Conversations are brief surprises,
sweet, like unexpected presents,
polite, yet laced with
genuine affection and
a growing fervour;
with every farewell,
strength flies with the wind,
almost...like breath, departing
         :::::::::
for, love hides...confines itself
in the ***** of the heart, it is
known, and yet, not known, but
silently exuding a sweet scent,
a subtle fragrance...more enduring
than a gentle spray of White Linen,
or, dabs of Dolce and Gabbana...its
scent lingers, the nostrils remember.
it clings deeper, dwelling on skin pores,
in every fiber of the mind...in the veins
that carry blood, to and from the heart.
            ::::::::::
it is a fragrance so reassuring,
never vanishing...more calming,
more relaxing than a glass, or two
of chilled Champagne, or sweet Moscato
           :::::::::::
it exists, even without the sun,
for, it has a light of its own,
a torch, but, with a tamed flame,
it burns subtly...even in quiet airs.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!!!
Sally A Bayan Aug 2015
Morning rituals make you rush
But someone gets up earlier than you
You never get the chance to be first
Ah, there's a wet towel on the sofa...again!
The tiny water puddles on the floor leading to the bedroom...

The kettle  is whistling now
You bump onto each other in your haste
And you both stop.....to look at each other
Eyes brighten up....slowly give out beamish smiles.

There's toast and jam on the table
Steaming instant coffee is ready, but first,
You make a cup of fresh brew, hand it to him
His eyes squint, while he sips his hot tea,
You sit, eat, without much talk...just looking,
Like, looking at each other, and what would follow,
Would suffice to complete the hours of the day...
But, you're both dressed up... all set for work...so
You start your day....he starts his...you always leave ahead...

In the office, you remembered:
"What's the matter with me?"
You forgot to charge your cellphone and ipad last night
So you look for the charger
Only to find out, both are fully charged...
Your eyes sparkle...with much longing
Ahh, you wish for time to fly
So you could head for home, fast!

He's usually very hungry when he arrives
You hurry...chicken afritada, it will be...
Wait...the frozen chicken has been thawed...gone!
Hey!
You see a *** of chicken adobo...you salivate!
You surmise, he must've done this after you left this morning,
You look up...thank God for this angel He has given you,
And for microwave ovens, too!...you tell yourself,
"Okay, okay....I'll do the dishes tonight! ...and the coming nights!"

Life is perfect with its mix of the sweet and the bitter
Blockbuster moments and flops...together...apart
Uncontrollable smiles, frowns... tickles, tears
Even the coming....and passing of life
Days don't always end up on a high note...yet, now,
You sit, and recall all that had happened this morning
And the past mornings, evenings, weekends...
All that he did....does for you each day
All that you did...do for him everyday
All the chats you share before bedtime...until he snores,
All these combined efforts are much better ways, better proofs...
He rarely says those three words most often said by lovers,
But, you soar to Heaven, when before falling asleep,
He puts your head on his chest, and whispers to you:
"You mean the world to me."

**...My thoughts right now---why not a feel-good poem today? ...we can always create a perfect scenario in our daily imperfect world....***
Sally A Bayan Apr 2019
:::::

This afternoon gets warmer by the hour,
weird, sweaty, sere ground.....no water,
not even a shy wind to blow a feather
an unwanted restrain....very much, a tether
senses seem numbed.....unaware,
:::::

suddenly,
clouds part....in a flick of a finger,
a bolt of lightning.....then, roars the thunder
sweet energy cracks in a simple quiver
:::::

tap ruptures........rain pours
releasing scent of sweet petrichor
withered soil and rain unite
nourishing roses...yellow, pink, white
soul is sparked....instantly inspired
::::::

suddenly,
eyes and mind are drunk, yet, they concur
bulging with ideas and images without blur
all are energized by the miraculous rainwater
:::::

suddenly,
behind the wet bushes, an open mic unfolds,
frogs' croaks alternate with lizards' call...behold,
up the trees, crickets, katydids sing relentlessly
ahhh, a kind wind....it's a bit colder...finally
:::::

where sun dips, and beyond...amidst a cold
dark, a slam poetry session is live, where the bold
one's hiss, shriek, or sing in monotones...no rules,
all do their thing at the same time.......like fools.
:::::

rain has stopped, folks are out, taking it easy
............mosquitoes are ever ready
this night.....could really be ****** :)

It was many summers back
When he and she made a pact
At the end of each day
They would drive their fears away
Then close their eyes
To wake up to each one’s sweet “Hi!”

Many more summers passed
Days and nights they hoped to last
Then came the day
When there was nothing more to say.

Late hours of every evening
They would appear to be drifting
But they are not at all asleep
Just caught in their thoughts so deep.

They’re just a touch apart
Pain seeping through one’s heart
The coldness is so immense
Amidst a deafening silence.......

Coming home from the mass,
body stretches became endless
no hurried showers were done
some returned to bed, everything
was on a slow pace....but then,
kitchen aromas roused sluggish senses,
revealed garlic and onion sauteing,
beef stewing, stuffed fish grilling,
even the smell of parched soil, being
sprinkled with water...became fragrant...
all rushed to the table...for lunch...
..............................................

dessert, was a choice...nothing...or,
slices of pie..fresh strawberries dipped
in condensed milk...peanuts, sour
chips, or salty tortillas, with salsa,
all these, over loud talks...whispers,
wholesome family conversations,
where endings are ever unpredictable
...............................................

each Sunday carries a different mood
...with cups of tea, or coffee, when
discussions are serious, long, hushed...
most times, they're a tall glass of sundae,
with shaved ice, sago, sweetened yam,
or, beans, milk, and sugar........
decisions made, and agreed upon
are the multi colored toppings,
pretty much like syrup.....or ice cream...
...................................................

seven days.....with different names...
each family member brings in a new shade
we do our best, to start, and end each day
................with pleasant airs
.................especially on Sundays,
......when families gather together...

dew drops fall on grass
slight sun permeates bay window
a cool breeze blows by

2)
parsley sprigs adorn
a bowl of yellow puree
hot creamed pumpkin soup..

3)
while sipping soup, muse
flies with brown mariposa
rain taps sharp on roof

4)
i run....to gather
fresh, sun-dried clothes from clotheslines
dog stirs from the rush

wet soil's scent meanders
dry earth quenches thirst with rain
petrichor smells good!

"queen of the night" spews sweet scent
white blooms...so divine!

(Life Episodes)

Going home this evening,
i noticed a full moon following me
it reminded me of that far-off door i see
at the corners of my eyes, and mind,
closes and opens, as the wind nudges me...
...easily, i see myself through that door,
returning to those busy days.....where,

even in the dark, work beckoned...
even when tired, or when slowed down
by pregnancy, there was work to be done
in every nook, every room of our humble house...
a tummy massage calmed the baby
stretching in its womb,
i, too, needed a break before i became numb...

the rooster never stopped crowing,
demanding attention, constantly reminding...

beaming faces came with rough
edges.....unannounced, but enough
to brighten a cloudy day...laughter was
a much needed respite, from weariness,

there.....was where hair started to gray...

sun, moon and stars held my fears at bay...
day or night...night or day,
even at midnight, i and they
spoke in silence...i was always awake

it is never easy...life is not fair,
yet, i'm thankful, i feel, my cup runneth over
i'm a bird, calmly soaring high
i'm a pilot, trusting in God his every flight

countless days and nights...of watching
sun, moon and stars, taught me
all things, good and bad...come to an ending,
all in due time.........never in a hurry...

I should be tired by now,
but,
monsoon season is here, and
we are swimming as far
and as fast as we could,
away from the murky waters
of this pandemic...
it is hard enough
to ensure the safety
of the family.....to
protect them,
we are okay, but,
it is heartbreaking
to see other people are not,
they're suffering...i do my best
to help, yet, unable to
help the way i want to,
because..........i can't,

this is not just
about health...it is
also a human, economic
and social crisis...
economy is at its worst,
no signs of business activities
unemployment continues to rise
people are hungry...without shelter;
people are broken.....financially,
and otherwise

what's worse,
there are those who
use these difficult times
to instill confusion and fear,
people who deprive
the most vulnerable ones,
of much needed assistance.

clearly, hard times
bring out the worst
and the best in people
and situations...

we are going lower
than where we used
to be.....if we do sink,
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
how do we survive?

Restless, useless murmurs
poison the airs
journals and a bead plate stare
back at me, they connive, as i wait.
  💎
On the coffee table,
rough drafts lay parallel
sunlight and clear citrine spears
refuse to create shining tears.
  💎
Ideas dangle, then crumble...penciled,
then crossed out, darkened...the mind
is a lonely mannequin in a dark space,
no fire or warmth...only cold stares,
drab.....no pizzazz.
  💎
There's no glitter or sparkle
to excite an opaque mind,
to sharpen dulled senses,
my words...my beadworks
need candor and splendor.
i need my swarovskis...n o w.

In some places,
monsoon season has long ended,
in other places, some freeze, some quiver,
bending their bodies, to warm their guts...
::::
the head aches....it swells, wanting
to spew, to set loose some things
as nature speaks....murmuring
its restiveness, through gusts of wind,
::::::::
the weapon....is impatient
its holder now alert, feeling sentient
but, unswerving...sounds are clear
hurrying footsteps  do not matter
:::::::::::::
hand stretches...grasps a sign
fireworks have come and now blind
..........an unprecedented high
an untold moment becomes nigh
an energy rares to be...needs to be
......and is now ready to be
::::::::::::::::::::
already atilt
snug within the palm, its hilt
sword has yet
to pursue, to capture...but is now set
:::::
:::::::::::::
...and when she began to write,

she did it with such elan!
mind, hand and sword, worked as one
catching bright, newly born ideas
writing them down, as quickly as
they came to mind...she started swinging
dashing...circling and criss-crossing,
black blood flowed from the tip of her sword
created lines, with defined letters and words,
captured thoughts......filled blank pages
with scenes of action, without traces of rage

............................
in moments of restless silence
............her poem was born....

Lilies and selloum,
anthuriums, snake plants
and wood sorrels,
pink bougainvilleas and crotons
greet me every morning,
they keep green poetry alive and
in motion, as sighs of joy awaken
and nourish the brightly verdant.

i walk the few steps to the small
front garden...every breath taken
reminds me of
precious oxygen they give,
we breath out carbon dioxide,
they gladly accept...

i keep wondering,
"where, when, and how
did these mutualistic symbiotic
relationships come about?"
we would not...cannot survive
without them.

someone's, or something's refuse,
could be another's lifeline, or treasure,
no one...nothing...stays an island...

The lamp glows brightly now
i sit by my  pine table
the old fan quivers as it blows...sending
sheets of paper........fluttering...
mind, pen, paper, and hand
work side by side without end,
to bring out unspoken feelings
especially on long starry nights,
like tonight.

towards the table, I now lean,
my shadow slowly rises
it shields me as i start.

while tapping pen on paper,
the strong scent of "Dama de noche,"
swims through the dark atmosphere, slowly
penetrating my nostrils.........i hear the song
of the leaves.............a calming rustle,
a soft  touching of each other,
paving the way, for
pleasant thoughts to start streaming,
gentle musings long held inside
and kept alive...all now come into being
this sleepless night
......a poem's birthing, is nigh......

chest rises and falls,
on a peaceful rhythm
the soft touching of the leaves
my own breathing,
the old fan blowing,
with
sheets of paper fluttering,
and on paper...........pen tapping,
all these sounds, create my poetry's
symphony.

at length, i get weary
from writing my poems of thee,
outside, i watch dark shadows of trees swaying
a soulful music comes to mind
the sweetest hymn
ever hummed to me,
reminding me, it is time
to "take five...."

I wonder still, if you'd enjoy milked tea,
well, i'd let you....while i sip my coffee
let's gaze eye to eye and let things be.

spaces and times are not always comfy.
let's maximize, talk as we walk leisurely,
in spacious perimeters of the mind...saying
"us," and "we," first times, unconsciously,
a sight to behold, we surely could be
let's allow our feelings to unfold, shall we?

maybe, as we dine,
maybe, over wine.

by a shady banyan tree, we could stroll,
or bury our feet in the cool sandy shore
eyes and hearts are nourished lavishly
our souls, enriched generously,
as we devour the sky's infinity

we go back, refill our cups...would yours be tea
again? mine, this time, would be rummed coffee.

I soar, when our thoughts travel synchronously
sometimes, though, we're like a broken poetry

some parts of life simply cannot be changed
and i, definitely, refuse to break a chain.

and i start asking questions unceasingly,
which later, turn to crumpled poetry...

Define me..........

a pebble? a shell, out of many?
the ocean, that never runs out of water?
a bud of pale pink rose? slowly opening its petals?
a tree, whose network of roots
spread wider...deeper, neath the ground?
am i the pristine water cascading down a waterfall?
a boulder in an isle? a seawall braving the stormy winds?
could i be a beacon, a lighthouse? high above the raging waters?
guiding those weary travelers, towards placid waters?
am i one of the various faces inside a quaint coffee shop?
like one i see right now, with unfocused eyes?
having a cup of fresh brew...waiting for someone...old? or new?

And you....who might you be?

a jazzy sway, a dip? a painting?  an instrumental tune?
are you the high and low of tide in june?
a story of lovers and sand dunes, that has no ending?
a haven for the homeless? a wall for the weak, those needing?
a kitten? a puppy? a bird, on a twig perching?
are you a voice in the night...calling me?
whispering my name to the wind?
is it you i hear singing, "The Long Run?"
did you come from Krypton? a falling star? a shooting star?
could you be one of the many faces inside a quaint coffee shop?
are you the one...with untainted smile headed towards me?
ahh, you're looking at my brew...you must be meeting someone too!
could we be, the you and me...the me and you?
who at this moment, are meant to have tea...for two?

They're white flags...waving,
on stretched dreary nights, til morn,
when breeze blows stead'ly...

they're screened slideshows of
dreamed moments......a face, a name,
tease the aching  heart...

thoughts of what's not here
stir the mind and the senses,
when eyes are closed shut

sober moments break,
pieces shimmer in the dark
................serenity fades...

i look up...beg, that
my dreams and wishes, become
miracles...from God...

I AM GRATEFUL---
for having my family
my five granddaughters, especially
they are safe and healthy
we have roof over our heads and
clothes to keep us warm
there is always food on our table...

I AM GRATEFUL, THAT ---
on each new day,  i am able to
get up, alone...without much effort
can wash my face, brush my teeth,
clean my bathroom regularly
take a shower on my own
cook what i want to eat,
eat alone...
change the curtains in our house,
change my bedsheets without help,
as often as i want to...

I AM GRATEFUL, THAT I ---
still celebrated another birthday
was able to say THANK YOU!
will be with family and friends on Thanksgiving day
made scary decors for Halloween
decked our house with a tree and lanterns before December
hang stars, angels in corners and in between
am strong enough to put them all away when Christmas is over...

I AM GRATEFUL I AM STILL ABLE TO WITNESS
how a night of fireworks and celebrations
easily segues into a day of new beginnings...

I AM GRATEFUL THAT I CAN ---
write, share my thoughts, my moments,
look back to the past with a smile,
find contentment where i am now,
be with good friends, old and new,
look forward to my future,
wake up to each new day
and another.......and

when so many questions arise
and answers are hard to find
come these two words
few and yet, sufficient, satisfying.

so often wondered
why it was called
the wisdom of the children
for how could the so young
acquire such insight.

you've reasoned hard
pondering the puzzles, riddles
that demand answers
but none arrive.
one remembers those
two words, wise and simple
from the wise and the simple:

"J u s t  B e c a u s e..."

...gives a shiver.....it shames me,
my weaknesses, are on the surface
needing, rises this misty evening.
this cold, cold night, further emphasizes,
i need God...His Light and Shadow, to
reassure me, when gray, covers blue skies
my loved ones are my inspirations
they feed my need to write
yet, they have their own concerns...

i humbly accept.....i am not my own island...

there's this urge to run...to race with gusty winds,
arrive fast, at my desired destination,
.......but, i am halted...always reminded...
...i listen to two soft voices within
..one is guiding...the other, almost rebelling...
i feel the chill from this empty space next to me
i'm a mix of want........and fear....for,
i need you this moment of twilight,
...and each long night that i stay awake
floating, in this expanse of darkness...
my conflicted soul...sends out signals  of fear..
do my fears make me a craven coward?

the evening breeze makes its presence known
i weep in a hush, from thoughts of sailing...alone,
................ on life's lengthy moonlit bays........

..after enunciation
...of my true voice, my conscience
i could use some company
......like, i need you now
.............to help me make it,
...................through this night of exile...

Save from the hidden nests of birds,
it was the only one there...isolated,
like an isle...crested on the leveled
top of a gorge...its way down or up
was through a hand-carved series of
steps on its *****...at its front was a
curved gorge......one would think,
it was trying to cross over

the cottage was small, weather-beaten,
desolate......its wooden walls seemed to
have shrunk...its faded colors proclaimed
its age...its having survived past storms....
from its window, the stream was seen,
and heard, flowing on and on between
these two precipitous valleys.

light came from the sun...and moon,
music was provided by the murmurs of
the forceful wind, the continuous flow of
water on the stream, the stirring of the leaves,
the crackling of branches and twigs, the birds'
singing in the spring...the pounding of heavy
rains on its roof...and countless other hymns
of nature......the dweller had heard them all...

beneath a lonely moon glow,
when nights were cold,
there hovered low 'pon its aged roof,
rounds of layered fog...like a series of
steps....like a stairway to the sky...
fog slyly crept, and wilfully shrouded
the cottage.....it vanished from view,
the two gorges and the stream, hushed,
in the dark loneliness of that secluded
spot......their vulnerabilities, trapped
inside....misshapen silhouettes...

in light and in dark,
the whistles of nearing and departing
boats....were wailing, haunting calls,
piercing the peaceful calm of the valleys, or,
maybe, the stilled complacence of the cottage,
or...of the one living in that lonely cottage,
...lost, or gone astray, now weary and worn,
willing to be found...longing to be reunited
.......with the light and warmth of love...

the cottage, the gorges, and the stream
would be loneliest,
without the cottage dweller...

(Secret Place)
(love poem# 2)

There's a very special place i know.....so calm,
so peaceful, with its Caribbean blue sky,
made bluer by light orange streaks...nearby,
a stream of silver water, flows gently...its tune
relaxes the mind, for, simultaneously, a breeze
blows softly...touches my face, arms, like a kiss,
a cold brush against my skin, that wakes, and
holds still, my wandering mind.....so i'd notice a
heavenly garden....with fragrant blossoms and
tamed colors, to soothe my weary eyes, my soul...
it is a haven so private...only for me, to go to...
yet... i see you there...where i hide my dreams,
my private feelings, my dark moments, my doubts,
my fears, my enlightened moments, you know them
all, spot on...without me telling you...we are mates,
you, me, we fit into place, in every space...even in the
small recesses, and holes of our souls, we silently agree,
doors i have long closed...feelings i've tossed in the dark,
you sensed them all............we...are two hands clasped...

this has become our secret haven, our sacred place,
here, where we surrender ourselves to each other,
here, where we share quiet moments all alone,
here, where started, and bloomed...a dawning,
here, where, all our eyes, all our hearts longed for,
we now behold....we now feel....we now embrace...

......was a freezing morning.
no rooster woke me....i opened
my eyes at first light of dawn,
sipped hot coffee....my thoughts,
recalling....traveling, with the swirling steam...

turkey wasn't done yet,
but, hours before, table was already set...
while awaiting guests,
I leant on the counter...my head, to rest,
i looked outside the small window
and was greeted by a full moon, aglow...

there was so much food on the table...weariness
was healed by laughter...conversations touched
on weather, politics, food...they refused to end,
glasses sparkled with bubbly wine....sliced meat
was arranged on a big tray...baked sweet potato
with caramel smelled, tasted good...broccoli rave
was green and spicy...i didn't know potato salad
could taste good without meat!....coffee and pies
came next.....the dogs, communicated with their
eyes and paws...socializing, too, like their masters,
i saw what was left, after slicing the plump roasted
fowl...a skeleton, still with thick strands of meat, and
the  palatable stuffing made with onions and prunes.

dishes were washed, kitchen was back in order,
after showering....everyone rushed to their beds,
yet, i had to peep out the window, one last time...
the full moon, still was upon us...confirming its
presence....a long time witness to the moments
we celebrate........encouraging our moods,
our thoughts.....our hearts.......even when
it's not a thanksgiving night..

(of Angkor Wat)

Two years after, i still think of that
forest, where an old temple stands...
most structures are carved with intricate
designs and images...architecture was
influenced by their Khmer culture...

posts, frames and doors are stilled,
statues are tight-lipped, like frozen
witnesses...drowning in the voices
and noises of flocks of tourists,
reminding me of the noise and confusion
of my daily existence....in my own world..

i went up and down many stairs, went through
doors within doors, i lost count, while catching
my breath, wondered why there were just door
frames............silent walls, old posts, and old
trees gave a cold feel of a distant past......yet,
in my mind, an aura of magic and mystery
hovered upon the entire temple...as if ghosts
of wisdom, and lots of stories lay dormant,
imprisoned......within the structures...

two summers and monsoon seasons passed,
my thoughts on Angkor Wat, haunt me still,
and bring back my thoughts on those doors;

some doors on our paths are closed shut,
some are ajar...some open easily, but are
ignored, or feared...some, close too soon,
before we make our first step to enter...
some stay open, yet, we become complacent,
some, have no closures or finality...leaves
one in limbo....
how will we know if it's the last one for us?
how many doors more...for you? for me?
does death give an end to life's entrances?
........or, is it just a beginning?

The sun has become harder to bear
this late April morning.....under
a perfect blue sky, the sun is bright as ever,
it slightly ****** the skin,
grass takes all the heat but is just as green
and still sways to the blowing wind...

we're showered with many tribulations,
bombarded with dim scenarios...revelations

of despondency, death, desperation,
......and of man's evil inclinations...

fear and confusion filter through holes
and tiniest crevices of grounds and walls,

we make do with small corners,
just to create spaces apart  from each other

we hear warnings...talks in apocalyptic
tones...we learn of events cataclysmic,

yet, we ignore earth's stormy winds and waves,
telling us.....begging us to change our ways.

we breathe, we can see, we have ears
clearly, we choose what to see and hear...

Across the house,
There's something going on
Sounds louder than ordinary
A discussion maybe
Exchanging views
They are shielded by the hanging leaves
Of a row of banana plants
Heads are bowing...then rising

Suddenly....a loud mix of sounds ...

A light wind blows, banana leaves sway
And the heads of those present spew
Angry meows,
And arrrs,
And  hrrrs
And growls,
And grrrrs
And the enraged yelling of a human's voice
Overpower the soft, scared purring
In one corner...

Soon,
Inch by inch...
Three, four, striped stray cats, with a few kittens in tow
Distance  themselves
Away from a big, wide platter of food,
Being selfishly devoured
By two big mongrels, of brown and white...
The Feline Forum, supposed to be with free dinner,
Is over
Has just been disrupted
By unwanted visitors
Starving intruders that came by
This  early evening.

It is dusk...I see fire...I see both dogs
They're black as coal...fiery red-eyed...and triple-horned
Holding on to each of their tridents
I wish they'd go to hell....where they belong.

🌿🌱 🍃 👩‍🌾

In the garden, the hands and
the mind are always kept busy.
while pruning, pulling out slugs,
or just repotting, every fibre of
stress enslaving one's person,
softens and melts...none can
stop the flow of joy when we
see new twigs, new leaves,
and new flower buds.

That soothing, peaceful silence
in plants growing, enfolds the
gardener, who understands and
lets God's humble creatures
quietly live their lives.

Pine trees grow taller ,wider,
spiders spin their webs,
grasshoppers hop and feed,
dragonflies, butterflies mature
in their hidden spots...while
gentle breezes make leaves
softly rustle...no sharp noises,
no shrills, no poundings heard,
just whispers  of  the gardener's
relaxed  breaths  and  sighs,
while taking in, enjoying the cold
feel of the soil, the clay pots, and
the tap water flowing.

In the upper sphere of the garden,
dreams, thoughts, and sentiments
that dwell in the mind, form a dome,
an arc, like a rainbow after the rain.
the gardener gets lost in a chasm
of thoughts...forgetting the burdens
of life..........forgetting about time.

After church that night,
i had no ride, there were no lights
Just walked determinedly...
That no harm would accost me
That no raindrops upon me would fall
Were my prayers, my most fervent calls,
I played deaf to howling dogs
Never mind the croaking of the hiding frogs
I had no cane to wag or shoo away the dogs that followed
But i grew cold, I knew they were breathing, these faceless shadows
I had no more strength in store
But fear melted and came out of my pores
I believed, someone unconquerable kept my fears at bay
While a pearly full moon, lighted my way.

The road was still long, and sloping
And i sensed the rain coming
But how could it happen tonight
With a moon in sight?
For some reason, i looked up and it was gone!
Couldn't see, even a spoon-shaped one
There was just a soft beam,
Shedding dismal light, it had seemed.

And i,  was now catching my breath---

Almost all was hushed by the darkness
But, all took light, as i passed by neighbors' houses
Under the navy blue sky, the wind gave a not so gentle blow
I looked up, saw my pearly moon back...i was led home, by a glow.

The glow...His words, shone bright upon me,
though i saw dark, the Glow from the Gospel, guided me
they echoed that night of anticipated mass:
"If you remain in me and my words in you, then you will ask
for anything...and you shall have it.."
He kept me safe, and so be it
God's words proved so true
From fear and danger, He delivered me, He got me through...

(This was inspired by Pradip's comments on
an old  poem  of mine,  "Anticipation."
          It's been a year since...and i still
go back to that poem, to read
                his words.....to recall the
                    countless waitings i
                        went through in
                              my life.)

Pradip Chattopadhyay › Anticipation
Anticipation is such a perfect word Sally for the hopeful wait.
Let's hope we come out of it more resilient more humane.

THE HOPEFUL WAIT

We wait for something to
take place...desperately,
we count the days, the hours,
for a wish to materialize,

a small voice whispers
encourages us to hang on,
to not think of the waiting
as a difficulty,
like, a cross to bear,
because.....it is not...

the waiting time, the passing
hours, are journeys where
epiphanies unfold, and clarify
our dimmed perspectives.

while we wait, while battling
adversity and weariness,
we must make sure to fortify
our faith, our determination,
our patience, and not go the
opposite way...

some may not agree...but, there is
wisdom in what could be, where
none is certain...we see its beauty
when recalling the waiting.....life
teaches us to welcome, to embrace
the uncertainty....to trust the wait.

There is something about this
House in Hackensack...
It attracts people...like a magnet.
They often gather here, and
They are welcomed any time.
Eyes and souls surround,
Even strangers are drawn to it,
Like bees attracted to the flowers.
Reunions are looked forward to...
Even short chats and visits
For some coffee or wine
Are always welcome.
This house....
It makes people want to come back...

It's not just the food,
Or the help it offers...
The comeliness of the place,
The people that live within...
The noise... ever-present,
The shaking of the stairs, when the boys
Chase, tease each other...
The squabbles, replete with tears...
Cabinets are real heavy,
With weight-y stories to tell...
The bedrooms, so inviting, where jokes
And giggles underneath the covers
Could be heard till late hours of the night...

All gather in the kitchen,
The hub in this house...
Family, friends...even new guests
Do not go to the living room...
They walk straight to the kitchen.
There, where the home scents
Exude warmth,
Fragrant with home-cooking.
The long dining table says it all...
A different kind of music
Plays every time
And invites everyone
To stay for a while and relax...
It beckons each time...
It whispers...
"Go, find your corner...do your thing,
You'll be okay..."
And so, the cozy sun room became
A favorite spot in that house,
Where beautiful poetry bloomed
At any hour during that whole month.

From out front, along the street,
Circling around to the backyard,
Then back inside...
It has now finally dawned on this clouded mind,
What that "something" is...
This house, metamorphosed
From an old, kind of cold Victorian, to a homier,
More comfortable modernized domicile...
Now radiates with love, warmth and kindness,
The energy emitted by the family living within...
The people are the crown and the charm...
They are the smoke coming out of the chimney...
The  A U R A  of this house, standing proud
Along Catalpa Avenue.........

(The first one, Marian...hope you like it.)

The Lady sat on the ledge of the fence
elevated,
higher than the rest
unreachable...
from left to right
She glanced,
observing, waiting...
action was about to begin:
the chosen two sashayed in,
from both sides of Her majesty...
if only looks could ****
they would have glared at each other
to death
they teased,
then swaggered,
emitting sounds of arrogance,
soft, becoming loud
to scare, to ensnare...
The Lady sat, still waiting,
until a winner is proclaimed...
the teasing and the noise
was taking too long, she thought...
She, who was above the rest
yawned, and was quickly
deciding...
slowly, she stood,
stretching legs, curling at the end
then left the ledge
while the two protagonists
stopped short of wounding themselves...
they looked at each other
angrily,
frustrated...
it had been an empty, useless fight
the two noisily meowed, purred
short of sparring
enthusiasm wasn't there anymore..
they went to their own sides of the street
Her majesty, gone to another place
entertaining two new protagonists
disgusted with the first two...

choosing her mate was far from over.

Eyes have opened
i am wakened

now longing for steaming coffee
to shrug off lethargy, and anxiety,

shortly, the severity of today's statistics
will air...how do we fight inner hysterics?

we watch, side by side, real and fake news,
we've plunged deeper, there's more to lose,

we miss fresh air, our jobs, our daily income,
in desperation, we ask, "where art thou, freedom?"

while medical and non-medical front-liners,
tackle and battle another corona-ed 24 hours...

morning birds' tweets, the crowing of rooster
blend with the riotous hum of the old washer

eight dogs chase a stray cat...one is ahead,
while still biting a piece of tasty 😋 bread...

i hear somebody sweeping...clearing
the backyard from the dogs' doings

my morning
  is ongoing 😷

Within the confines
of areas quarantined
people hold discussions,
hued with apprehension

murmurs
about new songs,
play in the air
they're actually old songs
given new lyrics
same life..reorganized
new ways...introduced,
to be etched
into our minds,
our systems
for how long?
it isn't yet, known...

stubborn minds say
abrupt!...harsh!
unbelievable! yet,
we will soon be
transformed...
new themes, new
styles, new clothes
different styles...

topics on chats
reverberate
in peoples' minds
they have been pulsed
and repulsed
will they soon be enforced???
true???...or false?

to flow, or not to flow
with the new waters
poured into our pools?

the choice is obvious

some old habits
have to die

if this "The New Normal"
could ensure our safety
and lengthen our lives,
.............why not?

(Empty Gaze)

It was a journey, unwanted
you should've been with me, instead
i walked behind you
i sat beside you
not one bit did you care,
impenetrable, was your stare
i got dizzy from turning around
and ended in front of you, on the same ground.

your catatonic eyes, i sought
your disconnected gaze, i  fought,
i waited, calmly
patiently,
stood there longer...your hand, i was scared to touch
you could've hopped, traipsed, dreamed too much
and i...could've been lost, in your world, on that old cold couch
our very own faded green couch....where, suddenly
unexpectedly
your eyes blinked and appeared startled
they seemed to have awakened
and challenged my stare
a frown surfaced
then a smile...brightened your face.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
oh, the fear is so great
an empty gaze must never again take place!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

you are now with me
next to me....the closest we can be
I feel the wind of your breath,
Your pulse, your heart beating
no more gaps, or spaces to keep us apart
our hands hold tight
bodies, softly pressed
as  we now lay together...
you hug me tight, i know you feel much safer
i hug you back...tighter
i feel much, much better,
cause i'm now holding you...i've got you home,
we are both sheltered...in each other's warmth,
it matters not...we could lie, sit, or slouch,
the two of us...comfortably...in our own old couch.

It doesn't matter to me
where you had been

I'm begging......praying
no more empty gazes would occur
to part us............once more.

Sally A Bayan Dec 2013
Early morning now, at the veranda...
Doing people-watching,
Thinking...just thinking the hours away.
The calendar is on its final page...
In a matter of hours, it is set to be changed...
A new year is coming in shortly, and I am
Wondering  about the days gone by...

I sit comfortably
And my thoughts are set free...
Almost sets me dreaming
With you, rocking...
My hands, sidewards dropping...
But i see a line of several pairs of shoes,
Different sizes, different uses...
Five pairs of shoes remind me,
Of days when a baby's cry echoed,
Made its voice known,
Heard in the still of the night,
Up to the hours of the wee morning.
To and fro we went,
Up, down, down and up...
Until the baby fell into  a deep sleep, and
You and i, slowed, then stopped...

Over and over
We went through the very same routines,
The years stretched on as i counted,
It was four more, to be exact...

Then came the time when
There were just the two of us left,
Swaying to and fro, slowly, slowly,
Up, down, down and up...
Always slowly, never too fast.
No, i wasn't asleep,
Just  recalling,
How we had patiently, gently,
Cared and cradled
Those five baby girls to sleep...
Of different ages, all grown ups now...
Up and about, no longer wanting
To be swayed to sleep again...
Now, like birds that leave their nests
In the morning,
To live their lives in the light of day
Then fly back home before dark, weary,
Owners of these pairs of shoes,
Lined in a row, all in varying hues...

We both worked hard through the years,
I think it's time we thought of ourselves...
I say, you rock me now an hour of nonstop rest,
Then let me "rock the boat" for a while,
Turn you upside down,
Caress your arms and feet
With a soft cotton cloth and some lotion,
Make you shine like before, and free you
From those grains of dirt embedded,
To sharpen your sturdy undercurves,
So we may both have fun once more...
Rock ourselves slowly, smoothly,
Swaying endlessly,
Enjoying, rocking
Our remaining days together...

It's amazing how a child obeys
his, or her heart...finding  cheerful ways
...never tiring...holding excitement at bay
keeping busy, while counting days
'til Christmas is a few blinks away...
^^
i guess, i'll just age in numbers,
believing in magic....forever...
combining magic with the real world...whenever...
^
^
time flies so fast when Christmas is over,
the hours suddenly seem untethered
time gives way to new diaries...new calendars
the old year never lingers...
except in the mind...playing back events of triumphs and flops,
those times of healing  brokenness with fresh hopes
adding more faith  and patience.... to cope,
and when the waiting is taking
too long.....and life seems to be too dragging,
because moons have dimmed...lost their glow,
and balloons slipped off our grips...although
feet are walking on, steps have become weary...
it's time to find new courses.......maybe,
consider new options...a set of changes,
new roads.........new bridges
open eyes and heart......lend our ears
to the ones we have refused to hear,
hear their thoughts, not just the ones we like
.....find time, notice their smiles,
turn our faces to the other side for a while
listen to other people's song
sing a new song!
at this point, what else could go wrong?
^^
and for those that have caused us pain,
our dance with them is done
...the party's over...
^
^
it's time to take action,
let us dream on...let's dance on,
because, we can....because, life goes on
the true lights of Christmas must sparkle on,
.....even when december has gone...

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR TO ALL!!
PEACE TO EVERYONE!

It was one afternoon in New Jersey, quite early,
We were finding a spot on a mall parking lot,
Heels were rushing, people were crossing
Mothers were hurrying...their kids following.
We still waited, yet there were no more...what for?
Our car was not moving, my sister, still was not driving.
Why was she hesitating?
Clearly, sidewalks on both ends were empty
So I raised  my head, a nod or two, then lowered my view.
There were two tiny feet...walking...tiny steps were progressing
A creature, gray, brown, furry...its eyes flitting, like it was wary
Blue sky gave no flurry...pavement was crossed with no hurry...
I was wide eyed...I realized, as I admired,
<{ <{ <{ <{ <{
Upright or hunched, a squirrel is also a pedestrian...

(Recurring Reflections And Beliefs)

Birthday after birthday
i keep looking back...
and find five girls always on my tail,
i see them as my regular paparazzi
when i am in my busiest moments,
when things work out adversely,
against all my best efforts
i find them still tagging along with me...

And then,
i look back at my most trying times
i recall those epiphanies that came to light my way,
how they guided me through,
until i was out of the dark tunnel...
.....until that MOMENT came
when i could hear with just one ear,
i have no regrets, though, or anger within,
for, i could still hear the leaves rustle
when a light breeze blows...
i hear even the dry oak leaves
as they hit the ground,
or when an empty plastic cup
is blown by the wind
from corner to corner of the street...
these days, i am more aware
of the bees buzzing on top of the flowers,
the birds, scattering seeds, helping
create new lives on the ground.....
i still clearly hear the hummingbird flapping its wings,
hovering, as it drinks from the bird feeder,
even as dusk sets in...
i hear the mockingbird...as it closes its wings
and roosts on a pine twig.....

One vital truth keeps me going-
i still have my one good ear
my eyes, my arms, my feet...
always, i am reminded of this question:
why did God endow us with two eyes,
two ears, two hands, two feet?
we lose one, there is still the other
in our daily lives, the same thing applies
among our loved ones and friends,
we lose some, we gain some....
some doors close, another one opens...
second, even third chances are ever waiting,
a fresh start is always there to be claimed...

In this stretch of my life,
i still am faced with choices on paths to take,
those once transitory thoughts
still visit and within me, they stir..
but, reason and good judgment
rise above all...

.....these things, i have realized---
most of what i wanted then...and didn't get,
i have now let go....
selflessness is inevitable,
there are people...things...to be prioritized
over  our own happiness
understanding is important
.....seeing myself here, now,
.....i am happy,
.....i am no longer there
still, i am glad to have been there...

When asked the most puzzling questions,
i have learned to turn
to the wisdom of the children,
i always, always have but one answer....
"...just because...".

At this point and time,
life, still is not perfect...
but i have known how to be calm,
as i face each new day...
perfect, or imperfect,
it doesn't matter anymore,
heart and mind have been honed,
for this knowledge overrules all others:

God is beside me, He is behind me...
He leads me,
He's got me covered...
i have nothing to fear...

the feel of wind to brush against skin
And the sight of trees to breathe in...

But, my feet brought me  here...
why in front of these  rows of stores?
never thought of stopping
to do some impulse shopping...
do i pamper myself with new stuff?
there's no need for a new scent,
with what i have, i am very much content.

There is no smile, no comfort,
seeing these attractions...
there are no reactions......
but, eyes are now seeking...
been unconsciously looking
for something that is unexplainable,
in denial, the mind is, it says: inconceivable...

There, among the shelves...
the search would shortly end...

An image of my face appeared on a mirror
passed by, then suddenly sprung out,
a swish of a shaped light
beside my own face
a passing thought of an image...
it made me smile,
the fog fading, the face, clearing a bit...

When it is within me, this presence,
everywhere, there springs exuberance
it is felt...needing space
not just a shadow, not just a trace...
to bring home, to be with ...
to end this seeking
to end this longing...

Too cumbersome, this weight..
too much to take for one.
there, among those shelves,
nothing could satisfy,
nothing could fill this empty space...
for some reason,  i feel, i know......
i must live on...i must move on
without this face, this presence,
this unattainable existence,
and yet, i must try,
i must still be able to smile....

(Might be too mushy for some, this poem.... I was frustratingly sad while finishing this poem.. then I heard a familiar song being played on the radio...)

      by Nat King Cole

smile though your heart is aching
smile even though it's breaking
when there are clouds in the sky
you'll get by
if you smile
through your fears and sorrow
smile and maybe tomorrow
you'll see the sun come shining through
For you
light up your face with gladness
hide every trace of sadness
although a tear
may be ever so near
that's the time you must keep on trying
smile, what's the use of crying
you'll find that love is still worthwhile
if you just smile...

My sister bought it years ago,
too bad, my mother didn’t
get the chance to enjoy it,
she would've treasured it.

It became a reminder of sadness,
an unintended metaphor, for loss
and pain...it always brought back
that very unexpected, very sad
early morning in February.

Its bright red handle...faded
through weeks, months and
years of changing seasons,
stood on a corner for a long
time...unused, but still intact,
until i took notice one day,
brought it out of its dusty wrap
and opened the red cane umbrella.

A smiling face suddenly flashed
in mind...a presence who, on
early mornings, eagerly recited,
“I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul,”
tirelessly sketched portraits of
unknown faces during unholy hours,
planted, cooked, sewed, while
humming "Ramona"...one who
taught us about silent vows and
undying promises that eventually,
became ours to keep.

It's now an accompanying cane,
the red umbrella...it saves me
from miscalculating steps, from
falling debris, when keeping walls
from crumbling.

Feeling numb, even blind, i am deaf,
i don't want to move or react anymore...
i feel my soul depart from me,
it moves, light as a feather
skimming above deep waters...

my eyes have this fixed gaze
as i drown in a river of tears...
I have wept unceasingly,
day and night....

my feet....

they struggle, wading on sad waters,
the current is harder to deal with, this time...
The sand underneath, softer,
I am
almost sinking....

angels, good souls surround me
easing pain, watching,
pulling me up, so i may not go deeper...

i know,
i feel their love...
but the hurt,
it is all over me...

i am torn between
pain and duties...

i feel the
space
of being alone,

because...

i want to be alone,

to sink
lower

deeper.

b u t,

this sense of selflessness,
it prevails...
for their very sake....
i must be with them...hold their hands...
lead them through...

they, that surround me...
they are, what's left of me,
they are...the rest of me...

it is most transparent...
i could feel it... now...

there is joy...found in pain...

Thinking of Maria...
Sally A Bayan Dec 2013
Mind and body were weary...it was the
Third night of nine anticipated dawn masses...
Most people were yawning,
Fighting the urge to nod and start snoring...
Trying to finish what they started,
To have their petitions granted.

The Reverend read the gospel,
Emphatic, spotlight was on him as he preached
About greetings, prayers and good wishes.
He didn't want to see more sagging heads
Among his audience,
So the Reverend spoke louder,
In high tones, but with a smile,
Aiming for his sermon to reach every ear.
Surprisingly,
The sleepy atmosphere became lively...
Every face turned to a smiley,
Laughing, murmuring about the funny stories
The good Reverend was sharing
During his homily.

Recessional hymn started...
We all rose from the pews.
On my way out,
I bumped into somebody
I had avoided meeting for sometime now...
But there she was, in front of me...
We both stopped, at a loss for words,
With no ****** reactions.
It so happened that
The good Reverend passed us by...
He looked, absorbing emotions...
He bowed his head,
Then turned to me, and smiled...
I sensed the air, the hint.

Without much fuss,
I smiled at the unavoidable someone,
The one with the unwelcome face,
Who brought some unpleasant news
With her usual audacity.
No more turning back,
I was already there, in that part of the evening's drama...
So I held her hand,
And as she hugged me,
I heard myself utter, "Shalom!"
The way the Reverend said it in his sermon.
Why was it not so difficult that moment,
When I used to be so unwilling before?
But...it was over, done.
We went our separate ways...
I could not believe I told her
"Hello!  Goodbye!  Peace!"

Walking home, a thought kept nagging me...
I dwelt on it, for it had happened twice already.
In the church, strange things do happen,
Strange occurrences that lead to
Happy endings.
I recalled the good Reverend...
He didn't usually pass my way...
Why that strange but encouraging, soothing smile
As he passed us...WHY?
Also, I could never forget his homily...
His funny, lively stories
About a greeting, a prayer...
A word that brought good wishes...
A single word that said a lot---
" S H A L O M ! "

***I've heard it said to someone,  have read about it,  but didn't really give it serious thought...
but when I said it to someone that moment, I felt I knew the word all my life...***

I see the sky
in hues of blue,
so vast...
so unreachable...
I look at it on a clear day
and I travel along with my eyes....
I start chasing rainbows
hoping to find at the end,
my *** of gold......YOU!

Any time of day,
the breathtaking colors
of the sky make me sigh,
however ecstatic, or unpleasant
life may be...whatever goes on down
here, she is up there...ever-present,
like a parent...i may be infinitesimal,
yet, i'm never lost in her
immeasurable span of attention.

the sky is a part of me,
and i, of her,
her colors affect my daily decisions,
gray with rains tell me to change plans,
on sunny days, chores are smooth-sailing.
at night, its dome of dark blue, graced
by the moon and stars in many shapes,
makes me recall some immortal tales.

i squint, looking at her vast spaces
as if i'm roaming upon a sunny meadow,
as i go back to my days of triumphs,
my failures...especially
my best moments.

i was born under this glorious firmament,
she saw my first steps,
and all the firsts in my life,
she'll be watching, until her clouds
start bringing rain upon
my withered ground.

Eyes chanced upon a brown object
Nestled on  a crowd of multi-colored subjects
A bunch of dried and fresh leaves,
Small, thin and soft spikes of twigs
And I wondered.....how on earth
Did fibers and strips of polyester sack
Get included in this mix?

One would think it might fall, and be slung
But it stayed put, steady, where it hang
I was trying to figure it out:
A cylnder, at first thought...but I had my doubts
I realized, it was a crooked oblong
And, from its opening on one side, came the soft songs
A small part of which, was attached
To the thorny Bougainvillea branch.

Strange.....for it was small...yet steep
A human hand could never go deep
You wouldn't think it could contain anything
And yet...inside it, were resting
Three tiny eggs...warming
And eventually, would be hatching.

Soon, the Red Palm and Sweetsop trees
Buzzed with activities
Birds of many kinds, watched, upon the bay window eave,
High on the electric cables...they perched and wouldn't leave
To and fro.......high and low, they flew
The air was filled with bird sounds i never knew

Soon, too, soft tweeting was heard
Along with the louder chirping of the older birds
Then came that morning, when, a birdling,
Eagerly, tested its wings,
Then fell off its nest
Down to the roots of the Red Palm tree
Where it almost met its final rest...
Suddenly, came to the rescue, two big palms
That put the birdling back inside its home
And reinforced the nearly displaced nest...

Both birdling and nest, were put to a test....

Today, other birds fly around this once busy space
Where life's significant phases
Inevitably took place,
Lonely and deserted now,
For the birdlings are fully grown
They're  now flying on their own...

From my rocking chair, I could see
Among those entangled twigs
Hidden among a crowd of sprigs
Still ably rests
An abandoned strange nest
That once told the story
Of an Olive-backed sunbird....and its glory...

Time spent traveling is time wisely spent,
hours are filled with enriching experiences
and soul-searching moments

my morning trip to San Diego was such...
my eyes feasted on a blue-green ocean,
with daring surfers atop cresting waves;
and then there were my fellow farers...

the atmosphere inside the Amtrak
was a mix of moods...of voices of folks...
silent ones slept the whole trip...several,
had coffee and bread, while reflecting...
some were already working ahead of time,
giving instructions via their mobile phones...
a few were smiling, taking life positively,
maybe, dwelling on pleasant memories;
others wore serious faces...in deep thought,
maybe thinking of love's and life's unfairness,
sad realities they leave behind each morning,
the same ones they go home to each night.

boarding a train is one chapter,
getting off is another.....the platform is
where situations end, or, a fresh start awaits:
new job, a family...finding one's self somewhere,
ending a relationship...moving on when a loved
one dies...drifters are ever, "just passing through,"
they go....wherever the train takes them...

trips are inward journeys...the hours open
and clear our minds, leaving realizations
and wiser perspectives over nagging issues
we shun...or, defy; we try to change what
can be changed in our lives...and accept
with peace...what...cannot be changed...

we are on a journey...we are farers all,
...........in this train...called life...
