people
fail to offer your satisfaction.

*** drive takes over
and promises more than one release.

Its like you finally
picked a scab that was itching

and without a glance
cast it to decay.

You expect to bleed
and for that bond to come back.

Eventually only scar
tissue will be left;

is a reminder enough
to replace us?

We bleed as well
when you cut our sternum

and wiggle our ribs
to rip out what you want.

You choose to bleed
and we come for more abuse.

Whose marrow will
give in to the end coming?

everything impermanent doesn't matter
                       everything is impermanent

And for some reason, I can't make myself prioritize.
So I wind up reading web sites during the time I should be writing, writing while I should be sleeping,
and sleeping while I should be in class.
And making the "smart" list.
And continuing on the same dreaded path I've been on since middle school, when I first realized I could get away with this.

Your eyes,
so lost in everything

but me.

Was I really that ordinary?
I was last on your list of

meaningless
ludicrous
mundane

priorities.

Same old stories told,
never too loud, never too bold.
The world shifts fast.
It won't be worth it,
If you don't make it last.

But this treacherous journey,
this promise for plenty.
They have corrupted
our fickle minds,
To make stupid decisions,
to love and not to bind.

Stay in focus, keep it clear.
And hold on to everything you call dear.
You don't need to carry everything,
Just to understand the most important thing.
When I said wouldn't change for you
I didn't mean I'd stay the same for you
I'm changing 'cause I want to
I'm changing 'cause I've got to

The me I've been is no longer feasible
I realize now most people are seasonal

But it's not about other people
My priorities are wack
My motives are turning evil
And I need to turn them back
It means what it says.

The night storm washed up infant squirrels at my doorstep.
One by one, they crawled inside, their heads too heavy to hold up high.
I watched them paw at the carpet, their tongues searching.
Their claws find your sweater, within it they scamper,
they are hungry.
They rumble by my stomach, and poke their faces out of your collar.
To stop their crying, I feed them raisins, and we look to you for more.
But they see your eyes are meant for your thoughts alone,
and fall off my skin and out of your clothing.
The squirrels have grown up, and yearn for expanse.
That's okay hon, I’ll return them to the forest
first thing tomorrow morning.
