In Praise of Love(film) - In Praise of Love(French: Eloge de l'amour)(2001) is a French film directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Flicker Shimmer Glow

The brightest star can shine even with thick black velvet draped over it.  
Quartz, lime and salt crystals formed a glass ball.
The dark womb held me, warm and soft.  
My mom called my cries when I was born the most sorrowful sound she had ever heard.  
She said she’d never heard a baby make a sound like that.    
I’d open my eyes in low light until the world’s light healed rather than hurt.  
The summer before eighth grade, July 1992,
I watched a shooting star burn by at 100,000 miles per hour as I stood on the balcony  
while my family celebrated my birthday inside.  
It made it into the earth’s atmosphere
but it didn’t look like it was coming down;
I know it didn’t hit the ground but it burned something in the time it was here.  
The glass ball of my life cracked inside.  
Light reflected off the salt crystal cracks.  
I saw the beauty of the light within.  
Nacre from my shell kept those cracks from getting worse,
a wild pearl as defense mechanism.  
In 2001, I quit my job after they melted and poured tar all over my life.  
All summer literature class bathtubs filled with rose hip oil cleaned the tar.  
That fall logic and epistemology classes spewed black ink all over my philosophy
written over ten years then.  
Tar turned to asphalt when I met someone from my old job for a drink in November
and it paved a road for my life that went to the hospital I was in that December
where it sealed the roof on my life
when I was almost murdered there
and in February after meeting her for another drink.  
They lit a fire at the top of the glacier and pushed the burning pile of black coal off the edge,
burnt red, looking like flames falling into the valley.  
While that blazed the side of the cliff something lit an incandescent light.  
The electricity from the metal lightbulb ***** went through wires and heated the filament between until it glowed.  
I began putting more work into emotional balance from things I learned at AA meetings.  
In Spring 2003, the damage that the doctors at the hospital in 2001 had done
made it harder for light to reflect from the cracks in the glass ball.
I’d been eating healthy and trying to get regular exercises since 1994
but in Spring 2003 I began swimming for an hour every morning .  
The water washed the pollution from the burning coals off
And then I escaped in July.  
I moved to London to study English Language and Linguistics.  
I would’ve studied English Language and Literature.  
I did well until Spring 2004 when I thought I was being stalked.  
I thought I was manic.  
I thought I was being stalked.  
I went home and didn’t go back for my exams after spring holiday.  
Because I felt traumatized and couldn’t write poetry anymore,
I used black ink to write my notes for my book on trauma and the Russian Revolution.
I started teaching myself German.  
I stayed healthy.  
In 2005, my parents went to visit my mom’s family in Malaysia for two weeks.
I thought I was being stalked.  
I knew I wasn’t manic.  
I thought I was being stalked.  
I told my parents when they came home.  
They thought I was manic.  
I showed them the shoe prints in the snow of different sizes from the woods to the windows.  
They thought I was manic.  
I was outside of my comfort zone.  
I moved to California. I found light.  
I made light,
the light reflected off the salt crystals I used to heal the violence inflicted on me from then on.  
The light turned the traffic lights to not just green from red
but amber and blue.  
The light turned the car signals left and right.  
The light reflected off of salt crystals, light emitting diodes,
electrical energy turned directly to light,
electroluminescence.  
The electrical currents flowed through,
illuminating.  
Alone in the world, I moved to California in July 2005
but in August  I called the person I escaped in 2003,
the sulfur and nitrogen that I hated.  
He didn’t think I was manic but I never said anything.
I never told him why I asked him to move out to California.  
When his coal seemed like only pollution,
I asked him to leave.  
He threatened me.  
I called the authorities.  
They left me there.
He laughed.  
Then the violence came.  
****:  stabbed and punched, my ****** bruised, purple and swollen.  
The light barely reflected from the glass ball wIth cracks through all the acid rain, smoke and haze.
It would take me half an hour to get my body to do what my mind told it to after.  
My dad told me my mom had her cancer removed.
The next day, the coal said if I wanted him to leave he’d leave.  
I booked his ticket.
I drove him to the airport.  
Black clouds gushed the night before for the first time in months,
the sky clear after the rain.  
He was gone and I was free,
melted glass, heated up and poured—
looked like fire,
looked like the Snow Moon in February
with Mercury in the morning sky.  
I worked through ****.  
I worked to overcome trauma.  
Electricity between touch and love caused acid rain, smoke, haze, and mercury
to light the discharge lamps, streetlights and parking lot lights.
Then I changed the direction of the light waves.  
Like lead glass breaks up the light,
lead from the coal, cleaned and replaced by potassium,
glass cut clearly, refracting the light,
electrolytes,
electrical signals lit through my body,
thick black velvet drapes gone.  





















Lava

I think that someone wrote into some palm leaf a manuscript, a gift, a contract.  
After my parents wedding, while they were still in India,
they found out that my dad’s father and my mom’s grandfather worked for kings administering temples and collecting money for their king from the farmers that worked the rice paddies each king owned.  They both left their homes before they left for college.  
My dad, a son of a brahmin’s son,
grew up in his grandmother’s house.  
His mother was not a Brahmin.  
My mother grew up in Malaysia where she saw the children from the rubber plantation
when she walked to school.  
She doesn’t say what caste she is.  
He went to his father’s house, then college.  
He worked, then went to England, then Canada.  
She went to India then Canada.  
They moved to the United States around Christmas 1978
with my brother while she was pregnant with me.  
My father signed a contract with my mother.  
My parents took ashes and formed rock,
the residue left in brass pots in India,
the rocks, so hot, they turned back to lava miles away before turning back to ash again,
then back to rock,
the lava from a super volcano,
the ash purple and red.

The eruption beatifies the magma.  
It becomes obsidian,
only breaks with a fracture,
smooth circles where it breaks.  

My mom was born on the grass
on a lawn
in a moss covered canyon at the top of a volcanic island.  
My grandfather lived in Malaysia before the Japanese occupied.  
When the volcano erupted,
the lava dried at the ocean into black sand.  
The British allied with the Communist Party of Malaysia—
after they organized.  
After the Americans defeated the Japanese at Pearl Harbor,
the British took over Malaysia again.  
They kept different groups apart claiming they were helping them.  
The black sand had smooth pebbles and sharp rocks.  
Ethnic Malay farmers lived in Kampongs, villages.  
Indians lived on plantations.  
The Chinese lived in towns and urban areas.  
Ethnic Malays wanted independence.
In 1946, after strikes, demonstrations, and boycotts
the British agreed to work with them.  
The predominantly Chinese Communist Party of Malaysia went underground,
guerrilla warfare against the British,
claiming their fight was for independence.  
For the British, that emergency required vast powers
of arrest, detention without trial and deportation to defeat terrorism.  
The Emergency became less unpopular as the terrorism became worse.  
The British were the iron that brought oxygen through my mom’s body.  
She loved riding on her father’s motorcycle with him
by the plantations,
through the Kampongs
and to the city, half an hour away.  
The British left Malaysia independent in 1957
with Malaysian nationalists holding most state and federal government offices.  
As the black sand stretches towards the ocean,
it becomes big stones of dried lava, flat and smooth.  

My mom thought her father and her uncle were subservient to the British.  
She thought all things, all people were equal.  
When her father died when she was 16, 1965,
they moved to India,
my mother,
a foreigner in India, though she’s Indian.  
She loved rock and roll and mini skirts
and didn’t speak the local language.  
On the dried black lava,
it can be hard to know the molten lava flickers underneath there.  
Before the Korean War,
though Britain and the United States wanted
an aggressive resolution
condemning North Korea,
they were happy
that India supported a draft resolution
condemning North Korea
for breach of the peace.  
During the Korean War,
India, supported by Third World and other Commonwealth nations,
opposed United States’ proposals.
They were able to change the U.S. resolution
to include the proposals they wanted
and helped end the war.  
China wanted the respect of Third World nations
and saw the United States as imperialist.  
China thought India was a threat to the Third World
by taking aid from the United States and the Soviets.  
Pakistan could help with that and a seat at the United Nations.  
China wanted Taiwan’s seat at the UN.
My mother went to live with her uncle,
a communist negotiator for a corporation,
in India.  
A poet,
he threw parties and invited other artists, musicians and writers.  
I have the same brown hyperpigmentation at my joints that he had.  
During the day, only the steam from the hot lava can be seen.  
In 1965, Pakistani forces went into Jammu and Kashmir with China’s support.  
China threatened India after India sent its troops in.  
Then they threatened again before sending their troops to the Indian border.  
The United States stopped aid to Pakistan and India.
Pakistan agreed to the UN ceasefire agreement.  
Pakistan helped China get a seat at the UN
and tried to keep the west from escalating in Vietnam.  
The smoldering sound of the lava sizzles underneath the dried lava.  
When West Pakistan refused to allow East Pakistan independence,
violence between Bengalis and Biharis developed into upheaval.  
Bengalis moved to India
and India went into East Pakistan.  
Pakistan surrendered in December 1971.  
East Pakistan became independent Bangladesh

The warm light of the melted lava radiates underneath but burns.  
In 1974, India tested the Smiling Buddha,
a nuclear bomb.  
After Indira Gandhi’s conviction for election fraud in 1973,
Marxist Professor Narayan called for total revolution
and students protested all over India.  
With food shortages, inflation and regional disputes
like Sikh separatists training in Pakistan for an independent Punjab,
peasants and laborers joined the protests.  
Railway strikes stopped the economy.  
In 1975, Indira Gandhi, the Iron Lady,
declared an Emergency,
imprisoning political opponents, restricting freedoms and restricting the press,
claiming threats to national security
because the war with Pakistan had just ended.  
The federal government took over Kerala’s communist dominated government and others.  

My mom could’ve been a dandelion, but she’s more like thistle.  
She has the center that dries and flutters in the wind,
beautiful and silky,
spiny and prickly,
but still fluffy, downy,
A daisy.
They say thistle saved Scotland from the Norse.  
Magma from the volcano explodes
and the streams of magma fly into the air.  
In the late 60s,
the civil rights movement rose
against the state in Northern Ireland
for depriving Catholics
of influence and opportunity.
The Northern Irish police,
Protestant and unionist, anti-catholic,
responded violently to the protests and it got worse.  
In 1969, the British placed Arthur Young,
who had worked at the Federation of Malaya
at the time of their Emergency
at the head of the British military in Northern Ireland.
The British military took control over the police,
a counter insurgency rather than a police force,
crowd control, house searches, interrogation, and street patrols,
use of force against suspects and uncooperative citizens.  
Political crimes were tolerated by Protestants but not Catholics.  
The lava burns the rock off the edge of the volcano.  

On January 30, 1972, ****** Sunday,  
British Army policing killed 13 unarmed protesters
fighting for their rights over their neighborhood,
protesting the internment of suspected nationalists.
That led to protests across Ireland.  
When banana leaves are warmed,

My dad flew from Canada to India in February 1972.  
On February 4, my dad met my mom.  
On February 11, 1972,
my dad married my mom.  
They went to Canada,
a quartz singing bowl and a wooden mallet wrapped in suede.

In March 1972, the British government took over
because they considered the Royal Ulster Police and the Ulster Special Constabulary
to be causing most of the violence.

without being judged
with my dad in Canada.  
She didn’t like asking my dad for money.
My dad, the copper helping my mother use that iron,

In 1976, the police took over again in Northern Ireland
but they were a paramilitary force—
armored SUVs, bullet proof jackets, combat ready
with the largest computerized surveillance system in the UK,
high powered weapons,
trained in counter insurgency.  
Many people were murdered by the police
and few were held accountable.  
Most of the murdered people were not involved in violence or crime.  
People were arrested under special emergency powers
for interrogation and intelligence gathering.  
People tried were tried in non-jury courts.  
My mom learned Malayalam in India
but didn’t speak well until living with my dad.  
She also learned to cook after getting married.  
Her mother sent her recipes; my dad cooked for her—
turmeric, cumin, coriander, cayenne and green chiles.  
Having lived in different countries,
my mom’s food was exposed to many cultures,
Chinese and French.
Ground rock, minerals and glass
covered the ground
from the ash plume.  
She liked working.  

A volcano erupted for 192 years,
an ice age,
disordered ices, deformed under pressure
and ordered ice crystals, brittle in the ice core records.  
My mother liked working.  
Though Khomeini was in exile by the 1970s in Iran,
more people, working and poor,
turned to him and the ****-i-Ulama for help.
My mom didn’t want kids though my dad did.
She agreed and in 1978 my brother was born.
Iran modernized but agriculture and industry changed so quickly.  
In January 1978, students protested—
censorship, surveillance, harassment, illegal detention and torture.  
Young people and the unemployed joined.  
My parents moved to the United States in December 1978.  
The regime used a lot of violence against the protesters,
and in September 1978 declared martial law in Iran.  
Troops were shooting demonstrators.
In January 1979, the Shah and his family fled.  
On February 11, 1979, my parents’ anniversary,
the Iranian army declared neutrality.  
I was born in July 1979.
The chromium in emeralds and rubies colors them.
My brother was born in May and I was born in July.

Warm Light Shatters

The eruption beatifies the magma.  
It becomes obsidian,
only breaks with a fracture,
smooth circles where it breaks.  

My dad was born on a large flat rock on the edge of the top
of a hill,
Molasses, sweet and dark, the potent flavor dominates,
His father, the son of a Brahmin,
His mother from a lower caste.
His father’s family wouldn’t touch him,
He grew up in his mother’s mother’s house on a farm.  
I have the same brown hyperpigmentation spot on my right hand that he has.

In 1901, D’Arcy bought a 60 year concession for oil exploration In Iran.
The Iranian government extended it for another 32 years in 1933.
At that time oil was Iran’s “main source of income.”
In 1917’s Balfour Declaration, the British government proclaimed that they favored a national home for the Jews in Palestine and their “best endeavors to facilitate the achievement” of that.

The British police were in charge of policing in the mandate of Palestine.  A lot of the policemen they hired were people who had served in the British army before, during the Irish War for Independence.  
The army tried to stop how violent the police were, police used torture and brutality, some that had been used during the Irish War for Independence, like having prisoners tied to armored cars and locomotives and razing the homes of people in prison or people they thought were related to people thought to be rebels.
The police hired Arab police and Jewish police for lower level policing,
Making local people part of the management.
“Let Arab police beat up Arabs and Jewish police beat up Jews.”

In 1922, there were 83,000 Jews, 71,000 Christians, and 589,000 Muslims.
The League If Nations endorsed the British Mandate.
During an emergency, in the 1930s, British regulations allowed collective punishment, punishing villages for incidents.
Local officers in riots often deserted and also shared intelligence with their own people.
The police often stole, destroyed property, tortured and killed people.  
Arab revolts sapped the police power over Palestinians by 1939.

My father’s mother was from a matrilineal family.
My dad remembers tall men lining up on pay day to respectfully wait for her, 5 feet tall.  
She married again after her husband died.
A manager from a tile factory,
He spoke English so he supervised finances and correspondence.
My dad, a sunflower, loved her: she scared all the workers but exuded warmth to the people she loved.

Obsidian shields people from negative energy.
David Cargill founded the Burmah Oil Co. in 1886.
If there were problems with oil exploration in Burma and Indian government licenses, Persian oil would protect the company.  
In July 1906, many European oil companies, BP, Royal Dutch Shell and others, allied to protect against the American oil company, Standard Oil.
D’Arcy needed money because “Persian oil took three times as long to come on stream as anticipated.”
Burmah Oil Co. began the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. as a subsidiary.
Ninety-seven percent of British Petroleum was owned by Burmah Oil Co.
By 1914, the British government owned 51% of the Anglo-Persian Oil Co.  
Anglo-Persian acquired independence from Burmah Oil and Royal Dutch Shell with two million pounds from the British government.

The United Nations had to find other sources of oil.
In 1943, Japan built the Burma-Thailand Railroad with forced labor from the Malay peninsula who were mostly from the rubber plantations.

Cargill, Watson and Whigham were on the Burmah Oil Co. Board and then the Anglo Iranian Oil Co. Board.  

In 1936 Palestine, boycotts, work stoppages, and violence against British police officials and soldiers compelled the government to appoint an investigatory commission.  
Leaders of Egypt, Trans Jordan, Syria and Iraq helped end the work stoppages.
The British government had the Peel Commission read letters, memoranda, and petitions and speak with British officials, Jews and Arabs.  
The Commission didn’t believe that Arabs and Jews could live together in a single Jewish state.
Because of administrative and financial difficulties the Colonial Secretary stated that to split Palestine into Arab and Jewish states was impracticable.  
The Commission recommended transitioning 250,000 Arabs and 1500 Jews with British control over their oil pipeline, their naval base and Jerusalem.  
The League of Nations approved.
“It will not remove the grievance nor prevent the recurrence,” Lord Peel stated after.
The Arab uprising was much more militant after Peel.  Thousands of Arabs were wounded, ten thousand were detained.  
In Sykes-Picot and the Husain McMahon agreements, the British promised the Arabs an independent state but they did not keep that promise.  
Representatives from the Arab states rejected the Peel recommendations.
United Nations General Assembly Resolution181 partitioned Palestine into Arab and Jewish states with an international regime for the city of Jerusalem backed by the United States and the Soviet Union.  

The Israeli Yishuv had strong military and intelligence organization —-  
the British recognized that their interest was with the Arabs and abstained from the vote.  
In 1948, Israel declared the establishment of its state.  
Ground rock, minerals, and gas covered the ground from the ash plume.
The Palestinian police force was disbanded and the British gave officers the option of serving in Malaya.

Though Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy supported snd tried to get Israel to offer the Arabs concessions, it wasn’t a major priority and didn’t always approve of Israel’s plans.
Arabs that had supported the British to end Turkish rule stopped supporting the West.  
Many Palestinians joined left wing groups and violent third world movements.  
Seventy-eight percent of the territory of former Palestine was under Israel’s control.  

My dad left for college in 1957 and lived in an apartment above the United States Information services office.
Because he graduated at the top of his class, he was given a job with the public works department of the government on the electricity board.  
“Once in, you’ll never leave.”
When he wanted a job where he could do real work, his father was upset.
He broke the chains with bells for vespers.
He got a job in Calcutta at Kusum Products and left the government, though it was prestigious to work there.
In the chemical engineering division, one of the projects he worked on was to design a *** distillery, bells controlled by hammers, hammers controlled by a keyboard.
His boss worked in the United Kingdom for. 20 years before the company he worked at, part of Power Gas Corporation, asked him to open a branch in Calcutta.
He opened the branch and convinced an Industrialist to open a company doing the same work with him.  The branch he opened closed after that.  
My dad applied for labor certification to work abroad and was selected.  
His boss wrote a reference letter for my him to the company he left in the UK.  My dad sent it telling the company when he was leaving for the UK.  
The day he left for London, he got the letter they sent in the mail telling him to take the train to Sheffield the next day and someone from the firm would meet him at the station.  
His dad didn’t know he left, he didn’t tell him.
He broke the chains with chimes for schisms.


Anglo-Persian Oil became Anglo-Iranian Oil in 1935.
The British government used oil and Anglo-Persian oil to fight communism, have a stronger relationship with the United States and make the United Kingdom more powerful.  
The National Secularists, the Tudeh, and the Communists wanted to nationalize Iran’s oil and mobilized the Iranian people.
The British feared nationalization in Iran would incite political parties like the Secular Nationalists all over the world.  
In 1947, the Iranian government passed the Single Article Law that “[increased] investment In welfare benefits, health, housing, education, and implementation of Iranianization through substitution of foreigners” at Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.
“Anglo-Iranian Oil Company made more profit in 1950 than it paid to the Iranian government in royalties over the previous half century.”
The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company tried to negotiate a new concession and claimed they’d hire more Iranian people into jobs held by British and people from other nationalities at the company.
Their hospitals had segregated wards.  
On May 1, 1951, the Iranian government passed a bill that nationalized Anglo- Iranian Oil Co.’s holdings.  
During the day, only the steam from the hot lava can be seen.
In August 1953, the Iranian people elected Mossadegh from the Secular Nationalist Party as prime minister.
The British government with the CIA overthrew Mossadegh using the Iranian military after inducing protests and violent demonstrations.  
Anglo-Iranian Oil changed its name to British Petroleum in 1954.
Iranians believe that America destroyed Iran’s “last chance for democracy” and blamed America for Iran’s autocracy, its human rights abuses, and secret police.

In 1946, Executive Yuan wanted control over 4 groups of Islands in the South China Sea to have a stronger presence there:  the Paracels, the Spratlys, Macclesfield Bank, and the Pratas.
The French forces in the South China Sea would have been stronger than the Chinese Navy then.
French Naval forces were in the Gulf of Tonkin, U.S. forces were in the Taiwan Strait, the British were in Hong Kong, and the Portuguese were in Macao.
In the 1950s, British snd U.S. oil companies thought there might be oil in the Spratlys.  
By 1957, French presence in the South China Sea was hardly there.

Ne Win thought that western political
Institutions “encouraged divisions.”
Minority groups found foreign support for their separatist goals.
The Karens and the Mons supported U Nu in Bangkok.

In 1965, my Dad’s cousin met him at Heathrow, gave him a coat and £10 and brought him to a bed and breakfast across from Charing Cross Station where he’d get the train to Sheffield the next morning.

Quartz, heat and fade resistant, though he was an engineer and did the work of an engineer, my dad only had the title, technician so my dad’s boss thought he wasn’t getting paid enough but couldn’t get his boss to offer more than an extra $100/week or the title of engineer; he told my dad he thought he should leave.
In 1969, he got a job at Celanese, which made rayon.
He quit Celanese to work at McGill University and they allowed him to take classes to earn his MBA while working.  

The United States and Israel’s alliance was strong by 1967.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 at the end of the Third Arab Israeli War didn’t mention the Palestinians but mentioned the refugee problem.
After 1967, the Palestinians weren’t often mentioned and when mentioned only as terrorists.  
Palestinians’ faith in the “American sponsored peace process” diminished, they felt the world community ignored and neglected them also.
Groups like MAN that stopped expecting anything from Arab regimes began hijacking airplanes.
By 1972, the Palestine Liberation Organization had enough international support to get by the United States’ veto in the United Nations Security Council and Arab League recognition as representative of the Palestinian people.
The Palestinians knew the United States stated its support, as the British had, but they weren’t able to accomplish anything.  
The force Israel exerted in Johnson’s United States policy delivered no equilibrium for the Palestinians.  

In 1969, all political parties submitted to the BSPP, Burma Socialist Programme Party.
Ne Win nationalized banks and oil and deprived minorities of opportunities.
Ne Win became U Nu Win, civilian leader of Burma in 1972 and stopped the active role that U Nu defined for Burma internationally
He put military people in power even when they didn’t have experience which triggered “maldistribution of goods and chronic shortages.”  
Resources were located in areas where separatist minorities had control.

The British presence in the South China Sea ended in 1968.  
The United States left Vietnam in 1974 and China went into the Western Paracels.
The U.S. didn’t intervene and Vietnam took the Spratlys.
China wanted to claim the continental shelf In the central part of the South China Sea and needed the Spratlys.
The United States mostly disregarded the Ulama In Iran and bewildered the Iranian people by not supporting their revolution.

Edelweiss

I laid out in my backyard in my bikini.  
I love the feeling of my body in the sun.  
I’d be dark from the end of spring until winter.
The snow froze my bare feet through winter ,
my skin pale.
American towns in 1984,
Free, below glaciers the sunlight melted the snow,
a sea of green and the edelweiss on the edge of the  limestone,
frosted but still strong.    
When the spring warmed the grass,
the grass warmed my feet. 
The whole field looked cold and white from the glacier but in the meadow,
the bright yellow centers of those flowers float free in the center of the white petals.
The bright yellow center of those edelweiss scared the people my parents ran to America from India to get away from.  
On a sidewalk in Queens, New York in 1991, the men stared and yelled comments at me in short shorts and a fitted top in the summer.  
I grabbed my dad’s arm.

























The Bread and Coconut Butter of Aparigraha

Twelve year old flowerhead,
Marigold, yarrow and nettle,
I’d be all emotion
If not for all my work
From the time I was a teenager.
I got depressed a lot.
I related to people I read about
In my weather balloon,
Grasping, ignorant, and desperate,
But couldn’t relate to other twelve year olds.
After school I read Dali’s autobiography,
Young ****** Autosodomized by Her Own Chastity.
Fresh, green nettle with fresh and dried yarrow for purity.
Dead souls enticed to the altar by orange marigolds,
passion and creativity,
Coax sleep and rouse dreams.
Satellites measure indirectly with wave lengths of light.
My weather balloon measures the lower and middle levels of the atmosphere directly,
Fifty thousand feet high,
Metal rod thermometer,
Slide humidity sensor,
Canister for air pressure.

I enjoy rye bread and cold coconut butter in my weather balloon,
But I want Dali, and all the artists and writers.
Rye grows at high altitudes
But papyrus grows in soil and shallow water,
Strips of papyrus pith shucked from their stems.
When an anchor’s weighed, a ship sails,
But when grounded we sail.
Marigolds, yarrow and nettle,
Flowerhead,
I use the marigold for sleep,
The yarrow for endurance and intensity,
toiling for love and truth,
And the nettle for healing.
Strong rye bread needs equally strong flavors.
By the beginning of high school,
I read a lot of Beat literature
And found Buddhism.
I loved what I read
But I didn’t like some things.
I liked attachment.  
I got to the ground.
Mushrooms grow in dry soil.
Attachment to beauty is Buddha activity.
Not being attached to things I don’t find beautiful is Buddha activity.  
I fried mushrooms in a single layer in oil, fleshy.
I roasted mushrooms at high temperatures in the oven, crisp.
I simmered mushrooms in stock with kombu.
Rye bread with cold coconut butter and cremini mushrooms,
raw, soft and firm.  
Life continues, life changes,
Attachments, losses, mourning and suffering,
But change lures growth.
I find stream beds and wet soil.
I lay the strips of papyrus next to each other.
I cross papyrus strips over the first,
Then wet the crossed papyrus strips,
Press and cement them into a sheet.
I hammer it and dry it in the sun,
With no thought of achievement or self,
Flowerhead,
Hands filled with my past,
Head filled with the future,
Dali, artists poets,
Wishes and desires aligned with nature,
Abundance,
Cocoa, caraway, and molasses.

If I ever really like someone,
I’ll be wearing the dress he chooses,
Fresh green nettle and yarrow, the seeds take two years to grow strong,
Lasting love.
Marigolds steer dead souls from the altar to the afterlife,
Antiseptic, healing wounds,
Soothing sore throats and headaches.
Imperturbable, stable flowerhead,
I empty my mind.
When desires are aligned with nature, desire flows.
Papyrus makes paper and cloth.
Papyrus makes sails.
Charcoal from the ash of pulverized papyrus heals wounds.
Without attachment to the fruit of action
There is continuation of life,
Rye bread and melted coconut butter,
The coconut tree in the coconut butter,
The seed comes from the ground out of nothing,
Naturalness.
It has form.
As the seed grows the seed expresses the tree,
The seed expresses the coconut,
The seed expresses the coconut butter.

Desire for expansion and creation,
No grasping, not desperate.
When the mind is compassion, the mind is boundless.

The heartwood writhes as hurricane gales, twisters and whirlwinds

Orris root dried in the sun, bulbs like wood.
Dahlia runs to baritone soundbath radio waves.
Light has frequencies,
Violet between blue and invisible ultraviolet,
Flame, slate and flint.
Every night is cold.

Torii gates, pain secured as sacred.
An assignation, frost hardy dahlia and a plangent resonant echo.
High frequency sound waves convert to electrical signals,
Breathe from someone I want,
Silt.
Beam, radiate, ensorcel.
I break the bark,
Sap flows and dries,
Resin seals over the tear.
I distill pine,
Resin and oil for turpentine, a solvent.
Quiver, bemired,
I lead sound into my darkness,
Orris butter resin, sweet and warm,
Hot jam drops on snow drops,
Orange ash on smoke,
Balm on lava,
The problem with cotton candy.

Electrical signals give off radiation or light waves,
The narrow frequency range where
The crest of a radio wave and the crest of a light wave overlap,
Infrared.
Glaciers flow, sunlight melts the upper layers of the snow when strong,
A wet snow avalanche,
A torrent, healing.
Brown sugar and whiskey,
Undulant, lavender.
Pine pitch, crystalline, sticky, rich and golden,
And dried pine rosin polishes glass smooth
Like the smell of powdery orris after years.
Softness, flush, worthy/not worthy,
Rich rays thunder,
Intensify my pulse,
Frenzied red,
Violet between blue and invisible ultraviolet.
Babylon—flutter, glow.
Unquenchable cathartic orris.  

















Pink Graphite

Camellias, winter shrubs,
Their shallow roots grow beneath the spongy caribou moss,
Robins egg blue.
After writing a play with my gifted students program in 1991,
I stopped spending all my free time writing short stories,
But the caribou moss was still soft.

In the cold Arctic of that town,
The evergreen protected the camellias from the afternoon sun and storms.
They branded hardy camellias with a brass molded embossing iron;
I had paper and graphite for my pencils.

After my ninth grade honors English teacher asked us to write poems in 1994,
It began raining.
We lived on an overhang.
A vertical rise to the top of the rock.
The rainstorm caused a metamorphic change in the snowpack,
A wet snow avalanche drifted slowly down the moss covered rock,
The snow already destabilized by exposure to the sunlight.

The avalanche formed lakes,
rock basins washed away with rainwater and melted snow,
Streams dammed by the rocks.  
My pencils washed away in the avalanche,
My clothes heavy and cold.
I wove one side of each warp fiber through the eye of the needle and one side through each slot,
Salves, ointments, serums and tinctures.
I was mining for graphite.
They were mining me,
The only winch, the sound through the water.

A steep staircase to the red Torii gates,
I broke the chains with bells for vespers
And chimes for schisms,
And wove the weft across at right angles to the warp.  

On a rocky ledge at the end of winter,
The pink moon, bitters and body butter,
They tried to get  me to want absinthe,
Wormwood for bitterness and regret.
Heat and pressure formed carbon for flakes of graphite.
Heat and pressure,
I made bitters,
Brandy, grapefruit, chocolate, mandarin rind, tamarind and sugar.
I grounded my feet in the pink moss,
paper dried in one hand,
and graphite for my pencils in the other.  



































Flakes

I don’t let people that put me down be part of my life.  
Gardens and trees,
My shadow sunk in the grass in my yard
As I ate bread, turmeric and lemon.
Carbon crystallizes into graphite flakes.
I write to see well,
Graphite on paper.  
A shadow on rock tiles with a shield, a diamond and a bell
Had me ***** to humiliate me.
Though I don’t let people that put me down near me,
A lot of people putting me down seemed like they were following me,
A platform to jump from
While she had her temple.  

There was a pink door to the platform.
I ate bread with caramelized crusts and
Drank turmeric lemonade
Before I opened that door,
Jumped and
Descended into blankets and feathers.
I found matches and rosin
For turpentine to clean,
Dried plums and licorice.  

In the temple,
In diamonds, leather, wool and silk,
She had her shield and bells,
Drugs and technology,
Thermovision 210 and Minox,
And an offering box where people believed
That if their coins went in
Their wishes would come true.

Hollyhock and smudging charcoal for work,  
Belled,
I ground grain in the mill for the bread I baked for breakfast.
The bells are now communal bells
With a watchtower and a prison,
Her shield, a blowtorch and flux,
Her ex rays, my makeshift records
Because Stalin didn’t like people dancing,
He liked them divebombing.
Impurities in the carbon prevent diamonds from forming,
Measured,
The most hard, the most expensive,
But graphite’s soft delocalized electrons move.  






































OCEAN BED

The loneliness of going to sleep by myself.  
I want a bed that’s high off the ground,
a mattress, an ocean.
I want a crush and that  person in my bed.  
Only that,
a crush in my bed,
an ocean in my bed.  
Just love.  
But I sleep with my thumbs sealed.  
I sleep with my hands, palms up.  
I sleep with my hands at my heart.  
They sear my compassion with their noise.  
They hold their iron over their fire and try to carve their noise into my love,
scored by the violence of voices, dark and lurid,  
but not burned.  
I want a man in my bed.  
When I wake up in an earthquake
I want to be held through the aftershocks.  
I like men,
the waves come in and go out
but the ocean was part of my every day.  
I don’t mind being fetishized in the ocean.  
I ran by the ocean every morning.  
I surfed in the ocean.  
I should’ve gone into the ocean that afternoon at Trestles,
holding my water jugs, kneeling at the edge.  














Morning

I want to fall asleep in the warm arms of a fireman.  
I want to wake up to the smell of coffee in my kitchen.  

Morning—the molten lava in the outer core of the earth embeds the iron from the inner core into the earth’s magnetic field.  
The magnetic field flips.  
The sun, so strong, where it gets through the trees it burns everything but the pine.  
The winds change direction.  
Storms cast lightening and rain.  
Iron conducts solar flares and the heavy wind.  
In that pine forest, I shudder every time I see a speck of light for fear of neon and fluorescents.  The eucalyptus cleanses congestion.  
And Kerouac’s stream ululates, crystal bowl sound baths.  
I follow the sound to the water.  
The stream ends at a bluff with a thin rocky beach below.  
The green water turns black not far from the shore.  
Before diving into the ocean, I eat globe mallow from the trees, stems and leaves, the viscous flesh, red, soft and nutty.  
I distill the pine from one of the tree’s bark and smudge the charcoal over my skin.  

Death, the palo santo’s lit, cleansing negative energy.  
It’s been so long since I’ve smelled a man, woodsmoke, citrus and tobacco.  
Jasmine, plum, lime and tuberose oil on the base of my neck comforts.  
Parabolic chambers heal, sound waves through water travel four times faster.  
The sound of the open sea recalibrates.  
I dissolve into the midnight blue of the ocean.  

I want to fall asleep in the warm arms of a fireman.  
I want to wake up to the smell of coffee in my kitchen.  
I want hot water with coconut oil when I get up.  
We’d lay out on the lawn, surrounded by high trees that block the wind.  
Embers flying through the air won’t land in my yard, on my grass, or near my trees.  





Blue Paper

Haze scatters blue light on a planet.  
Frought women, livid, made into peonies by Aphrodites that caught their men flirting and blamed the women, flushed red.

Frought women, livid, chrysanthemums, dimmed until the end of the season, exchanged and retained like property.  
Blue women enter along the sides of her red Torii gates, belayed, branded and belled, a plangent sound.  
By candles, colored lights and dried flowers she’s sitting inside on a concrete floor, punctures and ruin burnished with paper, making burnt lime from lime mortar.  
Glass ***** on the ceiling, she moves the beads of a Palestinian glass bead bracelet she holds in her hands.  
She bends light to make shadows against  thin wooden slats curbed along the wall, and straight across the ceiling.
A metier, she makes tinctures, juniper berries and cotton *****.
Loamy soil in the center of the room,
A hawthorn tree stands alone,
A gateway for fairies.
large stones at the base protecting,
It’s branches a barrier.  
It’s leaves and shoots make bread and cheese.
It’s berries, red skin and yellow flesh, make jam.
Green bamboo stakes for the peonies when they whither from the weight of their petals.
And lime in the soil.  
She adds wood chips to the burnt lime in the kiln,
Unrolled paper, spools, and wire hanging.
Wood prayer beads connect her to the earth,
The tassels on the end of the beads connect her to spirit, to higher truth.
Minerals, marine mud and warm basins of seawater on a flower covered desk.  
She adds slaked lime to the burnt lime and wood chips.  
The lime converts to paper,
Trauma victims speak,
Light through butterfly wings.  
She’s plumeria with curved petals, thick, holding water
This is what I have written of my book.  I’ll be changing where the poems with the historical research go.  There are four more of those and nine of the other poems.

From fairytale princess gowns to feathery mini-dresses, bold skinny trouser looks and showgirl sequins, Bridal Fashion Week had something for brides of every size, shape and style inclination.

White reigned, as did classic silhouettes to please the most traditional bride. For everybody else, there were splashes of color, plenty of fluttery floral applique and sparkle, sparkle, sparkle.

Highlights from the Spring 2017 collections:

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO FOR KLEINFELD

After a smaller, capsule collection for the famed bridal shop, Siriano teamed with Kleinfeld again on a broader range.

His show stopper was a pricey pink ombre ball gown with a sweetheart neckline and skinny straps. As an evening wear designer, Siriano said bridal was a natural fit. He created in a range of sizes up to 24 or 26 — and a range of price points from about $3,500 to about $19,000.

Noting most dresses can be modified, he showed a lot of sleeves. There were long lacy ones on a column gown and a structured, off-the-shoulder pair in satin, embellished with tulle and strings of pearl.

One of his mermaid gowns included cascading ruffles. He used four tiers of ruffle at the bottom of a white, tailored suit jacket with matching boot-cut trousers.

Siriano also offered a range of hem lengths, from well above the knee in an appliqued mini to a fitted tea length with an ornate high neck and dramatic train.

In a backstage interview, Siriano said he's enjoying his first full push into bridal with the 27 pieces for Kleinfeld after focusing most of the time on evening.

"But the customer is so different," he said. "There's not as many rules. You can get away with trying new things, doing new things. It's a little fantasy dream world."

And what will Siriano wear when he weds his longtime boyfriend, Brad Walsh, at their Connecticut house this summer?

"I don't know. Literally we've got nothing," Siriano laughed.

INES DI SANTO

This was a **** runway dominated by sheers holding lots of floral creations in place. Romance meets sensuality is how the Toronto-based designer likes it.

While many of her looks were fit for royalty, complete with extra-long trains, she also ventured into over-the-top. An ultra-short hem with just one long lace sleeve had tulle skirting that skimmed the floor in back and leggings mismatched with floral embellishment, offering the appearance of one bare and one covered.

Spring itself was her inspiration this time around.

"The flowers, the garden, the beautiful trees, the sky, the sun," Di Santo said in an interview.

There were other vibes, in a sleeveless illusion Palazzo romper, for instance, with an encrusted bodice and dramatic detachable bell sleeves.

"I went very soft, romantic. You can see through the layers of the lace, the legs, the tulle," she said.

Like other designers, Di Santo included fit-and-flare looks along with sheaths, A-line silhouettes, halter necks and princess ball gowns.

Her backs and necklines were often illusion style, offering a barely there appearance. She included open bolero jackets for brides looking for a little cover, along with detachable skirt options for those who want to change up the outfit for the reception.

At the core of any bridal collection, Di Santo said, is how the dress speaks to budding love in marriage.

"It's so important," she said. "You can live without many things but you cannot live without love."



OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Designer Peter Copping is making his mark gradually at the storied Oscar de la Renta label, with a mind toward both preserving his predecessor's legacy and modernizing the label in his own way. In his bridal collection, Copping included some looser shapes — not everything was cinched tightly at the waist, princess-style — and even some short bridal gowns.

"I was thinking of the different women who are brides and the different ways women can get married," Copping said in a post-show interview, "because it's not always the same rules or traditions that people are looking for. So I think it's important within the collection to have a good cross-section of dresses, some short, some big columns, a real mix of fabrics."

Indeed, some of the gowns featured the sumptuous, extravagant embroidery for which the house is justly famous, and others featured much subtler embroidery for a more modern look.

"I think it was really just having a complete range of dresses," Copping said. The most striking were two short numbers, a nod to the popularity (and danceability) of shorter lengths, even if you can afford the big princess gown. "Yes I think it's popular," Copping said of the shorter length, "and I also think it's very relevant for rehearsal dinners, where a woman can still feel bridal the night before."

A highlight of the de la Renta bridal show is always the impeccably attired little children modeling flower-girl designs. "Having children here reflects what a real wedding is," said Copping.

And then there was Barbie.

Guests were sent home with the de la Renta Barbie doll, wearing a strapless white lacy column gown with a light blue tulle overskirt — something blue, of course. And in case you were wondering, under the skirt were some teetering white heels. No flats for this miniature bride.



REEM ACRA

For a bride looking to be just a bit daring, visible boning in corseting lent a uniqueness to some of Acra's fitted bodices.

There was an abundance of drama in ultra-long trains and encrusted sheer overlays. And Acra, too, offered a variety of sleeve options, including a web design on a snug pair that ended just above the elbow. The design, almost twig-like, was carried through to the rest of the full-skirted look.

Many of her dress tops were molded at the chest, bustier style, while she played with the lower halves. And some of her silhouettes fit tightly across the rear, sprouting trains where some brides may not feel entirely comfortable sporting one.

Acra put a twist on other trains, creating them to detach and also be used as veils. And she went for laced-up backs, both high and plunging, on some dresses.

In an interview, she called the collection "very airy, very light." Indeed, the stage lights during her show shone right through some of her dresses.

For the edgier bride, one who might appreciate the James Bond music Acra used for her show, she offered an unusual embroidered illusion gown adorned with pearls, white jewel stones and metal grommets.

Today's brides, she said, "have to have fun," adding: "She can't stress out about her wedding. Enjoy the ride and be the bride!"



MONIQUE LHUILLIER

There were lingerie-inspired elements here, too, with a touch of color in rose, pistachio, antique ivory and caramel. There were pops of fuchsia in bloom applique fitting for the outdoor garden where she staged her show.

Lhuillier decorated some organza gowns with hand-painted floral designs in asymmetrical layered tulle and silk organza. Deep necklines were prominent, with simple slip dresses offered along with bohemian gowns of lace and sheer skirts. Lhuillier also used corset bodices paired with cascading tulle skirts.

The collection felt like a chic romp, complete with high slits for a run through nature.

"My woman this season is in love and care free," Lhuillier said in an interview. "A little bohemian but just carefree."

The only clear trend in bridal these days, she said, is the need for designers to present more options.

"My core bride is somebody who loves femininity, she loves tradition but with a modern twist. And she wants something interesting with a lot of details," Lhuillier said.

There's definitely more fashion involved than when she began in bridal 20 years ago.

"One of the main reasons I got into the bridal business was when I was a bride in 1994, looking for a gown, I thought the options were so limited, and there was not a lot of fashion ideas," Lhuillier said.

Her bride doesn't want to be weighed down, however.

"She wants to look effortless," Lhuillier said. "But she wants to feel **** on her wedding day."

Are we all romantics on our wedding day?

"For me it's a really happy business," Lhuillier said. "We all are romantics deep down inside."

Pagmulat pa lang ng aking mga mata
sa aking unang hinga,
sa pagbuka ng aking mga bibig,
ngalan Niya na ang unang lumalabas,
ngalan Niya na ang aking binibigkas.
Sa bawat umagang gumising ako
na wala ka sa'king tabi,
mas lumalakas ang aking mga dasal.
Umaalingawngaw sa apat na sulok
ng aking silid ang iyong mga alaala.
Yung tipong aabutin ng ilang
dekada bago aking
malimutan ang tinig ng iyong
mahihinhing mga salita.
Ako'y madasaling tao.
Sa ilang beses ko ng
Isinigaw sa langit ang iyong mga
ginawa para mapamahal ka sakin
bakit tila aking pakiramdam
hindi Niya ako naririnig?
Sa ilang beses kong hiniling
na makasama ka,
sa bawat araw na nasa isipan kita,
kulang pa ang mga senyales
na ibinibigay Niya.
Nakakatawa nga lang dahil
hindi ko naman tinanong kung

alam kong hindi lang ako
ang Kanyang anak

sa milyong daan kong pagsabi
ng pangalan mo sa Kanya,
kahit isa lamang sa
kung sino man ang nasa itaas;
nagbabakasakali lang akong umabot
sa langit ang aking mga dalangin.
Hanggang sa mahalin mo ako
magiging madasalin akong tao.
El varón que tiene corazón de lis,
alma de querube, lengua celestial,
el mínimo y dulce Francisco de Asís,
está con un rudo y torvo animal,
bestia temerosa, de sangre y de robo,
las fauces de furia, los ojos de mal:
el lobo de Gubbia, el terrible lobo,
rabioso, ha asolado los alrededores;
cruel ha deshecho todos los rebaños;
devoró corderos, devoró pastores,
y son incontables sus muertes y daños.

Fuertes cazadores armados de hierros
fueron destrozados. Los duros colmillos
dieron cuenta de los más bravos perros,
como de cabritos y de corderillos.

Francisco salió:
al lobo buscó
en su madriguera.
Cerca de la cueva encontró a la fiera
enorme, que al verle se lanzó feroz
contra él. Francisco, con su dulce voz,
alzando la mano,
al lobo furioso dijo: -¡Paz, hermano
lobo! El animal
contempló al varón de tosco sayal;
dejó su aire arisco,
cerró las abiertas fauces agresivas,
y dijo: -¡Está bien, hermano Francisco!
¡Cómo! -exclamó el santo-. ¿Es ley que tú vivas
de horror y de muerte?
¿La sangre que vierte
tu hocico diabólico, el duelo y espanto
que esparces, el llanto
de los campesinos, el grito, el dolor
de tanta criatura de Nuestro Señor,
no han de contener tu encono infernal?
¿Vienes del infierno?
¿Te ha infundido acaso su rencor eterno
Luzbel o Belial?
Y el gran lobo, humilde: -¡Es duro el invierno,
y es horrible el hambre! En el bosque helado
no hallé qué comer; y busqué el ganado,
y en veces comí ganado y pastor.
¿La sangre? Yo vi más de un cazador
sobre su caballo, llevando el azor
al puño; o correr tras el jabalí,
el oso o el ciervo; y a más de uno vi
mancharse de sangre, herir, torturar,
de las roncas trompas al sordo clamor,
a los animales de Nuestro Señor.
Y no era por hambre, que iban a cazar.
Francisco responde: -En el hombre existe
mala levadura.
Cuando nace viene con pecado. Es triste.
Mas el alma simple de la bestia es pura.
Tú vas a tener
desde hoy qué comer.
Dejarás en paz
rebaños y gente en este país.
¡Que Dios melifique tu ser montaraz!
-Está bien, hermano Francisco de Asís.
-Ante el Señor, que todo ata y desata,
en fe de promesa tiéndeme la pata.
El lobo tendió la pata al hermano
de Asís, que a su vez le alargó la mano.
Fueron a la aldea. La gente veía
y lo que miraba casi no creía.
Tras el religioso iba el lobo fiero,
y, baja la testa, quieto le seguía
como un can de casa, o como un cordero.

Francisco llamó la gente a la plaza
y allí predicó.
Y dijo: -He aquí una amable caza.
El hermano lobo se viene conmigo;
me juró no ser ya vuestro enemigo,
y no repetir su ataque sangriento.
Vosotros, en cambio, daréis su alimento
a la pobre bestia de Dios. -¡Así sea!,
contestó la gente toda de la aldea.
Y luego, en señal
de contentamiento,
movió testa y cola el buen animal,
y entró con Francisco de Asís al convento.

Algún tiempo estuvo el lobo tranquilo
en el santo asilo.
Sus bastas orejas los salmos oían
y los claros ojos se le humedecían.
Aprendió mil gracias y hacía mil juegos
cuando a la cocina iba con los legos.
Y cuando Francisco su oración hacía,
el lobo las pobres sandalias lamía.
Salía a la calle,
iba por el monte, descendía al valle,
entraba en las casas y le daban algo
de comer. Mirábanle como a un manso galgo.
Un día, Francisco se ausentó. Y el lobo
dulce, el lobo manso y bueno, el lobo probo,
desapareció, tornó a la montaña,
y recomenzaron su aullido y su saña.
Otra vez sintióse el temor, la alarma,
entre los vecinos y entre los pastores;
colmaba el espanto los alrededores,
de nada servían el valor y el arma,
pues la bestia fiera
no dio treguas a su furor jamás,
como si tuviera
fuegos de Moloch y de Satanás.

Cuando volvió al pueblo el divino santo,
todos lo buscaron con quejas y llanto,
y con mil querellas dieron testimonio
de lo que sufrían y perdían tanto
por aquel infame lobo del demonio.

Francisco de Asís se puso severo.
Se fue a la montaña
a buscar al falso lobo carnicero.
Y junto a su cueva halló a la alimaña.
-En nombre del Padre del sacro universo,
conjúrote -dijo-, ¡oh lobo perverso!,
a que me respondas: ¿Por qué has vuelto al mal?
Contesta. Te escucho.
Como en sorda lucha, habló el animal,
la boca espumosa y el ojo fatal:
-Hermano Francisco, no te acerques mucho...
Yo estaba tranquilo allá en el convento;
al pueblo salía,
y si algo me daban estaba contento
y manso comía.
Mas empecé a ver que en todas las casas
estaban la Envidia, la Saña, la Ira,
y en todos los rostros ardían las brasas
de odio, de lujuria, de infamia y mentira.
Hermanos a hermanos hacían la guerra,
perdían los débiles, ganaban los malos,
hembra y macho eran como perro y perra,
y un buen día todos me dieron de palos.
Me vieron humilde, lamía las manos
y los pies. Seguía tus sagradas leyes,
todas las criaturas eran mis hermanos:
los hermanos hombres, los hermanos bueyes,
hermanas estrellas y hermanos gusanos.
Y así, me apalearon y me echaron fuera.
Y su risa fue como un agua hirviente,
y entre mis entrañas revivió la fiera,
y me sentí lobo malo de repente;
mas siempre mejor que esa mala gente.
y recomencé a luchar aquí,
a me defender y a me alimentar.
Como el oso hace, como el jabalí,
que para vivir tienen que matar.
Déjame en el monte, déjame en el risco,
déjame existir en mi libertad,
vete a tu convento, hermano Francisco,
sigue tu camino y tu santidad.

El santo de Asís no le dijo nada.
Le miró con una profunda mirada,
y partió con lágrimas y con desconsuelos,
y habló al Dios eterno con su corazón.
El viento del bosque llevó su oración,
que era: Padre nuestro, que estás en los cielos...
Casi mediando por filo
El siglo decimosexto,
Pues sólo faltaba un año
Para diez lustros completos,
Un pregón del Santo Oficio
Puso en gran alarma a México
Asombrando a la nobleza
Y a la plebe dando miedo.
Iban a ser conducidos
Con gran pompa al Quemadero
Más de cien penitenciados,
De grandes crímenes reos.

Herejes y judaizantes,
Desde largo tiempo presos,
Y firmes en las doctrinas
De Moisés y de Lutero,
De sus terribles sentencias
Fijado el lúgubre término
Pronto como relajados
Iban a ser un ejemplo,
Una sagrada enseñanza,
Prueba, verdad y escarmiento
De que los hijos del diablo
Deben morir en el fuego.

Alzáronse inmensas piras
Sobre aquel lugar siniestro,
Donde hallamos una plaza
de mercado en nuestros tiempos,
Al lado sur del Palacio
Donde reside el Gobierno.
Cansáronse muchos hombres,
Gastóse mucho dinero
En los mil preparativos
Del auto de fe más *****
Que la Inquisición registra
En su historia en nuestro suelo.

Y corrió de boca en boca,
Jurando todos ser cierto,
Que ordenaba el Santo Oficio
Que desde el conde al pechero
Revistieran las fachadas
De sus propios aposentos
Con todo lo que mostrase
Aflicción, terror y duelo.

Que en balcones y ventanas
De las casas del trayecto,
Que recorrer deberían
Hasta el suplicio los reos,
Se pusieran crucifijos
Con verdes ceras ardiendo;
Lazos y cortinas negras,
Ramas de ciprés con heno
Y por únicos adornos
Los atributos más tétricos
De estatuas y de retablos
En tumbas y cementerios.

Que al pasar la comitiva,
Con numeroso cortejo
De inquisidores y jueces
Y de verdugos y pueblo,
Ninguno hablara en voz alta
Para no ofender al cielo,
Y que de todas las bocas
Salieran fervientes rezos,
Para así atenuar un tanto
La suerte de los confesos.
Que era obligación de todos
Rezar contritos el Credo
Y repetirlo las veces
Que les permitiera el tiempo
Que tardaran en cambiarse
En cenizas los incrédulos.

Por último el Santo Oficio,
A nobles como a plebeyos,
Ordenaba que llevasen
En torno del Quemadero
A sus esposas e hijos
Para tomar escarmiento
De cómo padece y muere
Y causa terror un réprobo.

Y les previno asimismo
Que aquel que por sentimiento,
Por compasión o ternura
En instantes tan supremos
Solicitara clemencia
O indulto para los reos,
A las terribles hogueras
Fuera arrojado con éstos.

Y se mandó que ninguna
De las gentes de este Reino
Pudiera asistir al auto
Ni conocer a los reos
Sin haber en su parroquia
Cumplidos los sacramentos
Que lavan de toda culpa
Y curan de todo yerro.

Con tan graves prescripciones
Los habitantes de México
Esperaban el instante
En que un castigo tremendo
Iba a cumplirse, llevando
Cien hombres al Quemadero.
No hay plazo que no se cumpla,
Dice un sabido proverbio,
Y al fin llegó la alborada
Que ansioso esperaba el pueblo.
Dentro de las tristes celdas
A los infelices reos
Sus verdugos de rodillas
Estas cosas les dijeron:

«Nosotros, que vuestras vidas
Por mandato cortaremos,
Vuestro perdón demandamos
En nombre del Juez Supremo
A quien también le pedimos
Que os liberte del infierno».

Y esta fórmula cumplida
Visten con hopa a los presos,
Y los disponen y alistan
para caminar al fuego.

Entre todos, allí estaba
Ocupando el primer puesto
Un judaizante muy rico
y de carácter de hierro.

Contaban propios y extraños,
En público y en secreto
Que vino a la Nueva España
A dedicarse al comercio.

Construyó un amplio palacio
Un tanto churrigueresco,
En el barrio más distante
De la capital del reino.

Y arregló en el piso bajo
Una casa de comercio
Con dos puertas, de las cuales
Una tuvo el privilegio

De que si entraba por ella
Un comprador forastero,
Sacaba, sin explicárselo,
Más baratos los efectos.

Así vivió sin zozobras
El mercader mucho tiempo,
Y le debió a una desgracia
Turbar tan dulce sosiego.

Tuvo entre su muchedumbre
A una mujer a quien dieron
Orden de que investigase
De aquel hombre los secretos;
Y ella, astuta y maliciosa,
Y fanática en extremo
Llegaba noche por noche
Junto a la alcoba del dueño,
Y no le vio santiguarse
Ni le escuchó ningún rezo.

Pero sí notó que siempre
Se escucharan raros ecos
De golpes, como si diera
Azotes en algún cuerpo;
Miró por la cerradura
Y vio con asombre inmenso
Que aquel hombre fustigaba
Con un rebenque de cuero
A un Niño Jesús, desnudo
Y tendido sobre el suelo.

Le dio parte a la justicia
Y no pasó mucho tiempo
Sin que al hereje encontrara
El inquisidor Aldeño,
Dando golpes a la imagen
Del Príncipe de los Cielos.

Registrada aquella casa,
Encontraron que el hebreo
En una de las dos puertas
De su casa de comercio
Enterró dos crucifijos
Y formaba su contento
Vender al que los pisaba
Más baratos los efectos.

Por crímenes tan terribles,
Por tan grandes sacrilegios,
Sentenciólo el Santo Oficio
A ser arrojado al fuego,
Con coraza en la cabeza
Y sambenito en el cuerpo,
Conducido con una mula,
Montado en sentido inverso,
Con el rostro hacia la cola,
Custodiado por dos negros.

Y que después de quemado,
Para enseñanza del pueblo,
Se esparcieran las cenizas
En alto a los cuatro vientos,
Confiscándose sus bienes,
Su habitación maldiciendo,
Regando con sal y lumbre
Los muros y los cimientos
Y condenando a sus hijos
A calabozo perpetuo.
Cuentan viejos pergaminos
Que el excomulgado reo,
Cuando al suplicio marchaba
Daba pavor por blasfemo.

Y que la mula elegida
Para conducir su cuerpo
Se encabritó tantas veces
Que dio con él en el suelo;
Y temiéndose que vivo
No llegara al Quemadero,
Ordenaron que subiera
Para sujetarlo un *****,
Que lo estrechó entre sus brazos
En gran parte del trayecto.

El pueblo que contemplaba
Tan espantosos sucesos,
Sin explicarse el motivo,
Dijo para sus adentros:
«Este hereje lleva el diablo
Tan bien metido en el cuerpo,
Que ni la mula aguanta
Para no ofender al cielo».

Por ventanas y balcones,
En vez de salmos y rezos,
Le arrojaban anatemas,
Maldiciones y denuestos;
Y como era mes de julio
En que siempre llueve en México,
Y estaba el cielo nublado
Y nada agradable el cierzo,
Las gentes se sospechaban
Que por no ver al blasfemo,
Entre cenicientas nubes
Permaneció el sol envuelto.

Así al horrible suplicio
Llegaron a pasos lentos
Más de cien excomulgados,
Todos firmes y confesos.

Tocó el turno al israelita
Que fue entre todos aquellos
El primer quemado vivo
Por sus grandes sacrilegios.

Y dicen que al verse atado
Al tosco mástil de hierro
Y cuando ya lo envolvían
Las rojas lenguas del fuego,
Les gritaba a los verdugos
Con tosco y rabioso acento
«Echen más leña, infelices,
Que me cuesta mi dinero».
Han transcurrido dos siglos
Y aún está de pie y entero
El palacio en que habitara
El infortunado reo.

Llamóse Tomás Tremiño;
No murió joven ni viejo
Y fue de carácter firme
Y de condición discreto.

No se ha borrado su nombre
De la memoria del pueblo,
Porque siempre el infortunio
Del cristiano y del hebreo
Hace palpitar llorando
A los corazones buenos.

Y se encomia y se bendice
Y se aplaude con anhelo
La dicha de haber nacido
Con la razón y el derecho
Y sin hogueras que forjen

Graduated with flying colors and an A+
I knew that she will, I knew that she could
That in being a disc jockey, she would be good

Another guy, I know so well
In the field of medicine, he didn’t dwell
Instead, Henry became a computer engineer
His accolades gave him praises and cheer

He is now famous for his work
His love for computers does have a great perk
University of the Philippines helped him to achieve
He could be even greater, I believe

The best entrepreneur in town is Lance!
From University of Santo Tomas he received his diploma
He could market anything and everything
He is resilient from whatever the world can bring

Day-to-day ecstatic twirls
Twists and twirls,
a steep staircase to
the waterfall's epicenter.
The soul of the falls tumbling
across the sealed creek,
oiled with the feathers of soils.
The queen of frozen loganberries
gazes with approval,
watching seperate streams congeal, spiral,
and form starry nights

La historia de sus desgracias,
Era su ilusión la muerte
Y el martirio su enseñanza.

Tarde por tarde, iban muchos
A ver en desierta plaza,
Frente a la modesta ermita
Que a nuestros tiempos alcanza

Los comenzados cimientos
De la nueva mansión sacra
Que iba a honrar la siempre
Limpia Concepción Inmaculada;

Y para excitar el celo
De gentes ricas y santas
Que con su cuantiosa hacienda
El monasterio acabaran,

Una fiesta organizóse
Invitando a la más alta
Sociedad de la opulenta
Capital de Nueva España.
En medio de gran gentío
Un viejo orador sagrado
Dice así con voz sonora
Y con inmenso entusiasmo:

-«No es cierto que nadie quiera
Esta obra llevar a cabo,
Que hay alguien a quien le sobran
Elementos para el caso.

»Allí escondido entre muchos
Acierto a ver a mi hermano;
Lo conocéis casi todos,
Le llaman Simón de Haro;

»Es un minero muy rico,
Y es además buen cristiano,
Y va a encargarse de todo
Lo que otros abandonaron.

»¿Que habrá que gastar dinero?
¡Nada importa! ¡Tiene tanto!
Y además pueden sus minas
Darle cuanto es necesario.

»Él terminará el convento,
Él lo hará, puedo jurarlo,
Y tal vez desde mañana
Ocupe aquí muchos brazos».

Volvieron todos el rostro
A don Simón, contemplando
Que estaba absorto y confuso
Con un sermón tan extraño.

Y prodigándole encomios,
Y apretándole la mano,
Por su decisión tan noble
Todos le felicitaron.

Sin dar a nadie respuesta,
Confuso, atónito, pálido,
Al ver ya fuera del púlpito
A quien movió tal escándalo,

Fuése saliendo a su encuentro
De esta guisa a interpelarlo.
-Si sabes que soy muy pobre,
Pues muy exiguo es mi erario,

¿Por qué de erigir conventos
Me impones el duro encargo
Cuando en mi caja no quedan
Más que muy pocos ducados?

-Yo no he dicho una palabra.
-¡Estás loco! Te escucharon
Todos los que aquí han venido
Y que no son muy escasos.

-Pues te juro que no dije
Ni una frase... -Has dicho tanto
Que todos me reconocen
Como un rico nada avaro,
Que va a construir el convento.

En esto pienso que hay algo
Misterioso, incomprensible.
-Lo que dijeron tus labios
Todo el mundo lo comprende.
-Yo no lo he dicho. -Habla claro.

-Sospecho que las palabras
Que oyeron todos, hermano,
Las ha dicho por mi boca
El mismo Espíritu Santo.

-¿Será posible? -No dudes,
Porque yo ni lo he pensado,
Y al decir que nada dije
Con esta verdad me salvo.

-Dios será quien te proteja.
-Yo estoy muy pobre y no guardo
En caja sino muy poco,
Ven a ver mi caja. -Vamos.

De don Simón a la casa
Bien pronto se encaminaron,
Y abriendo una tosca puerta
Entraron a húmedo cuarto.

Vieron los dos una caja
Abandonada en un ángulo,
Forrada en vetusto cuero
Y llena de toscos clavos.

La abrió don Simón, y al punto
Saca con su propia mano
Cerca de catorce duros
Que allí estaban encerrados.

-¿Basta para un monasterio
Este pequeño puñado?
Y antes de que a tal pregunta diera
Respuesta su hermano,

Dentro de la antigua caja
Oyeron un ruido extraño
Y los espantados ojos
A un tiempo volvieron ambos.

De escudos limpios y hermosos
Halláronla rebosando,
Y postráronse de hinojos
Absortos de aquel milagro.

Vaciáronla varias veces,
Y en cada vez la encontraron
Llena de nuevas monedas
Que arrojaba ignota mano.

-Con esto se hará el convento.
-Y la obra llevaré a cabo.
-Alabemos a la Virgen,
-Y al Señor tres veces santo.

Con lágrimas en los ojos
Y trémulos y rezando,
El clérigo y el minero
Salieron al fin del cuarto.

Se dio principio a las obras,
Y en menos de quince años
Se alzó el templo y el convento
De la Concepción llamado.

Y en el espléndido coro,
Las monjas siempre guardaron,
Como caja milagrosa,
Portento admirable y raro,

La que durante las obras
Sola se estuvo llenando
Hasta que la ultima piedra
Se puso en el templo santo.

Y esta conseja la citan
Haciendo mención del caso
Autores que en nuestros tiempos
Pasan por doctos y sabios.
¿Por qué volvéis a la memoria mía,
Tristes recuerdos del placer perdido,
A aumentar la ansiedad y la agonía
De este desierto corazón herido?
¡Ay! que de aquellas horas de alegría
Le quedó al corazón sólo un gemido,
Y el llanto que al dolor los ojos niegan
Lágrimas son de hiel que el alma anegan.

¿Dónde volaron ¡ay! aquellas horas
De juventud, de amor y de ventura,
Regaladas de músicas sonoras,
Adornadas de luz y de hermosura?
Imágenes de oro bullidoras.
Sus alas de carmín y nieve pura,
Al sol de mi esperanza desplegando,
Pasaban ¡ay! a mi alredor cantando.

Gorjeaban los dulces ruiseñores,
El sol iluminaba mi alegría,
El aura susurraba entre las flores,
El bosque mansamente respondía,
Las fuentes murmuraban sus amores...
ilusiones que llora el alma mía!
¡Oh, cuán suave resonó en mi oído
El bullicio del mundo y su ruido!

Mi vida entonces, cual guerrera nave
Que el puerto deja por la vez primera,
Y al soplo de los céfiros suave
Orgullosa desplega su bandera,
Y al mar dejando que sus pies alabe
Su triunfo en roncos cantos, va velera,
Una ola tras otra bramadora
Hollando y dividiendo vencedora.

¡Ay! en el mar del mundo, en ansia ardiente
De amor velaba; el sol de la mañana
Llevaba yo sobre mi tersa frente,
Y el alma pura de su dicha ufana:
Dentro de ella el amor, cual rica fuente
Que entre frescuras y arboledas mana,
Brotaba entonces abundante río
De ilusiones y dulce desvarío.

Yo amaba todo: un noble sentimiento
Exaltaba mi ánimo, Y sentía
En mi pecho un secreto movimiento,
De grandes hechos generoso guía:
La libertad, con su inmortal aliento,
Santa diosa, mi espíritu encendía,
Contino imaginando en mi fe pura
Sueños de gloria al mundo y de ventura.

El puñal de Catón, la adusta frente
Del noble Bruto, la constancia fiera
Y el arrojo de Scévola valiente,
La doctrina de Sócrates severa,
La voz atronadora y elocuente
Del orador de Atenas, la bandera
Contra el tirano Macedonio alzando,
Y al espantado pueblo arrebatando:

El valor y la fe del caballero,
Del trovador el arpa y los cantares,
Del gótico castillo el altanero
Antiguo torreón, do sus pesares
Cantó tal vez con eco lastimero,
¡Ay!, arrancada de sus patrios lares,
Joven cautiva, al rayo de la luna,
Lamentando su ausencia y su fortuna:

El dulce anhelo del amor que guarda,
Tal vez inquieto y con mortal recelo;
La forma bella que cruzó gallarda,
Allá en la noche, entre medroso velo;
La ansiada cita que en llegar se tarda
Al impaciente y amoroso anhelo,
La mujer y la voz de su dulzura,
Que inspira al alma celestial ternura:

A un tiempo mismo en rápida tormenta
Mi alma alborotaban de contino,
Cual las olas que azota con violenta
Cólera impetuoso torbellino:
Soñaba al héroe ya, la plebe atenta
En mi voz escuchaba su destino:
Ya al caballero, al trovador soñaba,
Y de gloria y de amores suspiraba.

Hay una voz secreta, un dulce canto,
Que el alma sólo recogida entiende,
Un sentimiento misterioso y santo,
Que del barro al espíritu desprende;
Agreste, vago y solitario encanto
Que en inefable amor el alma enciende,
Volando tras la imagen peregrina
El corazón de su ilusión divina.

Yo, desterrado en extranjera playa,
Con los ojos extático seguía
La nave audaz que en argentado raya
Volaba al puerto de la patria mía:
Yo, cuando en Occidente el sol desmaya,
Solo y perdido en la arboleda umbría,
Oír pensaba el armonioso acento
De una mujer, al suspirar del viento.

¡Una mujer!  En el templado rayo
De la mágica luna se colora,
Del sol poniente al lánguido desmayo
Lejos entre las nubes se evapora;
Sobre las cumbres que florece Mayo
Brilla fugaz al despuntar la aurora,
Cruza tal vez por entre el bosque umbrío,
Juega en las aguas del sereno río.

¡Una mujer!  Deslizase en el cielo
Allá en la noche desprendida estrella,
Si aroma el aire recogió en el suelo,
Es el aroma que le presta ella.
Blanca es la nube que en callado vuelo
Cruza la esfera, y que su planta huella,
Y en la tarde la mar olas le ofrece
De plata y de zafir, donde se mece.

Mujer que amor en su ilusión figura,
Mujer que nada dice a los sentidos,
Ensueño de suavísima ternura,
Eco que regaló nuestros oídos;
De amor la llama generosa y pura,
Los goces dulces del amor cumplidos,
Que engalana la rica fantasía,
Goces que avaro el corazón ansía:

¡Ay! aquella mujer, tan sólo aquélla,
Tanto delirio a realizar alcanza,
Y esa mujer tan cándida y tan bella
Es mentida ilusión de la esperanza:
Es el alma que vívida destella
Su luz al mundo cuando en él se lanza,
Y el mundo, con su magia y galanura
Es espejo no más de su hermosura:

Es el amor que al mismo amor adora,
El que creó las Sílfides y Ondinas,
La sacra ninfa que bordando mora
Debajo de las aguas cristalinas:
Es el amor que recordando llora
Las arboledas del Edén divinas:
Amor de allí arrancado, allí nacido,
Que busca en vano aquí su bien perdido.

¡Oh llama santa! ¡celestial anhelo!
¡Sentimiento purísimo! ¡memoria
Acaso triste de un perdido cielo,
Quizá esperanza de futura gloria!
¡Huyes y dejas llanto y desconsuelo!
¡Oh qué mujer! ¡qué imagen ilusoria
Tan pura, tan feliz, tan placentera,
Brindó el amor a mi ilusión primera!...

¡Oh Teresa! ¡Oh dolor! Lágrimas mías,
¡Ah! ¿dónde estáis que no corréis a mares?
¿Por qué, por qué como en mejores días,
No consoláis vosotras mis pesares?
¡Oh! los que no sabéis las agonías
De un corazón que penas a millares
¡Ay! desgarraron y que ya no llora,
¡Piedad tened de mi tormento ahora!

¡Oh dichosos mil veces, sí, dichosos
Los que podéis llorar! y ¡ay! sin ventura
De mí, que entre suspiros angustiosos
Ahogar me siento en infernal tortura.
¡Retuércese entre nudos dolorosos
Mi corazón, gimiendo de amargura!
También tu corazón, hecho pavesa,
¡Ay! llegó a no llorar, ¡pobre Teresa!

¿Quién pensara jamás, Teresa mía,
Que fuera eterno manantial de llanto,
Tanto inocente amor, tanta alegría,
Tantas delicias y delirio tanto?
¿Quién pensara jamás llegase un día
En que perdido el celestial encanto
Y caída la venda de los ojos,
Cuanto diera placer causara enojos?

Aun parece, Teresa, que te veo
Aérea como dorada mariposa,
Ensueño delicioso del deseo,
Sobre tallo gentil temprana rosa,
Del amor venturoso devaneo,
Angélica, purísima y dichosa,
Y oigo tu voz dulcísima y respiro
Tu aliento perfumado en tu suspiro.

Y aún miro aquellos ojos que robaron
A los cielos su azul, y las rosadas
Tintas sobre la nieve, que envidiaron
Las de Mayo serenas alboradas:
Y aquellas horas dulces que pasaron
Tan breves, ¡ay! como después lloradas,
Horas de confianza y de delicias,
De abandono y de amor y de caricias.

Que así las horas rápidas pasaban,
Y pasaba a la par nuestra ventura;
Y nunca nuestras ansias la contaban,
Tú embriagada en mi amor, yo en tu hermosura.
Las horas ¡ay! huyendo nos miraban
Llanto tal vez vertiendo de ternura;
Que nuestro amor y juventud veían,
Y temblaban las horas que vendrían.

Y llegaron en fin: ¡oh! ¿quién impío
¡Ay! agostó la flor de tu pureza?
Tú fuiste un tiempo cristalino río,
Manantial de purísima limpieza;
Después torrente de color sombrío
Rompiendo entre peñascos y maleza,
Y estanque, en fin, de aguas corrompidas,
Entre fétido fango detenidas.

¿Cómo caiste despeñado al suelo,
Astro de la mañana luminoso?
Ángel de luz, ¿quién te arrojó del cielo
A este valle de lágrimas odioso?
Aún cercaba tu frente el blanco velo
Del serafín, y en ondas fulguroso
Rayos al mando tu esplendor vertía,
Y otro cielo el amor te prometía.

Mas ¡ay! que es la mujer ángel caído,
O mujer nada más y lodo inmundo,
Hermoso ser para llorar nacido,
O vivir como autómata en el mundo.
Sí, que el demonio en el Edén perdido,
Abrasara con fuego del profundo
La primera mujer, y ¡ay! aquel fuego
La herencia ha sido de sus hijos luego.

Brota en el cielo del amor la fuente,
Que a fecundar el universo mana,
Y en la tierra su límpida corriente
Sus márgenes con flores engalana.
Mas ¡ay! huid: el corazón ardiente
Que el agua clara por beber se afana,
Lágrimas verterá de duelo eterno,
Que su raudal lo envenenó el infierno.

Huid, si no queréis que llegue un día
En que enredado en retorcidos lazos
El corazón con bárbara porfía
Luchéis por arrancároslo a pedazos:
En que al cielo en histérica agonía
Frenéticos alcéis entrambos brazos,
Para en vuestra impotencia maldecirle,
Y escupiros, tal vez, al escupirle.

Los años ¡ay! de la ilusión pasaron,
Las dulces esperanzas que trajeron
Con sus blancos ensueños se llevaron,
Y el porvenir de oscuridad vistieron:
Las rosas del amor se marchitaron,
Las flores en abrojos convirtieron,
Y de afán tanto y tan soñada gloria
Sólo quedó una tumba, una memoria.

¡Pobre Teresa! ¡Al recordarte siento
Un pesar tan intenso!  Embarga impío
Mi quebrantada voz mi sentimiento,
Y suspira tu nombre el labio mío.
Para allí su carrera el pensamiento,
Hiela mi corazón punzante frío,
Ante mis ojos la funesta losa,
Donde vil polvo tu bondad reposa.

Y tú, feliz, que hallastes en la muerte
Sombra a que descansar en tu camino,
Cuando llegabas, mísera, a perderte
Y era llorar tu único destino:
¡Cuando en tu frente la implacable suerte
Grababa de los réprobos el sino!
Feliz, la muerte te arrancó del suelo,
Y otra vez ángel, te volviste al cielo.

Roída de recuerdos de amargura,
Árido el corazón, sin ilusiones,
La delicada flor de tu hermosura
Ajaron del dolor los aquilones:
Sola, y envilecida, y sin ventura,
Tu corazón secaron las pasiones:
Tus hijos ¡ay! de ti se avergonzaran
Y hasta el nombre de madre te negaran.

Los ojos escaldados de tu llanto,
Tu rostro cadavérico y hundido;
único desahogo en tu quebranto,
El histérico ¡ay! de tu gemido:
¿Quién, quién pudiera en infortunio tanto
Envolver tu desdicha en el olvido,
Disipar tu dolor y recogerte
En su seno de paz? ¡Sólo la muerte!

¡Y tan joven, y ya tan desgraciada!
Espíritu indomable, alma violenta,
En ti, mezquina sociedad, lanzada
A romper tus barreras turbulenta.
Nave contra las rocas quebrantada,
Allá vaga, a merced de la tormenta,
En las olas tal vez náufraga tabla,
Que sólo ya de sus grandezas habla.

Un recuerdo de amor que nunca muere
Y está en mi corazón: un lastimero
Tierno quejido que en el alma hiere,
Eco suave de su amor primero:
¡Ay de tu luz, en tanto yo viviere,
Quedará un rayo en mí, blanco lucero,
Que iluminaste con tu luz querida
La dorada mañana de mi vida!

Que yo, como una flor que en la mañana
Abre su cáliz al naciente día,
¡Ay, al amor abrí tu alma temprana,
Y exalté tu inocente fantasía,

Y consumía lenta calentura,
Tu corazón al par de tu amargura;

Si en tu penosa y última agonía
Volviste a lo pasado el pensamiento;
Si comparaste a tu existencia un día
Tu triste soledad y tu aislamiento;
Si arrojó a tu dolor tu fantasía
Tus hijos ¡ay! en tu postrer momento
A otra mujer tal vez acariciando,
Madre tal vez a otra mujer llamando;

Si el cuadro de tus breves glorias viste
Pasar como fantástica quimera,
Y si la voz de tu conciencia oíste
Dentro de ti gritándole severa;
Si, en fin, entonces tú llorar quisiste
Y no brotó una lágrima siquiera
Tu seco corazón, y a Dios llamaste,
Y no te escuchó Dios, y blasfemaste;

¡Oh! ¡cruel! ¡muy cruel! ¡martirio horrendo!
¡Espantosa expiación de tu pecado,
Sobre un lecho de espinas, maldiciendo,
Morir, el corazón desesperado!
Tus mismas manos de dolor mordiendo,
Presente a tu conciencia lo pasado,
Buscando en vano, con los ojos fijos,
Y extendiendo tus brazos a tus hijos.

¡Oh! ¡cruel! ¡muy cruel!... ¡Ay! yo entretanto
Dentro del pecho mi dolor oculto,
Enjugo de mis párpados el llanto
Y doy al mundo el exigido culto;
Yo escondo con vergüenza mi quebranto,
Mi propia pena con mi risa insulto,
Y me divierto en arrancar del pecho
Mi mismo corazón pedazos hecho.

Gocemos, sí; la cristalina esfera
Gira bañada en luz: ¡bella es la vida!
¿Quién a parar alcanza la carrera
Del mundo hermoso que al placer convida?
Brilla radiante el sol, la primavera
Los campos pinta en la estación florida;
Truéquese en risa mi dolor profundo...
Que haya un cadáver más, ¿qué importa al mundo?

like a chain of
tibetan prayer-flags
waving to the Sun
immediately she begins 
to stage the play
that penetrates the heart 
with strong arms
and a silken mane 
the color of sea-spray 
her neck is the foam filled ocean

are coral reefs that protect
the polyps that cluster 
in her unfathomable depths 

modern day education
is beyond biased 
and most definitely broken
impermanent knots 
are haphazardly tied
to bind the minds
of dancing children
short-term memory
instigates a fleeting vision
some call it autism 
others prefer anarchy
a fear of growth 
or is it really indecision
that when you can no longer respond 
to life's most pertinent questions
with anything other 
than no thank you
eventually every syllable uttered 
becomes the stuttered sound 
of overly clichéd ambivalence
that frequently masks 
itself as wisdom


despite our higher self's 
best wishes
such limitless awareness
our very own bodhichitta
slowly becomes 
an interminable trickster
also known as Ego 
which incessantly repeats

phrases like 
i’ve earned these blessings
i've learned these lessons
aeons ago
therefore it is best to
meditate and inspect one's thoughts
on a daily basis
before all these shadows 
have a chance to grow and become
funeral wreaths
still the ego says
oh what fun it is to look at
the shimmering shawls strewn 
haphazardly like wedding veils
upon our watery souls
as if you and I were a couple of
Jackson ******* paintings


to heat the flame
inside the
limitless
space of your soul
you cannot
deny your heart
the swamps, vines, rocks and peaks
it seeks for eternity
the ancient trees drink light
and breathe out the heaviness
of splintered sight 
into the ephemeral night
divine breath
is calling you home
sounding trumpet flowers
daily...

gathering falling branches
and transforming sticks of palo santo
into star-studded candles
which permanently leave 
their ashen and iridescent marks 
like tattooed scars
upon the painted face of the sky

while angels fly
with flaming bundles of hair
weaving silent smoke signals
rising up from warm coals
the spiraling eyes of the spirits 
are alight with the embers of love
which impress their radiant etchings 
upon the daguerreotype of darkness' 
burning eyeballs


faceless in the heat
grief is asleep and dreaming
of justice
a curse on those 
who evade their emptiness
in culturally appropriated places
harboring...

regret like a fugitive 
such frustration that i wept
for the lack of fruitfulness 
******* the chords of love
slowly and gently she strums
her weeping guitar 
as if arrows and yarn
were woven into her arms
like baby blankets and bundles of cotton
naked and forlorn 
her hair worn short
still she swore that she could not rest
until all had sweat their prayers
through hollow caverns and windy staircases
her vision forever strengthened
by a ceaseless determination

balancing multiple lovers
is never an ideal situation
hearts broken and freedom falling
toppling down from heaven’s peak 
into these dusty old basements
just as we suspected
everything is resurrected
to time’s smiling amazement
both old ones and new ones
are reflections of truth
juniper sours
and blooming flowers 
of golden waterlilies 
poppies and sprigs of amaranth
jaundiced and porous
loquacious are the stages 
that we must pass through 
on our way to becoming 
dew drops and frozen apples


remediating all this concrete nonsense 
would be to our immediate economic advantage
these tragic promissory notes 
where landed lords of wealth 
have repeatedly replicated themselves 
upon trillions of meaningless pieces of paper
their stoically printed faces 
should not be readily trusted
nor traded or exchanged
for life's necessities
they are not only useless but truly 
dangerous
as they often claim
that they are only passing through
yet as each new day dawns
they are forever inclined 
to once again dine with you anew


bold in flesh and sinuous
only a moment before
the Sun shall bloom and whisper
with sleepy eyes
into yarrow flavored water
the secret of not knowing
the ancient face
of grandmother Moon speaks
through alabaster teeth
so intent on biting through sheets of
dawn’s iridescent sky
that the sounds of her words
are instantly drowned out 
by her tears
yet if you listen 
really closely like an owl
to the chorus of the night
you can clearly 
hear the forest echo

Sa paningin ko'y ika'y parang santo
At ako nama'y parang g*go
Na palaging hinahanap ang mga ngiti sa mukha mo
Masulyapan ka lamang
Masaya na ako
Ngunit pagkatapos ay babalik din
ang sakit sa aking puso
Wala akong magawa kundi masaktan at magtiis
Kaya ako ngayo'y puno na lamang ng hinagpis
Oo late na ako, nasa piling ka na ngayon
Ng isang taong mahalaga rin sa buhay ko
Kaya kahit anong pilit ko
Hindi magkakaroon ng "tayo"

Sa simula pa lang hindi ko naman ginusto
Na muling tumibok ang aking puso
Dahil takot akong maranasan mo
Ang mga pagkukulang at sakit
