Hello everyone,

I'm so very sorry … I feel horrible doing this, but I have no choice. You see, I have published my first book on Amazon/Kindle! This piece (and many others) had to be taken down because they do not allow published material to be available online for free. (Go figure) I wanted to leave the shell of the posts because I felt compelled to leave all your helpful and loving comments. (Silly sentimental, I know), but I also didn't want to just have the pieces disappear without an explanation. I feel bad enough as it is!

I owe ALL of you so, SO much for all of your reads, love, and support. It was YOU that gave me the gumption to FINALLY get off my **** and publish! Thank you all for the warm comments, camaraderie, and encouragement! I will still be here, reading, uploading and just being the Rascal that I am. How could I EVER leave you guys?

The book is called “The Way I See It – FictionPhilosophySoul Food” and it will be FREE for the first few days on Kindle Select, so watch for it, if you are interested. I hope that you go and grab it. If you do, I would also hope that you find it worthy, you would leave me a good review. That will help me get in the public eye! Soon afterward (2-3 days or so), it will be available in paperback.

Find the book(s) here: www.amazon.com/author/jeff.gaines

Or find the book(s), and all about me, here: www.JeffGaines.world

Soon after, I also hope to have my first novel (a supernatural thriller), called “Wanderer” available as well!

  Wish me luck!

                                Big, Biggest Love,

This is my generational piece about the sad state of affairs that (anti)social media has brought upon the youth of today. I am appalled that the politicians and bureaucrats would rather make gun laws than address this horrible scourge. IMHO, THIS is the REAL root of the problem causing these mindless shootings.

And NOBODY is addressing this!

WHY?

If in the name of commerce, then we have slipped into a very much darker time than even I am imagining right now ...

Their obsession with this mindless, empty lifestyle has made them all but sociopathic. They engage in whisper campaigns and organized, yes ORGANIZED, bullying in order to keep themselves and their "followers" in some sort of twisted and depraved "pecking order" on a scale the likes of which no generation before has EVER witnessed. It has, and continues to, cause the victims of this pack mentality to commit harm to others in backlash  and even SUICIDE to be freed from its hateful and tormenting assault.

Their starving search for acknowledgement, recognition, validation and respect has led them to posting "shock"-type behaviors, like showing their "junk", or some ill-gotten loot or another person in a compromising or embarrassing situation ... and even threatening (and now carrying out) SHOOTINGS! All in their screaming request for attention.

BUT ... this need can NEVER be fulfilled by a cold, glass screen. The very thing they are seeking these desperately needed things from IS, in fact, the VERY THING that is, and will continue to, KEEP them from it!

They are losing touch with their own feelings and sadder still, what it means to have a real life and a real friend!

I've YET to see a screen that can reach out and give you a HUG!

Also, this work has NOTHING to do with the Band called Company of Thieves. They are good friends of mine and I speak to Marc, the guitarist all the time. I simply "stole" their moniker (and the very idea of that phrase) and a few trivia's about them, mischievously, to use as a vehicle to tell this tale about how the youth of today don't HAVE friendships, they STEAL them, literally AND figuratively!

I LOVE the way it turned out. It was perfect.

If you've never heard of them, you will. If you don't wish to wait, just Google them or better still, search for a playlist or their new EP "Better Together" on YouTube. They are one of my all-time favorite bands and just NOTHING short of AMAZING!

You can (and will) thank me later!

In this society,
you cannot be at peace with who you are.
You must always find something wrong
with your biological makeup
and every choice that has shaped your personality.

They say, "love yourself,"
yet shame and call those who do narcissists.
Well,
I chose to separate myself from this hypocrisy.

I am beautiful,
I am clever,
I am funny,
I am not perfect,
I am me.

I chose to accept all of it;
the ups and the downs,
my vices and virtues,
every single experience I have in life
that will help me grow
into who I am becoming.

**** society,
**** the media,
and *******.
I apologize that this has no structure and is just utter word *****... You really can't even call this poetry.
I've been going back through my writings from a few years ago and feel they have more of a flow and style.  I'm obviously very different from who I was then, however, so I'm re-defining my style.
Sometimes you have to destroy it all and find the new out of the chaos (word *****)

we are a generation of sedation,

discursive, empty, godless children,

raised in the age of social media,

where the height of our emotions

lie in our 'thoughts and prayers',

and the best we can do is a touch of a button,

a share, a like, a tweet, a reaction documented,

rumination we pretend we've borne.

is it our intrepid numbness to it all?

after all, we are best known for

the plight for attention and validation,

or rather yet our entitlement and our narcissism,

terrorism doesn't have a face unless i see it,

and it begs the millennial question,

are we just a bunched of depressed sociopaths?

or is it because we are the privileged 20%,

nestle in the fringes of developed nations,

with our precious technology and our internet,

unbeknownst to a third world, a third world

we mourn according to how it benefits us.

after all, don't forget that in an emergency,

there is always 'thoughts and prayers'.

A perfectly linear shape painted in gold
Is what you see
Through Instagram pictures Facebook posts Snapchat videos
The tacit life
I lead in the virtual stairway
I am living the life!
So you say
You painted my life in the most shimmering color
Turn on every light in the room to make it brighter
Gazing with admiration
Sometimes
Most of the time
With jealousy
Seduced by the lure of the blue light dependency
Turning this perfect lie into some meditation
And make it my definition
An image I’ve built to cover the within
A perfect fragmented me I post on social media
A habit I borrow for social gatherings
A behavior forced into me
For the sake of society!
An illusion so fragile made out of eggshell
A shell covering the true essence of ME
Uncovering myself for the world to see
The egg wall and make believes shattering
To life unpredictable burdens
That perfect golden shell cannot bare life’s hurdles
Holding something beautiful that doesn’t curdle
I am more of what you see
More of what I let you believe
More of society’s standards
More of you
More of me
I contained beauty and imperfections
I contained colors and bricks
Strengths and weaknesses
Enough to **** in all life’s miseries
And to also reflect confidence and vulnerabilities
I am not just one color
I am every shades
Every undertones
Every hues that follow the changes
I am the intense
The neon
The eclectic
The iridescent
From the lightest to the darkest
The contrasting
The complementing
The chromatic
I am in nature in art in paintings
Everywhere
I am every northern lights dancing to my own ballet
Don’t just paint me with your own palettes
Crack me open
And see what’s inside
For there you will see
My true colors
Inspired by one of my brother drawings

we are all afraid.

when we hide under the static lights of our intergalactic worlds,

behind the screens of our digital age,

it is all because we cannot take risks,

risks of rejection, being unloved, tossed aside

and forgotten like a page dog-eared and bookmarked with a faded polaroid taken

with shaky hands in a half unread book.

we are all afraid.

it is better to say nothing at all,

and let it hang stagnant between two

sad souls, rather than take a leap

and hope- because hope is stupid.

it is a flimsy plastic emotion, on the verge of breaking because

that's what people are- fragile and weak.

we are all afraid.

from a five-year-old refusing to learn

how to ride a bike to an eighteen-year-old

runaway, who looks at a crumpled map,

lost with a chip in her shoulder

and we fear the unknown but we disguise it

under tacky bright yellow stickers

with fake happy slogans that make no sense.

we are all afraid.

we wipe the tears off our cheeks and

prays silently that nobody sees,

because then they'll ask if we're

okay and when we really want to say we're not,

we swallow the truth and plaster a smile.

we are all afraid.

and it's the most human feeling-

the sharp sting of fear and it's telling us maybe,

just maybe

its because we are scared

that maybe nobody really loves us

at all.
the human condition, yo.
