We see but we don’t feel
Apathy
We hear but we don’t speak
Injustices
We allow the innocent to be Consumed
While we give praise to the wicked
A blind eye turned
A ravens feast
Laid bare the pickings-
Thus, the glass house shatters from within
Its columns of shame is
All that remains…
…we the people

Dear homeless man on the side of the street
Begging for a dollar, a smile, or a treat
I’m sorry I looked away
I’m sorry I pretended like I didn’t see you
I need to shelter myself from the truth
I want to shelter myself from you
See I can never be a shelter to you
I could tell you there is rest
In the shelter of the Most High
I just assumed you’re probably high
I can’t handle the guilt of greed
So I blame you for panhandling
Now please let me drive by
Before I’m caught up in a drive-by

Dear homeless man on the side of the street
Begging for a dollar, a smile, or a treat
I’m sorry I looked away
I’m sorry I pretended like I didn’t see you
You’re in my blind spot
I cannot see you
If I pull up my blinds
Then I might spot you
So I stay in my dark room
Where I picture a world
Captured in imagination
And developed in reality
I stay in my dark room
I time travel with a flashback
I picture the world in just white
I picture the world in just black
So I expose the injustice
Until it’s black and white
Now I see the picture right
When the law ceases to bring justice,
The law ceases to be just.

And when the law ceases to be just,
We, the people, must cease to be silent.
The bitten tongue bares blood of the same red worn by the acting hand.

By pen or sword so fight the war or be lost to no man's land,
Until a man's a man in every eye,
We have failed eachother.

Upon this rock,
We shall build no more,
Not on ill foundations.

Upon this rock,
We build no more,
As we tear down all we stood for.

Life matters.

when i say black lives matter,
i'm saying all lives matter
but right now our white people
aren't being murdered
for earning extra money for their families
or for a broken taillight,
it is the black people who are murdered
for representing all that is human
black lives are the lives
that are buried in the ground
and painted on white faces
because they're going to a music festival.
black lives are the lives
that result in names
printed in fine print,
displayed by candles and tears,
they are the lives
men in blue take each day
because their job
is to serve and protect.
who are you serving and protecting?
take your blue suit off
and put on a kkk robe
because the oath that you took
is not the oath you are practicing.
so when i say black lives matter,
i am saying there is a great injustice
i am saying save those people
i am saying our brothers and sisters are dying
i am saying they are our family.
all lives cannot matter
until black lives do.
Today I cried, my heart is rent
For somebody I didn't know.
And for the fact that, nowadays,
They say "that's just the way things go".

A man was slain without just cause,
An officer behind the gun;
And instantly, divided we
Debate justice, where there is none.

Regardless of public record,
The man was slain for not one sin-
He died because of ignorance.
He died because of his dark skin.

The officer might go to trial,
And just as likely, he'll go free.
And we'll be told "respect the cops,
They're here for their community."
Protect the community?  ****.  Legal immunity. Wholesale ****** without impunity.

What is evil, what is good?
Is it for us to decide, just because we could?
So many laws have been written down,
Book after book, the world is a paper town.
But life is never pure black and white,
Sometimes it's hard to see what is right.
Sadly some efforts are all in vain,
So criminals are left unpunished and victims in pain.
Justice has been served, how nice would that be,
But that's only wishful thinking, don't you agree?
Gave us oil and gave us matches,
didn't give us fire...
Told us we were on our own but,
kept us on the wire.
Stale green heads of famous dead ones
always ruling us.
On their backs we write reminders
of in whom we trust.

Vicious cycle, circumstance will
find us set aflame.
Take a breath and burn to ash leave
nothing but a name.
Lies in print and moving pictures
bought at market price;
cold and hollow, hard to swallow,
still our favorite vice.

Fundamental narcissism
glory be to we~
Sinners drenched in good intentions
wild dichotomy.
Liars, haters, instigators,
nothing good to say.
Everything will be just fine if
they don't have to pay.

Final cycle, broken bible
read selectively,
love and hate up for debate but
neither one is free.
"Follow blindly close behind me"-
so the lemming said.
We'll find out who's wrong and right, as
soon as we're all dead.
Religious freedom
Ceases to be
An excuse
You can use
When you make
The mistake
Of thinking with it
You can take
Other people's
Freedom
Away from them

It's a dangerous world that we live in,
But a dangerous world we create,
Where the wrong are too often forgiven,
And the right are convicted of hate.
Ron Gavalik May 2016
Today depression visited
a quiet despair one feels
from grave injustice

Driving home
the world fell silent
On one street corner
stood a man of color
in ***** work pants
He frowned behind a gray beard
his eyes distant

He and I shared a truth
that while the poor wept
those who represent hatred
celebrated
again
