But how can I live
When I hear
My heart beating
Not in my chest
But in your hands
Lady Grey Aug 2018
Energy rushing
             Adrenaline humming
             Sweat dripping

No one on the street
Hear that beat
Pump that pedal
Feel that beat

             Air rushing
             Engine humming
             Rain dripping

Alive is the night

The music
              Throbbing/thrumming

So loud
                             Brazen beat
                             Boiling blood
             Feverish

Alive is the night

                      As am I

Why I am so Beat

Something about...the road, old shoes and sore feet,
motorcycles and wine,
greasy diners and last dimes,
half a stale Hoagie left to eat.
Man, that's
why I am so Beat.

Headed out west from town to town.
Dry-rot houses, faded signs,
Pioneers in rags, so behind the times.
This dead world keeps puttin’ me in a funk,
Pal, that’s why
I’d rather just stay drunk.

Girls and boys in every bar,
From Kansas to Colorado,
Hit me up for drinks and manila tar,
Trying sadly to feel what I do,
Man it’s hard;
That’s why I feel so scarred.

I came out west to find my soul
And saw emptiness instead.
Don’t ask me where I’m heading next,
Cause I don’t know.
I’m friggin hexed.
All I know is drive & drink & sleep;
Man, you know
That’s why I am so beat.

Inspired by a 50's series of pulp novels, *Why I am So Beat* Nolan Miller. I wanted to capture the same disillusion felt by Beat poets or travelers that the Hippies later felt.

Dialogues with rain
Goes on beating all fears;
Even inundation!

Maybe years passed by you with no hope in the horizon!

Maybe hours wasted in things you didn't feel them!

Maybe breathes sneaked away without feeling where they went!

Then that unplanned minute happens when your eyes touch that person while he is in front of you projecting that peace that you were fighting for!

When your heart gives that beat, were you straying for ages to know you are alive!

Then...

That is the moment when you realise that you reached one of your Meaningful Beat in your life!
its weather
a shot
with her
round my
waist with
fire in
heat mire
night and
wake again
dawn with
the smoke
in their
tweet and
wake early
paper's beat
a gradual
movement afoot

you used to take my breath away
steal it out of my lungs
and make it into a braid
to wrap it around my blood
you I said needed it
as we both took flight
down your neighbourhood street
rain falling into my smile
I thought we were infinite
sharing a one of a kind love
we'd share with our kids
you were my vital drug
now, you still take my breath away
but you're taking too much
it hurts so much to stay
but the pain isn't enough
you breathed my last bit of air
and broke my breaking heart too
you just don't think it's fair
that I no longer breathe and beat for you
breathe & beat for yourself.

A composition, bordered by brown track, white shelter and
yellow line;

off-white, smear-windowed building (background)
                                  hexagonal floors, brutalist mandala;
triangle across the frame, a *****, polluted structure
                                  one half of a red cross logo, boarded windows
                                  - chipboard, corrugation, MDF;
and Southern Rail green is grass in the lower foreground
                                  arrows, words, people.
East Croydon Station, July 2018 (see cover photo)

As part of 'View from...', a collection of observational poetic experiments, whereby I allow myself five minutes to finish a poem regarding my surroundings at that time.
