Glottonous
I come upon a dead butterfly in the parking lot.
The blackest asphalt sets off the shimmering seafoam scales of his one remaining wing:
A wedge of Luna and lime
against a tarmac night sky.
I wonder where the other wing is,
And when he lost it.
It might have cracked off and blown away
long after he was dead,
Like a sheet of snowflakes.
But he probably lost it while he was still living,
Hit by a car or an ignorant wayward step,
Left to flutter and stumble to his demise
Like a wounded soldier or a choking fish;
A cerulean one-winged sailboat
Overturned on the vast black pavement.
An observant poem.

Hood isn't getting money and chicks
Its not what they show on the flicks
Its pain, death, and the struggle to survive
Its waking up
And praying to god that you stay alive
That walk down the street
Could be your very last
It could easily be taken
By someone wanting your cash
Y'all may not even read this
Y'all may not even care
But if you do
I'm just trying to make you aware
So before you sling dope
Thinking its cool
Remember there are real gangsters
That won't think twice about ending you

I stop in my tracks,
          Listening

  A hollow
clinking in the darkness.
In an alleyway, somewhat familiar,
Vacant and forgotten in the twilight hours
Except for the lingering cigarette smoke
And the scent of frigid, dehumanizing hate

  And a
clink
Low and somehow beneath the dense, dank dark

A sound disillusioning and honed to a fine point, like that of a blade meant to harvest death

  A
clink
And another
clink

There is a man sitting near the end of the alley
At the back of the throat of Hell itself
                           He has his head down
But through the thick black smudge of night
I can still see the base of a brown glass bottle tap the bottom of an upper row of teeth

He stops, and looks up at me with eyes that resemble mine a little too much for my comfort

He brings the bottle down, and lowers his head, gazing at it as if for the first time
Suddenly he snaps his eyes up to mine, instantly staring into the deep void of apathy that looks back.
He smiles a knowing smile, and slams the bottle against his teeth.

It does much more than *
clink.

There's a glint in your eye
A tease, as it were
A spark in the air
And it's starting to flare

Your sweet, lilting laugh
As you balance yourself
And I'd say it's love
If push came to shove

The warmth in your gaze
As you look back at me
And the curve of your lips
That I'd so like to kiss

These are all things
That I hold in my heart
That warm me at night
When I turn out the light

But it's all in my head
Just a bittersweet dream
That's why I sleep so much
It's the only way to feel your touch

I play
in another dimension.

Color trailing garden vines
climbing around my mind.

There all things are possible,
every completely improbable
conception of my wild imagination.

Who can compare with your majesty, oh Lord?
Who can match your might and power?
For with your breath you gave life to the earth,
and as you spoke, the world came into being.

Truly, God, you are powerful beyond measure.
Your strength is beyond the comprehension of man.
Only you can say what is right and wrong;
from your mouth come the decrees of justice.

Hear my plea, oh God.
I have fallen in the darkness,
and I can not raise myself up.
The heights of Your glory are beyond my reach.

I am beset on all sides by trouble.
Doubt and fear are my constant companions.
My eyes are blinded,
and I cannot see your path.

You, Lord, who sees all,
know of my faith.
I have never renounced your name,
but always have I kept it in reverence.

Look upon me in my hour of need,
and see that I have done no wrong.
Through no fault of my own
I have lost my way.

Surely, oh God, you will deliver me.
For do you not guide the righteous along your paths
even as you condemn the wicked to damnation?
Surely, oh God, you will pull me from the depths.

Reach out your hand
and rescue me, Lord.
Restore unto me surety and boldness once again,
that I might walk in your light forever.

Nothing is impossible for you, God.
You are all powerful, all knowing,
with love that never ends.
I place my trust in you.

Your mercy and grace are boundless.
Though I often fail to keep your laws,
still you do not abandon me.
Your forgiveness is unfathomable.
This was something I did for a class at my university. It's modeled after a lament from the book of Psalms, and follows the general structure as well as making use of different forms of parallelism that are found in ancient Hebrew poetry.

Quiet clouds drifting across the night sky
The world is quiet, as everyone sleeps
The moon above like a half eaten pie
Majestic and bright, her vigil she keeps

I like simple things.
Walking
Breathing
Talking
I don't like simple things that turn into compex things.
Sprinting
Hyperventilating
Arguing
I have a hard time focusing on simplicity when it all changes into complexity without warning.
