Santa's sleigh team
Twelve reindeer hooked up to the sleigh
One for each month through December
Santa said "That's a lot of reindeer names"
"For this guy to remember"

Santa said "I must lose one"
But he could not pick just who
So, he sat and made the choice
"Instead, I'll just drop two"

Ten reindeer hooked up to the sleigh
But two were always late
"I can't drop one, they both must go"
So, now the sleigh had eight

Eight reindeer hooked up to the sleigh
To Santa, this was right
Enough to pull the sleigh above
And fly into the night

But one was waiting in the wings
You all know how this goes
Whenever there's a real bad storm
He call on Rudolph and his nose

Now, Santa's team is ready
To take their Christmas flight
You'll know they've been when you hear
"Merry Christmas and Good Night"

My Heart holds on
Of all the things I've said and done
I can't remember most
My mind just lets them disappear
Like a wave upon the coast

I remember faces
It's names I can not find
My heart holds on to so much more
Than is buried in my mind

My heart holds on
My heart holds on
Even things I think are gone
My heart keeps holding on

Some things that I recall
I'm not sure If I did
The stories kinda muddy
My mind has them well hid

Good times, and the bad ones
My heart it knows so well
My mind has gone and altered
The truth, I can not tell

My heart holds on
My heart holds on
Even things I think are gone
My heart keeps holding on

Sometimes I'll remember
My mind and heart agree
The times we were together
My heart, and you and me

If I get muddled,
And the memories don't fit
My heart might just open
My mind just a bit

My heart holds on
My heart holds on
Even things I think are gone
My heart keeps holding on

My heart remembers much more
Than my mind will ever do
It remembers every word
My love, I heard from you

My mind, it is a builder
It's built a strong and mystic wall
It only tell me what it wants
While my heart, it tells me all

My heart holds on
My heart holds on
Even things I think are gone
My heart keeps holding on

The Monster Comes At Night
We're fighting a great battle
No one knows how long for
We've lost a lot already
We're gonna lose lots more

Washing hands, and distance
Help when you not home
But, you must beware the monster
When your'e by yourself, alone

It watches in the daytime
It just teases in the light
But, watch out in the darkness
The monster comes at night

It attacks you when you're sleeping
By blocking off your air
It attacks just like a ninja
You cough, and bam...it's there

You can't find a position
On your left side or your right
You're senses are alerted
The monster comes at night

You walk around dead tired
Sleep in pockets you can grasp
Asleep, easily waking
One cough leads to a gasp

No one there to help you
Your'e stuck home all alone
Watching reruns on the telly
Playing card games on the phone

Like a good old elm street nightmare
your eyes don't close too tight
You know, you may not wake up
Because The monster comes at night

Be careful when you're sleeping
Sleep leaning or upright
For you may not see tomorrow
Because the monster comes at night.

Frozen
It was a night like this
Back in old T. O.
When a woman froze to death
In the cold and frigid snow

I passed her in the morning
I saw her laying on the grate
With all she owned around her
I did not then know her state

It was early nineteen eighty one
The polar winds did blow
A woman froze to death that night
In the cold and frigid snow

It was right outside the local "Y"
The doors were locked up tight
She lay upon the heating grates
To make it through the night

Passers by ignored her
They just looked away instead
In the morning when I passed her
I did not know that she was dead

I think back on that image
Of her laying with her stuff
I ask myself "when will we stop"
"and say enough's enough"

The homeless are not garbage
Disposable, their not
A woman froze to death outside
Is this the best we've got?

A woman froze to death one night
And no one seemed to care
Life goes on with her now gone
As though she was not there

Like the woman back on Church Street
In the cold Toronto snow
The image now is frozen
Like the woman in T.O.
passed by a woman who froze to death in early 1981 outside of the local YMCA

When we met
You've led me places beyond description
You've led me down a different path
You've taken me to destinations
You've made me cry and made me laugh
You've been my rock and inspiration
You've pushed me more than you could know
You've made me someone better
You had me at hello

I've done things I would not consider
Because of how you make me feel
I've become a better person
Because of knowing what is real
I've learned to share and be less selfish
Because of you and what you say
I've found a new and better person
You made me who I am today

I never knew that love had power
Like it does when I'm with you
It's a feeling beyond description
It makes us one instead of two
Years ago when I first saw you
It was just minutes before I'd go
And then I got your invitation
And you had me at hello
What

Bluesman inspiration
Sunday morning silence
Like the eye inside a storm
The street was empty, vacant
This would be the brand new norm

The windows all were shuttered
The doors were closed up tight
No one in Cy's doorway
To recover from the night

The church doors were both open
A note pinned to the door
The back, open to the alley
The note, "pray" and nothing more

Giannis, door was locked up
Joe was sleeping in the back
A note said "order through the window"
The window, open just a crack

The bar was also locked tight
A note said "coffee, but no beer"
"yell through the broken window"
"Don't worry we will hear"

Broken Spines had in the window
A large note for all to see
The note said "Cooking up some chili"
"Come back here around three"

Cy came in the back way
Taped his note up on the door
"Don't worry about paying"
"Call if you need more"

The street was still in motion
It had life, but none to see
Today, and for a while
The street folk lived for free

The city closed the main roads
The street, forgotten to most folk
The old man, sat on the curbside
Looking up, he lit a smoke

People ordered up their coffee
Got themselves a bite to eat
Stood in line outside, all waiting
Social distance...now six feet

Most folks on the street now
Lived above their stores or near
The street was still in action
Strong and silent, cloaked in fear

While life was now adapting
A sound, blew by upon the air
The Bluesman, oh so gentle
Was singing, but, from where?

The alley by Gianni's
Was empty, not a sound
But, still there heard the music
With the singer not around

The music, it got louder
The wind brought it to the street
The stores opened windows,
To hear the Bluesman's vocal treat

It took some time to figure
Where the music was relayed
He was on Gianni's rooftop
He just sat up there and played

A special Sunday concert
With stops for "medicin" now and then
Brought the street folks altogether
They were one now, once again

The Bluesman sang The Beatles
He sang U2, he sang the Band
He sang all the Guthries
He sang about the land

He sang of inspiration
Of not being all alone
How we were in this together
His message simple, inspired tone

He sang songs that got you dancing
In the stores, that's what they did
All alone, but, with the Bluesman
Dancing like a little kid

Some sang, but no one heard them
They sang loud and didn't care
They were exactly like the Bluesman
Singing proudly to the air

He sang for near an hour
Folks below yelled up their praise
The Bluesman brought The street together
In the most beautiful of ways

He finished up by singing
Two songs that made this right
He sang "Imagine" by John Lennon
Then he gave them "Silent Night"

He made his way down slowly
He was older than he was
He did this for his people
He did this just because

People started singing
You could hear it all around
But, the Bluesman grabbed some chili
Found his tent, and hunkered down

Inspired, I would say so
That is just life on the street
A group of flawed, broke people
You'd be lucky should you meet

A family, but not really
They were one, but, many too
No one here is really special
They are all like me....and you.

I'll be home for Christmas
I'll be home for Christmas baby
Just you wait and see
There'll be an extra present
Underneath the tree
I'll be home for Christmas baby
We'll be together you and me
I tell you babe
that you can count on me

Remember all the good  times
We had, not long ago
We'd roast chestnuts in the fire
And make angels in the snow
I'll be home for Christmas baby
I just wanted you to know
It'll be a family Christmas
I just wanted you to know

I have to tell you baby
I've been clean for ninety days
I no longer see our future
Through a blurry, fuzzy haze
I have to say I love you
And that I have changed my ways
Just take me back
For one last chance I pray

I am sorry for the battles
I don't know why we fought
I've looked back and I've determined
That most were all my fault
Like the kid there in the kitchen
Red handed I was caught
Now I know that I have found
The redemption I have sought

I'll be home for Christmas baby
Just you wait and see
There'll be an extra present
Underneath the tree
I'll be home for Christmas baby
We'll be together you and me
I tell you babe
that you can count on me
Every kiss begins with Kay..
Kay must be real easy!!!

One last hurrah
I just want one last hurrah
Before I ring the bell
One more celebration
A story others tell

It doesn't need to be so grand
But it has to make folks smile
When someone maybe speaks of me
Once I've been gone a while

Maybe I could save a cat
Stuck up in someone's tree
But, I've a decent fear of heights
So, that's no good for me

I could stop a robbery
A hold up at the store
But, since Covid hit I stay at home
I don't go out much more

Something people will remember
But, most days I stay at home
I will not get my last hurrah
So, I'll just sit and write a poem

I thought I was in love
I thought I knew just what love was
But, I guess that I thought wrong
I never knew what love could be
Until you came along

I thought that I loved someone
But, it turned out to be lust
I found out I knew nothing
Until I learned to trust

You opened up my heart to love
You opened it to life
There's things that I'm still learning
From my lover, you, my wife

I thought that I had felt a love
Like no one else before
But, in the end I found that I was wrong
And that love is something more

I know what love is and it hurts
I just can not describe
I now know that I found love
It's a feeling deep inside

You opened up my heart to love
You opened it to life
There's things that I'm still learning
From my lover, you, my wife

Obituary
I figured that the best person
To speak on who i was
is me, because of all my friends
i feel the greatest loss

i lose the chance to grow old and
spend more time with my wife
i feel i disappointed her
by not completing all my life

i think i was a funny guy
i gave more than i took
although you all may disagree
please take another look

i lived my life on my own terms
having married, only twice
i kept my temper mostly
and i think, i'm rather nice

i like to have a laugh or two
and spend time with a drink
i write about my feelings
i write down what i think

but, when all is said and done in life
from all that i can see
the best one to speak on how i was
in my defence....is me!

The speed of love
I met her many years ago
Not knowing where we'd head
It took a while to find out
Then we ended up in bed

Love is a slow moving thing
Not quite the same as lust
The one it has no feeling
The other, it needs trust

Work it right and you will find
That love will come around
It's just like starting a new path
You hold the grass down to the ground

Like a snail moving a boulder
The speed is not that fast
But, with time and trust you'll learn that
Love will surely last

Love is quite a fragile thing
You can find that in a fight
Love can turn to hate real fast
Hate is the speed of light

So, take your time, be careful
Know which is love or lust
Hate is always waiting
To turn one of them to dust
If love surrounds us
Why is it that I just see
Snow to be shoveled?

Christmas Traditions
Someone had to start it
We do it every year
An annual tradition
Something we hold dear

An open house on Christmas Eve
Carols round the fire
Something we do every year
Of which we'll never tire

Let's start a new tradition
Something that's brand new
Something we'll remember
Just for me and you

Let's do something simple
Something with no fuss
Let's start a new tradition
Something just for us

Let's start a new tradition
Something that is fun
And if we are successful
We'll start another one

So, let's make Christmas special
More special than the last
Let's start a new tradition
Like the one's from in the past
I spent the summer at the ball park
I went down there every day
I was there more than most players
But, I never saw them play

The reason I was down there
Is one you need to hear
I was in  love with a concessionaire
I loved the girl who sold the beer

She'd sell her beer and peanuts
While they were playing 'tween the lines
They were taking batting practice
I was just there killing time

The team won eighty games that year
And I was there for half
I never went out on the road
But, I never saw one, there's the laugh

I'd stand off till the lines died down
Then she'd come back from the stands
While they were filling up her tray
We'd talk and just hold hands

It didn't go much further though
She was heading off to school
She was off to Minnesota
Where minus 20 was called cool

I got my tickets for next season
And next summer'll be the same
Unless my beer girl stays away
Then I'll have to watch the game

I spent the summer at the ball park
I went down there every day
I was there more than most players
But, I never saw them play

The reason I was down there
Is one you need to hear
I was in  love with a concessionaire
I loved the girl who sold the beer

Get in the game
**** it up, buttercup
Be a man and grow some
Next time go and say hello
And you won't be so lonesome

She's outa my league
She won't talk to me
Start talking to her
And maybe you'll see

Don't be afraid of your own shadow
Don't be afraid to fall
If you see someone you want to know better
Then peel your self off the wall
Perish the thought that they will not like you
You won't know 'till you try
The question to ask is not if they'll like you
the question to ask is why

Get in the game
Don't sit there debating
They're waiting for you to ask
Remember, young man
It takes two to tango
Get moving, that is your task

People need courage
That is a given
Esteem is a tricky dame
But, if you see someone
you want to know better
Get up and get in the game

Don't be afraid of your own shadow
Don't be afraid to fall
If you see someone you want to know better
Then peel your self off the wall
Perish the thought that they will not like you
You won't know 'till you try
The question to ask is not if they'll like you
the question to ask is why

Breaking the ice
Puts you one step closer
To becoming more than a friend
Just sitting in silence
And not being bolder
Leaves you lonely until the end

**** it up baby
Now make the first move
Did you think that they're shy as well
The two of you staring
In silence forever
If you don't talk...you never will tell

Don't be afraid of your own shadow
Don't be afraid to fall
If you see someone you want to know better
Then peel your self off the wall
Perish the thought that they will not like you
You won't know 'till you try
The question to ask is not if they'll like you
the question to ask is why

Christmas Sacrifice
Stand up tall
Point to the sky
Waiting for
Someone to buy

Seven years
or so to grow
Growing strong
With winter snow

Pine or Spruce
so very real
to give authentic
Christmas feel

People come to
Cut us down
on our farm
outside of town

Branches out
Needles green
Catch their eyes
Be sure you're seen

Unlike those
Deep in the wood
you give your life
For greater good

Sawed or chopped
get hauled away
Or not be picked
And have to stay

Taken from
Your plot of earth
A short trip then,
You get, rebirth

A stand inside
In warmth and light
Protected from
The winter's night

Water seeps
From down below
Nice and fresh
Like winter snow

Boxes opened
Lights are strung
Ornaments so bright
And gently hung

A new face
For the lowly tree
So shiny bright
For all to see

Then at last
A star in place
To signify
An angel's grace

The little tree
Stands tall and bright
It really is
A festive sight

A sacrifice
Of such a gift
To give a home
A Christmas lift

Next year
It will once again
See this cycle
But, until then

The Christmas tree
Festooned and bright
Brings love into
The glorious night

Christmas is for children
Christmas is for children
That, we know is true
But, what defines a child
I don't know, do you?

The spirit and the magic
Is the same at 99
As it it to a small child
And I think that is fine

A child may be younger
But, inside it still lives on
We are still all Children
Though our childhood is gone

Christmas is for children
It's just so special through their eyes
The joy of gifts and sharing
You just cannot disguise

It doesn't really matter
Christmas is a time for all
The older and the youngsters
The short folks and the tall

Christmas is for Children
It's as plain as day to see
I enjoy it like a child
Christmas is the world to me

Merry Christmas

The Wolves
The firelight was fading
The shadows grew in size
In the distance if you listened
You could hear the faintest cries
Of coyotes and of timber wolf
Signalling the end of day
Howling at the growing moon
Keeping night spirits at bay

The last piece of the sagebrush
Was burning to it's core
The flames that danced as quicksilver
Now, they danced no more
The fire, once was blazing
It's flames a dangerous height
Was now a nest of coal chunks
to warm us through the night

Four days out and three to go
We'd be in two days ahead
The scheduled trip with this years herd
And we'd be back in our own bed
A smaller group of beef this time
But, that's the way it goes
At least we'd leave the mountains
Before the early snows

Coffee from the morning meal
Was still sitting in the ***
Two minutes in the embers
And it was steaming hot
The first round of watch was up
And the coffee was re done
The second watch, for wolves and things
Needed coffee and a gun

Two went down the first night out
We heard the wolves, but missed them all
They'd been following us for three days now
And at night you'd hear them call
They signalled that the day was done
And that the herd was staying still
The darkness was their element
It was time for them to ****

The fire was near finished
The flames were all but smoke
but that cup of cowboy coffee
put life into this old grey cowpoke
If the wolves kept at a distance
And just kept howling at the moon
We'd lose no more beef tonight
And be home two days from noon

The fire spit and crackled
The night was damp and cold
The stars were silent beacons
To the wolves so quick and bold
We heard them in the distance
Howling loud as if to say
Will you make it through till morning?
Wait until we come to play.....
Just a short New Year's Wish

Raise a glass and toast the year
Think back now and debate
Another week and it's dusted and done
Goodbye to old two oh one eight

Regardless how it started
And what happened through the year
Celebrate that you're here at the end
And raise a nice cold glass of beer

The Mayans missed about the end of life
And now we've another year to go
A new adventure that will be twelve months long
What it brings, I'm sure that no one knows

So, raise a glass to the end of another long year
And get set to step out once again
I wish you could all have the best year of all
and then multiply all that by ten

Two Oh One Nine could be a year of wonderment
A year that all your dreams come true
It's not predetermined or up in the stars
What you get is all now up to you

So, raise a glass and celebrate that you're still here
And start the New Year off with a smile
A toast to the past and one to what's to come
And let's make it the best year by a mile

Happy Gnu Year to everyone on HP who contributes to all of the talent on this site.

Bobby's Final Ride
I remember that day like yesterday
Always will till I die
We were watching in the back field
Bobby took his final ride
The summer of love was over
The season sure had changed
Camelot and MLK were gone
The future looked quite strange

Thousands lined the tracks that day
Rich, poor, black, and white
Teachers, kids, policemen
Nuns, to see the sight
A train en route to Washington
A short 225 mile ride
We were there to watch in silence
For the man who lay inside

We all knew no one would wave back
But, we needed to say thanks
To the man inside that casket
As we stood on the track banks
There were people on their houses
In ditches, holding hands
To watch for a short moment
And say goodbye to the man

We'd never met him, but we knew
This man was one of us
He'd roll his sleeves up, and dig in
Do the work without a fuss
He was Catholic, we were Baptist
There were Jews and others too
Waving flags, and some saluting
Doing what we had to do

No cheering, only silence
Respect for the rider there inside
We stood as one together
Watching Bobby's final ride
I still go out and stand there
I can find the spot in light or dark
My old dog comes out with me
Watches me, and doesn't bark

Sometimes while I'm out watching
I see the shadows by the track
Of those out standing quiet
For a man not coming back
I've seen a thousand trains pass by
Sometimes, I wave and see
People in the windows
Sending back a wave to me

I remember back in sixty eight
The school was closed just for the day
So we could watch the train go by
And get our closure for the day
A nation was on fire
A powder keg waiting to explode
We stood and watched a train in silence
Carrying a nation's heavy load

New York up to D.C
Then to Arlington to lie
With his brother gone forever
Both were far too young to die
I still remember everything
But I keep it deep inside
As I stood and watched in silence
Bobby take his final ride

waving
I saw her every morning on my walk
i always waved back as i passed
she stood there staring never looking down
and waved her hand across the glass

she never saw me waving from the street
the girl was blind, had always been
still i waved back as i passed her house
a wave returned but never seen

I dreamed that she waved back
The girl would wave at me
But, just who was I fooling
Knowing that she could not see

She'd wipe the condensation
It felt so good on her hand
She couldn't look to see me
I was in another land

The girl up in the window
Watching, seeing no one pass
Sitting there in silence
With her hand upon the glass

But every morning as I'd walk by
I would wave to her up there
Sitting, watching nothing
With a red bow in her hair

I know she couldn't see me
She couldn't see me wave
She didn't know about me
Or the smile that I gave

I walk by every morning
Hoping one day that she'll see
Me giving her a gentle wave
And she will wave at me

The First Snow
It is a thing of magic
The first snow that we see
A sign of winter's coming
A sign of what will be

It never comes during the day
The first snow comes at night
It's blanket forms while we all sleep
In a coat of winter white

It may arrive and disappear
All in the same day
But, there's magic in that first, fresh snow
Although it may not stay

The first snow has us dreaming
That Christmas is now near
A feeling of remembrance
Of those we held so dear

The first snow has us feeling
What words will never say
With frosted patterns painted everywhere
Each different in their way

You'll wait for it's arrival
When the world is painted white
Watch the window into winter
Open wide beneath moon light

just a work in progress.
i'm not sure just what words to use
or how this is gonna sound
but, i hope that what you get from this
is...i need you around
i'm ok as a single
but, we're  better as a pair
I'm not sure what words to use
To tell you that I care

I've walked on through the fire
I came out the other side
But, without your love to lead me
I don't think that I'd survive
I don't know why you love me
I'm only glad to know you do
I'm a much, much better person
Because I'm in love with you
It was early Christmas Eve Day
There was light snow on the ground
And lightly, if you listened
You could hear the slightest sound

It wasn't from a choir
Nor, a speaker on the street
But, a voice, tired and raspy
That would not admit defeat

Normally, at Christmas
The street would be alive
With last minute visits
Before Santa would arrive

Gianni held a party
For the vendors out this way
But, this year, there'd be nothing
There was no party today

Behind his place, The Bluesman
Had moved inside from the cold
He'd moved to the old Church basement
Where his stories were still told

He'd head outside and sing some
His "med-cine" in his jug
Behind the Church he'd set up,
On a wood chair, with a rug

The Bluesman sang to no one
His voice crisp, but not as strong
The elements were tough now
But, they would not take his song

The pastor, always present
Standing, watching by the door
He loved hearing the Bluesman
But, he loved the people more

Some Sundays, not all though
The Bluesman would begin
The service for the pastor
Then the choir joined in

He'd sneak off to the basement
Or outside, with his guitar
The Bluesman, felt his music
Was his lightning in the jar

This morning, though not Sunday
He was singing to the few
Lost souls, and some locals
Who had nothing else to do

The church doors were wide open
Every candle had been lit
It wasn't cold inside there,
But, maybe, just a little bit

He sang some Christmas carols
Some old blues, and Lennon too
He stopped and took a swallow
That was the choirs cue

They'd come in from the alley
The pastor had them in behind
The Bluesman, kept on singing
He was lost inside his mind

The church was filling up though
The voices carried on the wind
To those who always came here
And those who never sinned

There were masks of every colour
In every second row
The pastor kept folks distanced
For this little make shift show

The Bluesman sang a few more
Then he spoke unto the crowd
"Keep those you love inside your heart"
Though it wasn't very loud

He walked on past the pastor
By the choir, to the stair
And like Clement Moore's old Santa
In a blink, he wasn't there

Things this year were different
Not like parties in the past
Held up at old Gianni's
No one knew how long they'd last

There was no star to sing to
It was early in the day
But, we'd got our Christmas present
We'd got to hear the Bluesman play

Maybe next year, would be better
Back to normal, as before
But, who knows, just what will happen
What the muses have in store

So, take the Christmas message
"Keep those you love inside your heart"
God bless you all this Christmas
Another year is set to start
can i still call it your birthday
if it's the day you chose to die
I can't guess what you were thinking
I can't begin to even try

I refuse to ask the question
You know, tell me why
can i still call it your birthday
If it's the day you chose to die

It only took a second
to tear my world apart
just the time to pull a trigger
put a hole into my heart

a voice i can't remember
a face from long ago
the person lying dead there
is not the one i know

The choice of what to pick up
The gun or man, the phone
Is one you never thought of
Now, you've left us all alone

Each year upon your birthday
We will toast your name and cry
Can I still call it your birthday
If it's the day you chose to die

Tomorrow will be different
Today will be much different
Than it was the day before
Things are changing quickly
There is nothing in the store

Help things to get better
Remember, wash your hands
Read a book or listen
To all your favorite bands

Start a list of things to do
Until we meet again
Tomorrow will be different
Let's wait now until then

Stay safe and pay attention
Keep your distance and behave
This thing is far from over
There will be a second wave

Tomorrow will be different
Than things all were today
So, check in with your loved ones
Make a call and just say hey!
Did I say what they said I said
Some I said, not all
If I said the things I'd said
I'd have no time to play ball

I said some things I think I said
Some things came right from me
Some things I said, I wished I said
But those things, let them be

I said some things I said I saw
Some say I didn't say
Some things I saw, I didn't see
I just looked the other way

Some things I said I didn't say
I know, because it's true
I said some things I said I saw
The choice is up to you

There's things I said, that people like
Those things, I know I spoke
The other things I didn't say
Were just written as a joke

If I said the things I said
And you like them, say them too
But the things they said, I didn't say
Some are old, but most are new

I know I didn't say as much
As people said I said
There's more from me, I didn't say
At least that's what I've read

So, sue me if I say I say
Some things I said, but heard
I know it wasn't me that said
I don't know all those words

So, if I said the things I said
Instead of going out to play
I ask you now, to tell me please
Exactly, What'd I say

these hands
These hands have done it all
They're tough as wire rope
They've fought to defend freedom
They've carried flags of hope

They've wiped away the salty tears
Of a mother, full of pride
They've folded up our nations flag
For a son, with honor, died

They've held a newborn really close
They've birthed a newborn calf
They've taken down a hundred men
And a hundred more, by half

These hands don't represent me
But, these hands have done it all
They've done eight seconds on a bull
And they've broken through a wall

These hands are soft as leather
And as hard as Georgia Clay
What they did so long before
They can not do today

These hand are all arthritic
Crippled up, and full of pain
But,you know these hands would love just once
To grab that rope again

These hands are full of memories
Built for strength, and not for speed
These hands are built to hold you
Even now, that's all I need

These hands, they tell my story
My life, is in these hands
I don't look at them as crippled
I just look and think....These Hands....

The first snow
The sun has disappeared now
There is **** frost on the ground
The first snow of the season
Arrives without a sound

Gentle, white, so delicate
A coat of frozen felt
It will not stay too long though
When the sun's back it will melt

The first snow of the season
Just a teaser, just a taste
Of what will come this winter
And of which we'll be encased

So fragile, full of beauty
Change of seasons don't you know
There is magic in the feeling
Of seeing the first snow
snow winter cold season weather

Christmas is
Can someone out there tell me
Just what Christmas is
Is it gift exchanging
Or a silent, snowy kiss

Is Christmas only Jesus
Or is it something else indeed
Is it love for one another
Or love for retail greed

Is Christmas something solid
The sum is bigger than the parts
Is Christmas just a feeling
We keep tucked deep inside our hearts

Christmas is just what we make it
Be it good, or be it bad
It's a gathering of loved ones
Where one can still feel sad

You can't put your finger on it
But, in time I think you'll find
That Christmas is a feeling
In your heart that rules your mind

You can celebrate the season
With a group, or on your own
It's the actions toward others
It is LOVE, the great unknown

To everyone it's different
In the end, the day is his
Celebration of the savior
That's what Christmas is...
Gates and boards and reels of wire
Garbage by the gates
Driveway overgrown with grass
The factory is a state

Security checks once an hour
To make sure all's still locked
Another business shut it's door
the economy was rocked

Another workplace bites the dust
Another one shuts down
To find the business district here
You've got to leave the town

They're closing up 'bout one a month
Jobs are leaving by the score
When you leave, turn out the lights
And please folks, lock the door

Work is leaving faster than
It has ever in the past
There's more folks on assistance
How long will this all last?

Fifty years a hundred ten
Factories closing shop
There's more buildings that are vacant
Our growth came to a stop

It doesn't matter where you go
It's that **** covid one nine
If you are not essential
Out goes the "CLOSING" sign

It all comes down to profit
You're a number not a name
It doesn't matter where you go
Plant closure is the game

Another workplace bites the dust
Another one shuts down
To find the business district here
You've got to leave the town

They're closing up 'bout one a month
Jobs are leaving by the score
When you leave, turn out the lights
And please folks, lock the door

western justice
Western Justice
It was known just as "The Tree"
It was on the fence line of Jade Ranch
And on the wizened, hardened oak
Was a limb, known as "The Branch"

On the branch hung seven ropes
Of seven different lengths
Depending on the sentence
They chose one of seven strengths

Now a posse and a lynch mob
Are two completely different groups
You may always end up hanging
But through two different loops

Get caught with someone else's horse
By someone from on the ranch
Then you'll face Western Justice
And end up hanging from "The Branch"

Western justice it was called
And lynch mobs had a thirst
To see you hanging from "The Tree"
If you didn't meet the Marshall first

Get caught with an extra ace
You'll be called out as a cheat
You will never make "The Tree"
You'll get gunned down in your seat

But, have a horse, that's not your brand
And a lynch mob's soon around
Western Justice will prevail
With you ten feet from the ground

You'll sit upon the horse you stole
No one hears your weak defence
One slap and the verdicts in
You'll hang on the ranch side of the fence

Shoot a man in town and you
Will end up in the local jail
But, shoot him where the Law is not
And Western Justice will prevail

Seven ropes of different lengths
Take a man on to his death
Once the horse is slapped to go
No one will hear your last breath

There's a lynch mob and a posse
You don't know just how close they are
One does what they think is right
One feels the same, but has a star

"The Tree" is there in waiting
For the next rope to be strung
If you aren't caught by the Marshall
From "The Branch" you will be hung

I Love You
I can't make a statue out of clay
I can't paint a painting like Monet
But the three words I do know how to say
I Love You...I Love You

I will swim the roughest, deepest sea
I will climb the highest, tallest tree
I'll do it just so you can plainly see
I Love You...I Love You

These three words are never hard to say to one you Love
If you truly feel it in your heart
If you say it and you mean it to the one you dearly love
You'll be one and will never ever part

I can write, but I can't write a book
I'm not a chef and I can barely cook
You know what I'm feeling by a single look
I Love You...I Love You

I will climb a mountain just for you
I'll hold my breath until my face turns blue
You know I will, and I know you will too
I Love You...I Love You

The nature of the beast
It wasn't s'posed to happen
Not this way at least
But, as folks always tell ya
It's just the nature of the beast

Go to High school, finish college
Then get married, all to plan
Girl got pregnant, plan averted
Time to step up, be a man

Trouble comes when least expected
It sees you down, it has a feast
Trouble comes when least expected
It is the nature of the beast

A second child, a crap apartment
Robbing Peter to pay Paul
Nothing goes the way you planned it
Nothing's working out at all

Rent is due, the bills are mounting
You need to find a better way
Can you fix all that is broken
Or do you just run away

A pretty girl shows some attention
You do not mind it in the least
You then return her sweet affection
It is the nature of the beast

The kids grow up and time passes
Your secret buried deep within
But life at home is still disrupted
And then you do it all again

You harbor guilt for all your failures
It's not your fault, what's gone before
You blame your spouse, it's just too easy
But you can not leave,  walk out the door

The stress it builds just like a fire
Not just yours, hers too increased
She leaves to move on with another
It is the nature of the beast

If the music doesn't grab you
You will not hear the words
If the music doesn't grab you
The story's never heard

If you want to tell a story
And you tell it in a song
The music has to grab them
Or you're doing it all wrong

A melancholy melody
Won't get the point across
If the music doesn't grab them
The story will be lost

If the music doesn't grab you
You will not hear the words
If the music doesn't grab you
The story's never heard

The music must be catchy
It needs to have a hook
The story will just lie there
Lost deep inside a book

The music is just background
The story is the words
But, man, if you don't grab them
You're story won't be heard

If the music doesn't grab you
You will not hear the words
If the music doesn't grab you
The story's never heard

Love is Magic
Time stands still
When we're together
There's us
And nothing else

Elements
A fated story
There's us
And nothing else

We're in love
And love is magic
All consuming
joy and pain

Sometimes love
Can be quite tragic
We end
To start again

Up in heaven raising hell
I got the news this morning
Not the way to start the day
Another friend had fallen
I now grieve for Johnny Ray

I can not hide my feelings
I'm not sure how to feel
I wait for him to phone me
This just does not feel real

Let's celebrate his life though
Not with prayer, let's sing and yell
We know that he will hear us
Up in heaven raising hell

When you lose a loved one
There's things they say to do
But, ***** that, let's get rowdy
Let's do something loud and new

Remember them through music
Do it loud so they can hear
Sing, shout, be vocal
They're gone but they're still near

Tonight we will remember
On the stage we'll sing and yell
So Johnny Ray can hear us
Up in heaven raising hell
Yep, Johnny will sure hear us
Up in heaven raising hell

reminiscing
I think that I'll just sit a spell
And reminisce a while
About the people and the things
Now gone, that made me smile

A short trip back to yesteryear
To all the  things I miss
I think that I'll just sit a spell
And I will reminisce

I know I'm getting older, but,
You know time moves so fast
It's much more of a comfort
Looking backward to the past

I remember when the tv set
Went off after the news
When  gym class was the only time
You went out with running shoes

When country still had western
And rock, it still had roll
When AM ruled the airwaves
And R & B had soul

I think that I will sit a while
And I will reminisce
About the things now long gone
And all the things I miss

Another year is finished now
So I think that once again
I'll think about the things
The things I miss from way back then

I miss people more than ever
I think of them and smile
I hope their smiling too
While I think back for a while

I'm sitting in the darkness
Thinking of what I'm missing
Another year older
I'm sitting here reminiscing
