I was chasing down the moon
Burning concave, sickle bow ahead

They thought you were cheese
They praised you
They feared you
They studied you
They tried to lasso you
They landed on you
They forgot you

And now I'm staring you down
Plain and laid in my sights
The deer to my lonesome, vague headlights

As I barrel into her labyrinth
I'm yielding onto her, and as I go
She eclipses the sky beneath her
And it's shrinking in my view

It's as so the distance
Barring us both,
Is fracturing with every inch of every mile
By time, we will collide in beautiful unison

The explosion wound send to fragments,
The line dividing
The candor of life
And the uncertain ether

Celestial dust and shrapnel
Will rain down a new gravity

Heaven involved itself;
Instead I am now driving with the moon
We team south as she occupies
The passenger side

She's my hitch hiker
Or if she were Bonnie
I'd have to be Clyde
We're gonna rob that big bank in the sky, baby

Weaving stories of home and the road
And love and loss and time and hope
And destinations and longings
And belongings and beginnings

And we disagree and we fear things
And we share dreams and we lose sleep
And we split gas and we drive fast
And we smoke grass and she laughs

But time passed
And she was due a few miles ahead
So she climbed to the back seat
To rest for a moment

And I drove on
With the familiarity she shone
She was quiet now
And so I kept to my thoughts and the road

I'd look back on occasion just to assure
She was still a pendant on the drapery of night
I glanced about enough to spot her
From the corner of my eye

And I sigh at the strike of reticence
But flood with saccharine
I remember her glow as a child
She was in a sidecar on every road trip

Again I turn to her,
But she made no appearance
Like a thief, she fled by window,
Not even a disturbance to the wind

I smiled for our ride together
And the protection she laid over me
It was finished now,
But everything always is

I caught the blemish in my rear view
As I moved on
She was a speckle behind me
And being swallowed by the hills and buildings

I couldn't know what anticipated in the remote
But I remember my old friend
As the slack between us
Became taut and expansive

I hear the moon is nice
This time of year,
And since it lacks an atmosphere,
There would be no storms to fear.
Sunny days and vistas clear...
I bet I could see my house from there!
Just leave the doors of the house shut tight,
And live alone, there in the night,
With all the world, there in my sight.
I'd have the view to keep me right,
And stars as friends to salve my plight.
Whirling 'round in endless flight,
I'd dance with Earth in points of light,
'Til Earth and Moon next reunite.
I thank the maker for this moment.
A view so potent.
Endless waters kissing a setting sun.
And as the stars begin their dance,
And the moon, her serenade.
I break down my latest gift,
And sift.
In hope of finding the perfect high.
Because I lost her once before,
And now she's the hardest thing to find.

“This is where it stops, this is where it begins
Every moment, every day
This is where it stops, this is where it begins...”

It began with a glance at my scope
There blossomed a tinge of hope
That maybe the moon would find a companion
In an astronomer like me

So I tried to get closer ‘til I got weary…
For some nights, it showed its warmth
But most nights were just a blur...

Maybe the moon is destined to be admired from a distance
Or maybe the moon wanted another ‘heavenly' body
Who knows? Who knows?

Here I am troubled by uncertainty
and constantly baffled by the moon’s inconsistency
and I do not want this anymore
Not today, not tonight
So maybe it’s time to pack up my scope
For tonight, I will not be looking up
For tonight, this is where it will all stop.

People say you are a mere satellite
but to me, you are the center of the night
under the blanket of darkness, I see your light
how you struggle to illuminate others with all your might

Absurd as this may sound
slowly, I began to understand
what shouting to the void really means...

Please listen as I tell you
I only have my lens for you
out of all the celestial bodies in the sky
you are the one that captured my eyes

I adore all your phases
love all your scars
but to you I'm just an idle dreamer
observing from a far.

mumble your way through my mind
and pick apart every memory you come across.
just for now
tell me of the starlight glittering blue and white in the sky.
hold each speck in the palm of your hand
and then let them fall back into the earth
when they shine no longer.
keep me by your side, devout astronomer.
and let your hands
guide me through the sky.
I once threw a cowl
that wrung upon my shoe
while it vegged but flew afoul
so truant like a kite
knew my carbazole as a butterfly in flight
this quasi-stellar garment
whet these galaxies afar
with their assertions I jogged
a dwarf star scoped such constellation
with incredible clarity unblemished again.

Twinkle twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are
A ball of gas or so we think
A solar system gone extinct

I'll go drink then drive my car

Your love is my disease
So sick, got me falling to my knees
I'm begging you
please don't leave
But you can't hear me
Too busy falling like a meteor
Creating all these internal craters
Before you
I was the sun
I used to shine so bright
You cut me down
And now I'm just a small star
In your universe
Which is so infinite
a small star to you
