Beautiful downtown Atlanta
Sunny, blue, cloudless sky
Tall, wide, massive buildings
Window glass glistening in the sun
Beautiful, well-dressed people
Gainfully employed people
Taking care of business people
Running essential errands
Contributing to the community
Pursuing positive, purposeful lives.

I take in the sights, sounds, smells
Sounds of people walking, talking
Engines revving and car horns
Smells of restaurants and fast food vendors
Engine exhaust and overheated brakes
The feel of the sidewalk
Under my expensive dress shoes
The heat of the sun on my face and neck
The exciting hustle and bustle
Of a thriving metropolis.

A faint “Please, sir. . .” reaches my ears
And a homeless man appears
*****, disheveled, hirsute
“Please, sir. Could you. . .”
His weak speech trails off
As I divert my eyes, quicken my pace
Ignoring his petty pleas
As he disappears in my wake
Bothersome soul, good riddance
Why doesn’t the city do something?

Days later the encounter haunts me
I was so proud of the way I handled myself
How easy it was to dismiss a soul in need
Months later the encounter haunts me
Instead of the clever human
I had become cruel, inhuman
Unfeeling, unkind, uncaring
Years later the encounter still haunts me
Never will it ever happen again
Never. . . ever.

The News had then
Come by that day,
That there was cause
To sing

And sing, we did,
The Song of Life,
Like winter’s turn
To spring

The Song did never
Change a rhyme;
Its melody's still
The same…

And, daily, I will
Hear its tune,
Again, and
Then, proclaim

---

Because those things
Of cause to sing
Are News for
Every day

Like morning’s dawn,
When light returns,
And drives the
Clouds away

I sing Today
Of hope Tomorrow,
And joy for
Yesterday…

Though most of my
Old memories fade,
This Song is here
To stay

Two years.
Almost two years
Since I brought these things
To salvation.
And now they want to

Salvage

The wolf came upon us all
to devour the wicked and the weak
he would stare into your eyes
if he sensed you were good and true
he would walk away
leave you and yours
to live another day
So when the wolf came near
I chose to stand
next to you

you said sunlight
wave after wave
is an endless mercy
given to us all

Greenville, 10 AM
I see water dripping off
their tiny black hands in the street
i hear their laughter echoing out
like wind chimes up the shadows of the city block
heat flows out of their purple heads
and carries up into the chlorine air
into the orchestra of traffic
through which
we vanish
like smoke

He said he will **** her
Why did it fall in place
Like his kiss was planted
To show she was a different case
She thought he joked, but why
Maybe that's how he operates
Let's say what's the worst that can happen
And leave with just a taste
Then she will see he had mercy
While he treats her as waste
Tell her off like she was a ****
Maybe shift the whole blame
Rough wind tears through the dark
Fluorescent light shining within the dust
I follow it
Hoping to be led to the city
For the other way is infallible dissolution
An angry ocean
The wind has taken my sight
And any step could be the last plank of this decrepit pier
The storm
She is here for me and I now realize, this is a fight for life
The sudden glow and heavenly roar shows her intent
She wishes to drive me into the treacherous sea to be chewed and swallowed
Perhaps discovered by a lobster who would surely laugh at my demise
For he is malevolent of human life
