This year,
we found angels
and demons,
heroes and cons,
standing upon and
deep beneath
this world.

I never liked horror films,
but it seems as if
it's our only reality.

Question, Butterfly;
How does it feel to be seen as better,
Because you are the prettier family member,
I'm pretty,
Because you're delicate,
I'm delicate,
Because you're a symbol,
I have meaning,
Tell me, how do you feel,
Looking down on me...

I will not be used as a symbol of the misunderstood,
Treated like a monster because I am from the hood,
When I, too, had a dream that the world changed,
Where the street was safe for everyone because we were together,
No one was hungry, because the food didn't go to waste,
And there was less stress because we slowed down our pace,
I dreamed of a world were we progress,
Hatred is called out, challenged, defeated, history wasn't repeated,
The future wasn't a dream, but the present,
Thankful for the day we have, the day we will have.
No longer feeling entitled to anything, but humble and grateful,
I accept the world for what it is, but it must progress,
For if it is to be a world I desire to live in, it must change,
It will change,
I will see to it that it does, so long as I live on it.
And my change is for progression.
We will move forward,
We will live,
In the name of love,
In the light of peace,
I am determined.

Virtue signaling and destruction abound
A uniting goal nowhere to be found
Too high on emotion for critical thought
Pallets of bricks the anonymous bought

The stamping of boots upon human faces
Shadows fueling a war of the races
History repeated every four years
For votes from a populous motivated by fear

Unequally democratic,
Laws made equally,
punishments biased.

Kills for the Black man,
Patience for the white.

"I can't breathe"
He cried.
Phones recorded,
Yet
He died.

A black man's life,
At a packet of cigarettes price.

A white man kills,
Yet still alive.

Justice we seek.
What they had promised to provide.
Yet we take on these streets.
Again, to fight.

We take on these streets with your name in bold.
History books will proclaim you as gold.

In hopes that your name will be the last.

We will fight 7 years for your 7 minutes.
We will breathe.
We will breathe.

2020 is not the year.

2020 is full of despair.

On the verge of another world war,

then faced with a pandemic,

like never seen before.

Once again, this year has struck.
Stay strong! Sending my best <3

From the rings of fire
Where thousand tongues leap
Colonizing the breath
And conspiring revenge deep
Aiming to settle its hunger
By releasing venomous fume
I do wonder,
If our days are manship doom
Sly rips of shrewdy storms
Hail down the tempered roads
Act of god, it is so...
Who decodes these codes?
Shut the windows and doors
Shut your mouth tight
Out in the day or dark
There's definitely going to be a fight
We know the reasons gain
The sessions and dreadful days
There's enormous clueless pain
Yet, we wander our own ways...

Too many sad happenings this 2020 has brought and is still ongoing.
Steven Forrester May 2020
This is a verse for George
This is a poem for Philando
This is a memory of Oscar
Continuing the fight for Malcolm
Venerating the wisdom of Martin
This is a call to action
Even if just a fraction
Causes this cause to gain traction
For people tired of the inaction
The people have spoken
And decades have passed
Nothing has changed
Protesters still getting gassed
With years behind them
Trying to stay quiet
One ******
Two murders
A thousand
It's no surprise
That this protest is now a riot
Flames flitting in and out of frame
Guns glinting
as bootlickers offer more of the same
Tin badges holding themselves
As above the rest of us
I scream in disgust
What gives you the right
To ****** my neighbors?
What gives you the right
To brutalize my friends?
These fires ignite a memory
And makes me sing
Noting the similarity
To Martin,
and also Rodney king
I'll stop now
My angry rambling
I'll leave you with a quote
Most would think
It was said by Malcolm
But it was said by Dr. King
It's not absurd
He said it
"A riot is the language of the unheard"
That is the wisdom of Martin
That's why we continue to fight for Malcolm
That's why I remember Oscar
I wrote this poem for Philando
I wrote this verse for George

I understand that I may never understand,
However, I will still stand.

This is not to be said in ignorance towards many topics, but in the matter of empathy and being an advocate regarding many areas, some of them being equality/humanitarianism, the LGBTQ community, mental health awareness, etc.
