RAJ NANDY Aug 2018
Dear Poet Friends, I conclude this series on The Enigma of Time by mentioning few important features about the concept of Time according to Modern Philosophy and Science. I have used a
simple format, and also tried my best to simplify the concepts for your kind appreciation. Unfortunately, there is no provision on this Poetry Site to show Diagrams to elucidate! If you like this one, kindly repost the same for wider circulation! Thank you, Raj Nandy, New Delhi.

CONCLUDING THE ENIGMA OF TIME IN VERSE:
PART THREE – BY RAJ NANDY

              TIME ACCORDING TO MODERN PHILOSOPHY

UNREALITY Of TIME : Mc Taggart’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ Series:
Now skipping through the pages I come to Modern Philosophy, with Mc Taggart the British philosopher of the 20th Century.
He had acquired a substantial following with his 1908 paper on the ‘Unreality of Time’ initially.
With his quibbling argument he states, that moments in his ‘A’ Series of Time are either of past tense, present tense, or of future tense.
It is all about human perception, since we experience the past through our memories;
Become aware of the present through our senses, while future is pretty unknowable.
Here time appears to be flowing through us, as nothing remains stable around us!

In his ‘B’ Series of Time Mc Taggart expresses differences in moments of time as either Before or After,
Without using the tenses used in his ‘A’ Series of Time.
All parts in time can be expressed equally as points along a time line, in the absence of past, present, and future tense;
While here we appear to be flying through time in a metaphorical sense!
Thus in the ‘A series’ time appears to be flowing through us, but in ‘B series’ we seem to be flying through time on a timeline created by us!
Therefore, Mc Taggart finds both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Series describing Time to be inadequate and also contradictory;
And he finally concludes that Time is unreal and does not exist in reality!

How Mc Taggart’s Theory Was  Updated :
Modern Philosophers have re-casted Mc Taggart’s theory in term of findings of Modern Physics.
His A-Theory is updated into ‘PRESENTISM’, which holds that only thing that is real is the ‘present moment’.
In ‘Presentism’ time has no past or future, and time has no duration either!
All things come into existence and drop out of existence, and past events no longer exist;
And since the future is undefined or merely potential, it too does not exist!

His B-theory is re-formulated into ‘ETERNALISM’ or the ‘Block Universe’, influenced by the later Theory of Relativity.
‘Eternalism’ holds that past events do exist even if we cannot immediately experience them, and future events also exists in a very real way.
The ‘flow of time’ we experience is just an illusion of consciousness.
Since in reality, time is always everywhere in an eternal sense!

Theory of Growing Block Universe:
It was proposed by the Englishman CD Broad in 1923, as an alternative to ‘Presentism’ where only the present exist;
And also as an alternative to ‘Eternalism’ where past, present, and future together also exist.
In ‘Growing Block Universe’ only the past and the present exist, but not the future.
Since the growing of the block happens in the present, with a very thin slice of space-time continuously coming into existence;
Where consciousness as well as the flow of time are not active within the past,
But they can occur only at the boundary of this ‘Growing Block Universe’!
Few scholars this concept did criticise, saying that in this theory the word ‘now’ can no longer be used to define Time!

But according to Einstein, this perception of ‘now’ that appears to move along a timeline, creating the illusion of ‘flow of time’, arises purely as a result of human consciousness;
And the way our brains are wired due to our evolutionary process, enabling us to deal with the world around us in a practical sense.
“People like us, who believe in Physics, know that the duration between the past, present, and the future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion,’’ said Einstein.

A poem on ‘The Paradox of Time’:
Now to lighten up my Reader’s mind, I present only the first three stanzas from ‘’The Paradox of Time’’, composed by the British poet Austin Dobson:
“Time goes, you say? Ah no!
   Alas, Time stays, we go;
Or else, were this not so,
What need to chain the hours,
  For youth were always ours?

  Ours is the eye’s deceit
  Of men whose flying feet
     Lead through some landscape low;
We pass, and think we see
  The earth’s fixed surface flee,
     Alas, time stays, we go!

Once in the days of old
  Your locks were curling gold,
And mine had shamed the crow.
  Now, in the self-same stage,
  We’ve reached the silver age,
Time goes, you say? - ah no!
       Alas, time stays, we go!”

HOW LIGHT IS CONNECTED WITH THE CONCEPT OF TIME:
Brief Background:
I commence with quotes from the ‘Book of Genesis’ - Chapter One, along with my thoughts about Light and Time,
Before concluding this series with Albert Einstein’s concept of Space-Time.

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. ……And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth. And it was so.”
                                                      - BOOK Of GENESIS Chapter One.

Since ancient days, Light had acquired a religious and a spiritual significance.
Since Light became associated with goodness, intelligence and ultimate realty;
Light accompanies transcendence into Nirvana of Buddhist religious philosophy.
In due course the Sun began to be worshipped as an important live-giving deity.
As seen in the symbolic form of Egyptian Sun God Ra, and the Greek gods Helios and Hyperion as the Sun god and god of Light respectively.
In Hindu mythology Surya is the Sun god, and Ushas the goddess of Light.
Huitzilopochti, both the Sun god and god of War of the Ancient Aztecs was kept pleased with human sacrifice!

SOME PROPERTIES OF LIGHT:
Plato, during the 5th Century BC said that God was unable to make the World eternal, so gave it Time,  - “as the moving image of eternity.”
While some seven hundred years later St. Augustine in his ‘Confessions’ said,
That when God created the universe out of darkness with light, “the world was also created with Time, and not in time.”
Thus along with light, time also began to flow, while our scientists discovered a connection between the speed of light and time, few centuries ago!
To understand this connection between light and time, we must first understand something about the properties of light.
Light is the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum* which can be perceived by our human eye.         (See Notes Below)
As seen in the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet colors of the Rainbow in the sky,
When water droplets acting like countless prisms break up white sunlight!
Now this electromagnetic spectrum also contains the ultra violet and infra red spectrum which our eyes cannot see.
But this entire electromagnetic spectrum contains Photons, which are discreet packets of zero mass less energy.
In a vacuum light photons travel at 186,000 miles for second, which Einstein declared as the cosmic speed limit, and as an universal constant.
When a photon strikes the eye, it is turned into electrical energy that is transmitted to the brain to form an image which we call sight.

NOTES : Gama-rays, X-rays, Ultraviolet lights, have shorter wave lengths & more energy than Visible light. But Infrared, Microwave, Radio waves, with larger wave lengths are less energetic than the Visible spectrum of light. Sir Isaac Newton using a prism had discovered the spectrum of visible light, & used the word ‘spectrum’ for the first time in his book ‘Optick’ in 1671.

EINSTEIN'S SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY 1905 :
In his Special Theory of Relativity of 1905, he stated that nothing can move faster than speed of light which is 186,000 miles per second.
This speed of light always remains the same, irrespective of its source and frame of reference.
Now the mass of an object would double if it travels at 90% of light’s speed.
But if the speed of light is reached, mass of an object would become infinite!
Since photons, the quantum particles that make up light have a zero mass, they move at the speed of light.
Even inside the World’s Largest Particle Collider (LDC), located near the French-Swiss Border,
Experiments are carried out only around 99.99% of Light’s speed, in accordance with the Laws of Physics.
Einstein had also shown mathematically that on reaching Light’s speed, Time will come to a standstill!
And should this Light’s speed be exceeded, then Time would start to travel backwards, which becomes a mind boggling concept!
Here we enter into the realm of science fiction, which has been described by HG Wells  in his popular novel ‘The Time Machine’.
But to become a time traveler shall always remain our cherished desire and dream!

NOTES: Only mass less particles like the photon can travel at light speed, photons experience no time, they do not age. Objects with mass cannot reach the speed of light since in that case its mass will become infinite. Also, one cannot see the fourth dimension because of Lorenz Contraction, which is also related to stopping of time, for at the speed of light an object will shrink to zero length! Also, particles interact with the Higgs' Field present all around to pick up mass, excepting photons which do not interact with this Higgs' Field.

Now Einstein’s theory of 1905 is called ‘Special’, because it explains how space and time are linked for objects that are moving in a straight line at a greater speed but which is constant.
Time moves relative to the observer, and objects in motion experience ‘Time Dilation’.
Meaning, time moves slowly when it is in motion, as compared to one who is standing still, -  a relative comparison.
This can be further explained by the ‘Twin Paradox’, where a 15 year old travelling in a spaceship at 99.5% speed of light for a period of 5 years,
Returns back to Earth to find himself to be only 20 years old.
But to his surprise he finds, his twin brother on Earth who was left behind, has reached the ripe age of 65 !

Limitations of Special Theory of Relativity:
It was confined to non-accelerating bodies only, and after ten years of deliberation,
Einstein added gravitational force field, space-time curvature, and acceleration, -
To formulate his General Theory of Relativity with satisfaction.

   SPACE-TIME & GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY 1916 :
Isaac Newton during the 17th Century spoke about 'absolute time' and 'absolute space', accordance to the understanding of science of his Classical Age.
Space was the arena where the drama of the universe was played out, and this arena was passive, eternal, and unchanging no doubt.
Time too was absolute with an independent existence, and continued to beat independently like the heart beat of Space!
Newton also gave us the Laws of Motion, and Gravity, with more massive objects exerting more Gravity than a less massive one in reality.
Now one aspect of Special Relativity is that space and time are merged into a four-dimensional space-time entity,
They do not exist as separately as envisaged by Newton and Descartes during the 17th Century.
Some 250 years later Albert Einstein, defined Gravity as a curvature of Space-time.
Einstein also tells us that gravity can bend light, which travels along the curvature of this space-time.
Gravity is flexible, it could stretch like a fabric warping of space-time caused by objects present within it, in fact Gravity is the shape of space-time itself!
The Moon rolls around the curvature created in space-time fabric by the heavier object the Earth,
Just like the massive Sun which creates the depression and curvature around it for the planets of our solar system to orbit round the Sun. *

Einstein’s space-time has been likened to a stretched out vast rubber sheet,
Where heavier the planet, more depression it creates on the fabric of space-time along with its own gravitational field.
Einstein’s Space is not passive like that of Newton, but has a dynamic presence.
Interwoven with Time, Space tells Matter how to move, while Matter tells Space-Time how to curve - in this dynamic presence!
The constant speed of light at 186,000 miles per second, is just a measure of space of something which travels over time;
But both space and time had to adjust themselves to accommodate the constant speed of light!
Thus space, time, and the speed of light are all unified in the General Theory of Relativity,
We owe all this to Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of our Century.
NOTES: **Planets orbiting the Sun do not fall back into the void of space due to the attraction of gravity, and also due to their individual speed of acceleration maintained in orbit as per Kepler's Second Law of Planetary Motion. Mercury has the fastest orbital speed of 48 km per second, Venus at 35 km per sec , and Earth at 30 km per sec. as their orbital speeds. Planets further from the Sun require lesser orbital speed.

UNFINISHED WORK OF EINSTEIN:
During his later years Einstein was secretly working to find a ‘Theory of Everything’,
Which would ultimately replace the erratic tiny micro world of Quantum Mechanics.
His Theory of General Relativity had dealt with the functions of gravity at the greater macro level of the universe only.
So he hoped to extend this theory to find an all embracing Unified Field Theory.
For at the subatomic quantum level, as the Englishman Thomson discovered in 1897,
The electrons inside an atom at times behaved in an alien fashion and were very unstable!
This world of the subatomic particles is a wondrous world where time becomes chaotic;
Where the position of the electrons cannot be predicted with certainty!
Einstein called this unpredictable and unstable behaviour of electrons as "spooky action at a distance"!
In the ‘double-split experiment’ it was seen, that the light photons behaved both like waves and as particles, -
Even though the speed of light remained constant.

EINSTEIN'S NOBLE PRIZE For PHYSICS AWARDED IN 1921:
Now despite Einstein's dissatisfaction with Quantum Mechanics it is rather ironical,
That the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Einstein for his work on the ‘Photoelectric Effect’ at the Quantum level;
Which for the first time had suggested that Light travelled in Waves and also as Particles ( i.e. as photon)!
This observation led to the development of electron microscope, solar panels, night vision devices, at a later date.
Since his Special and General Theory of Relativity considered as ‘The Pillars of Modern Physics’, was still being examined by the Scientific Community;
And they could be proved and accepted only subsequently.

'STRING THEORY' PROPOSED AS THEORY FOR EVERYTHING:
During the 1970s the proponents of ‘String Theory’ had claimed, They found a Theory of Everything, following Einstein’s quest.
They claimed that micro vibrating open and closed looped strings gave rise to some 36 particles at the subatomic level;
But also required 10 dimensions for this 'String Theory' to operate!
In our Standard Model of Physics we have only 18 particles as on date, therefore due to lack of scientific evidence,
There was no Noble Prize for those ‘String Theory’ proponents!
Efforts are on to find a Unified Theory of Everything, and to understand the mysteries of God’s infinite universe, -
We finite humans have just made a beginning!

Now, to reduce the length of my composition I conclude with a short verse by the famous novelist and poet DH Lawrence, -
Who had shocked Victorian England with his explosive ****** novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”,
Which later inspired Hollywood, and a film got made.

               RELATIVITY
“I like relativity and quantum theories
because I don’t understand them,
and they make me feel as if space shifted about like
a swan that can’t settle,
refusing to sit still and be measured;
and as if the atom were an impulsive thing
always changing its mind.”  – DH Lawrence.

Bersama suara tawa
Terdengung hasrat hati sedikit kata
Dia yang berbaik hati
Dan saya yang bersakit sakit

Merangkak dibawah kebaikannya
Menggumam kala dia tertawa

Setelah memesan kopi, pilot ku menggores kertas
Yang sama putihnya dengan kulitmu
Tak lupa kubakar ujung rokokku
Yang namanya sehangat pelukanmu
Lalu kuhembuskan kepulan asap tembakau

Dirimu ku lukis dalam surat ini;

"Di hingar bingar kota, dimanakah kau berada?
Jika lelahmu beradu, dimakah kau berteduh?
Aku disini kasih, Surabaya tempatmu lari
Menolehlah jika kau ada di sudut persimpangan
Mungkin, aku disitu mencari dan mencari
Sisa-sisa cintamu jika itu memang terjatuh
Menadah air matamu, jika itu memang tercecer.
Temui aku, jika berkenan menjumpa nostalgia"

Kuhembuskan uap-uap tar yang menguning
Menerawang di bohlam remang-remang.
Ketika kabut itu pergi, begitu pula aku
Saat api ini padam, redup juga jiwaku

Pukul tiga aku beranjak,
Bayar dan pergi
Surat itu kutinggalkan di atas meja.

I stepped outside my door this morning
a flock of snowy egrets soaring above
greeted my eyes, also in the distance
two stygian vultures added to the yin/yang
of the moment

Facing eastward, Surya, the Sun God
stretched out His long burnished arms
yawning away starry remnants of night

My neck has been giving me trouble lately
I asked Surya to give me a solar massage
standing barefoot in the jeweled dew and
damp grass

Surya's life giving warm rays penetrated
the gloomy, dreary alleyways
of my mind and body

Smiling up at our beautiful,
radiant Sun God
I blew fairy kisses toward the sky

bright faced cape may daisies
and disneyland roses
scattered petals
at His most auspicious, splendid
lustrous lotus Feet
Surya Lights the blazing candle in the sky
and our day begins
on a pillow of clouds my spirit
bows at His vast blue altar

In fact, gods, goddesses, earthlings
and all the inhabitants of the Cosmos
kneel and prostrate at His glorious, life giving Feet

Today Lord Surya ascends to His northernmost
temple in the heavens
Courtly tablas boom, traditional Indian trumpets blare

Sweet sticky aroma and flavors of
sesame and jaggery confection
overflow in banquet halls on earth and in Kailasa

Colorful kites, bits of starry confetti
drift downward from the celestial celebration

David and I, our hands folded in prayer
stand on the front lawn offering our salutations
to the Golden Lord

By Serendipitous good fortune, my brother Chris just happens
to pass by at this moment and stops to join
us in our Sun worship

Happy Makar Sankranti
May Surya Deva's auspicious saffron rays
bless you with Peace, Love and Prosperity

when the dawn flirty flicker on the horizon of the hill ..
feels cool breeze wash the bitter wounds ...

when the blazing sun dancing on the head burn jealous ..
so graceful way you speak ..

when the sun pull over and hide the east stretch of ocean ..
so light up the dim dark brushed off behavior ..

when the evening wading longing raft ..
so beautiful the way you steal sank deep trough ..*

cara karammu

saat sang fajar mengerlip genit diufuk bukit..
terasa sejuk  hembusan angin membasuh luka yang pahit...

saat sang mentari menari terik diatas kepala membakar cemburu..
begitu anggun bertutur caramu..

begitu terang perilakumu menepis gelapnya temaram asa..

these are the times that try men's souls..
i woke up thinking a very pleasant thought. there 's lots left in the world to see..

"Cahaya redup itu umpama semesta alam."
birunya naungan langit fajar
ketika tetes embun hadir di atas permukaan daun
pada hari itu kau berujar

"Pernahkah kamu tahu bahwa gelapnya mengisahkan beribu kisah?"
yang ada suaraku bungkam oleh pertanyaanmu
gaungnya terngiang mengisi sudut hampa telingaku

kuperhatikan rambut ikal panjangmu menjilati tengkukmu
sambil disiuli angin yang bernyanyi pelan, begitu tenang

"Atau yang tidak sengaja kamu sembunyikan?"
"Ralat, yang sengaja kamu sembunyikan."
matamu mengerling menerawang memandang langit Juni

"Cahaya redup umpama semesta alam, gelapnya mengibarkan beribu ilham."
jemarimu cepat berdansa dengan senar begitu cermat
ingat pertama kali dua pasang mata sendu ini berkenalan
dalam gelap dalam redup
lahir melodrama di tengah rintik tangisan langit bulan kedua

"Gelapnya mengibarkan seribu ilham. Gelapnya mendatangkan pelangi di tengah tulisan dalam buku kelabuku."
diremasnya jemariku, lalu tenggelam dalam beribu rasa
bunga-bunga merekah membentangkan senyum sang surya

Ya
Langit ini terlalu indah untuk dilihat saja
Tanah ini terlalu luas sebagai sebuah pijakan

Bisakah aku melihat sisi langit lainnya?
Bisakah aku mengenal sudut pijakan lainnya?

Apakah aku terhukum?

Aku bukan peminta
Apalagi pengemis
Tapi kali ini, bisakah kau jelaskan padaku?
Apa? Mengapa?
Hiiiiii. Have a nice day and thank you!!

Semerbak hujan
Merangsang ingatan
Menggantikan kelam

Menunggu Sang Surya datang
Namun lelah menunggu ketidakpastian
Kini yang tersisa luapan tangisan
Hingga merasa distorsi yang tidak terbendung

Membius raga dengan memori kelam
Rasa ingin sendiri
Terbang menuju dunia baru
Meninggalkan realita

Tak perlu pergi ke tengah hutan belantara tak bertuan
Atau tempat semak belukar tumbuh dengan liarnya
Alam bawah laut dimana air udaranya

Hari demi hari
Kulewati dengan gelap menyertai
Hari demi hari
Hujan gelap menemani

Aku menunggu kedatangan
Sang surya
Agar ia menghantarkanmu
Ke duniaku

Aku tak mampu mencintaimu serupa sosok yang kau kasihi lalu
Tak mampu pula mencintaimu ibarat kau menyayangi belah jiwamu
Cintaku sebesar surya
Lamun cintanya seolah semesta

Sebab aku mencintaimu tanpa khawatir
akan cintamu berlabuh pada siapa
—kalau tanyamu tentang bagaimana cara mencintai sedalam aku padamu.

The next morning after their morning loving making session
After whispering sweet nothings to eachother
Boris said that he going to announce that
He at a young age had found enlightenment
She thought her scronny tattooed lover was going to do that
Claudia said that she loved him
But since they came here
He went insane
Yet was still loving
She realized that she had missed her period three months in a row
Could she still teach
While carrying their child.
Could she take care of them
Here in this waste land
She thought know and she
Called her tattooed monk that
She was carrying his kid
Claudia then she she was going to open up a dojo in
Upper manhattan
To make a better life
For her and the kid
She kissed him farewell
Feeling those piecing for the last time
And turned her back
On the punk Lama.
When she arrived Claudia left
Her beloved
In Tibet
And wished him well
She also found out that she was having multiples.
When she got to a doctor
Claudia stayed with her friends
Until she gave birth
Made a name for herself again
Every night she cried herself to
Sleep
And dreamed of Boris
And in the day she took her
Sketch book out and
Started drawing tantric art
Who involved her and Boris
The friends asked
What happened to him
And she said
That he was happier in the mountains
And she couldn’t live there
For the sake of the children
When it came time to give birth
She had for daughters
To whom she promised not
To breathe a word of their
Father.
Over the years
She got stronger both emotionally
And physically
And the girls grew up
Like wild flowers
When the daughters whent to school
She opened her own dojo
And found another
Who her daughters called
Dad.
She never told him about Boris
Trying to pretend like they
Never met in that alley
Once a upon a time
Then her new husband saw the tattoos and the name
Who was Boris
He asked her
And then as the children slept
She said that she
Was once in love with a street punk
Who dragged her
To Tibet
And he lost touch of reality
She said that he was called Lama Tashi Surya
But she knew him as Boris
Claudia cried and then tried to move on with life
Until her one of daughters
Discovered in the mail
A letter in what she called Egyptian
And normal
It said that her husband
Lama Tashi Surya
Killed himself
The letter in tibetan was both a love letter and suicide note.
Her and her new husband
Got the others around and
Told the daughters
Of their real father
Lama Boris as Claudia called him.
She found the only suitable sketch of her beloved
And showed it do her daughters
Claudia felt like it was her fault
That the love
Of her life was dead.
She closed her school
And went to be a secretary
First she was a martial arts expert
And mistress
Then some insane punk’s lover
Now a mother
And wife.
She had to leave her passion karate behind along with Boris.
She framed the sketch and
Hung it up
Above the tv so when her daughters
Watched cartoons
They knew where they came from.
From time
To time
Claudia still had feelings
For the Russian punk
Who rocked her world.

Your bow is all elbow,
a flank of forearm that is
supporting and simply cradling
my imagination
where a dozen or so
lifeboats hang off starboard
in case things get too much

I, captained by your sturdy arms,
nip up to the crow’s nest
for a sip of spiced ***
for a bit of warmth and
perhaps more—

a full beard that reminds
me so much of Darwin
I feel certain I am on the Beagle
and hungry to shoot some
lame birds one by one!

Your shoulder
where I can sleep forever—
come sharks and eat my catch
while I whisper poetry,
summon ghosts and
******* Hemingway,
whose macho act was betrayed
by his pain-filled eyes
and sensitively painted
one-word skies

You, my aching hull
in human form,
rocking gently as the sea
slows our progress
knowing we are
wishing away time too often

the working of the gyro
prevents my seasick blushes
we do not yet know each other
that well but all is fine as I see it,
your arms really are made of
shipworthy wood and
beneath deck, where I will sleep
tonight above Atlantis’s cesspit,
we just bounce off each wave,
getting closer and closer to the moon
but not yet arrived,
has sleep come too soon for me tonight?

I’ll rest and stretch and groan
like weary ****** do
once Surya helps me turn out the light

*—Yes, once my ship did start to sink. I called until my throat was gone and ended up swimming a good distance until crucially a boat came by and pulled me out of the sea. I remember thinking: I should feel more grateful to be alive. I went back to where it sank and retrieved a few personal items, then I sat on the beach a wept as if the whole thing had just hit me.

Obrolan ceria menyambut pagi
Memaksaku menguap untuk terakhir kalinya
Suaramu bergetar lembut melalui sambungan telepon
Kau menceritakan mimpi semalam
Sambil menyanyikan sebuah lagu
Tak kau biarkan dunia melihatmu bersedih
Walau aku tahu,
Semalam tak sedikitpun kau mampu pejamkan mata

Derik jangkrik bertukar dengan kicau burung
Namun aku tak ingin apapun menukar dirimu
Kau adalah malaikat kala mimpi burukku
Kau layaknya bintang di siang hariku,
Surya pada malam-malamku

Kau nyanyikan sebuah lagu cinta
Suaramu menghangatkan sejuknya embun
Nafasmu menghidupkan diriku

I’ve seen signs of life grow
As they dance within fallout zones
Hunger’s war-waged
Ravaged plains where no Jesus goes
Shopping for happy
And shinier things
A bazaar kind of market
Where real freedom rings
Over cannons crowns used to blow babies to bits
But now lion kings bow in the tigress’ midst
And in piles of ****’s where they let the pigs squeal
But the monkeys as gods still respect what they feel
By the river, the nurturing mother, the giver
Created by Brahma, the people, the mirror
As clear as the lotus blooms Saraswati
With the grace of a swan in my speech therapy
Where the wisdom of elephants steps to progress
And the mercy for mice carries it to success
And the cobra don’t strike lest the mongoose is stressed
For Surya sent his very best from the West
As it sets in a sapphire mango mirage
And it adds to this human collective collage
With monsoonal communal’s resurgent potential
To never change climates on what is essential

I was born emanating from darkness
No bright a source could illuminate me
She was born radiating light
No dark a corner couldn’t be illuminated by her

As I grew, the darkness became intense
Blacking out the best and worst of things
As she grew, the light became brighter
Illuminating anything and everything she touched

Half the world was now bright
And the other half was, without light
We became unique in our own way
When the greatest challenge was just away

To fill the world with darkness, was mine
To illuminate it, was hers
Grandly, I started a journey towards her
Gracefully, she did, towards me

At the center of the world, we met
For the first time, that I’ll never forget
We were there at the boundary
She illuminating me, and me darkening her

It was only then we realized the truth
The eye opening, horrible truth
I had light in my darkness
And she had darkness in light

Then I understood my goal
And she understood hers
We were not different, but we were one
And our journey had long begun

Light filled my heart and darkness filled in her
We didn’t lose our qualities, but embraced the other
Together, neither of our quality did deplete
Because of us, this world became COMPLETE

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The courageous man I should be
And the coward I am

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The influencer I was supposed to be
And the manipulator I have become

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The man who stood against all odds
And the man who never tried anything

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The energetic guy I should be
And the tired guy I am

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The man who can create beautiful art
And the man who despises it

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The social, friendly guy I was to be
And the lonely, depressed person I am

I look into the broken mirror
And there I see them both
The man who did his work
And the one who cared about everyone else

Both of those people are in me
Waiting for their turns to perform
Who will come forward first?
Who will come forward often?

Dear reader, oh dear reader
I have something to say to you
I've been meaning to talk
In some way or the other

I am a lost, confused soul
Sometimes, even dark and hurting
And all those emotions inside me
Pour out into my writings

I cannot stop those emotions
And sometimes they hurt
But I am not hurt as much as
when you are not there for me

For all these days
You have been here for me
In my brightest days
And few of the darkest

You saw my Insanity
And you helped me find Purpose
You gave me Stories
And made me Complete

I cannot form enough words
To thank you for all you've done
I should create new words
Just to tell you how I feel

But, as a humble writer
I thank you cordially
Forever you shall be here
In a special place in my heart

Thank you, for being there when I needed
Thank you, for listening when I vent
Thank you, for supporting me from behind
Without you, I would have never made the leap

In the morning
Claudia woke to
Find her lover
Gone.
She want looking for him
Only to see Boris getting his head shaved
One of the monks said in broken English
That he live here
He look the part
They did not tough his piercings
Thank god
She thought but
“He is uniquely handsome with no hair” she thought to
Herself
When they got back to their appartment
He Boris told Claudia
That he wanted marry her
Before he started studying
To be a Lama.
He kissed her gently
And
While kissing Claudia
Ask what his name would
Be
Boris said after they got married
That his name will be Tashi Surya.
Claudia thought
That was gorgeous name
And kissed him.
So the former street urchin
Turn Lana was
Going to be her partner in life
As they made love
After she met with a local
To see were she could open up a school
For her to teach karate
Until the local said to teach
The monks
An idea that she did think of
She had to get the local
To translate for her
Since she couldn’t speak tibetan
When a deal was made
She saw that Boris aka Tashi
Was talking in tibetan with
His new friends.
She knew he spoke some Russian
But this was a surprise.
When they were alone
She asked him to teach
Her while they made love
Every night.
She learned better that way.
With in a few nights of love making
With practice conversation
She was flaunt.
Claudia during the day
Either practiced her karate
Or started sketching.
She was drawing people
And the other monks
One was beautiful
And loved using him as a model
She soon started talking to him
And felt unusual feelings
For the fellow.
She did not tell Boris about her crush
But he saw the pictures she drew
He felt no jealousy
Thinking that bushido
MAde her loyal to him.
He kissed her
And said that in a few days
They would be in wedded bliss
After they got married
Claudia and who was named Tashi
Still had gently passion only at night
He whispered that he will always be Boris
To her.
Heart shaped Kisses rise from my lips
like a thousand butterflies
twinkling across the baby blue skies

I love You Divine Mother and Father
Thank you for this sacred day

I kiss the gawky trees
zip-lining down the streets
and avenues

I kiss the young birds
squawking intermittent rounds
from their nests

I kiss the ginger brown
good luck rabbit
nibbling palm nuts on
our front lawn

I kiss the teens
their heads bent adoringly
over their phones
bungling reluctantly onto
the yellow school bus

I kiss my darling hubby
strolling with me
down Perry Street
taking in the beauty
of this sacred day

I kiss Lord Surya peeking
from behind gray rain clouds
His hand raised in blessing

I kiss you reading this poem,
my dear Brothers and Sisters
Peace Be With You Always

I don’t know who I am
or where I belong
I am just a little poor kid
Whose parents are long gone.

Every scar you see on my face
Has some story to tell.
The life right now I have
Is a living hell.

Every day I pack my bags
And pray my god to send me home
I don’t belong here
I am all alone.

I dream of a gentle heart is on way
To  kiss my scars and take me away
But for now I am just a poor little orphan
Lost in the world of unknowns.

The body that I beautified over the years
Had eaten by unseen scavengers,
Left my soul lone and lost-
I found hardly few, crying, at my funeral
Few held me for days
Few for years in their memories
That faded, eventually, away like morning mist-
But when will my soul die?

Swami Krishna's eyes flashed
lightning bolts illumining his round, brahmin
raincloud colored face.

Igniting logs in the huge fire pit
for our ancestral puja
he chanted ancient vedic hymns,
it was a beautiful offering on
this venerable Sunday morning.

Rites for remembering ancestors
is a tradition in many cultures,
not so much in the west.

Swami Krishna elaborated on its
importance:
We thank them for the good,
for laying the groundwork and support of
our lineage.

We remember them with
love and gratitude,
he stated, wrapping the yellow and red
priestly shawl closer to his body.

Strong, musky, acrid, odor of wood burning
stung our nostrils
one by one, ritualistically we added
ghee, incense sticks, flowers, herbs
and rice to the auspicious serpentine
flames

I could sense my mother near
spicy whiff of curry and channel no. 5
mixing with clouds of smoke

A secret door slowly opened in the heavens
as a procession of ghostly relatives
took their place around the blazing havan

It was almost high noon
and Surya, the Sun God
halted His brilliant chariot
driven by 7 rainbow hued horses

Hovering mid-air over our holy gathering
He raised His Golden Hands in Blessing

Surya Namaskar in the bright morning sun

every little part of me comes alive

and my fingers lift me off the ground

pressing powerfully

how wondrous are we

breathing, living, conscious beings

standing mountains

all equal

vast as the vastness
Waves leap and frolic
silver dolphins
in the misty aqua blue

Sri Surya lifts the
umbrella of clouds
hovering over our
happy, buoyant cruise ship

Oceans of people
roam through portholes,
zig zag stairwells,
white washed decks

sporting vacation smiles and
tee shirts that read:
"No worries mon"

lots and lots of food
smorgasbords
fizzy beverages flow
on the merry crests
rocking to and fro
